It will be a nice collection for them to get the postcards from all over the world. Let's do it before the Oscar (March 5)

Sunspot has organized a Brokeback Mountain Mail Campaign to thank
Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal and Ang Lee for their incredible work
of art which has touched so many of us.

If everyone who wishes to participate sends their cards the same
week, then they are sure to have great impact. There was interest in
sending these cards before the Oscars, and the suggested mailing
date is February 17.

Here is Sunspot's write-up. This will be cross-posted to various
forum threads and we'll also put an alert in the News Box on the
forum home page.

Saying Thanks To Heath & Jake

Brokeback Mountain screenwriters Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana
spoke briefly and answered audience questions after a late-January
American Film Institute screening of the film in Los Angeles. Diana
noted the difficulty they had getting the film produced. Everybody
loved the screenplay, they had relatively little trouble securing
financing and directors, but they could never get two young actors
to commit to playing the roles of Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist.
They'd send the screenplay to a promising young actor, the actor
would read it and contact them immediately, excited about the
project, and then slowly drift away, never to be heard from again.
Maybe the actors worried they weren't up to the task. Maybe they
had second thoughts about playing a man in love with another man.
Maybe their agents or handlers talked them out of it. Whatever the
case, this went on for the better part of a decade. Larry & Diana
never could get two actors to commit to the project at the same
time. Producers and directors came and went, and the film remained
unmade.

It might have stayed that way too, if it hadn't been for Jake
Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger.

Thousands of men – and a startling number of women – have taken the
time to express online and in print how much seeing this film has
impacted them, how much it's meant to them, how deeply it mirrors
the landscape of their own lives. As one man put it, Brokeback
Mountain was the first time he's seen a love story in a theater
where the projector was doing all the projecting, instead of relying
on him to do half of it.

The film has also stirred up a storm of indignation from both
extremes of the culture wars. Elite religious fundamentalists are
horrified by the film's vivid portrayal of the lead characters as
human beings – instead of easily-vilified stereotypes – coping with
the corrosive culture of hate these same fundamentalist leaders
actively promote. Meanwhile, Hollywood gossip mongers and vicious
media queens have taken to dissecting every statement, every gesture
Ledger & Gyllenhaal have made in public, as part of a ridiculous,
holier-than-thou crusade to condemn any perceived homophobia on the
part of the two actors.

I'm sure there must be times when the two of them wonder what they
ever did to merit the shrill braying of so many asses. Like many
pioneers before them, they seem to be amassing quite the collection
of arrows in their backs.

If Brokeback Mountain told some part of your own story or the story
of someone you love, if it made you look at your own experiences and
choices anew, if the performances impressed you or connected with
you in a way you hadn't experienced before, let the actors who gave
life to these characters know that. Let them know that their work
has a meaning to you beyond the Hollywood hype machine, beyond the
media manipulators and their manufactured controversies, beyond the
box office and the awards.

Send them a postcard. Just a simple postcard, perhaps featuring a
photograph of some local landscape or a favorite landmark, maybe
your own Brokeback Mountain. You can pick up a couple of cards at a
gas station along a highway, or at a shop near your local tourist
haunts. Some US post offices even have plain postcards, like the
ones Ennis sent in the film, sporting the new 24-cent postcard
rate. Simply write "Thank you" on each card – the same way Ennis
wrote "You bet" on his reply to Jack – sign your name and address
one to Heath Ledger and one to Jake Gyllenhaal care of their agency:

Heath and Jake seem like a couple of thoughtful, perceptive guys.
They had to be, in order to portray their roles in Brokeback
Mountain so vividly and accurately. If they receive a bunch
of "Thank you" postcards from folks scattered around the globe they
should get the message loud and clear, and appreciate it the way so
many have appreciated this film and their thoughtful work in it.

Ang Lee also uses CAA, if you would like to thank him as well.

Thanks to Lee and the principle cast and playwrights, we finally get a "true" to life story about two guys being love that doesn't depict us as the religious right would prefer, ie. the villian.

Super ! Spread the word ! Perhaps we could vote on a theme for the postcard (mountains, or shirts, or something), and then everyone can send a postcard with a picture of that theme.

Post by: BBM Obsessed on Feb 15, 2006, 06:43 PM: I picked up some laser/inkjet postcards from Office Max and printed BBM-related photos to them. It was a fun little project. I really hope the recipients enjoy and appreciate the love we're sending to them. :-*

My postcards went out today. In addition to those, I also sent one to Jake's home, which is only a few miles from mine. ;)

Post by: karind1 on Feb 15, 2006, 08:22 PM: i sent a letter to jake c/o caa last week telling him the story of how brokeback and his and everyone's acting got me thru my birthday alone (first day i saw BBM) the day i knew i had thyroid cancer (thank Goodness not rehnquist kind). i will send out thank you stuff after I get out of hospital tomorrow. i have been radioactive since monday-and in isolation in here b o r i n g- however, the guy with the geiger counter said i would get out tomorrow. cross your fingers i have GOT to get out of here tomorrow or i will go battier than i already am! i need to get off my dial up laptop to my broadband to see ravenus new vid and to read this faster--i llive in los angeles so my mail will get there fast. i am so glad we all met- i have turned some folks on to this site. bye from old woman karin karind1-- oh when i was young i was what they used to call then a "groupie-" it was the 60's and i was kinda a hot looking girl-with an appetite to go after what i thought was what i wanted. unfortunately, that was not the greatest thing to do if you want real self worth--but i did it then. now i only can dream.....and remember. lots of great rock and roll bands at the time, and i did meet warren beatty and richard harris and omar sharif and others and of course the rock and roll dudes!! if you are ever in los angeles you have to let me know. we are all together in this. so nice. cross your fingers i am outta this friggin hospital tomorrow. karind1 karin

if there is a tourist trap near you the gas stations or truck stops will have em. or try a bookstore or a drugstore like cvs or savon or whatever you have there or even a market--or you can just send a letter like i did. karin

Hey yeah! What about Roberta Maxwell? Can those who got these other contact addresses find hers? She had such a small, but such a massively powerful role in the film.....and I guess we have to say so did ...Peter....ouch can't recall his name...who played Jack's father, but especially Roberta Maxwell's Mrs.Twist should be thanked. I tried to get it "out in the wild" but had no luck. I don't have an IMDB PRO subscription but if someone does have that, they might get it there.

Please do make them available to us, members of ennisjack.com, I think it's a truly great idea. I've sent my own personal cards, but these are just so great!

I think having the the pre-printed sentiment AND the address pre-printed is convenient.....but I would suggest a slight modification to the design if you do keep those elements, namely, add an obvious (boxed or not) blank area for a handwritten personal message and signature. They are wonderful cards, but we should add some handwritten personal note and certainly add our signatures to keep them definitely the private effort they are by members of this forum and not some mass-mailing action which might lose some impact.

Thanks for making them and making those images available. I hope you do provide the full size so we can print off our own copies.

I made these designs last night at home until 2am morning (Malaysia time is 12 hour advance from US by the way), and felt so sleepy and went to bed and didn't manage to upload the original version. After I gather some suggestions and modify the design, I'll post them again!

I would like to design same postcard version for others (BBM) who also nominated for Oscar, but seems hardly get their photos, if anyone have any of them please PM to me!

For those of you that think that one person cant make a difference there is a saying that one letter received is equal to the opinions of 10,000 people that didn't pick up a pen. This is why letter writing campaigns are so effective. Everyone that has taken the time to write is truly doing a great thing. Your postcards are making a difference in the choices Hollywood, Focus Features, and the cast may make in the future.

I wrote to Heath, Jake, Michelle, Anne, Ang, and Roberta Maxwell.
Although I recognize that Ang Lee's is the vision which has moved us all, I found that I couldn't connect emotionally to him when writing so my letter to him was the shortest and most straightforward thank you.
For, Michelle and Anne, I could write more and express more emotion.
For Jake I could certainly express even more emotion and actually teared up while writing to him.
For Heath and for Roberta, I actually broke down and cried while trying to express my feelings about their performances and what the movie meant to me.
I wouldn't be surprised if those letters are literally tear-stained!

I can't believe that at my age, I'm writing fan letters to movie personalities! I'm just amazed at that! But proud to do it for this film and these people.

If anyone gets any sort of response from any correspondence sent, I hope he or she will share that with the rest of us. Frankly I don't expect to get any response, but I definitely put my return address on the letters. I"m not sure if "movie stars" respond to fan mail these days, and I seriously doubt it, but who knows!
I'd LOVE to hear from Roberta Maxwell of all....well of course Heath....and Jake....and heck everyone!

Among other thoughts and personal statements in each letter, I told each person that I felt the movie was a real masterpiece work of art, and an important film which has already touched so many lives and that the movie will teach tolerance for years to come.

4 inche by 6 inches is usually postcard size, but let me know if you are using photoshop then I wil give you the pixel size, hope this helps

Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal and Ang Lee for their incredible work
of art which has touched so many of us.

If everyone who wishes to participate sends their cards the same
week, then they are sure to have great impact. There was interest in
sending these cards before the Oscars, and the suggested mailing
date is February 17.

Here is Sunspot's write-up. This will be cross-posted to various

Saying Thanks To Heath & Jake

Brokeback Mountain screenwriters Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana
spoke briefly and answered audience questions after a late-January
American Film Institute screening of the film in Los Angeles. Diana
noted the difficulty they had getting the film produced. Everybody
loved the screenplay, they had relatively little trouble securing
financing and directors, but they could never get two young actors
to commit to playing the roles of Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist.
They'd send the screenplay to a promising young actor, the actor
would read it and contact them immediately, excited about the
project, and then slowly drift away, never to be heard from again.
Maybe the actors worried they weren't up to the task. Maybe they
had second thoughts about playing a man in love with another man.
Maybe their agents or handlers talked them out of it. Whatever the
case, this went on for the better part of a decade. Larry & Diana
never could get two actors to commit to the project at the same
time. Producers and directors came and went, and the film remained
unmade.

It might have stayed that way too, if it hadn't been for Jake
Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger.

Thousands of men – and a startling number of women – have taken the
time to express online and in print how much seeing this film has
impacted them, how much it's meant to them, how deeply it mirrors
the landscape of their own lives. As one man put it, Brokeback
Mountain was the first time he's seen a love story in a theater
where the projector was doing all the projecting, instead of relying
on him to do half of it.

The film has also stirred up a storm of indignation from both
extremes of the culture wars. Elite religious fundamentalists are
horrified by the film's vivid portrayal of the lead characters as
human beings – instead of easily-vilified stereotypes – coping with
the corrosive culture of hate these same fundamentalist leaders
actively promote. Meanwhile, Hollywood gossip mongers and vicious
media queens have taken to dissecting every statement, every gesture
Ledger & Gyllenhaal have made in public, as part of a ridiculous,
holier-than-thou crusade to condemn any perceived homophobia on the
part of the two actors.

I'm sure there must be times when the two of them wonder what they
ever did to merit the shrill braying of so many asses. Like many
pioneers before them, they seem to be amassing quite the collection
of arrows in their backs.

If Brokeback Mountain told some part of your own story or the story
of someone you love, if it made you look at your own experiences and
choices anew, if the performances impressed you or connected with
you in a way you hadn't experienced before, let the actors who gave
life to these characters know that. Let them know that their work
has a meaning to you beyond the Hollywood hype machine, beyond the
media manipulators and their manufactured controversies, beyond the
box office and the awards.

Send them a postcard. Just a simple postcard, perhaps featuring a
photograph of some local landscape or a favorite landmark, maybe
your own Brokeback Mountain. You can pick up a couple of cards at a
gas station along a highway, or at a shop near your local tourist
haunts. Some US post offices even have plain postcards, like the
ones Ennis sent in the film, sporting the new 24-cent postcard
rate. Simply write "Thank you" on each card – the same way Ennis
wrote "You bet" on his reply to Jack – sign your name and address
one to Heath Ledger and one to Jake Gyllenhaal care of their agency:

Heath and Jake seem like a couple of thoughtful, perceptive guys.
They had to be, in order to portray their roles in Brokeback
Mountain so vividly and accurately. If they receive a bunch
of "Thank you" postcards from folks scattered around the globe they
should get the message loud and clear, and appreciate it the way so
many have appreciated this film and their thoughtful work in it.
