Title: Brokeback Mountain Tops Oscar Bets
Post by: brokebackmountain on Dec 23, 2005, 12:07 AM
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Gay and political films are dominating this year's
Academy Awards race with some experts expecting that Oscar will wind up wearing pink, either for left-leaning politics or sexual preference.

As Hollywood starts its annual awards season leading to the March 5 Oscars, key front-runners in main categories are either gay-themed or political films, with Ang Lee's "Brokeback Mountain," a drama of love between cowboys, leading the pack in the all-important best picture race.

Title: Join the campaign to ensure Brokeback wins, even if it loses at the Oscars...

I have a foolproof plan to ensure that even if Brokeback doesn't win the Oscar for Best Picture, it still wins more fans.

It started with me being the worst gambler in the world. Whatever I lay a wager on loses. Given that, I've placed a bet on Crash to win Best Picture; £10 at odds of 7/1. Before you start pelting me with dung and rotten fruit, my reasoning is this: Crash and Brokeback seem to be the only two left in the race, so if I back Crash it loses and Brokeback wins. Excellent result.

But what if for some dreadful reason the universe decides to punish be by letting me win my bet? I win £80, but Brokeback loses. Bad result.

This got me thinking: how can I turn this into a positive? I have the answer. I've decided to use any money that I win on Crash (roughly $130-$140) to spread the Brokeback gospel. This means paying for tickets for people that haven't seen it (free tickets can overcome reluctance!), buying the book for people, buying the DVD for them when it eventually comes out etc.

Then I realised: what if we all did this? Imagine if all of us on this board bet on Crash to win: if Brokeback wins, we each lose a little money; if Crash wins (booo!), Brokeback gets a serious pile of money being spent to make sure it's seen by even more people.

So, fellow PBS sufferers, I call on you to join the campaign! Bet on Crash to win, so that even if Brokeback loses, many more people get to see this stunning movie, and it still wins!

BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN NEEDS YOU!

PS: Once I work out how to upload images, I will proudly display my betting slip...

MODS: I'm aware that this might also be posted in the 'Oscar Buzz' section, but given the nature of the campaign I wanted as many people as possible to see it... hope you agree.
