Hello hippiewannabe
-
i wonder if there leaving best supporting actor to late on due to all the speulation around weather heath will win...im confident myself he will.
-
I don't know much about the movies or the awards. I would like to see Dark Knight wins as many award as possible, and if not, for Milk to win the rest it was nominated.
I am glad Milk won the screenplay award because the young screen writer really is amazing.
-
Hi guys!
I would have given Art Direction to Revoutionary Road myself.
-
Curious Case of Benjamin Button got it.
-

Phew - I think this must be rough for those overseas, as they are, it looks like, going to drag out what we're waiting for. And everybody else. TDK didn't get the make-up award or the earlier art one, but, that's not a predictor. Hang in there, everybody.....
-
I was hoping for TDK too. :(
I did see Benjamine Button and I admit they did a great job of aging Brad Pitt
old and young.

the link doesn't work for me
Wait, it's takes a while to load ???
-
I love it! They had the dinner clip from MILK in the tribute to romantic movies!
-
I was holding my breath during the "Romance 2008" bit, wondering what they'd show from Milk. And I would have been appalled if they hadn't shown anything from it.

some recap so far
Host Hugh Jackman started the night off well with some charming jokes and an opening musical number that, although it referenced excrement and pubic hair, made us simply embarrassed for adorable Hugh Jackman. (And for those of you who were wondering... yes, Anne Hathaway did change her dress. Huh.) After an energetic (but in our humble opinion flat) musical number, Jackman perused the crowd calling out the front row celebrities.
The first presenter? Try five of them: Eva Marie Saint, Whoopi Goldberg, Goldie Hawn, Tilda Swinton and Angelica Houston. The female talent powerhouses honored each of the Best Supporting Actress nominees in bizarre testimonials in what can only be called a stilted waste of our time.
At least it settled one question... the leaked winner list is totally fake. It had Amy Adams list, but the Oscar went to Penelope Cruz. (Sorry, Amy.)
Next up Tina Fey and Steve Martin rocked their jokes and the screenplay awards. Best Adapted Screenplay went to Dustin Lance Black for "Milk" and Best Original Screenplay went to Simon Beaufoy for "Slumdog Millionaire."
The weirdness continues. Jennifer Aniston presents the award for Best Animated Feature with Jack Black. OK, first of all, why is Black, voice star of "Kung Fu Panda," one of the nominated films, presenting an award for his own category? Second off, why is Aniston (of Pitt-Jolie drama) presenting an award with Jolie's co-star from "Kung Fu Panda"? The only redeeming thing about their presentation? Wall-E won! But don't get too excited... they both remained onstage and butchered the names for the Short Animated Films. I'm not sure what Jack Black said when he announced the winner, but the Oscar went to La Maison en Petits Cubes.
Sarah Jessica Parker and Daniel Craig were next up to present the awards for Art Direction and Costume Design. (Ah, so this is how the show will be kept to time: 2-fers.) "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" took home its first Oscar of the evening (out of 13 nominations) for Art Direction. "The Duchess" won for Costume Design.

I know. Oscar is known for upsets. It ain't over until it's over.
-
Well it might but I have a feeling it's Slum Dog cause it's sort of the darling right now.
Most of the movies this year were kind of depressing so no surprise for some Cinderella movie to win all even if it's not the best. ::)
-
Cham, some of us loved Slumdog...
Sorry but I didn't :-\\
-
You know I did like Slum Dog and thought it was very well done but I have no desire to see it again.
And I suspect it's sort of not going to have longevity that way. Sort of like a Crash win, I mean who
repeats Crash and makes it a classic? While of course Brokeback is a classic. I mean I liked Slum Dog and didn't
really like Crash but I sort of put them in that catagory.

Heath's win is a fitting tribute and way overdue testament to his abilities as a true actor...one who not only portrays a character but becomes the character. It is that ability that will leave us an abbreviated, but endearingly memorable legacy.

Man on a Wire was wonderful by the way.

With this recognition, it isn't the end of the journey, but the beginning. From here, it's always film history, as well it should be, for generations to see, tagged correctly, as: The Best.
Good night all. Love you. It was worth the wait.
-
One of the presenters here just said he was really nervous before the announcement, praying that Heath would win.
I felt the same, totally.

Yeah Slumdog, Kate Winslet, not sure about actor or director.
-
Jeez, I wish they'd get on with the rest of the big awards. I really want to see if Kate Winslet and Slumdog win, but I'm struggling to keep my eyes open now...
-
For now I just want to know if Kate will make it or not for best actress, looks like it's her year.
-
I would say the best director goes to Danny Boyle
and I hope best actor goes to Sean Penn
Best actress goes to Kate
NoReins - sorry that you have to stay up late
-
This cowboy is fading fast. If I lay back I will be out for the count. Good night friends. It was wonderful sharing Heath's moment with each of you. I will sleep a happy man tonight.

Ditto that Keren. I am so happy that I have ben able to share this moment with you all. The pain of BBM not winning has never left me but now some of that has abated. Our Heath has won what he was so deserving of, and though the is not here, we are, to celebrate and remember what a remarkable actor he was.

One of our stupid presenters is going on about how Heath wouldn't have won if he'd still been alive. She said something about over-sentimentality >:( >:(
Fortunately, Danny Wallace (the writer of Yes Man) just pointed out that there was Oscar buzz about Heath's performance going all the way back to when TDK was being filmed. Just as well we've got someone sensible on the UK coverage.
I think I'm going to stay up till 4am but if best actress hasn't been given out by then, I'm going to hit the hay...
-
I was up late then I went straight to my computer and it is no surprising because I am 100% expecting Heath wins the Oscar.
-
it's almost 6 am in Israel, I'll probably pass out soon.
-
The show should be off in about 30 minutes, you stay with us, huh?
-
it's almost 6 am in Israel, I'll probably pass out soon.
Hope you are able to get some sleep, honey, although I know that that magic moment was well worth your lack of sleep, and all other Brokies who are in the wee hours.
I'm still a mess!!!

Actually, I'm going to call it a night now...
Thank you all for being around tonight - it's been a pleasure to share our boy's triumph with you. I only wish he could have been here, too :\'(
-
Yeah I think it is running a faster pace this time?
Sorry for those staying up late in Europe. I am probably going to be drunk by then. Too many toasts for Heath's win.
I just hate the word - posthumous.
Good night, NoReins. Thanks for being here.

Everybody here was really hoping that Waltz with Bashir would win, there's gonna be a big disappointment now. I've seen it and it's good, but to be honest I only care about Heath winning.

Good night Brokies, it was a great time to share with you.

How ironic that the same director and winner and the Oscar movie of this year is Slumdog Millionaire, that wasn't the case when Ang Lee was best director and Brokeback Mountain was shamed away for Crash.
how time have still pester the academy to be as hypocritical as ever.

‘Slumdog Millionaire’ Wins Eight Oscars, Including Best Picture
By MICHAEL CIEPLY and DAVID CARR
LOS ANGELES — “Slumdog Milllionare” swept the Academy Awards with eight prizes, including for best picture, capping an unlikely trajectory for a movie about a young man’s rise from the slums of Mumbai to television stardom.
Heath Ledger posthumously won the Oscar for best supporting actor for his role in “The Dark Night,” while Kate Winslet and Sean Penn took home best actress and best actor awards for their respective performances in “The Reader” and “Milk.”
And Penélope Cruz won for best supporting actress for her portrayal of the fiery ex-wife of an amorous artist in “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.”
“Has anybody ever fainted here?” Ms. Cruz said in accepting the award. She then dedicated the award to her parents, and told how as a child she watched the Oscars, calling her art “the world’s universal language.” And then in Spanish, she thanked the people of Spain, saying she shared the award with her homeland.
For Ms. Winslet, the award was her first Oscar. But the emotional highlight of the night was the award to Ledger, who died in his Manhattan apartment Jan. 22, 2008, from what was ruled an accidental drug overdose.
"I have to say this is ever so humbling, just being amongst such wonderful people in such a wonderful industry," said his father, Kim Ledger, who accepted the award on behalf of the actor’s three-year-old daughter, Matilda. "We’d like to thank the Academy for recognizing our son’s amazing work, Warner Bros., and Christopher Nolan in particular for allowing Heath the creative license to develop and explore this crazy Joker character.""Slumdog Millionaire," considered the favorite for best picture, won at least six other awards, including best director, best adapted screenplay, best original score and cinematography.
Overall, Sunday evening’s Oscar show was something of a struggle between the ambitions of a producing team — headed by the veteran film producer Laurence Mark and the filmmaker Bill Condon — that aimed for an evening full of surprises and the apparent determination of 5,810 voters in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to bestow honors largely where they were expected to go.
A much-discussed new format for the show found Hugh Jackman, the evening’s host, performing a comical tribute in song to the five best picture nominees as the event began at 5:30 p.m. in the Kodak Theater here. He then wandered into the audience to tease the nominees, telling Mickey Rourke that “If you win, we do a 20-minute delay.”
In a departure from past practice, the evening’s celebrity presenters were not identified in advance, partly in the hope that a larger-than-usual audience would tune in to see who actually showed up.
Tilda Swinton, for instance, handed out the award for best supporting actress, with Goldie Hawn, Sarah Jessica Parker and Whoopi Goldberg also making appearances. Ben Stiller appeared onstage brooding and donning a fake beard, a comical allusion to Joaquin Pheonix’s awkward appearance recently on “The Late Show With David Letterman.”
The Academy also paid homage to “Milk” in giving its best original screenplay award to Dustin Lance. And “Wall-E” was named best animated feature. “Departures,” from Japan, was the surprise winner in the best foreign language film category.
-
Goodnight all, has been so good with so many of us here. :cr)

Notable quotes from the 81st annual Academy Awards
Notable quotes from Sunday night's 81st annual Academy Awards in Los Angeles
The Associated Press
AP
Quotes from Sunday night's 81st annual Academy Awards at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles:
"You commie homo-loving sons of guns. I did not expect this, and I want it to be very clear that I do know how hard I make it to appreciate me, often, but I am touched by the appreciation." — Sean Penn, accepting the best actor Oscar for his role in "Milk."
"I'd be lying if I said I haven't made a version of this speech before. I think I was probably 8 years old and staring into the bathroom mirror, and this would have been a shampoo bottle. Well, it's not a shampoo bottle now." — Kate Winslet, holding the Oscar she won as best actress in "The Reader."
"My kids are too old to remember this now, but when they were much younger, I swore to them that if this miracle ever happened that I would recede into the character of Tigger from Winnie the Pooh." — Danny Boyle, jumping up and down, after winning the best director Academy Award for "Slumdog Millionaire."
"This award tonight would have humbly validated Heath's quiet determination to be truly accepted by you all here — his peers within an industry he so loved." — Heath Ledger's father, Kim Ledger, accepting the award for best supporting actor on behalf of his son.
"When I was 13 years old my beautiful mother and my father moved me from a conservative Mormon home in San Antonio, Texas, to California, and I heard the story of Harvey Milk and it gave me hope. It gave me the hope to live my life." — Dustin Black, accepting best original screenplay Oscar.
"It's not going to be 45 seconds, I can say that right now. Has anybody ever fainted here? Because I might be the first one." — Penelope Cruz, accepting the best supporting actress award.
"Fifteen career Oscar nominations. That's a record. I hate to say it but when someone puts up numbers like that, it's just hard not to think steroids." — Host Hugh Jackman to Meryl Streep during the opening of the show.
"There are certain places in the universe you never imagine standing. For me, it's the moon, the South Pole, the Miss World podium and here." — Simon Beaufoy on-stage after winning best adapted screenplay for "Slumdog Millionaire."
"Now listen, I want you to relax tonight. I want you to say whatever is on your mind because you know we have a seven-second delay, but if you win, we switch to a 20-minute delay." — Host Hugh Jackman to Mickey Rourke during the opening of the show.
"This award touches my heart and the very depth of my soul because of who the award is from and those who will benefit. The humility I feel is staggering, and I know it will stay with me for the rest of my life." — Jerry Lewis, while accepting an Oscar for humanitarian work.

Good morning, hpv! So you didn't stay up until 5:00 AM or whatever to watch? :)
I'm about to go to bed. It was one intense evening...
I'm disappointed, though, that we didn't see Jake! Reese was a presenter, though.
Well, have fun looking over the various results. Goodnight.

Wow, what an amazing image!!!!!
Thanx WA ^f^
-
It amazes me that a movie without any nomination in the acting categories can pull a win for best picture.
Well, yeah, but Slumdog Millionaire had three different actors playing each of the main character so it would have been harsh to give best actor accolades to any of them. The only one who could have got it would have been Dev Patel, but the younger kids were as big stars as he was...
-
I hoped for Milk to win :s)
-
Ooooh Heath baby, yes!!!!
-
Just caught up on the pages of chat from last night, wish I could have been here to share this amazing night with you all - so, so happy that Heath won &**) &**) &**) &**) &**) &**) &**) <^( <^( <^( <^(

CONGRATULATIONS HEATH ¡¡¡ AND THANK YOU FOR HAVING GIVEN SO MANY UNFORGETTABLE ROLES TO US¡¡¡ :^^) :ghug:

it would have been so good to be with you... but unfortunately work overweighed... :-\\
and then .. i was very emotional last night.
BBM was shown for the first time on austrian TV, and i had so many people call or text me to tell me they now understand what i was rambling about for all those years... and this got me very much... :-\\
i am happy for sean penn, i really am. ^f^
and heath... well... late, too late. but a tribute to all he has given to us... ^f^ :\'(
-
(((((Fausta))))) :ghug: :ghug:
-
Fausta,I understand you because I felt the same last week when I saw BBM on TV and I could see how many persons share,or at least understand too,my love for it.But I know how emotional you can be by having watched it in this night precisely; too many emotions as not to be happy and sad at the same time... :\'( Today I'm like in a cloud and I've cried all the tears in the world; so,if his serves you for anything,we're together in his feeling. :ghug: %)
-
thank you so much! :ghug:
-
:ghug: :ghug: :ghug:
