One intersting thing that I've seen mentioned that foreshadows the crux of their relationship occurs on their walk to the bar. It is so telling that Jack strides to the bar, while Ennis shambles along behind. Jack is the leader, Ennis is the somewaht relutant follower.
-
I noticed that their paces are perfectly synchronized,
I don't know if this is the right word,
like in a military march.
-
Interesting thread, if we consider the glances they had for each other at the beginning. Jack shaving and looking at Ennis from the mirror of his truck... Ennis glancing at Jake in the trailer ::)
Can't wait to see what the other members will have to say.
Thanks for posting!

Interesting remark. Now that you mention it, Jack does seem to be Ennis's leader, right up to the first tent scene...

It stands out stronger and stronger with each viewing. A stark and deliberate statement by Ang of the relationship at onset. Does anyone think it changes at some point?

Jack first introduced himself, found him four years later, and walking to bar.....I doubt if Ennis has ever been to one so Jack had to take the lead.
-
Ethan - I think so as well. Jack had to take the lead, Ennis wouldn't. He was a little backward that way. Jack still had to take the lead, even in the first tent scene. In fact anytime, it seems as if Jack is the leader.
-
Ang Lee is intelligent, it can't be just a coincidence. I have seen it twice and the second time, this scene was one that I really been thinking about afterwards. Their cowboy-posture-ish walk is also a bit fun to look at. And of course, Jack takes the lead...as always... in fact, the whole time towards the tent scene is like a long Jack-flirtation scene. I didn't see that the first time I saw it, but the second it was so clear. Ang Lee is so subtile... which makes me wanna go and see it again!

good point, Miss Nice.

Only one time I can recall when Ennis took the initiative is when he entered the tent - the most romantic 2nd tent scene. But then again, once he was in the tent, Jack took it over. ;)

I agree that Jack takes the lead. However, I think Ennis has more "control" in the relationship. It's pretty much on his terms, them not living together, when they can meet etc. Jack can't see him as much as he would like because Ennis either can't or won't make more time. I think most of us agree that Jack would have redlined it to live with Ennis permantly if Ennis said he was ready. So while Jack was the leader and more outgoing he let Ennis have the reins.

ok, they went to the bar after the hiring scene with Joe Aguirre. They were going to be trucked to the jump off the NEXT morning.
Where did they spend the night?

In Jack's truck, Jack was sleeping. Ennis was smoking one cig after another... where did I read this ???
Brain overload maybe? Old Cham is due for some sleeping I guess.

I'm sure I read this... somewhere on the forum about cut scenes. Yes!

Good point, Luv. Ennis's decisions counted a lot, but Ennis almost let other people make those decisions for him, don't you think ? He remembered what his father had shown him when he was 9 years old.

not a psych major but doesn't that qualify as "passive - aggresssive" behavior?

>>not a psych major but doesn't that qualify as "passive - aggresssive" behavior?
Hi
I'm not sure if you could classify Ennis as passive-aggressive, as he often was just aggressive, i.e getting into physical/verbal confrontations. Or do you mean passive-aggressive specfically in the context of his relationship with Jack?
I too think the walk to the bar was very telling of the relationship and how it developed, with Jack taking the lead and Ennis following hesitantly behind. It also felt to me as though Ennis was already unsure of Jack and his feelings for him and worried about walking next to Jack but I could be wrong! It would've been nice to have some kind of intro into this scene, i.e the two of them deciding to go for a drink together - or is this one of the deleted scenes mentioned?
-
In his relationship with Jack I think Ennis exhibited some degree of passive agg. behavior. Maybe because he was guarding his true feelings for Jack. I think some of us do that when we are so smitten/in love with some one else in order to protect our feelings/ourselves.
And yes Ennis was capable of violence IN ORDER to protect those he was in love with.
The tragedy of their relationship is that the thing Ennis MOST feared might happen happened anyways. I think Ennis could have protected Jack and himself when danger was around or died trying and take them (perpetraters) down with him.

In the trailer, Jack voice says "since we're going to be working together, I reckon it's time we start drinkin' together" .

We should also keep in mind that it was Jack's second year and he knew everything around quite well. SO he takes the lead not only because he is a leadre but also because he knows where the bar is.

I kind of thought the same thing. Between his age and lack of money I thought Ennis had probably never been to a bar. I did't notice, if Jack paid for the drinks. Notice that Jack is the one who brings the alcohol to BB. Think of Ennis in waiting outside of Acquirre's trailer with all his earthly possessions in a paper bag. That's why I wonder later where the horses always come from. In the story Ennis has horses and works weekends for their keep, if I remember right. I don't understand how he ever afforded them. In the movie the horses vary from scene to scene. I also have to laugh that he transports the horses in the back of his truck. I never saw that before. Didn't know a truck could do that. Sorry I got off the track. I am a horse owner. - Nancy

This scene really drives home the extent of Ennis' emotion and passion. He looks around quickly and can't control himself - right in the center of town!!!!!! So out of character!!!!!!! That is the extent of his love!!! Later when Jack comes to see Ennis following his divorce, they are out in the middle of nowhere and Ennis is still looking around to see who might spy them. -Nancy

Ther is a term for letting a horse have the reins. It is called giving him his head! Isn't that funny????? - Nancy

I agree with you. Ennis was one tough guy. I think he could have protected them. Think about that firework scene. Was he macho or what? - Nancy

In the book Ennis has a brother in Signal, doesn't he? So he might have known the town too. Maybe we can view it as Jack takes the lead, sets the momentum of the relationship, so to speak, but Ennis sets the parameters of the relationship. Neither one knew where it was headed, but each had their role, each a leader in their own way. What a huge amount of love they had for each other.

I think Ennis was reluctant to go to the bar with Jack after their first meeting because he was BROKE! He was so broke at the beginning of the movie he only smoked HALF A CIGARETTE and then saved the rest.
Notice in the bar scene Ennis had one beer while Jack had two or three. I think Ennis was too shy/embarrassed to say he didn't have much money and that is why he lagged behind Jack on the walk to the bar.

THis is interesting. I had never thought of this. It is certainly plausible. Ennis had everything he owned in the bag he carried. That is telling...

That makes a lot of sense, and Tpe's comments about bringing everything Ennis owned in a grocery paperbag just re-inforce it. Don't forget Ennis had to do hitchiking to get to Signal while Jack had a truck (I know beaten but still... had one)

In the story they both drove to Signal in their trucks. I think Ang chose to have Ennis on foot in the movie to emphasis his poverty.

Yes and if you will remember in the story Ennis' truck broke down when he was 14 or 15 years old. I am sure at that age he had no money to get it repaired so he probably sold it.

Jack is almost always assured in social situations, eg he can dance and Ennis can't, he handles the LaShawn situation as well as anyone could ( given her nature!). I alwys see his walking to the bar first as his showing his self-assurance - he knows what to do, isn't worried by how to behave, whereas Ennis has little idea. It reflects Jack's greater experience - he's been away from home, travels the country later, settles down in Texas, while Ennis ends up where he began. Jack often leads him, but can never lead him far enough, literally or psychologically, to take him away from his Wyoming roots.
-
Jack is always in front when the two of them are traveling anywhere.
One of the cutest exceptions (OT) is following the mixed-up sheep herd fiasco, Ennis and Jack are riding side by side while Jack plays his harmonica, suggesting that they're in harmony at this stage and things are at a relatively smooth moment in their relationship .
-

This is a very lovely observation. Thansk you frances. He did finally seem to get to learn the tune he was playing at this stage, no? Initially, you hear only snatches -- he was still learning how to play it in the initial scenes. In this scene tyou refer to, the tune is apparently complete...
-
This is a cute scene, But I agree with Ennis here Jack's harmonica playing is SCARY. But he's proud of it though and that's what matters.
-
"Music hath charms" etc.? I think his playing was pretty awful but Ennis didn't.That's love. *o)
Jack is so often, as in the walking to the bar scene and from then on, the doer while Ennis is the follower or the admiring audience.Until of course FNIT.
-
Ennis might be quiet and shy, he knows a nice ass when he sees one .......Sweet. Smile.
-
Jack may have offered to buy Ennis a beer, since he probably figured that Ennis had little money. This then puts Jack in a position to find out more about this sexy guy he'd be workin with all summer. Jack does discover alot about Ennis in the bar that he himself could relate to.Rodeoing, being "ranch people", was he "run off" etc.... as well as giving Ennis a little insight into his own life. As far as Jack being Ennis's "leader"? Conversation wise, yes at that point. in the next scene Jac's "no philly can throw me" and "tying knots all day" comments did't endear himslf to Ennis at all.Ennis probably thought this guy's a "smartass" TOO sure of himslf. but Ennis knew better.
-
Something occured to me last night, when I was watching the bar scene. In the Thanksgiving scene, Ennis tells the girls he rode a bull once, and that was it,but when Jack asks Ennis in the bar if he ever rodeos, Ennis replies "once in a while, when I've got the entry fee in my pocket", and he also says, later on Brokeback, "I don't rodeo much, myself...", both those quotes imply that he'd done it more than once, if not frequently. It made me wonder if it was an early attempt by Ennis to make Jack like him,by pretending to be more interested in rodeoing than he actually was. Someone mentioned in another thread about Ennis ordering the soup, but pretending it was him, not Jack, who was sick of beans, how it was the sort of thing a teenager would do, and I thought the rodeo thing was kind of similar, like when the boy you like at school is into a particular band, or TV programme, and you pretend you like them too ;) ;D :-[
-
I'm writing from the wrong side of thepond, but I thought there were other things aside from bull-riding involved in rodeoing. In fact I was slightly surprised by the bull-riding sequences in the movie - I'd been expecting bucking broncos, more like the one on the Wyoming sign.I assumed Ennis had been doing things like that - he was evidently knowledgeable about horses and a better rider than Jack, though that may be an artefeact, since in reality Jake isn;t much of a rider and Heath is.
-
That's blown my theory out of the water then, hasn't it? I'm from the wrong side of the pond too, so that's my excuse for my total ignorance of all things rodeo :-[ I told you, I talk too much ::) :-[ :-[ :-[

I would have to go back and watch the movie, but I always thought Ennis was implying riding broncs not bulls. It takes a special personality to ride bulls from what I know of it and I doubt Ennis had that type of personality. I like your take on the rest of it CrimsonSky.

Ennis is completely taken with taking care of Jack at this point. I think it's why he is willing to trade places and go up with the sheep.

What you say, CrimsonSky, may be true but I just can not see Ennis exaggerating to impress Jack.
And Ennis told the girls of the time he rode a bronco. There is a difference between a bronco and a bull. One is a horse the other a male Steak.
-
So they do have bucking broncos in rodeos? You guys have a responsibi;lity to enlighten us ignorant Brits.
Still, i think Crimsonsky is right about the rest - while Ennis isn't the type to exaggerate or invent, he might well be glad to have some common ground with Jack - they're going to be spending a lot of time together.

Professional rodeos are held throughout the US and Canada, Mexico and some parts of South America.
There are many types of rodeo events, most involve the use of animals. The events are divided into roughstock events and timed events.
Rough stock events include: bull riding, bronc (horse) riding (either bareback or with a saddle)
Timed events include: barrell racing, pole bending (racing), cattle wrestling and roping (calf and steer) events
There are also many different professional rodeo circuits. The oldest and largest is the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) which runs over 700 rodeos per year. There are also amateur rodeos, rodeos for women, high school rodeos, African American (Black) and Native American rodeos and even a gay rodeo circuit.
-
So that's why Jack talked about not being able to afford a roping horse.
Thank you - that's all most enlightening. I knew about the gay rodeo circuit - the Canadians used in the movie were apparently part of it. Didn't know about all the other things - they all sound relatively dangerous.
-
Im sure rodeos are dangerous for those cowboys/girls participaing, but they are great entertainment for the people in the stands!!!!
-
If we could please go back the scheduled programm? Thanks!

At this early stage, he also seemed to have been a bit more withdrawn. He was probably very curious about Jack as a person, but he had to be drawn into a conversation while at the bar. The walk to the bar would seem to corroborate this, where he seems to be following Jack's lead and is yet keeping a safe distance...
-
I also wonder whether Ennis had ever been into a bar before. Methodists were't - maybe still aren't - keen on the demon drink. (My mother was a Methodist; she and her sisters signed the pledge before they weer in their teens, and none of the three was ever very keen on alcohol ever after, though in later life all three would have a drink on special occaions.) If Jack had been rodeoing, he'd have been in bars with other rodeo cowboys, presumably; anyway, Jack always seems more experienced in the ways of the world than Ennis. And he appears to have more money - could have been an issue for Ennis?

Interesting point. It looked that it was not his first time to have beer, no? It is difficult for me to imagine tht Ennis had never entered a bar, but then again, I am not a Methodist...
Ennis certainly appreared not to have had any money. I get the feeling that Jack treated him to a drink. Perhaps this also accounts for his trailing Jack when they were walking to the bar?
-
I'm sure ennis had drunk beer before; the most likely time would be when he was working with his brother, I'd have thought, but this needn't have been in a bar.In the ss Jack drank beer cooled in a wet sack ( ingenious!) as he ate the meal Ennis had cooked.
I'm a lapsed Methodist, if such a thing exists - very lapsed - and I can still remember the stress put on avoiding pubs and drink generally.

Ennis trailing behind Jack could also indicate that he was unfamiliar with Signal. Jack had been there before, and knew the right places.
If Ennis never went to bars, then he would certainly not have known the way, even if it was not his first time being in Signal.
Ennis was probably not yet a lapsed Methodist at this point, no? I am not really sure. But if he was still practicing, then he must not have been particularly observant. The same with Jack -- he didn't strike me as an observant Pentecostal. And I don't know what Pentecostals think about drinking. ;)

The way Ennis and Jack went after the beer in the bar and the whiskey on the mountain I am sure those were not their first drinks.

Well, they don't seem to have much problem with them do they? So I guess their mothers' influence, if any, has been long forgotten. Ennis isnlt the sort to make the running in any situation involving Jack - this scene just prefigures what comes later.
I guess you might see Jack as leading Ennis into temptation?

I don't think either of the boys were particularly religious. Jack says his mom is a pentacostal and not that they are/were and Ennis says my folks was Methodist and not we were Methodists or I was raised Methodist. Don't sound like either one included themselves in any religion.
