Just came back from my 4th viewing of this movie. I could not remember who said to whom. I think it was Jack.
What did Jack say to Ennis before they had the first sex?
-
I only heard '' It's ok.. It's ok ''
-
I only heard '' It's ok.. It's ok ''
Isn't it what Jack said to Ennis in the second tent scene?
-
huh :-\ maybe, I should go watch this movie again it becomes confusing :-[

"I swear" I heard something and it was very short. Maybe I will go for the 5th time.

Screenplay has Jack only saying "It's allright" twice.

"It's all right" is from the greatest love scene of all. That along had my heart melted.
borger1582, you have a copy of the screenplay? If so, I will take your words. :)
-
Actually, I have the book "From Story to Screenplay" (get it at Amazon.com or BN.com) which includes what I belive to be the shooting screenplay - although that doesn't mean the actors and/or the director did not embellish! And I didn't mean for my post to sound "definitive." In my three viewings of the film, after reading the posts, I believe only Jack speaks in that scene, and says "it's allright."

i heared Jack saying "it's alright" two times.. but didn't Ennis say "i'm sorry" first followed by Jack's "it's aright"?!!
i'll try to go see it again tomorrow and listen very closely..
-
I saw it the third time last night and Ennis does mutter something in the first scene, in the book it's like "what are you doing?" so it might be that.
In the second, doesn't Jack say come here, very softly before "its alright" and then Ennis says that when they reunite later too, very quietly before the famous throw against the wall...

I think Jack says "it's allright, it's allright" in the second tent scene.
But I *know* Ennis says "what are we doin'?" in the first tent scene - it's after Jack takes off his jacket and I remember hearing it the first time and falling more in love with Ennis' character, cause he just sounds like a sleepy, horny, drunken boy who's looking for a little direction after being "rudely" awakened. Almost as if he's letting Jack call the shots...;)

Yeah that's a good way of putting it, he was "acting" freaked out, but was interested.

Yes, I believe this is correct.
On the first tent scene, Ennis said to Jack: What're you doing?
Also, both the short story and the screenplay point out that in this scene, Jack took one of Ennis' big hands and placed it on his (i.e., Jack's) groin (Proulx uses the more graphic word, I believe.)

"What're you doing?" - is this on the screenplay?
Proulx's short story does use a more direct word. Like the rest of short story - fast pace and cut to the point but at the same time leaves ambiguity for interpretation.
-
In the first tent scene I listened tonight carefully. It sure sounds like he says groggily "What are you doing?" Just after Jack takes off the sherpa jacket.
-
I just saw it again last night and all I could hear was "it's OK", from Jack, and the grunts and groans. In the book, Jack mumbles, "Guns going off"
You know Jack wears his heart on his sleeve, but Ennis keeps his deep inside him. Alma and no one else can get to his heart, except Jack. Jack knows the direct route to bring Ennis quivering to his knees in a flash. I think it hurts Jack when he does it but he can't help it. When Ennis is in emotional pain is the only time that Jack knows how Ennis feels.

Hi brokebackmountain. Yes, it is in the screenplay.
I think in the original story, Jack takes Ennis' big hand and wraps it around his...
One can't be more precise than this!

quote TPE:

TPE.. Your graphic description of "Ennis' big hand" makes me truly melt!
-
no two ways about it, i ain't foolin' and i ain't jokin' :-))
it was the SECOND tent scene.
and ENNIS says 'i'm sorry' TWICE
followed by JACK saying 'it's alright.'
-
Well when i saw the movie i heard something like What are you doing he said it twice before jack start taking off his pants
-
"what are you doing" is also what I heard.
-
I heard (too!):
First scene: Ennis (bewilderd & still groggy from sleep & drink):"What ya doin'?"
Second scene:(Ennis whispering to Jack twice, VERY softly:) "I'm sorry"
"I'm sorry" (This is barely audible...but, perk up your ears and watch/read his lips and you will see!)
Jack: "It's all right..."
me thinks: Ennis is:
1- sorry for being so 'cool' to Jack the following morning while getting his horse ready, after that first night in the tent together...
2- sorry for being so silent about the whole situation...not giving-in to his true feelings...not accepting Jacks 'warmth'...denying the fact...
3- sorry for saying: "It's a one shot thing we got goin' on here"...while knowing that he wants more...
4- sorry for implying that Jack is a queer (in the previous scene...) Jack: "You know I ain't queer. Me neither."...
5- sorry now, for not crawling into the tent on the second night along with Jack...making Jack wait alone in the tent for him...while he sits outside next to the fire...(Jack still not knowing if Ennis will follow him into the tent...)
me thinks: Jack says: "It's all right..."
In which he means:...I understand how hard (and new) it is for you...come here...it's all right...I understand how difficult it is...you're forgiven...it's all right Ennis...

Listening to it right now... (recorded it in the theater)
1st tent scene: Ennis mumbles once, "What are you doing?" (all slurred together so it sounds more like "Wha'doin'?) Even though these are the only words in this scene, there's still a lot of "communication" going on! :P :P :P
2nd tent scene: I love the idea of Ennis saying "I'm sorry" -- it would add so much to this scene, but I only hear Jack saying "It's all right" three times (which also agrees with the screenplay). But, that's just my opinion... :)
-
I think Ennis doesn't say anything. Jack says tree times "that's allright", or two times "I'm sorry" and then "that's allright".
-
Oh, I have subtittles...
00:33:36,480 --> 00:33:37,780
It's all right
236
00:33:40,580 --> 00:33:41,880
It's all right
237
00:33:42,910 --> 00:33:44,780
Lie back. Come on
I can't hear the third one, but maybe he says so...
I can't watch this movie again... I don't understand what is happening with me... I just can't stop thinking about them and this 4 days I live with this movie and pics, and trailers and soundtracks...
What can I do... :\'( :\'(
This is the greatest love story.
Somebody HELP
