When ennis met cassie i believe it was 1978 because the next scene was jack and laureen at the dance with randell and lashawn and the banner on the wall said 1978.
Last scene jack and ennis together i believe was in 1982 jack says to ennis all this time and you aint found no-one else to marry, ennis says i been putting the blocks to a good looking girl over in riverton.
So by what ennis is saying this is the first time he had told jack about cassie wich i find strange as it seems ennis went out with cassie for four years.
Also when ennis said it would be nov before i can come out here again.Jack said what the hell happened to august then ennis said i cant quit this one and i cant get the time off it was hard enough getting this time.
The trade off WAS august so ennis is talking as though august has passed so what august is jack talking about cant be august the following year, surely they would,nt have gone all that time without seeing each other.
Any ideas to clarify the dates and times . :t)

That's a good point about Cassie. I never really thought of their relationship in terms of years, although the movie seems to indicate they've been together for a while, from some of Cassie's remarks, etc. She's barely a footnote in the OS. But either way, I guess it wouldn't surprise me one way or another if Ennis discussed her much or not, Ennis being Ennis.
As to the comments about August, their final meeting is in the spring. They were supposed to get together again in August but Ennis bows out, because of work. So they won't be able to meet again until November. When he says "Was tough enough getting this time. The trade off was August", he means that although they were originally going to meet in spring and in August, he couldn't get time off for both those meets, so he had to choose between August and spring and he chose spring. Which makes sense to me, because he'd want to see Jack as soon as he could and put off the time they had to cancel.

Yes. To get the time off work in the spring in order to be at the meet in which this conversation takes place, Ennis had to trade in the time he would have taken in August.

I think what makes it confusing is that directly after the conversation between cassie and alma jr
ennis drops alma off then the next scene is jack and ennis at their last meeting together .
Not realising it had jumped a couple of years. :s)

Yes, it did feel like the two scenes were contiguous, no? Well, in a sense, this is understandable.
