Title: Colors on Brokeback mountain
Post by: coguaro on Apr 11, 2006, 05:19 PM
BBM have a great photography. In numerous scenes colors are important to give relevance to some character or some scene.. I guess

As an example thinking to Ennis and Jack at the beginning of the film there is a difference between their colors (I mean dress..): Ennis dress appears so opaque, faded and neutral (light brown jacked, creme hat) while Jack dress are intense blue and strong black (as his pickup!) and his image clearly emerge from the screen. That's difference may raprestent the Ennis attitude to.. conform to his ambient, his society (I mean to cancel his identity) and the opposite Jack attitude to distinguish itself, to be against rules

What do you think?

Hard to say.  The colors definitely contrast the two protagonists so well.  I had initially thought it was a question of aesthetics.  Ledger is lighter, with light hair and pale skin.  The pale, bolden browns and whites become him.  Gyllenhaal is relatively darker, with dark hair and darker complexion.  The deep blues, forest greens, and black make his features stand out with expressive clarity.

There could very well be symbolism here.  Ennis is certainly more pragmaticm so in this sense, he is more easily read.  Jack is of a darker, more romantic nature.  He is also  warmer.  There is a sense of shadow and shade about this romanticism.

Just a few thoughts...

Talking about colors, one things strikes me, it's the color of Jack's hat when he drives the tractor with Bobby : white!  It's the only time we see Jack with a non dark (or gray) hat.

Ive some curiosity about cowboy in the reality... anybody know if there is any mean in their hat color? Is there a difference between a white or a black hat or it's only a estethical choice?

Just to second pierralex's observation.  As a farm equipment salesman, his hat was white or light colored.

I've read something about a "cowboy code" somewhere here but can't remind where...

Ennis' light clothing suggest, to me, that he likes to "blend in". To not be noticable or to not stand out. He is so introverted, almost afraid of being seen. Jack is vibrant and full of life. Jack is comfortable with himself and not afraid to be noticed.

Someone pointed out elsewhere on this forum, too, that their wives are similar: Alma wears pale, neutral tones (in an interview, one of the costumers said they looked for clothing for Alma that suggested sadness, reticence, someone who stays out of others' ways), while Lureen always wears red.  She's got that red hat on when she first meets Jack, and she wears red lipstick and all those ugly rings when she has the phone call with Ennis.

I always think of Ennis and Jack's colors in association with times of day, too--Ennis wears pale colors and looks up the mountain at Jack during the day, while Jack wears blue and black and looks down on Ennis's campfire from the mountain at night.

Well all those post are really deep!!! i always watched the difference in colors between them and it is true Ennis and Alma try to blend themselves while Lureen and Jack they don't care to be noticed from the others and the colors shows it. Jack was more vivacious and didn't care to be noticed his back hat and his red and blue shirt say  it all while Ennis as we all agree used pale colors. Jack was a show off person he likes to be noticed as a great example he is a rodeo man also Lureen they like to showoff themselves.
