I'm just wondering.. is there a significance to Ennis refferring to Jack this way, "Jack F***ing Twist?? Out of jealousy or anger maybe? or is it something more.. I wondered this throughout the movie because he says it more than once, but not all the time.. what do you think??
-
It can be taken it as term of endearment... like when Ennis is about to hug Jack after a four year separation, 'Jack fu**in Twist" is that same as "Jack-I-can't-believe-you-are-really-here-because-I-missed-you-so-much-Twist"
-
hmm oh yes I remeber that part! thanks!

8) This part of the movie is my favourite one!! I really like Ennis' way of referring to someone he loves. It has nothing to with lack of respect, it is just like you say, there is tenderness in it, for sure. Besides, it is a relationship between two men which suggests a sort of brutality that we find all he movie along.

I believe that Ennis was so filled with sheer joy at the sight of Jack and that his expletive in referring to him reflects that. It is almost as if Ennis is incredulous at actually seeing Jack again. As rigid and repressed as Ennis was, he was happiest in the presence of Jack. Love is redeeming and elevates us when we are in the presence of that love.
-
It's obvious that Ennis was thrilled beyond expectation when Jack actually arrived! The expletive was probably uttered to add emphasis to his extremely "happy-to-see-you" mood. I love that scene. :-*

This is one of my favorites too. I believe Ennis use of the expletive was a term of endearment; especially in this scene. Don't forget...when the two hugged Jack said "son of a b**ch!" with a BIG smile on his face.
-
Actually, Ennis uses that line (MOVIE ONLY) about three times, if I remember correctly. The first is when Jack returns to him, at the top of the stairs, in ABSOLUTE JOY. Jack fu**in' Twist!!!! I knew right then how he felt, and his language came out loud and strong (and vulgar) in just the right way. He also used it later in the scene by the river (a later camping trip) where Jack again raised the idea of them being together - Ennis got mad at Jack's impatience, and as Jack stormed off "I"m just thinkin'!", Ennis says "Yeah, you're a real thinker. Jack fu**in' Twist" -it's more the usual kind of angry use of an expletive, but it's the same one. Ennis says it again *I think, I'm not sure* in their last confrontation, in a much much harsher way, but it's still "Jack fu**in Twist!" Can anyone recall the timing of that last one in the movie? In fact in the story, Ennis only uses "fu**in" when he fights with Alma in the kitchen. JACK, however, uses it liberally, almost 15 times in the course of the story, both when angry and just for effect sometimes.

After watching the movie a few more times, I noticed that Ennis calls Jack "f" Twist at least three times, and that gets a different meaning every time.
Besides the reunion scene, it happens in one of the fights during the fishing trips (when Jack suggests Ennis could maybe move to a different place, maybe Texas, and Ennis replies with the cruel "Alma will let you and Lureen adopt the children" joke.
And he also calls Jack "f" Twist in their last encounteur during the fight.
It is just one of the multiple "marks" in the evolving story I'd say.

I think that it is his pet name for Jack. Whether said in anger or in love.

Right like my Mom used to always call me by my first AND middle name, sometimes when mad but sometime as endearment.
-
I think that it's Ennis' "term of endearment" for Jack...the first time he uses it, wjhen they see each other after 4 years apart, he is expressing his happiness, and then when they're kind of bickering at the campsite you would sweat Ennis is talking to his spouse...the two of them bicker like two married people! That was one of my favorite parts.

I think its just a male thing to expression affection by calling names. My housemate used to refer to his beloved late brother as The A**hole - and they adored one another.
I can't resist this, tho. Imagine a happy ending, and Jack and Ennis are celebrating Jack's birthday in 2006. Ennis gives him a monogrammed wallet. Inside are stamped the initials JFT. An exchange:
Jack: "F" aint my middle initial, Ennis!
Ennis: Sure it is - Jack F***** Twist!
Jack: Ennis, you idiot, F***** isn't my middle name!
Ennis (grinning): Well, I can't fix it, and that wallet cost $50, so you'll just hafta stand it.

HA EXCELLENT!!! ;D

Yeah, I think it was when Ennis walked away from Jack's truck toward Jack and said, "I'm goin say this one time Jack F*----- in Twist, all them things..." I had heard that line in good times and bad so that makes me think even more that in that whole last threatening exchange Ennis wasn't really really angry with Jack.

I saw BBM for the 10th time tonight and everytime I hear Ennis say Jack F***** Twist I loved it. The way Ennis says it so lovingly shows how much he loves Jack. Isn't it interesting how Jack never gets mad when Ennis calls him that....:)

Why would he? He loves his Ennis, and knows exactly what he means... ;D

hey (first time posting here)
Until I read this topic, I never really gave much thought to Ennis saying JFT. It seemed so natural. But I always liked it when he said it, it always seemed full of love, even the last time, when he said it in anger. Someone siad they thought this ange wasn't real, but I think it was. He ends by saying "I ain't joking" that seems to come from so deep. The paradox is that even though this shows them so much at odds, it conveys maybe more than any other scene how much they love each other.
Jack and Ennis pop into my mind a lot these days. And when I think of Ennis, this is how I think of him, saying "JFT".
I have seen the movie an embarrassing number of times, though not as many as some of you. I have a feeling that Ennis had already said JFT when they were on BBM, but I can't remember exactly when. I just remember feeling that when he said it 4 yrs later, it seemed like it wasn't the first time.

Hello and Welcome...you will notice that we love discussing BBM...in details! ;D

Ennis uses to describe a strong feeling for Jack, whether as a term of endearment or wanting to kick his attitude. Anyone else start using that term for others in their life? I have.

Bingo....you are exactly right. As the emotions change he continues to use this pet name..but with different connotations depending on the mood of the scene. Also bear in mind that these were guys who were macho, western, without high levels of education. Swearing was just a part of their vocabulary.

You could always pepper your own speech with it, perhaps in place of "Jesus H. Christ!" or some other curse.
Him: Wanna help me take down the decorations?
You: Sure, I guess.
Him: Here, catch this one.
You: What?
CLUNNNNK!
You: >:( JACK F***IN' TWIST! Why don't you watch what you're doin'?

I used to have an orange towel that I hug everynight to sleep but it has since replaced by Pooh Bear. ;)

If only Ennis were more prim and proper in his demeanor. But then he wouldn't be Ennis..
-
By the way, it seems to me that Alma's epithet "Jack Nasty" is somehow related here.
I even wonder if she overheard Ennis say it some time (even at the reunion? he said it pretty loud and, yes, Alma was interested in what was going on).
And she was reading into the literal meaning of the phrase--oftentimes there is, you know, some deeper meaning in little phrases.
