Gosh..I wonder what the life span of your DVD will be. And if you do, how long will it take you to finish the entire DVD?  :P

I'll tell you the toughest part I'll have watching.....when Ennis goes to Jack's room, that was so tough to watch!

I don't think I'll be doing that at first- I'll be too caught up in the movie. However, later on, that reunion kiss will be replayed and slo-mo'ed. I will freeze on "the look" from Jack in the flashback scene.

I'm gonna focus on the second tent scene--can't wait to get the dialogue straight for myself, especially after seeing Esme's "Your thoughts after watching the DVD" thread above.  :)  Ahh--bliss!!  I am so excited!!

My second time watching, I watched it on freeze-frame through the entire reunion kiss scene. I watched it frame by frame. Some of the looks that Jake has on his face as Heath pushes him back are incredible! A sense of shock, almost fear even... happiness, yearning. Oy! Watching every frame like that in slow-mo can almost be more intense than in regular play!

BTW, stunt double doing Jack's jump...Jake was away for two weeks.  He was probably promoting one of his other movies.

Just a recommendation, but after watching the DVD the first time through, I turned on the subtitles and watched it again.  I picked up alot of subtle dialog that I didn't hear previously.  I would recommend this for all.

I froze, then zoomed and then slo mo'ed "the look" from Jack in the flashback.*SIGH*

I didn't think I was going to pick and choose scenes so early on but I had some dialogue to listen to in other scenes. I think I will play the reunion kiss in slo- mo later on. I'm really liking having the dvd!  :)

Subtitles and closed captioning are notoriously not accurate.  Sometimes the sentence is too long and would fil; the screen so they shorten it and sometimes people talk too fast so they shorten what they say.  Subs and CC do not capture the faintly heard words as they have no time to go over and over a scene to try to capture the words.

I mentioned on another thread how much I like the moment when Jack turns toward Ennis in the motel scene right after he says "I redlined it all the way." The part I have to pause on is just as his smile breaks out fully and his dimple shows. What I wouldn't do to have that directed at me!

Replay over and over again:

the second tent scene as edited for the DVD so it starts when Ennis wakes up with hangover and shame after their first night till the very end of their embracing in the tent.  :'(

Ennis waiting for Jack's arrival, the reunion kiss and everythig that follows till the end of the first reunion on BBM, this caress from Jack to Ennis  :'( :'(

(https://ennisjack.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi63.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh137%2Fchameau_7%2Fbbm1008.jpg&hash=2066c680ad95262d1048d53bf98e94fe71772c09)

Finally, last encounter on BBM till the very end of the movie, I could watch over and over again  :'( :'( :'(

Is this masochism?

That is the scene I couldn't WAIT to watch in slo-mo, and it didn't disappoint.  God, it is so fantastic to see all their facial expressions and how they hold each other, and who is touching who....so wonderful.

I agree, NoReins, about the nuzzle.....be stil my beating heart!  It is gorgeous.  I love that, and the way you can see Ennis take Jack's hand off him but still touch Jack one more time, with both his hands.

The other scene I replay and use slo-mo for is SNIT.  I love watching Ennis, and how he reacts to Jack touching his face.....

and then they lie down and THE KISS!!!! Wow.  It is worth paying for the DVD just for that.

I do have to play it at normal speed again after watching it in slo-mo, though, cos I love the music and the whole sound of the scene.

I'm going to be wearing out my remote, never mind my dvd, at this rate.

I tried slo-moing the motel scene to see if I could find any clothes, like as it zoomed in quick. No luck :P But, of course, the FNIT, SNIT, and the reunion were rewound continuously. I also love the part where they've been having the affair for a while, and right after a confrontation, they're sleeping in a tent, Ennis has him arm draped over Jack. Aww...that's definitly a pause scene for me :D

After months of not wanting to watch this scene, as it was so painful, I again watched it. I felt one of the most devastating scenes was Ennis visiting Jack's parents and offering to take Jack's ashes to Brokeback.  John Twist's line is 'like most of Jack's ideas--never come to pass'.

Health Ledger, as Ennis, does an amazing job of reacting to this statement.  His countenance, his lips, his throat all bind up in hurt.  Jack's mother rescues him from this reaction with the offer to let Ennis go up to Jack's room.

Then when Jack finds the shirts and takes them off the nail, he is almost frozen in his love for Jack.  He hugs the shirt, then tries to recapture the smell of Jack in that shirt.

That's hard.

WARNING!!!  NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED!!!

I tried to watch Jack's death scene in slow motion to see if it was Jake in that scene.  Big mistake.  Very painful to watch and very gruesome.  You litterally see blood gush out of Jack's mouth.  It made me cry and I was nearly traumatized by it and I'm not easily traumatized.  Maybe it was because Jack was my favorite character and I actually felt very protective.  I'll never watch that scene again in slow motion.  Yes, it was Jake and not a double.   :P :( :\'(

A much better scene to watch in slow motion is the reunion kiss scene.  Seeing Jack's face changes from happy to confuse to concern was precious.  I find that I freeze and zoom in on Jack a lot through out the movie and I often replay the first 40 minutes of the DVD and "Dozy embrace".

I am almost traumatized just reading that- I finally watched Jack's death a few weeks back- I had never seen it in it's entirety before then- first viewing I looked away and then after that I knew when to turn away/close my eyes. But I got brave and watched it (about 9 months after the first viewing) and that really did me in. It's going to sound silly but i commend you for being brave enough to see it in slo-mo. I much prefer the reunion kiss in slo-mo- that almost makes you feel like your right there with them  ^-^

Thanks, LJN but I don't think I like to watch that scene at any speed.  Think I'll fast forward that scene form now on.

Indeed the reunion kiss is much funner to watch in slo-mo and yes I want to push them together much longer.  Poor Alma.  And the "Dozy embrace" is just so dreamy.

I did the same thing once. I just wanted to see the detail. And as horrible as it was, I have to say it was really well done. They could have made it kind of blurry since it was a quick scene and an image from Ennis's mind anyway. But Ang Lee put as much attention to detail here as he did everywhere else. Commendations again to Jake Gyllenhaal. The expressions, everything, were just amazing. And yes, it is very difficult to watch. And you know, Jack fought back.
That's all, I guess. This scene always kind of throws me...

Yes he did!  He actually kicked and fell that a**hole before another with the tire iron did him in.  If it was a fair one-on-one fight, Jack would have beat the crap out of him, but no, it was three (with weapons) against an empty-handed Jack, and they attack him from behind.  I do agree it was well made but painful to watch.  I still get a surge of anger and sadness watching that scene.

SNIT in tent.

Definately one of my understanding of my many "Obsessions" (Tv Shows/Movies) he was doing all the "Zooming In and Out"  of the Tent Scene and also the "Reunion Kiss"

That was a Fun Friday Evening  :8 :cr) ^f^ &**) (:) ;D

When the DVD was released last year, I ordered my copy from tlavideo and got the wide screen version.  Then about six months later the dime store/Radio Shack in our little town had a sale on miscellaneous DVDs and there was Brokeback in the full screen version. So now I'm one of those fanatical Brokies with both versions.

I've heard arguments in favor of both, but prefer the full screen version. Especially for the tent scenes.   >:D

My own M.O. has been to watch the full movie alternately with selected favorite scenes: the trip up the mountain, FNIT, SNIT, the Reunion, motel scene, dozy embrace and the last two scenes.

Hi, I just heard about this site, and I wish I had known about it a long time ago. As for the topic, I didn't wait to Zoom in on scenes for the DVD. I recorded BBM on my HD DVR back in July of 2007. That was the first time I watched it. Well, after seeing it more than 50 times since then, I zoom in on the following scenes:
1. The first tent scene (I love the intensity and how sexy Heath looks)
2. The second tent scene. Love to see Heath kissing.
3. The reunion makeout of course.
4. when Ennis is introducing Jack to Alma. I love it that Ennis is breathing so heavy he can hardly speak.
5. When Ennis falls into Jacks arms crying when they saw each other for the last time.
6. I zoon in on what I think is the saddest scene in the whole movie. When Ennis is in the coffee shop, his pain is so intense and real, I want to feel like he feels, and that's when I completely break down.
7. Again like the coffee shop, when his daughter is talking about her wedding and he looks away, again choking up.

I agree it's hard to choose between wide and full screen, especially when slow mo'ing a scene, but the best to me is in the hotel. there are so many great moments to freeze and replay. Something in the full screen you can't see as well in wide is the fact that Ennis is holding on to Jack's arm; like he never wants to let go of him. Freezing his amazing facial expressions in this moment are great, but it really works best when you let it play and watch how Ennis' face and arm holding react to everything Jack says, everytime he shyly smiles in agreement, he also kind of shakes Jack's arm a little tighter. You've got to replay this, it's so sweet.

I think I have slo-moed/repeated every scene where Jack and Ennies interact, there looks/expressions often so fleeting tell a thousand words.
Plus Almas shock after the reunion kiss,
plus Lureen and Ennis on the phone speaking of Jacks Death,
plus  Ennis's breakdown after saying goodbye After 1st BB,
plus Jacks look in the rearview mirror, after same.
plus Jacks tears, driving away, after Divorce scene,
plus Ennis saying sorry to Cassie,
plus Ennis's tears at the courthouse divorce,
plus Ma Twists "you are welcome to go up to his room, if you'd like"
plus Ennis's far away look when asking Jenny if her B/friend loved her.

And of course the two 'gut punches......'finding shirts', and  "I swear............"

How the hell, did this director get these performances!
How the hell  did these actors  give these performances!

Simply Superb (Sorry now stating the obvious)

no need to apologize, bm. you are saying what everyone here has been thinking. I think it was a labor of love, a collaboration of all the people who love Ennis and Jack working together. And did you notice that all the scenes you named, had Ennis in it, whether in the background or part of the action.

Even as I read your words, and recalling and visualizing those images in my mind, I am still brought to tears.

I've got on my list

The opening scene where these 2 are obviously checking each other out trying to avoid each others eyes even in the trailer with sluggo on the phone they just cant seem to avoid looking at the other love it

Jack's rodeo dance because Ennis can no longer deny he is attracted to the Jackster :) and I love when Jack puts on a show

That entire FNIT I love slowing to the part where I could swear Jack turns to look at maybe his dream has come true that he's this close to Ennis and then smile? and the whole moving of the hand and the rest that follows O0

The SNIT the whole thing for all the obvious reasons

The horse play especially since it wasnt that long  :d)

Ennis checking out Jack on the horse he seems quite intrigued by him

The whole Reunion the hug, the shove into the wall the look on Jack's face which is priceless as Ennis does it (t)the whole clawing at each other gee how many times have i watched that

The final showdown when Ennis gets in Jack's face about Mexico because Ennis doesnt seem too please to know what Jack has been doing out of his line of sight

The dozy embrace

Those are all wonderful scenes. I think at one time or another, I have probably used the slo-mo feature on almost every scene, because different things strike me at different times and I want to see them again. And then of course, some are just favorites that I can never get enough of. Twisted made a video once of the DE in slow motion, set to the music that AP was listening to when she wrote the scene, and it is absolutely stunning.

And you know the most impressive thing of all to me? When you slow down any of these scenes, they are still the most beautiful things I've ever seen. So many films rely on the speed of a scene to get away with half rate efforts or hope that you don't notice the mistakes, and there is just nothing in this film that falls apart under scrutiny. Remarkable. :)
