ENNIS wrote a short card and the movie showed it clearly and what it said could be easily read under
DECEASED. What did it say? I was so emotional that I could not take it all in.... thanks, Michael

I did not know you could see it :'( oh my that's another thing i have to pay attention to...do we see DECEASED on it? :'(
The only postcard i know is the one Alma asked Ennis about...

I haven't seen the movie yet, so exact wording is probably NOT correct but in the book it says that postcard referred to: November still looks like it is the first chance to get away.
Ennis sent it to confirm that he was still coming, and would meet Jack in november for one of their trips. After the fight they had because Ennis couldn't get any time off in August--he was just making sure Jack was still coming too, that is the reason for the postcard in the first place.

Just came back from my 4th viewing. On the postcard that was returned to Ennis, "Deceased" is clearly marked. There is something written on the postcard. I was too emotional to actually read what message was. Maybe someone can answer this question or I will pay close attention to my possible 5th viewing.

Sadly the postcard didn't reach the receipient. If you really think about it, Jack and Ennis didn't really have too much contact when they were seeing each other. Ennis's got no phone at all.
Postcards just seem to be a bad idea because their wives could read what they wrote.
Just came to my mind. :)

it says that it was a postcard that ennis sent to jack, that came back in the mail to ennis stamped deceased.

They sent postcards cause it was the cheapest easiest way to communicate.
You have to pay the phone bill, and have a phone, and on some the ranches Ennis was on, that could have been a hardship. And Jack's wife controlled the money---hence she read the bills.
Besides---they never said anything but dates and times for "fishing trips" on any of them--so they were pretty safe----and out in the open like truth is the most perfect disguise.
Nobody's wives bother about fishing and hunting trips between buddies---mostly they are just glad they don't have to go themselves. (voice of experience there)

The fish are jumping report is correct. I saw it clearly the second viewing..like most, I was too upset to read it the first time. BY THE WAY, have you noticed how the BM website has different handwriting on the postcard? Disastrous...really a mistake!

When I saw 'Decesased' marked on the postcard, I at first thought it was a mistake so I wasnt upset at that point. I thought that when Ennis was ringing uo, I thought he'd get through to Jack...
Part of the reason I thought this was that I'd been thinking it was Ennis that was going to die because:
When Ennis says his shirt is missing as they are leaving BBM, I realised Jack had taken it to remember him by - maybe this would be referenced later (which it was but for a different reason!)
But also, when Jack drove off from Ennis leaving him for the first time and Ennis ducked into the alleyway, retching and doubled over, I thought he had some illness that he'd later die of. I didnt get that it was his bodys way of dealing with the feelings he'd been repressing or the confusion he was suffering over the rights and wrongs of his feelings.
Its interesting how I assumed some things like that - I definitely need to see it again!

It also states a date : 7th of November I think...it does go quickly, and today, by the time Ennis got the card and turned it over..Froggy was in tears! ;D

One thing I did not understand about that returned "deceased" postcard... Why the heck would it have come back like that? Wouldn't Lureen have gotten it? They lived in the same place, they would've just kept delivering his mail to her address and let her deal with it. What did she do, return it to the post office and tell them to mark it "deceased" and send it back? If she did that, how COLD and BITCHY is that?!

Well no, it was brought up on another thread. Back then they used to send mail back when someone died as a courtesy to family, so they wouldn't have to tell everyone. So this is not out of reality.

Ahhh...it's so sad.
I would wonder if they were tempted to call each other at times.
In the short story I know it's that Ennis called Jack about the divorce adn
then Jack misunderstood and drove down. in the movie it's a card.

It's interesting finding an old thread, and then learn something new. I never thought about the postcards, thinking it's just the way they did things in the old rural days, when ranchhands can't afford to pay dearly for a landline that they hardly ever use, and before they had cell phones. :)
But why did they not write longer letters? I think being the laconic cowboy, Ennis didn't need a piece of paper and an envelop. Even the postcard was too much territory to cover. His first reply back to Jack was "You bet." That's all needed said. I love the way he wrote the "u" in You. It was a definite smiley, like so glad to hear from you, and so happy to meet with you.
There is also the element of openness. Jack and Ennis definitely want to keep the content to seem innocent, and as you said, out in the open, truth is the best disguise...little do they know that the boys don't go up there to fish... ;) well, Alma knew, but she peeked.

I'll bet after the movie, every wife and girlfriend will wonder, what DO you boys do on boys night out? Well, here's a clue if the "fish are jumping". >:D Seriously though, I guess it's what a marriage is about, trust. Wives trust their husbands on these boys night out, and husbands in turn trust their wives on their girls night out. What's tragic in Brokeback Mountain is that the true love is forced into telling lies by the circumstances of the time.
I never thought much about that "fish are jumping" until reading it here. That's Ennis way of saying to Jack the same as what Jack said, "Sometimes I miss you so much, I can hardly stand it." :( Them boys don't say much but they sure get their point across.

Is that postcard in the closet NOT one of those he received from Jack? I always thought that gives more meaning to his little caress with his thumb, like the way Jack used to caress his ear when he was upset by the river. Ennis was growing emotionally to become more like Jack, with the shirts reversed, becoming Jack's protector and comforter.

Sorry, dude, didn't mean to make you cry, or bring on PBS to anyone again. I just love the movie to bits, and every detail has so much meaning and power for me. I'd like to think Ennis kept all the postcards Jack ever sent. It's like the way he mouthed every word on that first postcard, savoring the pleasuring of the reunion, and smiling the whole time. I can't imagine him throwing out 'em messages of love...
