Title: *SPOILER* Your Thoughts after seeing the DVD
Post by: Rønnaug on Mar 24, 2006, 01:50 PM
Brokies, DVD release in the US is around the corner (sorry friends oversea).

Please post all your thoughts here after you watch the DVD.

The first person I am aware of in this forum - Esme has gotten her DVD. Lucky her.  :D

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok...this can be made into all sorts of new topics when more people get the dvd and we want to discuss all the little things we see or hear that missed us before.

If you have wandered in here by mistake and don't want to know STOP READING NOW :)

But I just have to say something and I will disguise it in here, no bold no italic and no enlarged.

The scene that has haunted me the most and where I have disagreed with people in here is the infamous second tent scene...sexy as it is, I haven't been hearing the I'm sorry and haven't seen Ennis mouth it either. Well. I just played the second tent scene with subs. First thing I did after tearing off theplastic. I just had to see if there was indeed an I'm sorry subbed there. And it is, but it isn't Ennis that says it. It is Jacke. I am sorry but that is my take on it. I have been paying so much attention to Ennis lips that I haven't even thought of Jacks. But when I saw the subbed I'm sorry I played it again ,watching Ennis lips and then again watching Jacks. This is my opinion. Jack says I'm sorry, two I'ts alrights and then says come here, lie back. Put a ton of ! behind that one.

Thanks but I will definitively wait for the DVD...  I don't want to ruin my own experience!

 ;) :D :'(

I agree with Esme. Ennis talking :o ;D No.
Jack says "Come (here)", "It's allright" (That's allright?) Ennis just concentrate on "being", make little resistance, it's his role. Jack having the allureing part (he's the gayish one).
(Have to make a confession: I have it on my PC.... so hang me :P .. living in "Lapland" you see ::), but I'm going to buy the DVD also.)

OH MY GAWD!!!  I saw the film 9 times in a theater, and I only heard "I'm sorry" once and "its alright" twice...but I NEVER heard "come here, lie back!  OH MY GAWD!!! Did Jack really say that? :o  WOW!!! How sexy is that!  Now I am waiting AND salivating ;D!   Donna

YEE HAW! My DVD just a arrived from Wolfe Video today, along with my BBM bandana. ;D :D ;D    Now that I have decent volume control & subtitles, I was finally able to catch some of the dialog from the tent scenes that I could never hear in my downloaded bit torrent version. Our boys really DO say "Sorry" and "It's all right" in the tent scene. It may not be big screen, but there are definitely advantages to having the DVD. You guys are gonna love it!   ;D

I've only played it once so far, so I haven't nailed down exactly who said what to whom, but what Esme said sounds about right. I had never heard that "Come here, lie back" before, but there it was! Now we can all finally know for certain.

I have watched clips of the 2nd tent scene before the DVD release; Jack says, very quietly :I'm sorry, I'm so sorry"; then he says: "Come here" as he pulls Ennis toward him and they both lie down;
THAT IS ALL HE SAYS; nothing else; you can watch it, without the music playing on YOU TUBE:  "4 Nights in 20 Years"

Just got my DVD in the mail this afternoon. I'm sitting here in my bandana waiting for the sun to go down teasing myself, but I want the room dark like a theater to watch it. I still don't trust the subtitles. I know what I heard and it was ennis saying he's sorry with Jack slmost over speaking him with, "It's alright."

You should never trust subtitles.  Sometimes the characters say a long sentence that would fill the screen or they all talk so fast the people that do the subtitles cut it down to fit, hopefully without losing any meaning.

The first television I bought with Closed Caption I couldn't believe how they change things.  But, they HAVE to. They don't have a choice many times.

Agreed. I wouldn't trust subtitles alone, but in combination with cranked up volume and lip-reading, they can be a useful tool. Besides, the way Ennis mumbles, you almost NEED subtitles to understand what he's saying, especially in the tent scenes.

I do agree.  Ennis often didn't speak clearly when he kept his mouth so tight.  But you know, I think it was also the sound person or the people that put the movie together or I am going deaf and just haven't realized it yet (no joking).  The reason I say that is because there were several places in the movie I had a difficult time hearing the other actors.  The bedroom scene with Alma and Ennis where Alma is behind Ennis hugging him.  I had a difficult time hearing her and him sometimes. I mean I did hear them but I really had to listen.  The motel scene was another, but then again it involved Ennis and his tight mouth.

As for the 2nd tent scene, many times I got the impression the words were added AFTER filming except for the "It's alright."  Those words you can see Jack saying as he nods.

But, like I said, I could be going deaf. But, when I made the audio track and cranked the volume full blast, I definitely heard, "I'm sorry...I'm so sorry.  That's (or it's) alright." and then something that sounded like, "Come here...."

People who have to do subtitles and captions do not receive the text of the dialog because often actors will ad lib. So if we have a difficult time hearing what is said I am sure they do also.

I had never noticed this before: Sitting in the bar at the begining, Jake asks: "Your folk run you off?" like he could have easilys said "too".

Has anyone noticed that??

I have to say that seeing it at home tonight didn't have the same impact as in the theater and not because of any distractions at home or because of the screen size. For me it was because I would turn the subtitles on an off and go back to check things I don't remember seeing before, so I lost the some of flow. I sure that won't happen in future viewings.

I noticed a couple of things that I hadn't really seen/heard/noticed when I saw it in the theater and I saw it 21 times!  :)

There was much more light in the tent scenes on my DVD that on the movie screen. The sound was better too. Now I could see Jack turn towards Ennis after their first coupling ended. Missed that before. Also, I never noticed the Jack's expression and the way he sort of turned his head downward in satisfaction after he took Ennis's hand and put it on his crotch.

After Ennis said he wasn't a sinner, on the DVD I heard/saw Jack say "Ummmmm", kinda nod and smile. Didn't see that before either. Which makes me think that Ennis statement was indeed flirting.

I ran a couple scenes with the subtitles to catch dialogue that I didn't quite get. For example, prior to the first tent scene, when Ennis is trying to get up to go to the sheep I was tyring to figure out what Ennis was saying. When he tells Jack that's where he is going, Jack says something and its "give'em hell" according to the subtitles, then Ennis says he can't stand up.

My take on the great "I'm sorry/Its all right" second tent scene controversy  :)  I still think that during the second tent scene Jack says "its all right" 3 times, the first one being very slurred and mumbled and sounding like "I'm sorry" even though the subtitles show it as one "I'm sorry" and 2 "its all right".

There is also an incomplete subtitle during the conversation when Ennis shows up late and says "Look what I brought". There's only 2 words of another sentence shown. According to the screenplay its about Ennis bringing beans.

I watched the second tent scene over and over, and clearly hear, "I'm sorry.  I'm sorry." twice.  As in the theater, I do not see Ennis's lips move.  This is what confused me, but throughout the movie Ennis talks through the side of his mouth so this comes as no surprise.  Jack is clearly responding back to something said not by himself, when he looks Ennis in the eyes, shakes his head and says, "It's all right."  This is how I see it.  The only other possible explanation is that they somehow dubbed Ennis's voice in after the scene.

Things I noticed:

1. It really touched me how Jack wants this second sexual scene (and first love scene in my opinion) to be Ennis's choice.  He invites him in:  tent opened, shirt off,  but he lets Ennis decide if he wants to come.  Absolutely beautiful!

2.  I got a free screenplay with my DVD, so I see there is no direction regarding Ennis's approach to Jack in the second tent scene.  I wonder, if the use of the hat was all Heath's idea.  It was brilliant!

3.  I don't know how I ever missed this one, but I never noticed the look on Jack's face when he says, "Pleases to meet you, Ennis del Mar."  It is just priceless!

Can anyone tell me where they hear,  "Come here.  Lie back," in the second tent scene.  I don't hear it.  THANKS!

I really miss the big screen.  Although it is great to be able to stop and play the movie as I like,  it looses some of its impact in my opinion on a small screen.

ok...I heard I'm sorry too, but who is supposed to be saying it?  If its Jack, why is he apologizing?  If its Ennis I guess he's apologizing for not speaking to Jack when he rode off the next morning.   :( ???

According to the subtitles, Ennis says I'm sorry. Just from listening, I can't figure it out. It sounds like the same voice saying all of it.

The way I see it it is more likly that it is Jack, he does not appologize but sees how apprahensive Ennis is and says he is sorry for speeding it, but it is alright, come here. Would Ennis EVER appologize??? for anything??? he might mean to but say it??? No...makes more sense for it to be Jack

i don't see Ennis's mouth move at all.
It might have been over dubbed after... anyways...all this just to confuse us and to argue, tee hee

A suggestion: use a pair of headphones during the 2nd tent scene.  You will hear that "come here. lie back" dialog that Jack so softly whispers  ;D

Ever since the first time I saw the film I have thought Jack was very much trying to be caring, sweet, and gentle...but when I heard that I just flipped... What it must have taken for him to say that... and it is like it is a treat to the ones of us liking it so much we see it agian and again, cause honestly, who heard it the first time??? It's like a reward, "thank you for loving us so much that you want to see us again and agian, here's a treat for ya"

I finally unwrapped it (the DVD...) and watched with a beer on a rainly LA morning. Like other posters, I seemd to miss hearing dialogue that I KNEW I heard in the theater. Kept going back and upping the volume.

One thing that I noticed on this third viewing was Jack's smile to the rodeo clown afer offering to buy him a drink. It seemed like a definite come on. Don't recall it as such when I saw film first two times.

I'm really tired of crying with this one. I will either put it away for long time or donate it to local libaray. Anyone else feel the same?

I just finished watching it for the first time tonight on my dvd player..wow I was completly blown away..I could feel the heartache, the love, the laughter and the tears...Of course I cried my eyes out..its still so powerful seeing it again. I noticed more of Jack's reaching out to Ennis though out the years..really wanting and hoping for them to have a life together..I also noticed Ennis denials and refusals to live with Jack on a more premant basis. I also realized at the end of the movie that Ennis does bring Jack home in his heart and in his soul by bringing in the two shirts..and hanging the post card..It tells me that he acknowleding his love for Jack and keeping the memory of his love close to his heart...
I didn' t notice in the second tent scene with Jack saying its allright..I may have missed it..it looked to me that they spoke with thier eyes, and thier expressing thier love without saying anything..I did try and listen for it but I think I missed it..the second tent scene was so tender and loving and beautiful...
I am so glad that the movie was made..and because its so wonderful and makes you realize that love can be had and hold close to your heart and soul

Yes, I just bought the DVD and did the same as you.

I knew of and heard the "I'm Sorry" before but i did the subs now too and I heard and saw exactly what you did.

"I'm Sorry"  "It's alright, It's alright" "Come here, lie back"

I KNEW I WAS RIGHT! yay!! :D! haha! I never heard the "Come here, lie back"  before but that makes it even sweeter!! Awww!!!

And I believe you are right, it is ALL said by Jack, not Ennis. "I'm sorry" 2 "Its Alrights" and "Come here, like back" is all said by Jack!  yay I LOVE THAT SCENE EVEN MORE KNOW. HAHA!

I watched DVD tonight. I did see certain scenes are a little longer than the movie, maybe just by few seconds for example the two tent scenes. But the last scenes of the movie really caught my attention. After Ennis daughter left, he came in from the door and found the sweater she left behind He was walking from behind the camera and opened a door on the left side of the camera view. Does those trailers usually have two doors on the same side? Then when Ennis first walked into the trailer, the windows on both sides of him was shaded with blades, but when he folded the sweater and opened the closet door, the window behind the closet door was without blades and showing the view of outside. That is a little odd to me. Any one can explain?

Yes, trailers of that period have two doors on the same side.  I own one very similar to Ennis's.

As for the blinds: I think you just thought you saw blinds on both sides because there are no blinds on the side of the trailer opposite from the door side.

Please note the closet and window behind Alma Jr. There are no blinds.

I bought the wide-screen version. It looks great on the tv, and even better on my computer monitor. Both the tent scenes look significantly better on the tv. You can actually see what's going on now. I don't know if they lightened it for the dvd release or if it just translates better to a smaller screen, but it's almost like they've got overhead lights in the tent now.

The sound is better, too. Ennis says, "I'm sorry," to Jack when he comes into the tent for the second tent scene, Jack tells him, "It's all right, come here." I swear, I didn't hear ANY of that in the theater.

Also when they kiss, there's a thin string of saliva between their lips.

I didn't like the way they divided the scenes. Sometimes I had to fast foward through several scenes to get to the one I was wanting to watch again.

I kept noticing little things that I missed before during the three times I saw it in the theater. I guess it's because now I can slow it down and really take a look at what's on the screen.

For example:

The sign on Aguirre's trailer door: Trespassers will be shot. Survivors will be shot again.

Check out the beans cooking in the cans on the grill.  I think somoene here has mentioned this before, but I wanted to point it out again:  The label reads BEANS on the bottom and at the top, Better Most: B B M (Broke Back Mountain).

After the sheep is killed by a coyote, a few scenes later, there's a skinned coyote on a pole, with its tail blowing in the breeze.

When Ennis shoots the elk, and Jack yells, "Woo-wee!" and Ennis shoves him back, I never noticed how Jack does that giggle before...

When Ennis gets the first postcard, he tells Alma, "We was fishing buddies," and goes into the living room. The blue chair in the living room, has a broken leg and sets crooked on the floor.

Want to see something really fascinating? Watch the scene where they jump off the cliff into the water in slow motion.

Also, watch the scene where Jack is beaten by the mechanics in slow motion (frame by frame). One of the attackers is a black man. The other two men are the two mechanics seen in the trailer. They pull his legs apart, and stomp on Jack's crotch. And you can actually see the tire iron make contact with his face. In the theater, it happened so fast, I didn't see any of that...

The scene with Jack's mother and father, when she asks if he wants a piece of cherry cake, there really is a cherry cake sitting on the kitchen counter next to the aluminum foil. It's a sort of a pound cake and you can see one of the cherries.

Again, I was startled by the starkness of the house, inside and out. The dry grass and sunbaked house, outside. The white bare walls, sparsely furnished rooms inside. The only real color is the mother's blue sweater. The coffee cups - none of them match. This really was a poor family. (Now when I hear the bartender tell Jack about Lureen and her dad selling $100,000.00 tractors, and how he looks at her with renewed interest, I wonder if THAT'S why he married her...?)

When Ennis is leaving, and the old man starts talking, and the mother puts her hand to her throat, and then she tells Ennis, "You come back and see us again..." for some reason, I cried this time at that line of dialogue, when I never did before. I felt SO sorry for that poor woman, and I really felt that she and Jack had suffered SO much at the hands of that old man.

The scene in Jack's bedroom - there's an light shaped like an anchor on the wall - I read somewhere that Ennis Del Mar translated from Spanish means Island in the Sea. Ennis was Jack's anchor.

Also look at the books on Jack's desk. There's a book with a bucking bronco on the cover. Of course, there's the tiny toy horse with the little cowboy figure on it. I never noticed before, the tears on Ennis's face when he looks up after putting the horse back down on the desk.

I made screen captures of most of the things I mentioned here, but I don't know how to post them here...  How do you guys do it?

Anything else you've noticed that you didn't see before?

Wow, Johnny, some of that stuff was stuff that I already noticed, but you went into detail with this. For some reason I've only watched it once since I bought it. My mom is going to try to make my dad watch it tonight. My brothers don't think it will happen.

Now, while I've only watched it all the way through once, I have fast forwarded to several scenes just to check on things. It's annoying that some of the chapters are really long, though. I wanted to show my mom something during the Thanksgiving meal at Jack's house, and I had to fast forward past the part where he comes up because of the divorce going through, which just happens to be one of my favorite scenes. She was waiting right there though, and said we couldn't watch it, because she had to go to bed soon, and if we watched too much, she would want me to start at the beginning so we could watch the whole thing. I had no idea that my mom was obsessed, too.

Anyway, the point is that I noticed the glasses that his family is using during their Thanksgiving meal. It's the same glasses that my family uses at Thanksgiving. My mom said that in the 1970s those glasses were a dozen for ten bucks at the grocery store, so everyone bought them, and nobody got rid of them because they looked too fancy to throw out.

2nd tent scene: when they're kissing there's suddenly huuge fire at the backround.. and after that ..naughty Ang Lee ;D (yet there's nothing naughty in that scene, just so sweet and beautiful)

about dinner-sets, dishes: my mom have "hundreds" of cups, plates and bowls in cupboards, also same horrible 70'-80's pyrex-bowl with vegetables/berries on the side, yaiks, but now I love it  ;D

I just watched the DVD...granted it was on our older tV without the surround sound..and was very disappointed with the quality of both the sound and the picture...couldn't hear a lot of the dialogue..even the music didn't sound right.....maybe it was just my TV///anyone else experience this? Do I just have a bad copy? Got it at Wal Mart

I got mine at Wal-Mart and the sound and picture quality were fine. I've only watched it on my parent's tv, though. Mine is smaller and cheaper.

Maybe so...but why is JACK apologizing?  He didn't do anything.  It was Ennis who rode off that morning without talking to Jack.  :(

He is not appologizing IMO, he is seeing how apprahensive Ennis is and aknowledging ( this word always bothers me when i have to spell it...)  this and saying "I'm sorry (but) it's alright" I think the I'm sorry is for beeing so straight forward the first time.

I agree with you. He's apologizing for pulling Ennis into it so fast, which would explain why the second tent scene is so slow and tender.

After the DVD sitting on my desk since April 4, I finally unwrapped it and watched the DVD on my small TV set. It was the most emotional viewing I had after seeing it 8 times in the theatre. I guess the subtitle and the privacy of home did it and I was sobbing. Gosh -- how much tears do I still have to shed? The last BBM and the scene at the parents house got me bad. I could just let my emotions out at home. It was great.

It is amazing that I still picked up something that I had not seen before. I saw Alam washing clothes through the window when Ennis was picking up crying babies plus other little details.

Very small. Actually it lets you see different things. On the big screen, I could only pay attention to the facial expressions.

I agree with you all heartily, I watched all the extras on the DVD but not the movie, will wait until I get back from the hospital on saturday to vegetate and watch it alone with some alphabits wrapped under my baby blanket!
I cried to easely while watching the extras, so it still tares your heart out.

The way I see it it is more likely that it is Jack, he does not apologize but sees how apprehensive Ennis is and says he is sorry for speeding it, but it is alright, come here. Would Ennis EVER apologize??? for anything??? he might mean to but say it??? No...makes more sense for it to be Jack

Ennis apologized to Cassie.

I am certain that Ennis says I'm sorry,.  Although his mouth doesn't move, it doesn't sound like the It's alright voice, which is clearly Jack because he nods his head and we see his lips move.

Ennis could be apologizing for the way he reacted the night before:  forceful and rough instead of intimate,  and he could also be apologizing for ignoring Jack the next morning.

Dirtbiker,  Thanks for the suggestion.  I will have to try the headphones.

Just got done watching it a little while ago at my friends house. Cried my eyes out. I started getting teary earlier in the film. Tonight, their time up on brokeback was so sad. I mean I know how it ends and just seeing that time of innocence and falling in love and what could/should have been really hit me more than ever tonight.  :'(

I noticed their meeting after the blue parka scene was longer- I never heard Ennis say "Look what I brought" in the theater and I don't remember seeing them riding together in that scene. I also never noticed that Jack giggled after Ennis said he'd have gotten lucky if that harmonica had broken.

I still didn't hear "come here lie back" I had heard the I'm sorry, It's alright in the theater but I missed the "come here lie back"- I guess I'll have to keep watching that scene until I hear it!  ;)  I also tried to listen for Ennis saying I love you to the shirts but I didn't hear anything except what sounded like him taking a breath or exhaling. I'll watch that part again too.

It feels so weird to have them home. I've never felt so privaleged to own a movie before.

you guys are cracking me up.  the same discussions are going on at dave cullens forum.  we are so all the same/
did you all hear jack say f*&k_____me when in FNIT.  look and listen real hard.  YOU ALL NEED TO BUY EARPHONES. When he and ennis are going at it in FNIT in the beginning after ennis goes in...watch jack and listen so close and you will hear a muffled f--k and then you will hear me (the me is really discernable).  I swear I got that feeling of lust when I heard that and my mouth was wide open in shock.  I played it twice.  Also, in the I'm sorry-it's allright, it's allright=it is jack.  I believe jack says i'm sorry because of spit string.  i don't think that was scripted.  i think he jake/playing jack was actually apologizing to heath playing ennis and it was just a natural jake thing to say i'm sorry for the spit string to heath but it got in the scene.  it is so cool.  i had the screener for weeks but never listened with earphones (don't you just love hearing the wind so loudly too?).  Also, when ennis says he is going up to the sheep in the drunk around fire scene and jack says "give em hell"...that is like what?  silly statement.  i never heard this all before.  it is like i am a kid in a candystore.  at first my tv played it so dark and i couldn't fix it.  finally after i calmed down--i found out how to adjust brightness-the default had the FNIT like in black- i had to raise it from mid level brightness (which was dark with dvd) to all the way up and now the tent scene looks like it is in daylight.  Is this cool or what?  and I have seen movie about 50 times.  yes, I know I am nuts. lol

you know what happens watching it on small screen...you fall in LOVE with jack and jakes acting.  in the big screen you don't have enough time to see the expressions that make every scene jake is in work.  ennis is the big fish on big screen.  on small screen you get to see all the wonderful facial expressions and the little subtle moves of jack.  i had the screener and it turned me into thinking jake did as good or better a job of acting as heath.  and i fell in love with jack.

I knew he was reading the post card but could never figure out why he was reading it with his lips moving.  Then I thought maybe because Annie said he was farsighted so I figured he had trouble reading it.  Then to, maybe he didn't learn to read much because of that.  It must have been next to impossible to get him glasses they were so poor.

But no, no sound came out of his mouth.

Farsighted people hold things AWAY, not closer...maybe HEATH is nearsighted, even though Ennis is supposed to be farsighted.

What about this one, for istance? We can see it in the trailer, but not in the movie.

sorry, I know this is a bit of a non sequitur, not related to the conversation that's been going on, but I'm only 6 minutes into my first DVD viewing (!) and I already have comments: Ennis walks into Brokeback; Jack drives in suddenly in his black pickup.  Like the way Ennis gradually eases into their relationship while Jack dives in headfirst.  And his black truck is so striking against the landscape: look out!  And Ennis does.  Ahh . . . bliss.  :)

Watched the DVD for the 2nd time tonight. I noticed that our boys' time on BBM is only 40 minutes or so. The more I see it, the shorter it gets.

My tears always start at the last scene of Jack and Ennis. The scene when Ennis embraced Jack from behind makes me cry every single time.

This time - the line "To Alma and Kurt" with a toast got me really bad. No one made a toast for Jack and Ennis.  :'( :'( :'(

Now I am exhausted again after seeing it.

Especially if you couple that with the look Ennis has when Alma tells him. WHen he looks out the window. He really understands what he has lost and what he could have had.

At first, I kinda worried I might not enjoy this DVD because ... the screen is small! (It's a 32 inch sony, but compare to the big screen in the theater, oh well..) I couldn't even read the "trespasser will be shot" sign on the trailer door because it's all a blur! But, later, I started to pick up something I didn't notice during my 3 viewings in the theater. The tv screen is small, and I can't read the signs, but it's easier to pick up characters' body languages, especially their facial expressions. The most obvious one (that I didn't notice) was the scene when Ennis was at Jack's parents' house and Jack's father was first telling him jack's "crazy" ideas. For a brief moment, right before the shot moved back to Jack's father, I saw a faint smile on Ennis' face.

Other than that, the dark scenes are brighter on tv, so I saw more details (aka the first tent scene :p ) I didn't know Jack was hitting the floor (and with Ennis' hand?!). This scene was just too dark in the movie theater.

Hi this is my first message, sorry if the words are not all good but I'm from the Netherlands. I have seen brokeback Mountain many times, but unfortunately its not yet out on DVD here. But I'm very curious about the extras on the DVD. I like the movie very much and noticed many things after seeing the movie so much. I started collecting all movies from Heath and Jake and think the are excellent actors.

Hello Petra. Welcome and thanks for posting your first one. You have found a home for BBM. Enjoy your time here.

Regarding the extras. In the US, the DVD comes with the following

Features:  Documentaries ("On Being a Cowboy: Directing from the Heart: Ang Lee" "From Script to Screen: Interviews with Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana" "Sharing the Story: The Making of Brokeback Mountain")

Hope to see you and read your posts sometimes.  :)

I just watched brokeback for the third time..wow..I did pick up more this time than I have other times..i still cried my eyes out though  :'( :'(  I never noticed that at the last tent scene they were holding each other or cuddling in sleep..I also noticed the lightening when Jack was sleeping with the dog by him..and I did notice the tap Ennis gave him when he was bringing the fire wood to camp...I still didn't hear the words spoken in the second  scene either..I did try though and I didn't hear anything but grunts in the first tent scene as well..this movie just grabs and hits your heart and brings the tears..its so powerful and beautiful, the love they had, the love that lasted all those years..I also realized that the last postcard that was sent Ennis was reaching out to Jack..telling him that he wanted to get together and maybe they could work something out..just catching that brought even more tears to my eyes.. :'( :'( then with the shirts in the end when he is holding them..wow..this movie drains you emotionally on all levels...I feel very drained..but at same time I am in awe of the movie and how wonderful and powerfull it is..that love lasts and be something worth fighting for, and something worth keeping close to your heart..

After seeing this wonderful, beautiful, heartbreaking film in the theaters nine times, and probably more than that since I've gotten the DVD...I saw something today I never noticed before.  When Ennis and Jack are having their arguement by the river (their last meeting)...after Jack says "I wish I knew how to quit you!"...when Ennis turns around to say "Then why don't you, why don't you just leave me alone."  He turns around so fast a tear drops down...I swear I never saw that before.  It took my breath away.    :'(      And another thing I just noticed...I believe Jake is left handed.   Donna

saw the first 40 minutes this morning, while waiting to be relieved... and in the first tent scene...after Jack hits his hands on th groudn when they have sex, lo and behold, thay hold hands :) That just turned tha scene around for me... I have thought it was just about the sex and that the second one was about love, but this little thing just made it more than just sex, they held hands  during sex th first time... my oh my :)

Some bizarre experience I had yesterday, I kept switching from the original version to the French dubbed one.  One particular moment, in French, stucked me very hard.

After the Motel scene when Ennis comes back home to pick up clothes and stuff for his first "fishing trip", Alma is left alone in the house holding Junior and crying.

In French it's a bit different, she holds Junior, she cries and whispers to her daughter "serres moi fort" (hold me tight)

 :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

Interesting addition I would say, I just cried buckets when I realized.  Same now while I'm posting  :'(

Bloody DVD, I watched the scene over and over again in English, she sobs and say something like "give me your hand"  :'( :'( :'(

Please, I don't want a new thread like did she or did she not said it, PLIZE!.  Loop viewing of scenes is not recommended by your doctor BTW.

I will not!

I could wait 7 days for you to start it.

I never heard Ennis say "I love you" in the closet scene.

I never heard Jack say f*ck me in the first tent scene.

 :-X Alma said something...

I will not start this thread...  :P

Well, did you guys also hear Ennis saying "Later + Come here" in the Reunion scene (1st kiss, just before going upstairs to Alma). The whole story is getting very hot, if so ;D.
Yes I heard the "Come here" and "Later" in the reunion scene...so this only goes to prove that you can't trust the subtitles, because the subtitles aren't there for this.  And in the SNIT I still can't hear Jack say "Come on lie back", but its there in the subtitles.  Sooo....

I thought Alma was saying "Its alright" when she was holding Alma Jr...probably trying to convince herself it would be alright.   :'(.

I re-watched this time with subtiltes, in English she is just sobbing, in French they added the whisper to Junior "serres moi fort" it makes the scene even more poignant  :'(

I saw them as well the first time, and the thing that makes it so powerful is that IMO that is the first time Ennis really shows how he feels without beeing violent  :'( He isn't crying because he wants Jack to leave him, but because Jack sas he wish he could leave him and Ennis, even tho he'd rather eat dung than admit it, is afraid that Jack might just do that... leave...

then off course he does and thats when Ennis cries again, with the shirts

I finally watched the DVD with my 14 year old son yesterday.  I think he was a little shocked, and he said he didn't entirely understand it, but he liked it.  His only comment during the movie was that Jack had buff arms (2nd tent scene), lol.  I can tell he's been thinking about it, because this morning he asked how old Emmylou Harris was in 1975 (re the scene where Jack is driving away and crying), and he also mentioned that he thought Lureen and Jack's house looked just like ours from what he saw in the phone call from Ennis scene (our house is late 70s and not remodeled yet, yuck).  Odd attention to detail, but at least I know he was paying attention, lol.  He understood the significance of the shirts right away, smart kid  It'll be interesting to see what questions/comments he comes up with as time goes by.

I did cut it a bit.  I skipped all the sex scenes because he hasn't seen anything like that in movies yet, and frankly, I'm not ready to watch that with my kid (although he did know what they were doing...).  That was all.   I didn't skip the kissing scenes, which IMO are pretty erotic.  I did tell him there were two kissing parts and that he could cover his eyes if he didn't want to watch, but he did watch.

For those of you who are wondering why I would let a young teenager watch BBM, this is a boy who is very devout in his way.  He's read the Bible every night for more than two years and he prays every night.  We attend a liberal church, and he knows people who are gay (his writing teacher is a lesbian and he likes her a lot), but I know he feels conflicted between his spiritual feelings and what he knows about respecting and having compassion for others.  Plus, of course, he's a teenage boy and gay or straight, teenage boys are a conflicted bunch.  We've talked about this a lot, but I felt it was important for him to see who Jack and Ennis are, that they're just people stuck in a hard situation.  I didn't want to wait until he was older because you just never know how a parental relationship with a teenager is going to go, and right now we are very close, enough so that I still have more influence over him than his peer group does.

Now I've got to go back and see if our house really does look like Lureen's!

I don't think he knows about this site, but I do hope he feels that way.  I know he didn't want to see it at first--I think he thought it was going to be "mushy."  Two guys being mushy he couldn't handle, but two guys wrestling, OK (even with the kissing, lol).

CAmom, thank you for sharing your story.  I think it is wonderful that you shared the movie with your son.  I think it is even more wonderful that a 14 year old paid so much attention to it.  As I was reading I thought, whoops, there is a gay interior decorator in the making.   ;D  (buff arms and Jack's home like yours) But, no matter how he turns out he has a wonderful mom that he can always be proud of.  Does he know of your love for BBM?  If so, what does he think of that? Some kids have all the luck when it comes to moms.   :'(   Oh, one last question, is he your only child?  If so, how disappointed would you be if he someday told you he was gay?  Which brings up yet another question.  Did you show him the movie because you have suspicions he might be gay?

Wonderful mom!  :-*

I had to laugh at your interior decorator quip--if you saw any of his artwork, you wouldn't think that!  Not the artsy type at all.  As a matter of fact, he's outside playing Airsoft with a bunch of his friends.  Definitely more the militaristic type (oh, Lord, please don't make him want to go to West Point...ugh).  Um, your questions...oh yeah, he knows about my BBM obsession.  He thinks I'm a loon, although he likes the soundtrack and doesn't mind hearing it over and over.  The only movie he's really that nutty over is "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," lol.

He's my oldest son; I also have a 10 year old (who also knows about BBM).  I don't think I'd be "disappointed" if he was gay, but to be honest, my heart would grieve for him a little.  The idea of people thinking badly of him would be hard for me.  I don't have any ideas about his sexuality, really.  He's a little young for 14, still more interested in baseball, Airsoft, and goofing around than romance.  We'll see what the future holds.

Camom,

I think it's wonderful that you shared this movie with your son! I'm a little envious because my oldest is 10 {11 in June} but she is too young to see it.  I plan on sharing this with my daughters when they are a little older. They do know about the movie- mostly how it makes me cry-lol. I'm pretty certain my girls think I am a loon too.  :) They've seen the screen saver {no intimate scenes on it} and have caught me on the pc crying while watching some of the videos. It has opened a bit of a dialogue- my oldest made reference to two men hugging and she had come in while I was on here and saw the reunion kiss avatar and asked me about it. It gave me the opportunity to explain a little bit {without going into great detail} about how there were all kinds of love/relationships and none were wrong. Sometimes it's so hard to find an age appropriate explanation for things.

My younger son will be 10 on May 1, and I've talked to him about BBM quite a bit, too, but you're right, it's a little harder for that age level to understand.  The main thing is for him to know that relationships can be different from just a mom/dad kind of thing, and there's nothing wrong with it.  He likes the soundtrack a lot, too--he asked me to play "A Love That Will Never Grow Old" yesterday.  Someday I'll watch the movie with him, too.

Thank you, all of you, for your kind remarks.  Sometimes raising a child seems like such an uphill battle, especially in these days.  We are what you would call "progressive" Christians, and at times I feel like the evangelicals are just running right over us.  Sigh.

I still need to go back and look at that scene when Lureen is on the phone.  My son said there was a really ugly lamp "like the fixtures we used to have."  Those all went to the dump, but you should have seen them.  Truly frightening.

Camom,

What a wonderful post and what a wonderful thing to do with your son. ( I applaud both his taste in movies and in moms btw) With all the hate-filled ranting that we hear endlessly from from the "Christian" right wingers, I empathize with your feeling like your spiritual take on things just gets shouted down. But what a beautiful counter example you shared above. Gives me a little more hope for the future. Now I'm off to watch the DVD again myself, as I am "batching"  it this weekend while my hubby is crawling around in a cave in Virginia.

Got mine yesterday. Didn't find any thread to post my reaction in so I'll give it here:

Brokeback Mountain - DVD review 25th April 2006 by Katie:

Let me first say: I didn’t sob at all this time. Maybe a half of tear but that’s it. The viewing was the same as the first viewing at the cinema when it took ca 10 days before I reacted. I’ve seen BBM twice on the big screen, and read the novel twice. (I have cried during one wath and one reading, not more…)

I could NOT see that they were flirting from the start, I could just see 2 confused young guys beeing desperate on intimacy up in the maountains that summer –63. I fully understand Ennis choice of not “going for it” with Jack. How would he know that a relationship with Jack would be better than a family life with wonderful Alma? Of course he couldn’t know, and I am not sure of if it would have been better. Ennis would still be the same person, and maybe he would have find a woman and beeing unfaithful to Jack. And then Jack. All I could see was a rather imature person beeing very unrealistic, not learning from mistakes, he should have quit Ennis from start! I think that Jack hurted Ennis’ family a lot!

The extramaterial was ok but a little dissapointing. I have never seen Heath Ledger beeing interviewed before and to me he sounded a bit (excuse me here!!) retarded! Probably because he lisps! I have never before seen Jake Gyllenhaal beeing interviewed either. Jake seemed to me to be a extremely professional and also mature person, very intelligent and sending out good vibes to others…while Heath gave the impression of beeing a rather nervous guy (those sunglasses he had in the interview…why? why? why?), tense and…. “Does he smoke majja a lot or what?” I wondered. The colour setting in the interview versus the one of the clips they showed paralelly was not at all correlated.. gave the impression of creating this DVD:s extra material in a hurry.

Not having subtitles of my own native language was a problem of me not getting as affected ar I would have been. The smaller screen was not the problem. I had the English subtitles on and them showing “huh!” every time they said so in the film was rather irritating. But I didn’t want to turn the sutitles off, since I don’t hear everythign they say otherwise.

Another thing. FNIT was not at all as I remembered it. He actually spitted, I didn’t notice that before (can you believe I was that blind?).

Heath is very shy and that is why he is waring shades I guess, and he is not comfotalbel speaking outside of his roles in public :)

I do not agree with some of the things you said butu are entitled to u'r opinion :) And I don't remember seeing anyone spit, there was aline OF spit when tya kissed but those of us that have kissed knows that happens unless you kiss with lips tightly shut... I personally found that to add to the realism of the film :)

Ennis spits another time, also...when he is raking Jack over the coals about Mexico, after he says "I mean it!" He turns around and spits..looks like he's spitting the fingernails he was biting when he was telling Jack he couldn't make it in August.  There are so many little things in this movie to discuss...I love it! :)

I felt Ennis and Jack's pain and sorrow along with thier joy and happiness that they felt with each other. It really is a geunine love story. It seems that each time I watch the movie I feel drained after watching it..like numb inside and seeing Ennis saying "Jack I swear..." rips me to piecies..I hope that he finally realizes the love he had and how special it was..each time I see the part before the fight scene and there sleeping cuddling together looking so peaceful and unaware of what is come..and then the next day with the fight and Ennis crumbling to the ground..it just makes this movie so powerful and gut punching and wonderrful all at the same time.

I did notice at the second tent scene jack saying its allright and Ennis saying I am sorry..I am pretty sure I heard that..I did not hear the f*** me in the first tent scene though..all I heard was grunting and all..no words..and I did have the volume all the way turned up too..maybe next time I will put the subtitles on and see if It comes up there

each time I see this movie I appreciate its depth and beauty every time..

We all do.

I just love the fact that I've got the DVD and can watch the whole thing, or even just a tiny little bit, every time I need to (which is often)

JACK AND ENNIS, I LOVE YOU!

Had my 4th DVD viewing yesterday. Jack and Ennis, I love you more after each viewing.

At the end of movie, I always roll the credit and listen to "He is a Friend of Mine" and "The Maker Made" and to let my emotions settled down - but often found me with more tears.

As I was watching the credit roll yesterday, I looked the names and said thank you to each one of them for making this movie possible. What a brilliant moive Brokeback Mountain is.

It's hard to me to catch all the words Ennis says even I have had the DVD. First, because of my bad English, second, the subtitues is...,
Unfortunately, my damn DVD has a scratch so I can't watch the last scene - when Ennis comes to Jack's home ....Can u tell me what will happen next?  :t)
And, if  u don't mind, can u up this part to somewhere for me to download? Thank you very much.... really like this film, but hardly to get all the idea it's about
Sorry about my bad English...

Wow, Diepcon, if  that's the last segment that you can see on your DVD..you are missing a significant part of the film!
Anyway, in short, he is invited to look up Jack's room , there  he finds on a hanger, his shirt, stained in his own blood, ,tucked in Jack's shirt from the times in Brokeback, then and there he realizes that Jack truly loved him,he embraces the shirts with the hanger with love...almost kissing them..his mother allowes him to take the shirts, but his repellent father doesn't want to spread the ashes on BBM,It ends in Ennis's trailer, his daughter came to tell him she's getting married, and when she leaves,he opens his closet, and we see on the closet door ,the shirts are hanging there but now Ennis's shirt is over Jack's..he straightens the BBM postcard, and buttons Jack's shirt..
He looks at them with tears in his eyes and says,   " Jack,I swear...:
The End..

I would like to share  my thoughts after seeng the movie.

First of all, my emotional were like this: "AWWWW..."
 :_( :_( :_( :_( :_( :_( :_( :_( :_( :_(

Then this: were like "NNOOOOO!!!!!"
(t) (t) (t)  (t) (t) (t) (t) (t) (t) (t)

Finally third Stage: were like: "It CAN"T BEEE!!!!!"
 ^*) ^*) ^*) ^*) ^*) ^*) ^*) ^*) ^*) ^*)

To be honestly, I grew up in a strick education family, and this is the first time that I've seen this type of movie which touched the gay-theme subject. I don't see gayness but all I see is 2 souls are in deeply love each other. Wish there was someone who love me like they. I was very touched by Ennis' & Jack's love. Their love is soooooo emotional, heartbreaking, sweet, romantic, tragic, and passion. All I see is just 2 human being in love each other depsite whether they're 2 guys or not. If it's a hetero couple then this movie is just another Titanic film. Seeing the love of Ennis/Jack, they reminded me of couples: Romeo/Juliet and Jack/Rose(Titanic).

I always love happy ending but this movie won't have it. By the time the last scene ended and the credits rolling; still I was staring into the TV black screen. I must admitted the movie was excellent because of the good acting by Heath & Jake, great directing by Ang Lee, and wonderful story and screen-play by Larry&Diana and Annie. Thanks too all of them for creating such a touchy movie like Brokeback Mountain.

And about the gay-theme in the movie. what I'm seeing that they deeply love each other just like any other hetero couples, like us. Why do we stop them? Worse, even kill them? It's no one else business. They didn't harm staright people. All they're doing is what we doing; loving another living soul, loving another human being.

Looking thru the history of movies. Back then, there are movies that addressed the slave African people wanted equal rights. I was like why do we racist to African people? I know I'm not. They're just people, like human who have 2 eyes, 2 hands, 2 feet, and 1 heart right? I've never acted any racist toward anyone in my life, ever. I'm a liberal and open-minded person. I would love be friended to any people whether they're: Jews, Africans, Asians, Homosexuals, or Disabilty people. I don't judge by the cover of the book, that theory I used in people also. What I judge is the good moral character, virtue. As long as they are a good person/character then I would be friended with them.

I agree with you totally, people should be able to love whoever they want to and this movie stirs so many emotions within us, it touches our hearts and souls. :ghug:

mods...

please tell me if this is a wrong place for this post..  ^f^

but when i saw this a few days ago i was blown away  (t) .. i went back in my DVD and tried to sort this out, see if it was true... and i saw most of it (some i knew about already, but so many..)

... NOW.. only NOW after having seen the film for more than 25 times...

goofs in BBM.....

how about you all?

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0388795/goofs (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0388795/goofs)

Crew or equipment visible: When Ennis tells Alma that he and Jack are going fishing, he hands Alma Jr. to her. While in her mother's arms, Junior's pajama top hikes up and you can see her microphone cord.

Continuity: Jack is chopping wood when Aguirre approaches to give news of his sick uncle. Jack places the next log on the chopping block as he turns to speak to Aguirre. After the conversation is over and Jack turns back to chopping, the log is gone and he replaces the log that was never chopped.

Anachronisms: When Cassie dances with Ennis the first time (in the late 1970s), the jukebox is playing Steve Earle's revamped version of "The Devil's Right Hand," which first came out in 1987-8.

Continuity: During Jack's first and second bull rides, his free hand alternates several times from being his left or right hand. Since he's obviously not letting go to switch hands, either some shots are flipped or the sequence is edited from several takes.

Continuity: When Ennis and Alma are playing in the snow after sledding down the mountain, Ennis's hat is covering/not covering his ears between shots.

Anachronisms: When Ennis was driving Alma Jr. home from the bar where Alma and his waitress girlfriend have met, along the path in the background, next to the Dodge Neon, is a RV or trailer car. These had not been introduced yet.

Anachronisms: When Ennis gets into a fight in front of the bar after leaving Alma's house on Thanksgiving, the bar's "Budweiser" neon light is an italic logo from the late 1990s.

Continuity: When Jack is in Mexico, the same boy (in a blue striped shirt) runs behind him twice.

Continuity: When Ennis and Jack are fighting on the hill, the day they leave, and Jack knees Ennis in the nose, he gets up to help him. He puts his hands on Ennis' shoulders, but in the next shot, his right wrist is being used to soak up the blood from Ennis' bloody nose.

Anachronisms: Leading up to the argument that sparks the Del Mar divorce (finalized on 6 November 1975), Ennis is on the couch watching "Einsatz in Manhattan" (1973) on a Saturday night. Kojak didn't air on Saturday nights until its 5th season, 1977-8.

Anachronisms: Ennis gets a postcard from Jack which reads, "Ennis, see you in a couple weeks, fish should be jumping. Jack." The postmark is Childress, Texas, July 1972. A couple of weeks later, Jack is driving a blue Ford truck with a 1976-7 grill.

Continuity: Supermarket scene. An end row of bottles is hit/broken. When the camera moves back, the bottles are again upright and intact.

Anachronisms: The tractor trailer rigs are too modern for the time period. At the beginning of the movie the tractor used in the film wasn't the kind rolling along the highways in the 1960s.

Continuity: The first postcard from Jack has no address. The only clue to his address is the post mark. Yet when Ennis writes back, he addresses his card to RFD 2, Childress, Texas. He would have had no way of knowing Jack's rural route number.

Continuity: Ennis, standing in the river washing a coffee pot with a rag, pauses to look up and spots Jack on horseback in the distance on a mountainside. Ennis then slings the washrag over his right shoulder and starts to exit the river. In the next scene, as he exits the river onto the riverbank, the washrag is gone from his shoulder and back to being held in his right hand.

Continuity: When Jack rides into camp complaining that he is "commutin' four hours a day" he takes off one glove, the one on his left hand, to feel the coffee pot. It then shows him drinking coffee with his left hand and the right hand glove is still on and he is holding the glove from the left hand with his right hand. When Ennis says (the second time) "I wouldn't mind being out there" it shows Jack with the coffee cup still in his left hand but the glove from his right hand is now off.

Anachronisms: When Jack is at the bar, turning around to eye Lureen, just before she approaches him for the first time, soft contact lens are visible in his eyes.

Continuity: At the beginning of the movie where we first see Jack Twist driving up in his truck, the window on the passenger side is up as evidenced by the reflections off the glass. Then as the truck turns into the parking lot, the same window is now down.

Continuity: Towards the end of the movie when Alma Jr. visits her dad in his trailer, he goes to the cupboard to get them a drink and cups. The cupboard door at Ennis' head is seen alternately opened and closed without him touching it.

Crew or equipment visible: When they are being viewed from a far as they play with their shirts off, on the far left there is filming equipment visible within the trees.

Anachronisms: The type of fireworks display in the 4th of July scene was unheard of in the United States during the 1960s. At that time, almost all fireworks used in the U.S. were made in the U.S., and were generally fired one at a time. Chinese-made fireworks did not become prevalent in the United States until after trade relations were opened up with China in 1972. The low-level Chinese-style fireworks shown in the film were not imported into the United States during the 1960s and did not become popular in fireworks displays in the U.S. until the 1990s at the earliest.

Anachronisms: On the mountain in 1963, Jack is looking at the moon and smoking a cigarette with the American Spirit logo printed on it. This company was founded in 1982.

Continuity: Alma Jr., age 4, has blue eyes, at age 19 they are brown.

Anachronisms: During the scene in the supermarket where Alma works in the 1960s, plastic cranberry juice bottles with yellow, plastic twist lids on a shelf are visible behind Ennis' head. These bottles would have been glass until the early 1990's.

Continuity: In the scene when Jack tells Ennis "you have no idea how bad it gets", Jack's gloves switch from his right hand to his left hand.

Continuity: When Aguirre comes to tell Jack about his sick uncle, Jack has the ax in his right hand. When the conversation is over and Aguirre rides away, the ax is in Jack's left hand.

Revealing mistakes: During the rather important kitchen sink conversations after the family holiday dinner, a props tag is plainly visible on a dish's underside. As the dish is conspicuously hand-washed under running water, the underside faces the camera and the large masking tape tag with marker lettering goes unacknowledged by the cast.

Continuity: In the scene where Jack Twist is first introduced to Alma by Ennis, her purse is on her left shoulder and her arms are down - immediately in the next scene when she is shown, her arms are folded across her chest in a "defensive" stance.

Continuity: When imitating a rodeo ride at the camp, Jack is holding a bottle in his left hand and has his hat on. In the next shot he is holding the hat in his left hand.

Crew or equipment visible: (At 01:45:00) During their argument at the fishing place, you can clearly see the camera setup that has been left on one of the cars.

Continuity: When Jack arrives at Aguirre's trailer his pickup is parked nose in, but when he and Ennis are back from the mountain and Ennis is helping him get his truck started, it is facing nose out.

Anachronisms: Early in the film (1963, Wyoming) a train is seen crossing the screen without a caboose. Cabooses were required by law on all trains into the 1980s.

Revealing mistakes: During the hail storm scene on Brokeback Mountain, although one can hear the wind blowing very hard, the trees in the distance remain still.

Anachronisms: The first reunion of Jack and Ennis is on 24th September 1967. On the next day 25th, they went onto the mountains and at that night there was a full moon. However, the full moon of September 1967 should be at 18th day, not 24th or 25th.

Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): When Jack rides the bull (at the same rodeo where he meets Lureen), he is thrown to the ground before the eight-second buzzer sounds. This should have counted as a no-score.

Revealing mistakes: When Ennis comes back to camp late at night after he encounters the bear, Jack asks him where he's been. It's supposed to be cold but when Jack talks you can't see his breath. When Ennis tells his story about the bear, you can see his breath, but when they continue talking, neither one's breath can be seen in the cold night air.

Continuity: The fight Jack and Ennis the last time they are on Brokeback Mountain: Jack clearly has no mustache during the argument, but when Ennis drives off, Jack has a full grown mustache.

Continuity: Jack has a mustache throughout the scene when he fights with Ennis toward the end. There is a brief flashback when Jack thinks of how they 'used to be' when he had no mustache, years ago. When it comes back to the present and Jack is watching Ennis drive off, he has his mustache again.

Continuity: Enis is helping Jack start his truck after they get back from Brokeback Mt. As soon as the truck starts Enis slams the hood down, but it is not all the way closed. Enis then leans on the truck and he and Jack have a conversation. In the next scene you see Jack driving the truck away and the hood is completely closed.

Factual errors: The two teams playing football on TV during the Thanksgiving Day dinner are the NY Jets and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Only the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys have hosted Thanksgiving Day games for a good number of years.
