Hong Kong goes for `brokeback'

HONG KONG — The gay love story "Brokeback Mountain" has spawned a new slang term in Hong Kong.
Newspapers in the Cantonese-speaking territory have started using the new term "dun bui," or "brokeback," to describe homosexual relationships — like the one depicted in the Oscar-winning film by Taiwanese-born director Ang Lee.
Ming Pao Daily News recently reported that male pop stars Leo Ku and Justin Lo held hands at a concert "brokeback style."
The slang's meaning seems to be expanding beyond homosexual themes to include relationships that are awkward or just aren't meant to be.
Apple Daily called a pair of politicians prevented from forming a party "obviously a brokeback couple." It was an apparent reference to the inability of the film's gay characters to shun social convention and become a couple.
Cantonese is famous for soaking up all kinds of slang. The language is spoken in Hong Kong, China's southern province of Guangzhou — formerly known as Canton — and in Chinatowns all over the world.
Gay activists are divided on whether the new term is helpful or harmful.

Wal-Mart Resists Pressure in 'Brokeback' DVD Sales

The culture war surrounding "Brokeback Mountain" may be nearing an end, but as the film was released on DVD last week, it found an unusual ally: Wal-Mart Stores.
On Tuesday, the retailer began selling "Brokeback Mountain" on DVD, over the objection of the American Family Association, a conservative religious organization based in Tupelo, Miss.
Wal-Mart had previously agreed not to stock CD's bearing parental warning stickers and to cover up magazines like Cosmopolitan and Glamour with blinders.
Randy Sharp, the director of special projects for the American Family Association, is leading the charge against "Brokeback Mountain" with an e-mail petition urging Wal-Mart customers to shun the store in protest.
The association says it is not opposed to Wal-Mart offering "Brokeback Mountain" for sale. What it does mind is that Wal-Mart has promoted the movie by placing posters of its stars, Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, in the front of the store "where children can see them," Mr. Sharp said.
If "Brokeback" were a blockbuster, he said, promoting it would be understandable. But since it has not cracked the $100 million mark in domestic box office sales, Wal-Mart must be trying to "normalize" homosexuality, Mr. Sharp said.
Wal-Mart, which has added urban stores and Metro 7, a fashion line for young women, as part of its effort to seek a wider, more diverse customer base, says it is simply catering to popular demand. "We decide to sell films based on what our customers want, and we have a broad range of customers and a broad range of films," said Gail Lavielle, a company spokeswoman. "We are a retailer. We are in the business of meeting our customer's needs."
For his part, Mr. Sharp said he had not seen the movie. "I have read the reviews," he said. "I don't want to subject myself to that kind of content."

NORFOLK, Mass. -- A correctional officer faces punishment for showing the gay cowboy movie "Brokeback Mountain" to inmates at Massachusetts' largest prison, a corrections department spokeswoman said.
Massachusetts Department of Correction spokeswoman Diane Wiffin said the officer, whose name was not released, had not followed standard procedure for pre-screening the movie for excessive violence, assaults on correctional staff, nudity or explicit sexual content.
She would not reveal what discipline the officer could face.
"I want to make it clear, it wasn't the subject matter -- it was the graphic nature of the sexually explicit scenes," Wiffin said Monday.
The officer showed the movie Thursday at MCI-Norfolk, a medium-security prison about 25 miles southwest of Boston. According to Wiffin, a deputy supervisor came in as the movie was showing and asked if the officer had screened it first. He said no. Since only 20 minutes remained of the movie, the inmates were allowed to see the end, she said.
Wiffin did not know how many inmates saw the movie and did not know of any other instance in which a prison officer was disciplined over a movie.

(Hong Kong) The word 'Brokeback' has entered the Cantonese vocabulary. Translated as 'dun bui' it is showing up in newspapers and in advertising in Hong Kong to describe gay or non conventional relationships.
Although the film is officially banned in China it has been permitted in the former British colony and DVDs - mostly illegal copies - are being distributed throughout the country.
Recently the Ming Pao Daily News reported that male pop stars Leo Ku and Justin Lo held hands at a concert "brokeback style."
But "dun bui" also is being used to describe other types of pairings. The Apple Daily called two politicians who were prevented from forming a political party "obviously a brokeback couple."
While not implying they were gay, the word was used as a reference to the film's gay characters inability to shun social convention.
Cantonese is considered China's most "progressive" tongue, latching onto all kinds of western slang. It's adoption of 'brokeback' is believed to be the first time the word has been entered a language anywhere in the world.
Whether it is a positive step has divided Hong Kong gays.
Activist Cho Man-kit said the usage of the word has provided a vehicle to discuss homosexuality.
"Everyone wanted a means by which to discuss the homosexual issue without restraint, but there never was one," Cho told the Associated Press. "Once 'Brokeback' emerged, the intense desire to talk about gays was released."
But Roddy Shaw, another gay activist, disagrees. "It's devolved into a derogatory term." Shaw said.
The government of Hong Kong has been under pressure for more than a year to include sexuality in its human rights law.
Last month two legislators accused the government of hiding behind public opinion polls to stall on passing LGBT anti-discrimination legislation. (story) Polls show most people opposed to amending the law.
Last May a watchdog human rights agency condemned the Hong Kong government for dragging its heels.
In a report to the government Hong Kong Human Rights Monitor said that the semi-automatons city state is lagging behind the rest of the world.
The report was issued less than a week after the city saw its first gay rights demonstration. (story)

Second maybe but Kong is on third place and we cannot really compare with Narnia which is more a kid's movie and we all know how big is the market for that kind of films. BBM is doing very good.

We recently noted the Massachusetts Department of Corrections disciplining of an officer who screened Brokeback Mountain for inmates, a prison movie night no-no because of its graphic sexual content. So what films did make the extremely selective cut? According to the Boston Herald, such pacifistic entertainments as Get Rich or Die Tryin', which you may recall was blamed for a movie theater shooting death, and the mob mercenary/marital-rape-on-a-staircase thriller, A History of Violence:

[note: I've seen a history of violence and the sex is way more graphic than brokeback and of course there is a high level of violence in it as well. I guess a gay love story is much more problematic than violent rape.]

I think this chart reflects an estimate of all sales, web-based or conventional. Wal-Mart apparently doesn't reports its weekly dvd sales.
I just checked Wal-Mart's movie web page, where Brokeback is shown as 3rd on their best sellers page. Here's a link to that page:

'Narnia' vid roars in sellthrough debut

Buena Vista Home Entertainment's "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" easily topped the national DVD sales chart for the week ending April 9, while the previous week's top seller, Universal Studios' "King Kong," remained perched in the No. 1 slot on the video rental chart for the second consecutive week.
With first-day sales pegged at 4 million units, "Narnia" didn't have much competition for First Alert dominance. "Brokeback Mountain," another Universal title, finished a distant second its first week in stores, barely outselling third-ranked "Kong," which was still in high demand during its sophomore week out. Universal said "Brokeback Mountain" sold 1.4 million DVDs its first day in stores.
The release last week of a new two-disc director's-cut edition of "Crash," from Lionsgate, pushed the title to the No. 6 position on the DVD sales chart, even though it has been a month since the film's best picture Oscar win. An earlier single-disc edition has been available and was No. 12 the previous week.
The only other new release to make the First Alert top 20 is the complete third season TV-DVD of "Full House," from Warner, which debuted at No. 15.
On Home Media Retailing's video rental chart for the week ending April 9, "Brokeback" bowed at No. 2, with estimated rental earnings of $6.3 million, a tad shy of the $6.4 million earned by "Kong" its second week out.
"Narnia" debuted at No. 3, with rental earnings of $6.1 million.

‘‘Scary Movie 4” is proof, if any is needed, that ‘‘Brokeback Mountain” is cemented into the pop-culture pantheon.
This outing of the popular series spoofs such horror and sci-fi hits as ‘‘Saw,” ‘‘The Grudge,” ‘‘War of the Worlds” and ‘‘The Village,” as well as other cultural totems including ‘‘Million Dollar Baby.”
‘‘Brokeback” is in. But ‘‘King Kong,” which is featured in the poster, failed to make the cut.
‘‘We never shot a ‘King Kong’ joke,” director David Zucker said. ‘‘It’s true, ‘Brokeback Mountain’ did a lot less business, but it was talked about more. That’s what the studio is keyed into: What are the movies viable to be spoofed? The box office doesn’t matter as much as you think. Originally, we were going to do ‘Ring 2,’ but the audience rejected that.”
In ‘‘Scary Movie 4,” Anthony Anderson (‘‘The Shield”) and Kevin Hart (‘‘Soul Plane”) are cowboys who get into the now-infamous tent.

"In the closet?" She asked, more confused than before.
"No. To be in the closet, you have to be gay." He came back.
"He is gay." Abby stated as if she believed it to be fact.
"C. C. is gay. Diamond is on the down-low." John explained.
"Well if he's having anal sex with his friend he's gay." Abby seemed to not understand the difference.
"Not to him, he has a girlfriend. He just sort of gets down with his buddy for release." He answered, trying to clarify it.
"So down-low means denial?" Abby asked.
"Yeah, basically." John stated as they both went their separate ways.

WOW!! What do you have Frances, the script of every ER program!?!?! That is fantastic! Thank you so very much. Now, what does down low mean? LOL!!!! That was a sad segment of a good program. So, I guess Hart is telling he isn't in denial so watch out here I come then.

"Brokeback Mountain" Controversy, Possible Protests Await Larry H. Miller at U of U

When Larry H. Miller speaks at the University of Utah next Friday, it appears he may have several protesters waiting for him.
ABC 4 News has learned plans are now being discussed about possible civil action against Miller.
Next Friday, at noon, Miller will give a major speech at the university's student union.
But Miller may not be welcomed with open arms. Some students are still angry over Miller's decision not to show Brokeback Mountain at his movie theaters.
Appearing on this week's "On the Record", Miller said the negative reaction from some students is disappointing.
ABC 4 News has also learned Miller plans to meet with those angered students the day before his speech..
Trouble is, by then, protest plans may already be in place.
