I just saw the film again and something caught my eye...see what it is?
-
The tatoos?
Yes, I did find that a fascinating detail. Is there more to it? Hmmmm...
-
The black hat like Jack's one? lol
-
In the pic, he seems to ba a vague doppelganger of Jack, no?
-
First thing that flashed through my mind when I saw the tattoos on that body was " thats not a woman" ;)

How interesting.
Esme, this thread intrigues me more and more...
-
How interesting... Those tatoos... aren't they anachronistic ? Did people do that in the 1970's or 80's ?
And if she isn't a she, then that couple is.... :o
-
I think it's a women, but.. the tatoos.. It's looks like a kind of devil with horns

It vaguely looked like a coiled dragon to me, but I can't see that well from the pic.
The light and shadow on the other guy's face is disorienting. From the pic, you get a creepy feeling that it's Jack.

after seeing it last night, I can assure you this person is a woman, and judging by her waistline she is of first nation decent, she looked more like a biker chick but there is more to this scene than one would think, such as pointed earlier about the black hat and as to why the emphasis on the back side of the woman's tattoo, surely one would have to try deciphering the tattoo's meaning to understand it's message, back in the late seventies and early 80th the repressed men in isolated place such as my own hometown would couple up with anything that had breast and legs a you know that V thing, no offense intended to woman in general, but it was a show of machismo and often cover-up their true sexuality, once the night had dwindled down and they had been toss to the curb by their female counterpart, they would often gather at some cabin to do the nasty, then deny it ever occurred the next day, I have witnessed this many time in those days, just keep your mouth shut and all be fine otherwise you'll regret it tremendously if you ever spoke of these instances. those were the times. hypocrisy at its best

I agree it probably is a woman, but had to pause it to see it when I got home. Thay don't look any more comfortabel than Ennis does...

Very fascinating frenchcda, at least to me.
A bit OOT, but did anyone not keep their mouth shut? Did such a thing occur and what happened?
Hypocrisy is a viable defense mechanism, for sure.

*Shudders* To be honest, I get chills whenever I look at the man she's dancing with.
It's almost as though he knows something we don't.

I'm sure that this happens in many areas of our society. Perhaps that's why those alleged str8 men are so adverse to seeing the movie. It hits to close to home?.................. I know, OT. Sorry. :-[

Well it happened once back it 1990 after a three year affair between this tuff dude and some else, that person was leaving town due to a relocation due to work, so 2 days before he left they, the gang decided to give a farewell party for the dude that was leaving, at the party the Tuff guy got drunk ans spilled the beans on the dude that was leaving telling all the people there about their affair, note: the previous night they had been together and had a huge fight about his departure and the Tuff guy wouldn't let go, he had acted so much in ways Ennis would have acted, nothing said nothing to fear, but that evening at the party all hell broke loose, and it wasn't pretty, as for the consequences, well one person committed suicide a few weeks later, another person died of a heart attack, the tuff guy lost his wife and kids, and the dude well he moved far far away and never returned, despite keeping in touch with the Tuff guy, he would have none of it, the beans had been spilled over and out and the ramification were devastating to the Dude for he did love the Tuff guy, but the later one waited way to long to render his decision. You might find it a bit confusing, but I don't mention any manes, I still have honor in their privacy. they are a few situation of sort that have surfaced over the past or more specifically in my youth where I observed instances of such magnitude, looking back at it, I now realize where I got my education in dealing with relationship. I could easily write a all tell book on it, but that would be unfair, for too many have now past away, better leave it to the dead in telling their story to the winds of time and for me to reflect upon as I grow old and Grey!

All I can say is wow. What an amazing story. There is nothing stranger than reality.

Well BBBoy wait and see in about a year I hope to have a novel out and in print if I do well past this latest endavour, it will be based partially on experiences I have witnessed and partially of my own, BUT it will not go on as a memoir just a fiction based on experiences.

God.
I understand the need to keep names private. It's sad. Really sad.

Sliiiightly OT guys :)
-
I did find the tattoos kind of odd for that time. I couldn't think of a reason for it, though.
-
Sorry Esme. :)
I forgot when I first noticed the tattoos. I don't think it was on first viewing. And as bram said, I am not sure there is a particular reason for it. It is an interesting detail, nonetheless.
-
I think I did notice them on my first veiwing, but I'm really into tattoos.
-
Me, too, and when I lived in California, tatoos were popular in the early 80s and the norm by the 90s; that said, the extent of the tatoos on the woman's back seems to me very unusual for that time and place!

I agree and yet can't help thinking that Ang Lee had a reason for including the lady in the scene. I have yet to decipher it though. Maybe as a counter point to the attractiveness of Cassie? I just don't know.
-
I talked to a friend about this and he said that initially tatoos were more popular with the redneck, outback communities and that later body art went main stream! Any ideas about this?

You are probably correct here.
In one of Proulx's stories in 'Close Range', wasn't there mention of tattoos on some of the women protagonists?
I am trying to recall. Correct me if I am wrong here...
If this is correct, perhaps they got the idea of the tattoo in this scene from Proulx herself???
-
Good point, Tpe! I'm now reading Proulx's other stories so I'll keep my eye out for any mention of tatoos.

Thanks Stephen! I would certainly want to check this out... The detail looks too special to be a fluke...
-
I wonder if there are any "fluke" details in the film that Ang Lee is not aware of! I'm still wondering what he wants us to make of the carved cowboy on horse on Jack's desk. There was a thread about this but no real conclusions....and there must be many other little details we've not exhausted yet!
-
I am quite surprised though that we missed this detail for so long -- until now. It is quite fascinating... And you are right Stephen -- there are probably few -- if any -- details that my be regarded as a fluke (I am almost convinced that the crosses in the beginning scene were a surprising coincidence -- just maybe...)
-
Yes, Tpe, I agree about the crosses, but of course can't be sure; it's easy to over do the symbolism bit; but then again, if it works, even by accident, then it works!

I have hesitated posting here because I cannot remember the source of the information, but...
I read that there are a lot of redneck bikers in Wyoming working the oil fields..roughnecks. Where there are bikers there are biker chicks and MANY of them are covered in tattoos.
-
That sounds right by the info. I'd heard! Thanks for the input. I think I can rest now concerning the tatooed woman!
