I'll be watching the BAFTAs on the BBC here in England.
Just wanted to give you a heads-up: the BAFTAs have a bit of repuation for poking Hollywood in the eye. Poor British films often get the nod over superior efforts from across the pond.
Everything I can cross is crossed for Brokeback, but I think that The Constant Gardener (perceived as British) will be the big winner. >:(

I'll also be watching here on Sunday in Bonnie Scotland. I've already planned a big fight with my family on Sunday afternoon, where I can storm out in a huff. That way non of the buggers will be speaking to be for a day or so, that way the chatty cathy's that they usually are won't be able to call me and interupt my jubilation (hopefully not despair) when I see my baby romp home with all the awards.

I am both very nervous and excited about tonight-will be glued to tv come 9o'clock. Got my bottle of vodka at the ready either to toast our boys or drown sorrows in alcoholic stupor. Having seen The Constant Gardener, it's a decent, heartfelt film (unlike the overblown Crash >:(), but it's been done better before. It breaks no new ground... unlike another film we'll be cheering on.Yes i know, sometimes we're so tally-ho thats one in the eye for the yanks. I hope that this isn't one of those occasions. I have to say this is the only time i've genuinely cared about who wins what, and i think this time us brits should take a back seat and cheer on a film that deserves to win. GO BROKEBACK!!!!!!!

I recommend the movie. It's a few years old, but is very well done. Fry does a brilliant job as Oscar Wilde. In addition to Jude Law, there's also Michael Sheen and Ioan Gruffold in it.

Oscar balloting is still open and this could have a big impact. It might just walk away with Oscars in the same categories as the BAFTAs though I'm pulling for all 9 in which it was nominated.

As someone once commented, Britain has actors and America has movie stars. On this side of the Atlantic British actors are highly admired for their talent and abilities. I've always appreciated how versatile they are - able to give a tear-your-heart-out dramatic performance or a side-splitting comedy routine. True professionals! It is quite an honor to receive an award from the British Academy and Jake should feel very proud.

It's 1:58 GMT here in Bonnie Scotland....but that's still early for me, don't normally go to sleep till approx 4:00 most nights. Always been a night owl, always got by on 3 -4 hours sleep a night.
Mind you I catch up at the weekends except on the one Saturday a month I've contractually got to go into work and perform a few marriages or same sex civil partnerships. Thankfully it's not this Saturday.

I'm still dancing on the ceiling over the four BBM BAFTA wins, especially Jake's! :D I noticed that he left Anne Hathway's name out of his acceptance speech, after acknowledging everyone else. With the utter shock of the win affecting him the way it did, I'm sure it's just an oversight. :-[ I hope the "rags" don't start the negative stuff now about Jake "slighting" Anne... I got sick of Heath purportedly turning anti-Jake and vice versa >:(, especially when it's obvious those guys really like each other, just as the four main actors respect each other (as in the Oprah appearance).
I'm still hopeful there will be an upset at the Oscars and Heath will finally get the validation he deserves! When that happens you'll be sure to find me doing a tarantula on my roof top. ;D

I agree Esme, people are reading too much into his statement. Just like the BAFTA clip - Jake bent down to hear what Heath was saying as everyone was clapping in the background, the only way to hear Heath was to get closer. It wasn't by any stretch of the imagination a "kiss".
He appears to be "gay friendly", liberal, was raised around the Hollywood movie crowd and he's politically attune. Yes the film has some social themes or meanings but it also has great artistry.

You heard it here first. I have not seen Capote, but I think it's in the tea leaves that Mr. Hoffman will go four for four...Globes, SAGs, BAFTAs and Oscars. I hate the idea that Heath is playing second fiddle in this category, but awards are awards, politics are politics. Heath's performance was, is and will be the legendary remembrance it deserves.

Okay, so PSH gets to have the acting award again - I WISH oh I WISH that the award wasn't given for 'all the past times he deserved it' or for 'best imitation of another person with lots of characteristics we recognize (can you say "Ray"?) PSH and Jamie Foxx are great actors, but acting is more than impersonation, I thought. It's about creating a character, and getting deep inside that character's mind to make you forget, for an entire movie, that there's an actor you know up there. For that, I'd award the Oscar to Heath Ledger. Cripes, he made Annie Proulx freak out, about a character SHE created. What more proof do they need. And don't EVEN get me started on the 'but he mumbles' idiocy.

This is Jake just before he went on stage to present.Stepehn Fry,the Bafta's presenter said this.

He then went on to introduce him as the sensational Jake Gyllenhaal.Jake was shaking his head backstage and laughing.Heres a few piccies of it.

I think if i was to try and put that into perspective,then what Jake is trying to say is that the social awareness BBM has created probably makes him feel proud and honoured to of been involved in the making of this film.It's crazy in this day and age that it takes a movie to make people socially aware of prejudice.That's just my take on it.He might mean something totally different,but he comes across as a genuinely lovely person,and he has matured considerably since BBM.It's obviously had an impact on him too,and changed his views on how he sees things.

It is my feeling that Jake is gay but I also sense many here do not want to acknowledge this, IMO.

Well Jake himself has not acknowledged being gay--though there are some very specific rumours about that. I do get the impression that gays here and abroad are attempting to "honor" Jake's privacy--partially out of appreciation and respect for his wonderful performance. That's fair enough but if he does happen to be gay then I hope he doesn't let the success of Brokeback closet him even more than the normal pressure of being an emerging leading man in American Cinema---which is already pressure enough.
I agree with you Jennis about this. When I first heard Jake give his speech as live, I took his social over artistic comment to mean that due to the taboo subject of gay love being portrayed so beautifully in a mainstream hollywood film, and the reactions to it since it's release, he felt so proud to be part of it. If it has anything to do with his sexuality, then that's fine, but I personally don't think it does - I think getting the award gave him an excuse to acknowledge again how happy he was to be a part of such an important film.I agree with you as well
I heard a backstage interview he gave, and he talked more about the social/artistic comment - he said he had been overawed by people's positive reactions to the film, and in particular those in the gay community (even though we all acknowledge the story is universally a love story), which made him even more proud of being part of it.
Maybe it's also to do with his changing attitudes too - remember on Oprah he was asked about how doing the film had changed his views and perceptions of gay love (the question from Oprah and the answer from Jake were not particularly straightforward, and I think he probably felt a little uncomfortable talking about it, but I actually admired him for addressing it, as he's no doubt grown as a person as well as an actor due to this film).
I just think he comes across as a lovely person, with a fantastic sense of humour, but also very intelligent and articulate, and very unhollywood IMO.

In General Heath has been far more lauded for his portrayal of Ennis than has been Jake for Jack Twist. So much so that I found it necessarily to make several posts on various forums saying that I think Jake has been somewhat overlooked for a performance that is deeply textured even though it may appear to be all about Bambi eyes and pretty facial shots captured by Ang Lee.
The irony seems to be that with Philip Seymour Hoffman posting so many wins over Heath--it may be Heath who is under acknowledged in the final analysis....and actually we're really just coming down the the American Academy Awards where I'd say Hoffman is very strongly favored.
And I do think it's a pity that George Clooney came up against Brokeback Mountain this year in acting and directing and for best picture. Good Night and Good Luck is otherwise such a worthy choice for some of these awards--I can't help but want to see them go to Brokeback though.

I would probably agree that Health's is a more completely amazing role. I've only ever seen Gyllenhaal in Day After Tomorrow which I found totally forgettable.--Only seen Heath in Knight's Tale which was even more forgettable--imho.
I don't know what "motivation" a str8 actor would need to find his Ennis Del Mar--but speaking as a gay man--Jake's Jack Twist would be all the reason I'd need to get up in the morning and face another day! :-) Gyllenhaal's portrayal of Twist totally acts as the "muse" for the Ennis character--that's just the way I experience the movie
--and I find it even easier to impose Jake's Twist on the Ann Proulx Short Story. Just as Annie herself say's that Heath goes deeper into Ennis than she herself did writing the original text--I find Jake's twist somehow more real and convincing than the Jack Twist she originally conjured up.

My friend got a bottle of Laphroaig from his wife for christmas and asked me round for a wee dram. It was lovely lovely peaty aroma and warmed me 'fi the top o' ma heid tae the tips o' ma taes' It cost her about £58 ( you do the conversion). He wouldn't give me more than two glasses though ......tight Scottish Git (actually he is Welsh).
Still it was very very good.
[Ah yes, Laphroaig the peaty-est (sp?) of the single malts from Islay. I tried it once - a beautiful creature. Your "sin taxes" are very high. 58 pounds Sterling is roughly US $100.00. Ouch! A very nice Christmas gift. I also like Macallan Scotch with its hint of sherry sweetness.
