Title: The Aguirre Questionnaire
Post by: chowhound on Oct 13, 2009, 02:17 PM
I thought it not might be fun for some of us to undertake our own investigation about Aguirre. So here we go:

1. General.

(a). What is Aguirre's first name?

(b) How old is he?

(c) Is he:

(i) Married
(ii) Single
(iii) Gay

(d) If married:

    (i) How does he usually address his wife.
(ii) If he has children, what are their names.

(d) Does a detailed examination of his office reveal anything about his personality?

2. The Brokeback Scene. (I've always found this an intriguing scene as, to start with, we, the audience, think we're seeing Jack and Ennis unaided and it is only later that we recognize that the whole scene we've been witnessing has been through the lenses of Aguirre's binoculars). So:

(a) What do you see in the scene before you recognize that we're watching it through Aguirre's binoculars.

(b) What do you think Aguirre sees.

(c) Why does Aguirre delay before riding up to give Jack the news of his uncle's illness.

(d) Why does Aguirre say nothing to Jack about what he has seen.

(e) If you have a talent for such things, recreate the phone call between Mrs. Twist and Aguirre.

3. A Year Later.

When Jack comes to see Aguirre the following year about work on Brokeback, Aguirre has this to say to him:

"Twist, you guys wasn't gettin'  to leave the dogs baby-sit the sheep while you stemmed the rose."

Does this remark reveal him as :

(a) homophobic

(a) a practical, head-headed business man.

(c) some combination of the above.

(d) none of the above

If there are other questions you would like to add, please do so.

Ok I'll give this a shot  :h:
His first name is Joe
He's probably late 40's
I think he's divorced with 1 daughter named Emily
His office screams single and staying that way
The boys are horsing around in this scene and about to make love and
that's what Aguirre sees
I'm not sure if he delayed going up there to tell Jack
about his uncle
He didn't say anything right out but I think he kind of hinted around to Jack by looking at Ennis through the binoculars.
I think he said that to Jack when he came back a year later because he was mad at him for messing around with Ennis when they should have been doing their jobs. I guess he was being more of a hard headed business man more than anything.   :s:

Possibly late 30s to 40s?

I thought the same thing!  ;)

I felt that Aguirre went up there to relay the news to Jack about his uncle.  But I also think that he took the opportunity to spy on them right before he got to camp.

The binoculars was (for me) a hint to Jack that he could see what was going on from far away -- implying that he possibly/probably saw what they were doing...

1. - Joe
    - Between 40 and 45
    - Probably single
    - His office is like him : to much tidy !
2. -Jack and Ennis playing like two teenagers
-Aguirre sees "Jack and Ennis making what he would like to do !"
-Because he wanted to observed them more and more through his binoculars
    -Because he is pervert
    -????
3. -Homophobic but more gay as he think !  >:D

;D Interesting questionnaire , but I never found Aguirre interesting.

I am happy enough with Jack's answer: "F@#! Aguirre!"

I think the guy is just a miserable SOB who hates to see other people happy because he thinks no one deserves to be happier than him. And he is just plain miserable.

There are real people like that and I just pity them and stay far away.  :h: :h}

Joe   :*(
Probably 40-45? He looks older than my dad and he's 48...
His office is a 'typical room of a boring human'
I think he's divorced, don't have kids and is secretly gay. The ironic thing is that everyone knows.  ;D

Jack and Ennis 'playing'. Well, they might be kissing near the end, who knows.
He delays his action - maybe he wants some more scenes to watch  >:D
Well, he's gay so he's going to protect their secret, as 'well' as his.

I think it's a combination; the more homophobic you are, the more clueless about your own sexuality

1a. Joe (I  tried to find another name fitting, but I couldn't...)
1b. Above 45
1c. Married, wife named Betty, quiet little person spending her free time crotcheting, he calls her "Betty, why the hell......", no children.
1d. A "decent" man working hard to make money for living and he has to suffer all those empty-headed, ungrateful cowboys who always kill/get lost/let coyots eat etc. Aguirre's sheeps...

2a. I see boys whose relationship is getting closer
2b. Aguirre sees all before and after ;) When they start making love, he stops watching and with a sigh he sits on a stump to wait.
2c. To avoid arriving when they're making love - in a sense that he is just again confused and disappointed by his workers and this confirms his attitude that nowadays all young people are worthless (sigh again). It's his personal burden to manage with such hopeless employees, and nothing can be done with that, he just has to live with it.
2d. "The binoculars was (for me) a hint to Jack that he could see what was going on from far away -- implying that he possibly/probably saw what they were doing..." - I agree with that , so - in a way - he did let him know what he had seen.
2e. No talent ;)

3. I agree with rimasworld that Aguiree was first of all a tough businessman, who has seen a lot in his life and was bored (blase?) and believed that nothing could surprise him.
