Title: Hats off before you kiss guys
Post by: Rønnaug on Apr 29, 2007, 02:51 PM
Just saw FNIT, SNIT and Reunion kiss and started thinking about the similarity between SNIT and RK. And the difference in the similarity :)

SNIT: Jack slowly takes Ennis' hat and drops it next to them
RK: Ennis flips Jacks hat off quickly

SNIT: Jack gently pulls Ennis down on him after they kiss
RK: Ennis slams Jack into the wall

SNIT: Slow kissing both before and after they ley down
RK: Hurried, almost frantic kissing

Ying/ yang anyone? :)

Great comparisons, Esme!

I think the contrasts are in character with their respective personalities.  And I think Jack's gentleness is a delicious foil to Ennis's impulsiveness.  Both must have enjoyed the marked contrasts.   I know I did.  :)

I agree thats a great comparison. I never really took time to think about it until now.

And I agree it shows their contrasting personalities. the RK was more frantic and implusive cuz thats ennis for you. I think thats how he shows his affection, that and plus the fact that he hadnt seen jack in 4 years!! lol

jack is such a romantic type, and ennis isnt used to that.. especially not with a guy because even throughout the SNIT he is a bit apprehensive at first. You can tell his not completely comfortable walking into the tent until they start kissing and lay back. Thats also why I think the FNIT was so, um, impulsive  ::) :P

Italian_Dude , I have not had the pelasure of discussing with you in a while.  :)

Ennis was certainly not the romantic type, but in some ways he is the archetype of many romantic heroes/anti-heroes, with his sense of brooding and foreboding.   It certainly some of this shows in the kissing scenes of SNIT.  There was apprehension, mixed with repressed desire.

I think it's the mixture of apprehension and desire that makes the SNIT kisses so wonderful.  The admixture adds the necessary tautness.  It makes this scene comparatively lyrical, compared to the Reunion and FNIT kisses.

Although Jack initiated the SNIT and Ennis initiated the RK, they both behave the same in each scene.  In the SNIT, Ennis was as gentle as Jack and in the RK, Jack was as aggressive and slams Ennis into the other wall.  I think not only their different personality but also the pent up energy of not seeing each other for four years.

In any case both these kisses sent strong messages to one another. It's as if Jack was answering Ennis that he still loved him  even more too after 4 long years. giving as well as he got. I always feel that Ennis is thinking of the look on Jack's face the last time he saw him. As if he wanted to *make it up* to Jack somehow, to erase that sad frown  ( and the black eye from that punch) he remembered and replace it with hope again. He finally got his 2nd chance.  Perhaps in a way he was admitting he was wrong to ever let Jack go in the first place.  Jack was taken completly off guard but Ennis could'nt wait to do it. Apparently he thought Jack was still mad.

Perhaps Ennis was a bit too agressive in the reunion kiss.  And to a certain extent, he was too passive in the SNIT.  But in either case, Jack seemed to have loved it, although he didn't seem to have expected the intensity of Ennis's assault in the former.

Hats off had nothing to do with the way they felt when they met again after four years they new they were in love of lust.  But on the second night when Ennis went to the front of the tent he had removed his hat as in any old western movie most men would remove there hats when greeting someone they would end up kissing.

Except perhaps that they dispensed with formaliities in the reunion kiss: I think it was more a rediscovery of their own feelings of longing and desire that got the better of them -- and indeed, a renewed resurgence of love.  Lust is a part of all three, but I think it was not the only thing that made them reckless in the reunion kiss.  The fact that they did not bother to take Jack's hat off properly certainly indicates an involuntary reaction that neither of them could control.  IMO, this was because the proximity brought back everything that they had kept stored away for 4 long years inside of them, and it simply poured out of them the moment they were in each other's physical presence.

Yes, there is a sense of balance to it all...

They were agressive, all right, but I think they had to be that way to convey what they were feeling at the time.  A gentle, soft kiss at the Reunion would have been a BIG letdown to Jack ( and all of us!!!).  We needed to SEE that energy, that WANTING, bare, priimal and even a bit violent.  The SNIT was the reaction to the FNIT where we saw the agression.  Now,  in the SNIT, it was time for the other end of the spectrum -- time to take it slowly and relish what was happening.  It's this mixture that keeps it so good for us.  We never know how they will react to one another until we see the following scenes.  Now, of course, the newness has worn off for all of us.  But we still can remember and discuss what it was like seeing it for the first time.  All their kisses were unforgettable.  That's part of the reason why I think Ang didn't show more kissing.  When they kissed, it was startling and IMPORTANT.  We perked up and took notice of what was being conveyed by those kisses and the way they were bestowed.  Great movie making, to my way of thinking -- eventhough a bit minimalist.

Well said, lamusica.

The FNIT and the Reunion were also intense on account of their being "firsts".  The FNIT was their first sexual encounter, and the Reunion was their first meeting in 4 years.  The kisses reflect their pent up feelings accordingly.

All the time spent before the FNIT put us in an anticipatory mood, the same way that the post-BBM scenes prior to the Reunion also build up our expectations when they finally meet again.

There is a wonderful balance and sense of proportion in each of these correspondences.   They trace wonderful arcs and stress points in the story.  Wonderful in an architectonic sense.

AMEN!!! Ennis just wanted to taste those lips after such a long draught. Ennis's eyes were sparkling when he removed that hat and approached, he wanted that kiss!

I am not even sure that Ennis was conscious of what he was doing during the reunion kiss.  It seemed like he just knocked the hat out of the way in his impatience to get to Jack's lips.  Nothing would stand in the way of his getting it.

And nothing was going to stand in the way of Jack giving  it either! They both wated it in my opinion. Personally as i first watched this I expected a short peck. Needless to say, I was pleasantly suprised! <^( :c)

This is true.  He certainly gave back as much as he got, didn't he?  Hat or no hat.  ;)

In this scene I see Jack reaches for the hat first , then Ennis discards it to the side himself.  Does any one else see this? It is such a romantic moment with this kiss, as if it was something they both wanted  to do for a while.

In the reunion kiss, no?  I should take a closer look.  It was very fast, and my impression was that the hat just got knocked off in the heat of the moment...

And if you take their hats as symbols of their masculinity, their involvement in the image of the Westerner, then putting them aside becomes symbolic of their move into a different sort of role and relationship.

That is, they were laying this conception of masculinity aside, in subservience to their love for one another?

Yes, it was a scene of movement - from outisde to inside, from work to pleasure, from friendship to love, from macho to tender, and the hat represents so many of those things.

Well said, Welshwitch.

In the subject of hats being masculine, the "Dozy Embrace", to me, meant that you can be both masculine and tender at the same time since they both have their hats on.  Perhaps the most masculine and the most tender of the movie.  Definately sweet and sad.
