Post by: ethan on Jan 29, 2006, 01:16 AM
From oscarwatch.com

The SAG Awards are sometimes great indicators of who will go on to win the Oscar but this year, perhaps not. Many of the winners may not even end up being nominated for an Oscar. But there are some key races to pay attention to that may or may not indicate the winner.

Here are the nominees:

Actor:
Russell Crowe, Cinderella Man
Philip Seymour Hoffman, Capote
Heath Ledger, Brokeback Mountain
Joaquin Phoenix, Walk the Line
David Strathairn, Good Night, and Good Luck

Here is your biggest showdown of the night. 2005 was definitely another year for great male performances. Of these five, one will likely be dropped and replaced by another - I'm going to guess right now that Ralph Fiennes makes it in for The Constant Gardener. For this, we predict in the showdown between Heath, Joaquin and Philip that Hoffman will take the statue. Hoffman's Capote is a virtuoso performance, the kind that win awards. The more understated perfs don't win, generally speaking. What could change is if they really really love Brokeback Mountain and won't be able to restrain themselves from voting for Heath. But Hoffman is the one to beat. If Heath or someone else wins here they better have a great speech. If they can win over the audience at large they can win themselves an Oscar.

Actress:
Judi Dench, Mrs. Henderson Presents
Felicity Huffman, Transamerica
Charlize Theron, North Country
Reese Witherspoon, Walk the Line
Ziyi Zhang, Memoirs of a Geisha

Another showdown. Most likely, Ziyi, Charlize and perhaps Judi are out of the running, leaving big time popular actor's actor Felicity Huffman (in a showy role) up against pretty and legally blonde Reese Witherspoon (in a more subtle role but against type, and she really sings, and she's young). BUT if you add William H. Macy into the mix, Desperate Housewives, and Felicity's 60 Minutes get - it's hard to imagine she won't win. But Reese ought to be considered the frontrunner. We're gonna go with Felicity.

More predictions after the jump.

Comments are open for your own predictions - please no nasty commentary or you will be deleted. Thanks.

Supporting Actor:
Don Cheadle, Crash
George Clooney, Syriana
Matt Dillon, Crash
Paul Giamatti, Cinderella Man
Jake Gyllenhaal, Brokeback Mountain

Supporting Actor is one of the toughest calls of the night. But given George Clooney's weight gain, movie star likability, and all around breakout stardom, he has to take it. Paul Giamatti and Matt Dillon also have great shots here. If it were me, I'd be voting for Jake Gyllenhaal but we have to put our chips behind George. Just because they win the SAG doesn't mean they win the Oscar - in fact, it's more often they don't.

Supporting Actress:
Amy Adams, Junebug
Catherine Keener, Capote
Frances McDormand, North Country
Rachel Weisz, Constant Gardener
Michelle Williams, Brokeback

Again, another tough category to call - and it's anyone's guess. One thing we know for sure is that there is a good chance this category will look very different at the Oscars. But it's completely unpredictable at this point. We're going to continue to predict Rachel Weisz, however, as she gives the most powerful performance of the bunch -- Michelle Williams (if they're crazy for Brokeback), Amy Adams in a surprise upset (the two actresses tied for the Critics Choice awards).

Ensemble:
Brokeback Mountain
Capote
Crash
Good Night, and Good Luck
Hustle & Flow

This seems like a no-brainer and that Crash will take it home. BUT I'm changing my prediction at the last minute to Brokeback Mountain based on your comments! I agree that it seem unlikely it will go home empty handed. So, we'll go with Brokeback for the big win. But don't be surprised if it's Crash.

All of these predictions could be way off the mark - predicting the SAG ain't ever easy. They often pick unexpected winners, like Johnny Depp for Pirates.

SAG/Oscar Disconnect

Usually, the SAG winners somehow reflect Oscar nominations, in that if there are four non-Oscar-nominated actors and one that managed to snag the nod, that person will usually win the SAG. However, this year, SAG ballots will be turned in before the nominations are announced, making the SAG and Oscar rather unrelated. What happens at the SAG could influence who wins the Oscars, especially if there is lots of love flooding the room for someone, a standing ovation perhaps? Can Philip Seymour Hoffman get a standing ovation from that room full of actors? Or will they be so blown away by Brokeback Mountain it will be Heath Ledger who will win? Either way, we feel certain Crash will win the Ensemble pirze. More on the SAGs as we get closer to the ceremony.

are you up all night?

It's hard to predict who will win, i mean if you voted what would you vote for? I mean besides our favs obviously.
But in general all of life involves taste.  so who is best?  sometimes its obvious but it might not be to everyone here who
isn't as obsessed as we are.

I need to confess that I have not seen any of them in other movies. I can't compare objectively. From what I have read, I didn't lose much either.  ;D

They have to win ..they must win. If they don't, I would still give them my heart.

I saw almost all of them myself.

In Ennis "it aint gonna be that way" depressing style, I think we might get disappointed except with Jake.
Philip Seymore is an actors actor, beein the biz awhile etc   I think a SAG group will vote for him,

I think Jake will win however.

I am so looking forward to hearing the results of the SAG awards and I hope, I hope, I REALLY hope,  that the Screen Actors Guild give Jake Gyllenhaal the recognition he deserves for his portrayal of Jack. Heath Ledger was staggering to be sure but you have to have good supporting actors in order to create such a fine performance and besides, Jake had to look comfortable with the realities of the situation when he really was blazing new territory for himself just as much as Heath was. It has really annoyed me that everyone recognizes the quality of Mr. Ledger's "Ennis" but seem to not get that Jake had to be just as good for that to happen. And ditto for Michelle Williams.

BTW,  not to digress from discussing "Brokeback Mountain," the film we adore above all others,  but Jake had some utterly mythic moments in "Jarhead" if you have not seen that yet. It is still showing in some theaters I guess and comes out in video March 7th. Really good stuff. Sometimes I think we should recognize actors for what they've done for the whole year. This guys both reallly went the distance in 2005.

By DAVID GERMAIN,

LOS ANGELES - The cowboy love story "Brokeback Mountain" continued its drive toward a clean sweep of major Hollywood honors as it entered Sunday's Screen Actors Guild Awards as the clear favorite.

"Brokeback Mountain" led the guild's film contenders with four nominations: lead actor for Heath Ledger, supporting honors for
Michelle Williams and Jake Gyllenhaal, and overall cast performance.

The film looked like an odds-on front-runner for the cast prize, the guild's equivalent of a best-picture award. The other nominees for cast performance were the film biographies "Capote" and "Good Night, and Good Luck," the ensemble drama "Crash" and the rap music tale "Hustle & Flow."

Ledger, Williams and Gyllenhaal faced strong competition for the individual acting prizes. Philip Seymour Hoffman as author Truman Capote in "Capote" beat Ledger for the dramatic-actor prize at the Golden Globes and was considered a favorite for both the guild honor and the best actor Academy Award.

Williams lost out for supporting actress at the Golden Globes to Rachel Weisz in the murder thriller "The Constant Gardener," while Gyllenhaal faced supporting-actor Globe winner George Clooney for the oil-industry saga "Syriana."

Felicity Huffman, the Globe winner for dramatic actress for the transsexual comic drama "Transamerica," was a safe bet to take the same honor at the guild awards.

Huffman, an Emmy winner last year for "Desperate Housewives," has the inside track on the best-actress Oscar for "Transamerica." She also had a guild nomination for best actress in a TV comedy series for "Desperate Housewives."

"Brokeback Mountain" led the Jan. 16 Globes with four wins, among them best dramatic film and director for Ang Lee, who took the same prize Saturday from the Directors Guild of America.

Adapted from Annie Proulx's short story about old sheepherding buddies who conceal a homosexual affair from their families, "Brokeback Mountain" also has earned top honors from key critics groups and the Producers Guild of America.

The film is positioned to become the first explicitly gay-themed movie to win best picture at the Oscars, whose nominations come out Tuesday, with the awards presented March 5.

The SAG awards are one of the last major film honors before the Oscars and have a solid record of forecasting Oscar winners. All four guild acting recipients for 2004 —
Jamie Foxx for "Ray,"
Hilary Swank and
Morgan Freeman for "Million Dollar Baby" and
Cate Blanchett for "The Aviator" — went on to win Oscars.

The 12th annual SAG awards also were honoring former child star Shirley Temple Black for life achievement.

Guild nominees were chosen by 4,200 randomly selected union members. The union's full membership of more than 100,000 was eligible to vote for winners.

Ethan, you are soooooooooo out of control....the cowboy attire will need to be a little toned down for this evening...not sure that California would really go for that...perhaps some black ropers and a turquoise bolo tie will be gentle enough...

Shirley Temple Black will receive an honorary award tonight

(https://ennisjack.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ftheenvelope.latimes.com%2Fmedia%2Fphoto%2F2006-01%2F21639113.jpg&hash=294df4e3bd01e8f13461ca715eb3f9d3f6151286)

By Susan King , Times Staff Writer
January 27, 2006
When Shirley Temple Black walks onto the stage of the Shrine Exposition Hall on Sunday evening to receive the 42nd Screen Actors Guild lifetime achievement award for her movie career and humanitarian efforts, most of her young fans will probably be shocked to see she's a 77-year-old grandmother.

Because of television, video and now DVD, a whole new fan base of children around the world is enjoying her musicals from the 1930s — and they're sending her bushels of fan mail, just as they did 70 years ago when the films were first released.

"My son takes care of [the e-mail] because I am not very good with computers," said Black by phone from her home in Woodside, in the San Francisco Bay Area. "I think a lot of them think I am about 6."

Every Halloween, she dons a witch's hat, wears a long, black dress and cackles loudly when she hands out candy to the trick-or-treaters. "They don't get scared," said Black. "But when I opened the door [last Halloween], one little girl said, 'Who are you?' And her mother said, 'That's Shirley Temple.' The little girl said, 'I didn't know you would be so old.' That kind of puts you in your place — which is fine."

Black was the youngest actress to receive a juvenile Oscar and the youngest to put her handprints in the cement at Grauman's Chinese Theatre.

The Santa Monica native began dancing at age 3, when her parents enrolled her at Ethel Meglin's Dance Studio in Los Angeles, and she was discovered there by director Charles Lamont. At the ripe old age of 4, she made her debut in the short "What's to Do?" and headlined a series called "Baby Burlesks," in which she parodied the likes of Marlene Dietrich and Greta Garbo.

But her career really kicked into gear when she signed with Fox — she made 10 movies in 1934 alone.

Black sang and danced her way to stardom in such films as "Bright Eyes" (in which she introduced "On the Good Ship Lollipop"), "Poor Little Rich Girl" and "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm."

From 1935 to 1938, she was even Hollywood's box office champ.

But Black, whose husband of 55 years, Charles, died last August, doesn't want to answer questions about her movies.

"All of these answers are carefully written out in the book," her autobiography "Child Star," she said politely but firmly. "It took me seven or eight years to finish."

She retired from films in 1949 but briefly returned to Hollywood in the late '50s and early '60s to do the anthology series "Shirley Temple's Storybook" and "The Shirley Temple Show."

Politics occupied much of her adult life. She ran an unsuccessful campaign for Congress in 1967 and was appointed U.S. delegate to the U.N. by President Richard Nixon in 1969. She held ambassadorships through the 1980s.

Having recently completed the second volume of her memoirs, covering her life since 1968, she warms up to talking about that period. She became interested in politics, she says, because she got to meet politicians and dignitaries, who visited her on the set.

She was in Prague, Czechoslovakia, in 1968, on a volunteer mission to invite the government to join a multiple sclerosis organization she'd co-founded, when Warsaw Pact tanks entered the city.

She doesn't remember being frightened. "I am very stoic," she said. "I go through things very well. I drove a car [out of Prague] with lots of people in it and we had to go through soldiers with weapons drawn stopping us and checking us out. Then we would go on another few miles."

In her career as a diplomat, "the U.N. was the biggest test," she said. "I didn't know that everybody was wondering how I would be. If I had, I might have been uneasy." But she did her homework. "I read lots of books and studied a lot and got ready. At the U.N., I would take books back to my hotel and read until 2 in the morning and then get up at 7 and go back to work."

But it was her old movies, she said, that really helped her gain acceptance into the United Nations.

"One of the reasons why it was fairly easy was because all of the countries felt they knew me already because they had seen me on the screen so long. As I said, little Shirley helped open doors, and if I didn't perform the job I was given, the doors would have closed."

A little background about SAG

What: 12th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards

When: Jan. 29, 2006

Where: Shrine Exposition Center, Los Angeles

Broadcast: TNT and TBS, 8 p.m. EST/PST

Who decides? The SAG Awards are determined by a vote of dues-paying members of the Screen Actors Guild.

What's the procedure? Two randomly selected panels of 2,100 Guild members nationwide choose the nominees. Once the nominations are made, all SAG members vote on 13 acting categories.

Backstory: The SAG Awards bowed in 1995 to celebrate the collaborative art of acting. Awards are presented in 13 categories to honor individual actors and actresses in movies, TV comedy, TV drama and made-for-TV movies, as well as ensemble casts in both big-screen and small-screen productions.

The hardware: SAG's "The Actor" trophy is a sculpture of a bare-chested thespian holding the Janus masks of comedy and tragedy.

I *totally* agree....why in the world did he feel the need to do that? Nerves? To me that was very disrespectful. Especially to the fans. The movie is not a joke to me.

Another annoying thing is that three of the nominees were IMITATING actual people......NOT bringing a character to life. Those three ALL had the benefit of watching hours and hours of video of the people they imitated....so how is that such a great acting feat...compared to bringing life to a character?

I do like PSH, and DS, and JP......but come on!

I thought the EXACT same thing and thought that was odd.  I can't believe how profoundly effected I have been by this film.  I have never watched an awards show and been so sad for a film not winning.

The idea with the SAG picture presentations is that the person who is the "heart" of the film introduces it. So I guess they thought both Jake and Heath were BOTH the heart of the film. After their performance I think that maybe they would have been better off having the sheep do the intro.

Still a weird concept in my mind....if ANYONE connected with the nominated picture should be doing the introduction of ensemble cast then it should be the director! NOT any of the actors IN the ensemble. Weird weird...and I thought that for every film.

Hugely disappointing!  While I feel certain that BBM will garner plenty of Oscar nominations, this puts a whole different light on who will likely win...It surprised me to see Reese beat out Fellicity Huffman...Give me a freakin' break with the Paul Giamatti win, made absolutely NO sense as I even saw Cinderella Man and he did NOT come close to the Gyllenhaal performance...the Capote dude continues to ride a tidal wave of momentum that will carry him into the Oscars...I never had CRASH winning for Best Picture...If that gets the nod for Best Picture at the Oscars, this could be a show-stopper for BBM.  I certainly hope that the SAGs are not a precursor of Oscar night....

Please don't say THEY...it was Heath...to me Jake looked serously annoyed with Heath. And I llike Heath so this not biased.
Jack in Maine

I will watch it again, but right now I have to disagree.  It looked like both of them were cutting it up together.

Naw...Jake had nervous confusion at Heath's behaviour, especially as it kept up. Incidentally, I DO NOT think Heath's hand on hip was an intentional fag imitation. I think that part was his own nervous energy. But I've been wrong before!
Jack in Maine

No, my friend...he was attempting to "fem" his delivery up.   It was a jab at effeminate guys......that's why Jake was taken off guard.  Heath needs to go to political correctness school

Well said that the actors are NOT the characters.
I was just browsing a forum of Jake fans and apparently had so much fan watching he and Heath introducing the movie ("hilarious- best part of the entire show").
Weird how perspectives and perceptions can be so different.

Heath just isn't into to the whole PR thing. Period. It doesn't matter what the interview is he just always looks a little awkward and slightly annoyed. I thought it was a really stupid format to have the actors from the film introducing their own performances especially when they have to read that incredibly stiled copy. That is what he was problem goofing about. And the leaning over...well... he  wasn't the only one having problems reading the teleprompter. The guy doesn't like bright lights.  You think he chooses to wear those dorky shades during all those premieres and press junkets 'cause it looks cool.  Wrong!  It's cause the freaking lights are bright!

Jake is a Hollywood baby and he knew how to be more polished and how to play the B.S. game from birth. Heath just couldn't give a crud!  And for that I think he is just the coolest!!

Maybe, but I doubt it. When he was on Leno on Jan 17 and when also, but less so on Oprah Friday, he was very fidgity and and he crossed and uncrossed his arms  and legs many times. I think he has a high leverl of nervous energy. Which unfortunately spilled over into his presentation dialogue and instead of gaining control of it, he totally misread Jake and tried to go with jokiness.

Living proff that Actors should not introduce themselves!

I think that they are probably just both sick of the whole thing. The movie was supposed to be an art house film--it was not supposed to ride the wave like this so to speak. Still, I would think that there would be some respect for the film even though they are tired of it.  This is show-biz, guys....get with the program. That being said, I think Heath was the instigator for the entire debaucle. Jake had to do something...and maybe laughing was the only way to handle it.

It surprises me that people on other boards are saying it was the best part of the show.  I assume that people on the "Jake" board are younger girls and probably just giddy that they even got to see him at all.

Well maybe not THE coolest......he did flub it up. But I agree with your take on the whole thing. Stupid stupid stupid to have the actors introduce themselves and ensemble. The leaning over and the hand on hip were both no act but nervous energy, concentrating on trying to read......as you say, very florid scripted words, and still speaking into the shared microphone. Too bad. But WAY surprising that the film won NONE of the awards it was nominated for. Sad. I'm dissappointed big time....can you imagine how they fell? Michelle? Jake? and Heath........and Anne and the rest of cast. Initially I thought it was a good sign that Randy Quaid actually started the show, and that BBM table was right there in front. Maybe someone else thought as we do and was as surprised at the results.

Good night all,

But on the other hand you'll never go broke underestimating the intelligence of the SAG.

It's too bad that this movie didn't get any SAG awards, methinks that there will never be another film like this EVER.

You know I hadn't really thought of it that way. And that old crotchity Academy dudes will think about the "young whippersnapper Ledger and how he was disrespectful at the SAG's".  Unfortunately, that plays as much a role as does an actors performance. Witness PSH's winning GG and SAG. He was good, really good, but Ledger was able to communcate something with a wholly imagined character. PSH is essentially being lauded for his transformation from a hulking wrestler-type to a small, mincing fag which he did an unbelievably good job at. It is just that Heath embodies what Ennis Del Mar was written as and then took it to an other level. That to my very prejudiced mind deserves every award regardless of the actors behavior on some 4th rate awards show.

11 Oscar nominations..these guys are just children really...they do not know how to handle this attention! They'll learn.
And yes, many Hollywood actors get married, divorced, impregnated, rehabbed and reborn when their films come out or during award season...
but did you see how Heath and Michelle held hands during Oprah?

WHICH HE DID on the Oprah show when she broached the subject and he said he found it odd that some people go out of their way to condemn how two people love and express their love. Got applause and agreement from Oprah.

Tonight he was nervous and it got out of hand. He did have all evening to anticipate and he probably got more nervous...and disappointed by his loss and Michelle's loss....so he lost perspective on the whole thing.

Please take what we have learned from the movie. The movie has affected us to the point of *hightened* expectation. Yes to us BBM has impacted us like no others. To these actors, they were set out to deliver their performances and got their jobs done.

Whatever Jake and Heath or others all have to face the consequences for their actions - just like Ennis. I sincerely hope that for something like tonight should and will not affect how you feel about this movie.

Heath and Ennis are not the same person. This is something we need to be clear.

Ethan, Thanks for that post.

This would be an interesting topic to explore: what is the impact going to be for these young actors after this film? If Heath Ledger the person is being taken to task for two minutes of behavior on an awards show what happens when he and Jake inevitably get on with their acting careers.  Are they ever going to as good as they were in BBM? Are all there performances going to be judged by this standard? Will we, the movies supporters, be supporters of them as actors?  All interesting questions - maybe. Maybe not.

You are welcome, Bruce. There is no doubt that because of BBM, many will become Heath or Jake's fans because of their performance. No one knows and only time will tell. These young actors take a role which they may not even realize its impact on many of us here. I simply feel that it is a bit harsh on them for their introduction of BBM.

It may be the telepromter's problem and I also think the lines they were given to read were really awkward. I just hope we could put an objective light on this as we all did for BBM. They deserve to win because of their performances we like - not because of their personality or PR.

I'm sorry that this was a real shut-out.  Most of all I had hoped for the emsemble award.

The thing that astonishes me about Heath's performance, is his age.  There is no reason to think that a "kid" only 27 years old, should have had enough life experience to be able to connect with the subtle complexities of Ennis... but he does... with simplicity... with understatement... with passion.  I know that we're going to see may more fine performances from Heath, but I can't imagine another vehicle that will give him the challenges and opportunities for success that Brokeback has.

I just watched the tape again and got me thinking if they had any rehearsal?

The intro for BBM sounded like it was written by some third rate romance novelist on some bad drugs.  Still, if I'd been Heath, I think I would have tried to maintain my composure a little bit better. Heath did look embarass that he had to read it.  And yes, he should've tried to maintain his composure. I could understand why some of you are disappointed on their behaviors.

You know, honestly, I think Heath was really being awkward, shy, uncomfortable, etc.  It may not be the first time they've spoken in public, but it may be the first time a really bright spotlight shown so closely on them.  That awkward hand gesture HAD to be one of Heath's many weird quirks (why would ANYBODY do that deliberately?)  I think it made Jake crack up, and they ended up having a ridiculous fit of the giggles.  I wouldn't take it more seriously than that.

I will agree by the time the Oscars get here, they had BETTER grow up, but lets hope the producer of the show is smart enough NOT to select Heath as a presenter. If I saw someone so uncomfortable being on stage before a live audience (and millions of TV viewers) I'd spare him the embarassment and let him sit (un)comfortably in his seat for the duration of the show.

They should be proud of what they have done and not shy away from what this movie is about. Age does bring experiences and they will learn like we all do.

Just my two cents. To me, they and we are all winners and I hope to see many of you at the Oscar.

Wow. SAG just started in my area, and I'm shocked by such disappointing results. Calise de crisse de tabarnacle! Thanks for the heads-up - at least I won't have a coronary from surprise. I'll be watching Heath and Jake carefully. It was my understanding that the SAG awards were a pretty accurate indicator of the Academy Awards. If that's the case, things don't look good for our boys. Sad.

Yes I am going to sleep too. Thanks for being with us tonight. It is disappointing but just wait for Tuesday Oscar nominations. I got 10 statuettes on the banner and I hope I will be adding more.

Good night everyone. It has been a great day here in the forum.

Their BBM intro was rather cheesy---most of them were simply awful! Who writes that crap?  Also, were other films introduced by a couple?..I think that was a SAG stunt to get the boys together on camera....Tues...8:30am....

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - ABC's hit series "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives" won top acting honors for television at the
Screen Actors Guild awards on Sunday as gay cowboy romance "Brokeback Mountain" hoped to lasso yet another major film award on the trail to the March 5 Oscars.

The "Lost" cast won the best ensemble performance award for a dramatic television series while "Desperate Housewives" received the ensemble award for best comedy series.

Paul Giamatti won the best supporting actor award for his role as manager Joe Gould in the boxing film "Cinderella Man," about the life of Depression-era boxer James J. Braddock.

British actress Rachel Weisz won best supporting actress for her role as the doomed activist wife of a British diplomat in "The Constant Gardener," a film based on a thriller by spy novelist John Le Carre.

It was the first nomination and win for "Lost," a castaway thriller that has helped reinvigorate ABC's prime-time schedule.

Felicity Huffman was named best actress in a comedy series for her work as one of the "Desperate Housewives." She is also a contender for best actress for her work in the film "Transamerica," in which she plays a man on the verge of completing a sex change operation.

Sandra Oh was named best actress in a television drama for her work as a fledgling doctor in "Grey's Anatomy" on ABC while
Kiefer Sutherland was named best actor in a dramatic series for his work as a U.S. agent out to foil terrorist plots in "24" on Fox.

Breathless and in tears, Oh, who also won a Golden Globe for her role, thanked her fellow Asian American actors. She said, "I share this with you ... be encouraged and keep shining."

Backstage, Oh said it was important that three actors of Korean descent had been honored by SAG. The other two were ensemble members of "Lost," Daniel Dae Kim and Yunjin Kim. She added: "That's quite an advance and I am proud to be part of it."

Sean Hayes, named best actor for his role in the gay-themed NBC comedy "Will & Grace," joked about the anticipation building around Ang Lee's "Brokeback Mountain" as he accepted his award.

"First of all, I would like to thank Ang Lee for taking a chance on me," he said. "I know everyone in Hollywood knows it's such a risk to play a gay character."

"Brokeback" has won major craft guild awards from Hollywood producers and directors and a victory at SAG for best ensemble cast -- the top award given by actors -- could make it virtually unbeatable at the
Academy Awards.

BUZZ FOR 'BROKEBACK'

Directed by Taiwan-born Lee, the film has won critical awards and picked up four Golden Globes. It goes into SAG, whose actor-members constitute the largest voting group for the Oscars, with four nominations.

But not everyone is comfortable with the film, whose theme is a forbidden romance between two cowboys.

President George W. Bush ducked a question last week on whether he planned to see the film, and no movie whose theme is a gay romance has won a best-picture Oscar, the symbol of mainstream success.

In a Hollywood awards-show tradition, actors ambled up the red carpet, often steered by publicists, stopping to pose for the battery of assembled photographers and to answer questions from the celebrity press.

Sutherland drew screams from fans when he cut through a velvet rope to sign autographs.

Jake Gyllenhaal, a critical favorite for his turn in "Brokeback," offered an apologetic wave to fans as he was led into the auditorium to prepare to present one of the awards.

Up against "Brokeback" in the ensemble cast category are "Capote," about the moral crisis Truman Capote faced in writing "In Cold Blood," "Crash," a racial drama set in Los Angeles, "Hustle and Flow," about a pimp's dream of stardom, and "Good night, and Good Luck," about Edward R. Murrow's fight against Sen. Joe McCarthy.

Besides the ensemble award for the "Brokeback" cast, Heath Ledger is up for best actor, Jake Gyllenhaal for best supporting actor and Michelle Williams for best supporting actress.

Ledger competes against Russell Crowe for "Cinderella Man," David Strathairn for "Good Night, and Good Luck," Joaquin Phoenix for "Walk the Line" and Oscar favorite Philip Seymour Hoffman for "Capote."

Competing in the best actress category are Huffman for "Transamerica," Reese Witherspoon for "Walk the Line," Judi Dench for "Mrs. Henderson Presents," Charlize Theron for "North Country" and Ziyi Zhang for "Memoirs of a Geisha."

They deserve to win because of their performances we like - not because of their personality or PR.

what was AWKWARD was the fact that when they were talking about the cowboys they were talking about their characters and themselves in those scripted words and they probably thought it was really a stupid thing to have to do.  that hand on hip thing was too weird...betcha he was a little tipsy.  probably booze, little sleep and frustration at always losing to capote dude.  and then they have to go up their and say this screwey stuff about themselves.  i forgive them.  i think jake was ready to do it straight but then heath started screwing with it/i was so nervous all night it was like i was up for award....oh their acting needs to be recognized.   i betcha paul newman had to wair forever to get awards-as well as redford.
heath needs to learn how to deep breathe.  he is a brandoish type-doesn't want to be there.  when he gets big enough and famous and respected enough he won't have to be.

this can't hurt their oscar chances all the ballots had to be turned in by january 21st--so it is already a done deal whatever the outcome.

Okay, I just watched Heath and Jake do their routine, and Heath seemed to be the clear instigator by starting to laugh as they walked on stage. That business with Heath putting his hand on his hip was just weird. I couldn't tell if he was trying to get some hidden message across, or if he was suffering from acute PBS. I think it would have been less offensive if he had bent over and started retching! He did seem to be squinting as he was trying to read the teleprompter, so maybe the bright lights actually were hurting his eyes. Jake seemed to be trying to make the best  of an awkward situation. What a disappointment. I can't believe that BBM didn't get a single award. I guess all we can do now is hope for the best at the Oscars. Sigh.

I watched it again in repeat and if you notice, when they are introduced and coming onto the stage, Heath is heading off toward the opposite side of the stage, but Jake indicates their microphone is on this side of the stage and so Heath does a kind of halting abrupt somewhat exaggerated turn and they appear to cross each other's paths, and then do that once again to stand at the microphone. So right away there was a bit of confusion which could put a nervous guy off balance. Then when they stand at the microphone, Heath jams his right hand into his coat or pants pocket and starts to do that with his left hand too, but then pulls back and that's when his hand landed on his hip. I'm convinced that action was unconscious and just nervousness and absolutely NOT any sort of fag/fem imitation.

Just two nervous guys, having to read overwrought lines about THEIR OWN characters.....again I say....SAG organizers were stupid to have the actors introduce their own ensemble movie. Stupid. I felt that about EVERY film that was introduced. If fact it was so stupid I thought sure there had been a mix-up when the first film was introduced by one of it's stars.

Great analysis, Jack! The more I think about it, the more I agree with your assessment. Our boys were just nervous, and they lacked the aplomb to recover from their initial confusion and from having to read those terrible lines. That kind of grace under fire only comes with experience, so I can't fault Jake and Heath for that. In time, I'm sure both of them will develop the urbanity to weather such a poorly organized show with more poise.

Well, Oscar nominations is less than two days. Cross your fingers, everyone!

I couldn't saw SAG show from here Italy.. reading your posts is seems that the was a true defeat for BBM... :-[
I don't know what's importance and meant of different awards (Venice Gold lion, Oscar, SAG....).. but I found very strange that could be a so different evaluation between different awards.. how can change like this the evaluation of a film or an actor? Could you explain it to me? Is there any political choice?
You give a lot of importance to the way that Heath and Jack attended the show.. is it so fundamental? What they was judging was the film, actors performances or what?

let me know

Insite into Golden Globes Awards:

I googled PIA ZADORA and Golden Globe Award (don't know how to thread(?) to this forum.  Anyways the GGA have been in the past rife with scandal.  The Oscars are voted on by all the members of the Academy of etc etc etc.  NOW, not ALL of them see all the pictures that they are casting theri votes for (another Hollywood dirty little secret) thus the reason for all the Oscar ads from the producers etc.  The Academy does not want the GG to tell them what to vote for so sometimes what gets a GGA does not always get an Oscar.  As far as SAG is concerned I don't have enough info to have an informed opinion about the voting pattern/bias of SAG.

Yeah GGAs are given by a small group (about 85) of Hollywood foreign press writers while SAG is a huge organization of screen actors.   Some SAG members also belong to the other guilds because they are also produccers, directors, writers etc.

SAG awards, as was mentioned during the telecast, are young awards they started in 1994.  I think they looked around and thought all the other guilds (producers, directors, writers etc) give out awards and we need to do it.  The other guilds are smaller but have a long history.

Since they are giving awards to their peers it appears in general that they go for older more experienced actors - reward your buddies.  "Crash" was on some SAG prediction lists because it has an ensemble of "74" actors (mentioned during awards) and many well established actors were part of the ensemble.  On the other hand,  the BBM cast is composed of young actors with the exception of Randy Quaid.  It's just depressing that BBM got so many SAG nominations and walked away with nothing.

As a predictor of Oscars it looks like the BBM cast could get nominated in the acting categories but not win any of the acting awards.  Even an Oscar nomination though is an honor and is a career enhancer.  And a "nomination" is used like a "win" in maketing credits - "Academy Award Nominee...".

At 5:30 am (Pacific Standard Time) the AMPAS (Oscar) nominations will be announced in Hollywood and the marketing machines for all of the studios kick into high gear.

By the way, did anyone notice that there was a commercial for BBM during the SAG awards last night ?  I live on the West Coast so it might have only run in this market.

I don't think the SAG will affect BBM in terms of Best Picture , Director, Adapted Screenplay or Cinematography...I read today that Heath won a Cinefile Society Best Actor Award.  But I expect many BBM Oscar nominations...that will be great for all the fans...

Many thanks, Ethan...

I saw postings that showed many members were upset by Heath's behaviour; however, like you said I hope it was just a hiccup on their part... and I do agree that Heath is very "volatile" and was probably very nervous...

I am just praying that they realize their impact...

Again thanks!

Peace,
Frank

OK, I'd like to revisit the presentation of BBM at the SAGS in the clear light of day.

I think that when BBM was created, everybody concerned thought that what they were making was a modest indy film based upon a wonderful piece of writing.  NOBODY expected that it would evolve into the entertainment and sociological phenomenon that it has become.  We now have a situation where some very young (albeit wonderfully talented) actors find themselves in the position of having to be spokespersons for something that is no longer a movie, but a force - and they have to do it again, and again, and again in all kinds of situations where the harsh light of public scrutiny is shined right on them.  That is a LOT to pile on the shoulders of people who lack the life experience to be asked to consistently uphold high standards for this enormous responsibility.

I'm going to dismiss the presentation of BBM at the SAGS as an anomaly. and I hope that you will, too.  Heath Ledger clearly is very uncomfortable under the spotlight, and that can be an agonizing thing to have to endure.  He deserves our sympathy and support - he's an actor and a human being, not some paragon of perfection.  There are people who function on a very high level in work or social situations that are highly structured, but they painfully crumble and retreat inwardly when the public expectation is more of a "free-fall" type of thing.  Heath may very well be one of them.  IF that is true, I would hope that those involved with BBM will get him a PR consultant and/or mental health specialist to HELP this man.

Let's keep our eyes on the ball.  Despite any human failings or quirks (and who doesn't have them?), Heath gave us the wonderful gift of one of the great performances in movie history.  That will remain true regardless of the outcome of ANY awards ceremony.

Damn, I'd REALLY like to see him shine luminously at the Academy Awards!  I think that for Heath the man, that would be the biggest victory of all.

JerBear

P.S.  I know that many forum members are very young people.  I apologize if any of this sounded patronizing to you.  Yeah, some of us get older and acquire a degree of wisdom, but some of us just get OLDER - LOL!

JAke said that, I sort of don't believe it but I do also know what he means.  They approached it like it would be an art house movie with a small following.  It's sort of like if you wrote poetry for your town and it became a hit, you would be pleased but also like "Wow I wrote that for a few people" and you feel exposed a bit.

I don't think that their introduction will have any effect on their carreers as such.
BUT First they should fire the writers that wrote that script---it was awful----no wonder Heath and jake were having problems getting through it!!  Going on about sheepherding, and the language was NOT something any of the cast or crew would have said any time---it was really lame.   They should have let H/J just talk about the film the way they have been over all the interviews---what ever happened to just descibing--like "force of nature"  tragic and lots of other key words that were not used for this intro that should have been.  Those writers should be shot.

BUT  either way, they each needed more rehearsal for it, and they should have had it on paper.
I think those monitors may have either been too low or very hard to see--as they were NOT the only ones to have problems seeing/reading the scripts.

I really think IF Heath would have had his written on paper like Peter Graves did, he would have come off much better, and not so unprepared.  Would have been better if he would have memorized and recited back, and not let the material get personally too him/them.
I feel bad that they couldn't "cowboy up" and just stand at attention, too bad Heath couldn't have acted like he was still Harry Haversham, and stood straight till he got it over with.
I know they were very nervous, and that the script sucked, but they have to get more professional about their delivery, it really came off that Heath really couldn't take it seriously, and that comes off as negative to your peers.   They are very young, but they let the moment steal the situation, and it really got away from them.

I think what he meant was IF they would have had a clue as to people's reaction, the movie could have turned out very different, because of all the buzz----they would have been under much more pressure as to how to make it, and what their input to the characters should be.

not that they wouldn't have made the movie, but that any added pressure would have changed how they approached the material, and it wouldn't have been the same.
plus they are all getting sick of stupid questions, and the fact that too many people concentrate on the physical between the men, and not the concept of the story---which is what drew them into it in the first place.

I agree with you.  Jake Gyllenhaal admitted in the Oprah interview that if they knew the media attention the movie would bring, that they might not have done it.  Part of it of course are the expectations of movie viewers, but the actors were also not ready for the barrage of fans and press interviews.  Michelle and Heath are a bit shy while Jake and Anne are outgoing - they are just people and styles will vary.

Don't know if Heath was a bit tipsy or just nervous, but I too hope he overcomes it at the Oscar ceremony.  Jake looked at him funny a few times.  A Xanax and a Beta Blocker should temporarily help. :-)

If the actors don't win any Oscars, they still had parts in a trend setting film that will go down in the movie history books.  And it will add some stars to their portfolios.

You know of course I am biased toward "our" film at the moment, but I have to voice my opinion about the idea that an "ensemble" award SHOULD go to a huge cast....which it seems is the implication being made here. At first blush, I would say exactly the opposite with this rationale. The more actors the more "stories"(threads) within a film; and the more stories/threads, the more content for an audience to see and absorb. With more to absorb, the sheer variety is "interesting" and attention getting. And in the end, the greater the number of actors, the less responsibility or pressure or expectation that anyone of them has to carry the film. Whereas, take my train of thought here, and turn it on its head. The less actors in a film the greater the responsibility and pressure on each of their performance to carry the film. So in the end, I would say that a huge cast is a potential case of "get lost in the crowd", whereas with a cast of the number from "our" film, who DO all work together as an ensemble is far more deserving of an award if that is successful, as it is in "our" movie.

I'm am NOT dissing the movie Crash or its actors here. I'm speaking about a point of view.

I believe that on the Oprah show Heath and Jake said they would not have done this movie if they knew it woa going to produce this amount of buzz.

Ranchgal, I agree. That's what I thought Jake meant, and I think Anne Hathaway said something very similar. As you say, if they had expected it to be such a social phenom, such a message movie, they would have felt pressure to do it "right" which would have created different performances by the actors. Just paraphrasing you here.
I agree. So thank goodness it did turn out as it has...in fact that is probably an element which went into the performances (the lack of expectation of a large audience) and so the performances ended up creating this phenom. (Along with the great idea, the great scrrenplay, the great directing, the great editing, the great music, the great........)
