To be an actor is to touch the boundries where we are most afraid to go. To be an actor is to push beyond the zone of comfort and show what we least want to see. Heath Ledger was able to do that and to touch our hearts and souls. He made the deepest and in the end the greatest sacrifice. Thank you friend, thank you. May you play with the angels now and be at peace.

I am so incredibly sad and so completely shocked about this that I am at a loss of words. I keep thinking maybe it is not real. It is going to be so hard for me to watch BBM for a very long time. It brings another element of sadness into a movie that still bring sadness to me. Heath was incredible. He brought us Ennis.

When I heard the news
from the office jokester
that you died of drug overdose
I would not, could not believe it

I held back the urge
to google you
to find out for sure
Too afraid, to find the truth

Whatever the cause, your death
reminds me of someone else
not unlike the friend I miss so much
but also Marilyn Monroe, at the height of her career

Some may compare you to others, but to me
Marilyn and you are a pair of shining stars
breaking new ground where others see not
Being your own role model, when others see only the pretty face

She was smart as well as gorgeous
You have character and intelligence, as much as good looks
What ever the cause that took you from this earth
You can rest assured that your work, your legacy, will remain forever.

Candle in the Wind, it is just as appropriate for you, as it is for Marilyn:
[modified without permission]

Goodbye my good friend
Though I never knew you at all
You had the grace to hold yourself
While those around you crawled
They crawled out of the woodwork
And they whispered into your brain
They set you on the treadmill
And they made you change your game

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a candle in the wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rain set in
And I would have liked to have known you
But I was just a fan
Your candle burned out far too soon
Your legend will be told

Loneliness was tough
The toughest role you ever played
Hollywood created a superstar
And pain was the price you paid
Even when you died
Oh the press still hounded you
All the papers had to say
Was that Heath committed suicide

Goodbye my good friend
From the man who loved you from afar
Who sees you as something as more than sexual
More than just a movie star

With love....

Dear Friends

Let's not be sad.  Mr. Ledger gave life to a character who united so many of us.  Let's never forget that.  We are all more alive - in many ways - because we had a hero in whom to belive.

Tragic, definitely.  And sad, too.

The greatest sadness is that Mr. Ledger might not have known how profoundly he was loved and admired.

Perhaps this is OUR moment to let those whom we love KNOW how much they are loved.

No matter what, Ennis del Mar will never die ... and we have Mr. Heath Ledger to thank for that.

Light your candles, raise your glasses, and never forget.

Best ....

Rick I loved your poem about actors.  I have some poems I will probably post tomorrow.  I haven't felt this bad since my parents died and that was in 1992 (Dad) and 1996 (Mom)   I never thought I would get so attached to two fine actors like Heath and Jake and I just didn't realize the depth of love  had for Heath.  I admired him so much not only as an actor but as a person.   And it would have been an honor to have met him but alias that is not to be.

I feel bad for his family, my heart goes out to them and to his little girl matilda.   I know she was the apple of his eye.

Thank you trekfan, my statements were from the heart as one who has studied acting. He gave his all and in the end I think it consumed him, as it can. We may never know.

He Is Not Dead

I cannot say, and I will not say
That he is dead. He is just away.
With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand,
He has wandered into an unknown land
And left us dreaming how very fair
It needs must be, since he lingers there.
And you - oh, you, who the wildest yearn
For an old-time step, and the glad return,
Think of him faring on, as dear
In the love of There as the love of Here.
Think of him still as the same. I say,
He is not dead - he is just away.

And it seems to me you lived your life
Like a Candle in the Wind
Never knowing who to cling to
When the rains set in...
Your candle burned out long before
Your legend ever did

God Bless Ya Heath, Go in Peace.

Sadly, I'm reminded of the last scene as he stares out of the window across the windswept field, lonely, distant, and not knowing where to go...

CC, you have me in tears now...  I swear, I thought of this song immediately when I heard the news...

Somehow this Poem keeps coming back to me;

Funeral Blues

Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.

Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

W. H. Auden

OMG, tears running down my face...  But this is so beautiful.  Thank you, J.

Thank you FlwrChild. This explains why I am not in tears yet.

I feel very very sad, but in a way, I don't feel that Heath is dead. He is just away, doing another movie, another location shoot. He is the cowboy who rides into the sunset...

Now I understand, why some people said Elvis is still alive.

I can believe that Heath is still alive, in my heart, although I know that's not true, in my head. My tears believe my heart, not my head. I guess not having a television today is a good thing. I'd be a wreck. It's like the movie, I waited a year and a half before I dared to watch it. I don't know when this news will finally sink in.

Heath, you are loved, like this, always.

For anyone who didn't see it, "Nightline" on ABC led off the first 15 minutes on Heath's death.  There is mixed news.  One report, that he
had pneumonia, which may have been a factor.  But they also reported there had been rumors of drug use, and that his friends had said he had
been "distressed" in the last month or so, not himself.  There is a report that he had two prescriptions for anti-anxiety, near him, but no report
of alcohol or illegal drugs.
They described him as one of the best actors for many years, with a bright future, showed several movie clips, and ended with the scene
from BBM, where he says to Jack--"I guess I'll be seeing you around."
His step-father in  Australia described him as generous and decent and the best person on the face of the earth.  There was also a mention that
his clothing had gotten messy recently and that he had looked ragged and unkempt, but that this, they said could have been just from an artistic
nature.  Might also have been called for in the role he was playing.
Am unable to get past this, and deeply shaken, but am passing along the news for those who might not have seen it.

Thank you Tony. The family gave a beautiful statement. I hope the press will give them room to grieve.

I have also seen a lot of speculation in the press as to cause of death and personal issues he might have had. I wish they would refrain from such speculation and simply wait for the legitimate reports to come in. I'm glad that we have not seen any of that here and I know that we'll all be waiting respectfully for any reliable information as it comes in.

Thank you all for letting me be with you tonight as we process this most shocking and sad news. :ghug:

I haven't posted on this forum for many months, but BBM is and always will be in my heart, in part because Ennis reminds me so much of someone who also yearned for love, yet could not allow himself to have it...my brother.  The coroner called to tell me he was dead, a suicide from an overdose of pills, on January 22, 1999.  This is truly a terrible day.

RIP Heath, thank you so much.  You will live forever.

How immeasurably more sad for you, camom, January 22, your brother...

It's a condolence book.

Hey everyone, just thought I'd let you know that a Guest book has been set up at the San Francisco Chronicle's website for Heath.

I only watched BBM for the first time 2 months ago.  What a revelation the movie was, what a revelation Heath Ledger was.  I had BBM fever for like a month, had trouble sleeping for days.  I'm afraid to watch the end of the movie b/c it depresses the hell out of me.  I can only watch the beginning, to see the beauty.  How beautiful was Heath in that movie.  Like a teen, and I'm certainly not near that age anymore! I started seeking out all the movies this guy was in.  What a talent.  Monster's Ball, Brothers Grimm, even A Knight's Tale.  Seeing the previews for The Dark Knight, I was blown away by him and looked forward to watching although I really don't care for batman movies.

How shocking, it's like I barely "knew" this guy and now he's gone.  In interviews, he seemed so sweet, a bit shy.  How others described him, Jake Gyllenhal "Heath is sensitive" drew me to him even more.  To think of how many more great roles he had in him, what a waste.  Yet, I can't help but feel in his short life he accomplished more than well...I have.  To have helped create something as powerful and beautiful as BBM that has touched so many people...

So young, so beautiful, I don't think any actor's death has touched me so.  Just like BBM, Heath's death leaves me aching with what could have been.

Beautiful words, and how I feel, too...
