Title: Syncronised DVD watching
Post by: Edmund-Paul, The Baron of Ree on Oct 23, 2006, 02:55 PM
How about Brokeys getting together to watch BBM off DVD at pre-aranged times?

Phone each other before and after, web-cam or chat.

That would be so much nicer that being all alone.  ;D

We've done this before, a date needs to be decided (most likely a Sunday)  and this is the shedule we used:

11 AM Pacific
12 PM Mountains
1 PM Central
2 PM Eastern
7 PM UK
8 PM Western Europe
9 PM Central Europe

and so...

For me it would have to be late night, eastern time

Late night means?
Title: Re: Syncronised DVD watching

hmm, maybe I mean early morning. I guess after midnight. I don't like to watch with my family around and they are usually up late too.

This would mean very early morning in Europe but could accomodate members in Asia/Oceania zones.

I'm there - any time of day or night - if Oz and Oceania find their daytime easier, some of us Europeans can adapt.

Toadily and I watched while the brokies watched from Montreal, I then went to have breakfast...and got on with my day...

Saturday is a better night Europe-wise, since we then have the Sunday to catch up...Friday even...Sunday can be a bit tricky.

The best way to specify a time is to use Greenwich Mean Time. This is global time - it is the same everywhere.

Look at your computer clock setting or on the internet to covert for your local time to GMT, and quote that when making arrangenents for syncronised viewing.

I have a confession to make. I had a sneaky view solo the other day! But I can always watch again.

How about tomorrow at 18.00 GMT?

I'm not sure what time that is, I'm looking online and I can't figure it out.  I'll check the board tonight at 10:00 pm. est when I get home from work.

Hi Short Leash.

I was going to start viewing 15 min, but as we have not got our time zones worked out I'll put it off.

Tell me the nearest city where you live and I will work it out for you with pleasure. Then we can sync in comfort without stress in a day or two!

You're on Eastern Standard then, aren't you?  Five hours behind GMT, which is what I'm on - you can't be in Central time that far east, can you?
Title: Re: Syncronised DVD watching
Post by: Edmund-Paul, The Baron of Ree on Nov 07, 2006, 01:56 PM
This is a handy link. Click on the nearest city and on the following page you get GMT listed near the top. GMT is of course the same all over the world - great for Short Wave radio listeners and time travelers like ouselves.

http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/

So yes, ShortLeash, you are five hours behind GMT (Welshwitch/London) and six hour behind me (Saul/Amsterdam). The easy way to convert in your head to add 5 hours and then turn AM to PM.

So, should be make a date - the three of us?

Saul

Thanks for that handy timetable, I love it! So I'm off work tomorrow which means, I could stay up late to watch around 1 AM my time, but unless you are both early risers, that might not work for you. Or, I can watch tomorrow morning which would be mid day for both of you. If either of those times work for you, let me know. I will check when I get home from work. Which will late afternoon for each of you. Hey, I think I'm getting the hang of it. If none of these work, then let me know what works for you and I'll see if I can make it work.

Hi Koka - great. Then there are four of us!

How about 21.00 hours GMT next Saturday? That would mean 9.00 PM for WelshWitch, 10.00 PM for me in Amsterdam, and 3.00 PM for ShortLeash local time.

Kola - what time are you on? Its easy to work out if you use the world clock link from me a few postings back.

This time I am going to be looking for special effects! Most of the sheep are computer generated, but are the people in the firework scene real or angborgs?

No problemo for me except I wouldn't know an angborg if I saw one....

I've given up make-up - don't need it anymore since photoshop!

Its a pity Ennis and Jack are not angborgs - oherwise I would download them!  <^(

Anyway, the next viewing will be different as I will really be looking for the special effects.

I do like the idea of synchronised DVD watching - but I'm British, so the time zone is different. How many hours back is America? Eight? I always forget.
Title: Re: Syncronised DVD watching
Post by: welshwitch on Nov 15, 2006, 11:58 AM
Depends where you are in the US. there are 4 time-zones, Pacific ( 8 hours behind) Mountain ( 7), Central (6) and Eastern Standard( 5) - NYC and Washington are on EST.

It's a hysterical system - you can drive along a line dividing two zones and discover that some people on one side have opted for one zone and others nearby places haven't. We went through places where all the banks were closed than a mile or so further on they were open. All the TV progs start at eg 7/8 pm and if you're crafty you can eat a meal one side then go to the other and have another immedicately after -w e did this with breakfast.

We should have this in the UK - we used to, of courrse, in a way till Railway Time came in and we standardized  on GMT.

My impression is that for most people, the weekend is the best time to try this. For me, not so much. But I would certainly try to work around any schedule you came up with. I will keep an eye on the thread to see how it comes together. :)

Ah...I would say "so true", but I've never viewed BBM at the same time as someone else, so I can't. I'm sure it is nice, though.  :)

And although synchronised BBM watching is quite something, it is really something else to be watching BBM and talking on MSN to a friend, who is at the same time watching Pirates of the Caribbean, and both of us are periodically drooling over our respective Jacks, arguing over Pirate hats or Cowboy hats, and having exchanges of this ilk:

"Oh no, Ennis is turning him away.  Noooo...don't cry, Jack!" (Me)

"Ahh, poor Twisty McBrokegay.  Actually, I think Twisty McGayback sounds better." (My friend's response)

And:

"Oh God, Jack is doing his puppy-dog eyes.  I just want to step in and hug him!" (My friend)

"Pfft. Why? He hasn't gone through any emotional turmoil or anything; he just runs around falling over and sword-fighting with people." (Me)

"Well why should I be sorry for *your* Jack, then?"

"Because he is painfully in love with someone who can't pluck up the courage to be with him when he knows that's all they both want, so he has to live a lie and a sham marriage, when all the while his true love is out there without him, and the one time he thinks they can have a life together, he is rejected, and cries in his pickup, and completely loses hope."

"Hmph. Whatever. Jack Sparrow gets eaten by a sea monster."

~) Severely OT, I know, but I just felt like sharing that. Apparently BBM didn't affect her on quite the same level as it did me...plus she has a raging lust for Johnny Depp.  :P

Enjoy your BBM sync-view! In my experience its great if you phone each-other before and after (or use Skype /yahoo messenger etc). Its so much better than watching alone. Also its nice to watch with an aim - such as just watching Ennis whenever he is on screen - then the next time only Jack.

Best wishes, JFT

Yes I'm in the same time zone as New York. GMT +1 will put you in Audrey's time zone. When we sync up it's 3:00 P.M. my time, and 9:00 P.M. her time, so you can join us the next time.

That would be great. I work odd shift patterns, but generally 9 PM is the best time for me if I have a run of day shifts or days off.

Please let me know when you both plan the next one.

I said last year that I didn't intend to watch the Oscars again but would watch BBM  when they were on; I also said I'd write to the Academy to say what I was doing and why - I shall do both.

Given this year's nominations I don't think I'll be missing much, and if the awards are made as fiarly as last year's the whole over-hyped over-infalted event is a waste of time anyway.

I shall miss seeing the hideous get-ups the women appear in though.

I don't think aesthetics are of great concern to Hollywood - more how much glitz and how many yards of fabric can you cram into one dress. The occasional plain one is such a pleasant change.

i agree.. i just saw a dress that was supposed to have the value of several million dollars, because they used diamonds on it... and it was actually one of the most ugly dresses i ever saw. Didnt even fit good...

Rather spend a few more dollars on a fitting, and less on diamonds...

Its always a good idea to sync the exact start and end with phone calls. Even international calls are cheap these days.

I have decided not to as well. I just can't be up until 4 in the morning as I have PLMD and need my pills at about 11.  :(

March 24 2008 will be Oscar Night... Who cares?   ::)  ^o

What about a synchronized watch of BBM?  The Oscars are airing at 8pm Eastern Time, which is 3am U.K., 4am Western Europe... It could be late for many but if you're interested let us know. :)

Jay, sounds good! This happens to be the time of Easter celebrations, March 24 is the second day of Easter, Easter Monday, I think. This sounds odd and late  :s) - thinking out loud by myself -do you mean February 24?

Title: Syncronised DVD watching & Watching chain
Post by: Edmund-Paul, The Baron of Ree on Jan 18, 2008, 02:05 PM
Syncronised DVD watching is fun. But now I'd like to propose a watching chain.  ;D

It works like this. One person starts watching, towards the end of the film the next one starts. Got it? Watch and hand on. It is great accross time zones. It is even possible to have brokies watching BBM at every moment of world time the clock round, with as few as 12 people in the chain, as the film lasts about 2 hours! If all was organised well you could even watch it twice - at the beginning and end of the chain!

Sounds interesting. Let us know if you get one started. :)

If I can, I'll watch on the 24th. Last year I was in Bay City watching with Brokies. It would be wonderful to watch with you all again, even from my own home. ^f^

It might be best to do this before and after viewings when there are get togethers.

 :h) Dear brokies,

If you have a "Satellite broadcast", you can watch "Brokeback Mountain" on the chain "Cine Premier" at 20h45.

We ought to watch the movie in memory of Heath Ledger  :\'(

Hi fellow Brokies,

I'll be watchin' our movie Saturday Night, Feb. 16, 8pm eastern here in the USA.  I'll have:

whisky (I've already made my own label ... thanks to our fellow Brokeback Mountain crafty folk)... I put my favorite whisky (Wiser's Canadian) in the newly labled bottle

fresh box of kleenex

lit, white pilar candle, next to a framed postcard of Brokeback Mountain ... you know the one, up in Freemont, north a here.

another fresh box of kleenex

one-way ticket to Riverton ... oh wait ... damn.

... maybe some of you can watch at the same time ... where ever you are.

Title: BBM viewing party, ALL Brokies welcome
Post by: chameau on Dec 29, 2008, 03:16 PM
I copy here this kind invitation from Ellemeno (from the Bettermost forum)

Quote
Hi everyone,

Over at BetterMost, we're hosting a BBM watching party in our chat for all Brokies.  We're going to do it twice, to try to cover all time zones.  Both will be on Saturday, January 10th, first at 3pm ET/20:00UTC, and then again at 10pm ET/3:00UTC.

Here's some info on it, and a link to the BetterMost thread about it.  Could you post this invitation in the right areas here, maybe even put it on your main pages at a good time?

http://bettermost.net/forum/index.php/topic,31333.msg457875.html#msg457875

We had a great time when several ennisjack members came to our pre-BBQ 2007 chat, and would love to have you over again.  Note that to get into the BetterMost chat, you need to be a BetterMost member, but I think many Brokies already are members of the four main BBM forums, even if one of the forums is their main home.

Thanks for posting it Cham. but I think you had a little mix-up there, for the first viewing it's still January 10 for the UK and western Europe... for the second viewing it's already January 11 there.
For Taiwan and Australia the date is Jan 11 for both viewings.
