In the scene which Jack was presenting the farm machine (the big wheel) to the crowd and Lureen was working at the office. There were two gentlemen having conversation about Jack. I couldn’t hear what they said exactly. Was it like something...“he used to drag”
If so, it means the rumors has been moving around in Childress and lead to the murder at the end?
(English is not my first language. Please don’t mind if there any grammar mistakes on my post :) )

Laundrymat, the conversation hasd more to do with Jack's former stint at the Rodeo.
Farmer 1: Didn't that piss-ant used to ride bulls?
Farmer 2: He used to try...
Lurren look disappointed at her husband and says nothing...

Ahh…got it. Thank you ever so.
He used to drag?? ;D
I’ll pay more attention when I go see the movie next time...

I cannot see Jack having done drag. However, I think it is much more possible in his case than that of Ennis.
-
I think Lureen looked up disappointed with her father during the farm equipment scene. He never showed respect for Jack. The mirror scene is where Jack turns off the TV and tells the old man to sit down. Lureen shows some delight in the fact that Jack makes a stand and that her father was put in his place.

I think Lureen looked up disappointed with Jack. She could have said something in his defense (I mean how about "that's my husband" that's all it would have taken and the men would have been embarrassed and apologetic - it's a WOMAN they've offended). But, she doesn't do that. I'm disappointed in her.

Yep. Lureen's obviously not a shy woman, so why didn't she say something to defend Jack? I think that scene shows part of the reason she became so wrapped up in numbers and work. It wasn't just the Jack/Ennis triangle; she was disappointed in her choice of a husband, too. Her father's disapproval of Jack probably had a big influence on her as well.

I defend Lureen in the thanksgiving scene
she's clearly proud of Jack in that case....and I think she loves him much more than his father.
(after all she married him even if her father didn't like him)
At that time, in that place (and not only then or there..) women had just to keep quiet when men were arguing with each other,
her mother too remains silent all the time.
-
Even if the two guys had been talking about how he used to drag, they probably would have been referring to drag racing. I'm from a small town in Texas, and that's what I would assume if heard someone say that. Most people here don't call wearing drag, doing drag. Well, except for this drag queen friend of mine...

In the middle camping scen when Ennis gets out of the truck, goes over to Jack You do hear them say"
Ennis: Look what I brought.
Jack: Beans.
Ennis: Gonna fix'm just like I used to.
I never heard this all the way through until I sw it at a friends house with a screening room wth surround sound, erc.

Ennis: "gettin tired of your dumb ass missin"
Jack: "?"
Help...Thanks Handell
-
Something to the effect of "Let's get a move on... Don't want no Game & Fish to catch us with no elk..."
-
just a short one..
in the novel the kiss at the reunion and ennis says little darlin' - thought i had heard it in the film, too...?? not in the scene book!

I am not sure about this. I do know he seemed to be mumbling something to Jack right before he shoves Jack against the wall and kisses him -- I had assumed it was "Come here..."
-
Thanks dirtbiker. I can't tell you how many times I have watched and rewatched this scene trying to understand what Jacks words. By the way (off topic a moment), I read your story, it really moved me deeply.

No problem, Handell. You could turn on the subtitles on the DVD and confirm the hard to hear dialog ;)
-
Tizi I always thought he said "Later" after he did the nuzzle.
Tpe I also hear him say "Come here" before he kisses Jack :)

I guess I'm going to pull out the DVD and turn on the captions. If I see confirmation of both I'm going to just melt.
-
I have headphones and can hear a lot more than I did before I got them. He definitely says Come here before he shoves him into the wall. <^( I love when they embrace and Jack says Ennis and it goes right into Sonofabitch almost like it's one word. <^(

I don't have headphones but I heard the "come here" too....and the mumbled "later" as he does the nuzzle.
Oh, and that "Ennisonofabitch" thing....adorable <^(

wonderful.....
sigh!! :\'( :\'(
you know, i maybe just wanted him to say "little darlin" as he did in the story....

Yes, MIchelle. He does say "Later" in the end. Ennis mumbles quite a lot, doesn't he? ;)

That's alright, tizi17. I guess a lot of us wanted to hear it as well... :)
-
I'm more of a Jack/Jake girl, but Ennis's "come here" just makes me melt inside, the way he says it, sort of whispering and growling at the same time... <^(
I watched the reunion scene with the subtitles on a few months ago, just to check what was said, and as I remember it, the nuzzle Ennis says "hey..." first, then something like "let's go" or "come on" :-\\ I remember it cause I was surprised, I always thought he said "later" :-\\ It sounds like "later" and I want him to say "later", so as far as I'm concerned, the subtitles are wrong and he says "later".So there! ::)
The subtitles aren't always right anyway, cause before FNIT it has Jack saying it's too late to go the sheep, but it's Ennis saying it (unless I'm mistaken, but it sounds like Ennis to me). And in SNIT,where Ennis is supposed to be saying "I'm sorry", even though I've tried to convince myself it's that, cause I really want it to be, but it just sounds like Jack saying "it's alright" to me :( ???
-
Very curious, CrimsonSky. I must say that I had not turned on the subtitles. The discrepancy between what we think we hear and the subtitles is quite strange, although I had noticed this before in some other dvds. And yes, I do think Ennis said "Hey" quite distinctly...
-

A word of caution on putting too much faith in the subtitles. In several cases they DO NOT match the dialog. Example -The campfire scene where Ennis tells about his Sis and how he and his brother worked in Worland, Jack replies "Friend, that's more words than . . . . " The subtitles show him saying "Man, that's more words than. . . " !!! Quite a difference. There's other's too, it's fun to watch and see how many you can spot.
The guys that do subtitles in Hollywood are not the hgihest paid crew around.
Another cuiosity is to listen to the French dialog version with English subtitles. One incredible ommission in this version of the soundtrack is in the FNIT when Ennis spits on his hand, the whole spitting sound effect for this action is left out of the French dialog version! Maybe there is some cultural reason for this, spitting may be extremely vulgar or something, but it seems like a very significant ommission.

Sometimes Ennis whispers so low that the captions don't even register, but did hear the "hey" and the "later" and I coul d've sworn I heard "little darlin" just as he grabs Jack by the lapels to push him back to the wall.
-
Ennis mumbling all the time can be quite trying at times. The confrontation with Cassie is perhaps one of the most perfect scenes to illustrate how difficult the words came out of Ennis later in life...

Yes , You should invest in a good set of headphones. And turn on your surroundsound if you have it. You will hear so much more.

Interesting. So there was a lot more said than what is put down in the official screenplay, I gather... Not at all unlikely...

Forgive me if this was discussed before - I'm new to this site and am a little overwhelmed with all the posts (but they're great).
I read on a thread someplace - still trying to find it again - that in the closet when Ennis was hugging the shirts, he said "I love you". I have seen this movie 15 times, yes 15, and never heard that. Has anyone else?
Also, in the SNIT scene, as i wrote in another thread, i think all the words were spoken by Jack and they sounded like these, "Come here" (very faint - just before pulling in for the kiss) and then, "Can i kiss you?". After the kiss, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry, It's all right". It's said so softly, lips barely moving, & the music crescendoing, that it's difficult to understand. My subtitles had all of this except the "come here", but as it was said, subtitles are not always accurate. In Lureen's phone call with Ennis, the subtitles said "i know you were his fishing buddy and his hunting buddy". We all know she didn't say "hunting". did she?
any thoughts?

BBM Fan, welcome.
I also agree with you that subtitles are not always accurate. In the end, what we hear or think we hear becomes very subjective.
Personally, I believe that word "love" was only mentioned only twice in the entire movie. This limited usage seems to be in keeping with the spirit of the short story, and with the overall restraint of the film. Use of it is, in many ways, quite secondary, if unnecessary. We know, even if we do not hear.
-
I guess I can post this in here.. :)
In the reunion scene, I hear things, but I'm not sure, if it's just me.. Do you hear this:
1. After the Jack Fukin' Twist, Jack says Ennis.
2. After the hug, Ennis says, come here.
3. In this scene (https://ennisjack.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg371.imageshack.us%2Fimg371%2F2333%2F2e3zf9.jpg&hash=588a7400b07a7ddcaffb12c595b986b95af42547)
Jack says camoon.
4. After the nose rubbing Ennis says Later.
Am I just hearing things, or do you hear any of these?
-
you're hearing things my dear - what was it about the headphones???
but you are right with what you hear... at no 1 we also have ennissonofabitch, no?
and at 4: i still am more than convinced that he said "little darlin'" as in the ss... i know, maybe i'm just dreaming... music is a bit loud there, just stepping in. but i swar i can hear this..
tizi
-
The headphones told me these lines ;D I so hear them. I have to listen the "little darlin' " cos, I don't hear it, I always thought, that the nose rubbing( same as my avatar) is the same as the little darlin' without words.. IMO. But of course I'm willing to listen that. I just love to watch that scene over and over again.. <^(

My subtitles say (& I realize they're not always accurate) that Ennis says, "Come here" & later, as he pulls Jack off him, he says "hey". I don't hear "later", but I know others do. I gained a lot from the subtitles. People always mention muting or turning down the music while using the headphones. How do you do that?

Hmm, I don't do it, and I don't know how to do it, maybe there have to be better music equipments..?

I'm not sure how its done but I never heard "later" until I watched this youtube video. The sound is fantastic.

Hey Carbyville: I've watched this video, ah, once or twice. This is the best for hearing everything. But I hadn't heard "later" until now. Thanks for pointing that out. Right after Ennis says "later", as he "slaps" Jack's face, he says, "Hey". Can you hear that?
TWISTED: You can also hear "Yeah!" in the FNIT in this video. I think it's pretty clear. More research necessary ^-^

Welcome to the forum, Dasha. There's a lot here to digest, so take your time. :)
I couldn't hear him say it either, but I have never really tried to amplify this part.
As for what Jack said in the SNIT, I think there is an entire thread devoted to what we think we heard.
You can check the INDEX THREAD for a partial list of old topics. :)

Try as I might I can't hear the F me- even with headphones and trust me I have tried ;D I'm sure it's there and sometimes I think I hear it but I can't confirm if it's that or a grunt. ;)
I don't hear "come here" either in SNIT
I do hear Ennis Say I love you in the shirts scene and also hear him say "Jack" a few moments before.

Well Dasha, Spanish people watch the films dubbed into Spanish. My country has a deep tradition in dubbing and the professionals in the matter makes an amazing and stunning work, really perfect, translating even the most extremely low sound. So when I saw BBM in Spanish I heard a lot more words and sounds (like whispers and snorts....) than when I saw it in original version (for example when Ennis arrives injured after his meeting with the bear, I heard more words in Spanish that in English Ennis and Jack seemed not to say…). In fact in Spanish version Ennis’ voice is not as low as Heath’s voice and you don’t have any difficult to understand him; and also they both, Jack and Ennis, in Spanish, during SNIT, speaks louder than in English, so you can heard them perfectly.
So, in Spanish SNIT is like this:
Ennis: I’m sorry….
Jack: Sssch, It’s all right, It’s all right…..
Jack: Come here….Lie down….
I hope this help you dear Dasha!!! ^f^

:h) Dasha, and #$# to the forum.I relly hope you enjoy your stay here¡
:h) also to my dear compatriot Tammy, with who I agree completely in the first part of her post, but not in the second (~) , honey...).As I remember the scene is in this way:
When Ennis enters into the tent, they say nothing after they´ve kissed, that´s when Ennis says two times:-"I´m sorry..." Jack says until three times "-It´s allright",and after:-"Come here...Lie down..."
It´s more or less the same, but said in different order. ::) I must explain that this is in the original version, with subtittles, because all the movie is rather difficult to understand without this help, the dialect they speak is more dense still and, above all,my English knowledge is limited...rather limited. ;D
Hope don´t be angry with me,Tammy... #) and that our help has served for anything. :^^)

Well sweetie, dubbing into spanish Jack say twice It's all right, not three times.., and that's what so many brokies heard too......Some people confuse the second I'm sorry with It's all right, because they say it so low that it sounds similar; but it's only two It's all right, I think.....
And yes, they say something after they've kissed, in fact they say all after they kissed!!! Well hon, I think you wanted to write before. And you are right....My post wasn't ok , so I've changed it while you was writing yours!! Sorry!!! ^f^

BabyTammy, I've had some real problems with the Spanish and French versions, on my DVD. The wildest one is FNIT, where, in the English,
Jack is grunting like he's in pain (remember your saying--"they went at it like animals..".
But on the French version, I don't know if I'm imagining this or not, but Jack is making sounds, much different, of intense pleasure, and the
sounds are...romantic, not animal. Anyone else hear this? Is this a French thing, and I wouldn't understand? That their culture required a more
sensual version, like love-moaning? Am I imagining this?

Well Tony, I don't know in French version but in Spanish version Jack is making sounds similiar to Ennis. Sounds of effort, passion, difficulty to breath and pleasure. I think it's is quite similar in both versions, English and Spanish, but you have to think that these kind of sounds sometimes are wild, rough, ambiguous....A lot of times it seems that somebody is killing us instead of making us love......You know that. And also, go at it like animals doesn't mean that it wasn't pleasant for Jack......He repeated.... ;)

French being my first language, I could tell you the French dubbed version is an abomination.
Sorry for the O.T. :-X

Maybe the words weren't translated well, but the sounds from Jack sure were different. Maybe the French like sex more. Or knew Jack
better. Sounded more to me like ah, ah, ahhh, then the urgh, uh, uh, urghk, in the English version. Jack were rollin' with them doings.

Let's just say (to remain on topic), too many times what was said in the original and what was said in the French dubbed version was like watching two different movies... yes that bad! >:(
We are now going back to our scheduled program :)

Cham, hope this isn't O.T. too - but I remember watching the French language version (months ago with English subtitles) and noticed that in the FNIT scene the critical spitting sound made by Ennis was almost non-existent. Is this right? I'm just guessing that maybe you've watched more than I and you did or didn't notice this, maybe I'm just imagining it. Is there some cultural reason this sound would be edited out from a French language release? Just curious, this seemed like such a critical sound in conveying the, ahem, importance of the action that to leave it out seemed intentional.
:s) :s) :s)
-
I would need to look at the French version, which I watched only once... one time too much I.M.O.
About the whispers during the SNIT, the subtittles are very explicit.

How interesting! So if I understand the discussion here, they even dubbed the moanings and sounds of love-making? I guess this is only expected, to make sure that everything sounds consistent.

God! I guess I should have known this, but I've never really noticed. I guess it's because most of the international films I watch are subtitled and not dubbed. :)

Nice to know you like Almodovar Thomas!!!

I had trouble understanding some of the whispered and spoken lines, but using "subtitles" was most helpful. However, some of the subtitles may not be totally accurate--as many "Brokies" quoted scenes diferently than what came up on my screen. Just watched Jake in "Rendition" with subtitles on, and he was to die for!!!
-
After watching and listening to BBM countless times, both in theaters and DVD I'd say the subtitles are quite accurate... specially with Ennis (no big surprise!)
-
I should turn on the susbtitles. I had not done this, actually... I guess it was because I relied early on on the screenplay, although I know that even with the final version of the said screenplay, there are a few variances with the actual dialogue in the movie.
