Hi!! ;D
Watching BBM AGAIN last night, something started jumping out at me. The number of times Ennis ends a sentence with Huh?
Don't know why, but that just kinda is humorous. It's just funny to me. Anyone else notice how many times he ends a sentence like that.
"Well that snow barely stuck an hour. Huh?"
"I don't need your money, huh, you know I ain't in the poorhouse. S***!"
And many more quotes out there like that. Just asking :)

This is not exactly a 'Huh?', but it is the same in spirit:
(In the 1st Tent Scene) 'What are you doin...'
-
I love the way that is uttered "what are you doin" Half drunk, half asleep, half stunned by what is going on. Very interesting to hear him say that also!! ;D
-
Another, more subtle, one.
You remember in the scene at the bar after seeing Aguirre? Jack tells Ennis that last year, lightning killed 42 (?) sheep. While Jack is saying this, Ennis makes a face that is the visual equivalent of 'Huh?'
I think you know what I mean...
-
What about the "ahdno" in response to Jack's "what about you?" question in the motel scene?
I have no idea how to put that in type - but it's kinda cute, especially when you think of the little smile that accompanies it!

And he says it again on their last time on the mountain - when Jack askes him if he hasn't found anyone else to marry, and Ennis tells him about Cassie and that she wants to go to a nursing school, and again finishes with this "ahdno". I thought it kinda reflected his difficulties to express himself... he's not very verbal, you know ;)

Another "Huh" in another angry Ennis'moment
Well that snow barely stuck an hour. Huh? 'Sides, that son-of-******, he's cheatin' us outta a whole month's pay. That ain't right.
I agree, Keren_b, about Ennis' difficulties to express himself...
Another example, the way he pronounces these words :
Bottom line is... we're around each other an'... this thing, it grabs hold of us again... at the wrong place... at the wrong time... and we're dead.

Contribution from karen_b:
"why don't you just let me be, huh? it's coz of you Jack that I'm like this... I'm nothing... I'm nowhere...
This is on the opposite side of the emotional spectrum...

Tpe, yes, I know exactly what you mean!! That's the non-verbal form of a "huh" right there. That look on his face is priceless!!
It's so interesting to interpret even the smallest words out there.

You're welcome :)
I just can't believe I pick out things like this in a movie. I guess when you watch it EVERY night after you get home from work, you start to notice the little things, lol.

I wanna see that look again. Damn you, amazon.co.uk :(

Ann you sound like me, lol. I saw it nine times in theaters (until in stopped playing in my area), and I've lost track of how many times I've watched the DVD.
Donna

Donna, you're lucky, they didn't play it in my area, small town, homophobic, full of rich old ladies mostly. so I had to wait till the DVD. So I've had the DVD for two weeks now and not a day has gone by that I haven't watched it!! lol.
YAY!! Now I have someone to talk about crazy little things to!!

Ennis says "huh" a lot.

So has anyone here been obssessed enough to have the total "huh" count?

No, but I find I'm starting to say it myself---totally out of character, but somehow bonding.

I actually have always used that expression... hee hee
-
I lovethe Ennis way to tell Huh.. I noticed that I used similar expression even bofere BBM!!! :o
-
Since this thread is under "The Movie & Story," I ask how many times did Annie Proulx's Ennis Del Mar say, "Huh?"
In real life, I had said, "Huh" (or "Hunh" same pronounciation for me), when I was caught of guard and responded that way. But, as soon as I said that, it registered in my brain what the person had said in the first place.
-
Those Huh are very irritating when I saw the DVD for the first time on Monday this week. Lamost spoiled the viewing. I had the English subtitles on and reading those Huh all the time were SO annoying. Next watch, I turned the subtitles off, and it helped a bit.
-

Funny -- I hadn't read this topic and had just posted my thing about Ennis's "huh" elsewhere. Fun that others have noticed this, also. But then, what haven't we noticed??
I don't have it with me, but I'll look for it later: a couple of the times I went to the theater I took notes (sloppy in the dark notes), and I think I got all of Ennis's huh's. I adore this. Well, I adore Ennis, and everything. And yes, I do the huh thing a lot myself. You've already mentioned "Snow barely stuck an hour, huh?" and "I don't need your money, huh?" And there's also "Want me to kick the rest of your !@#$ teeth out, huh?" Also, in the dozy embrace, it's a "hmm" instead of a "huh." "You're sleeping on your feet like a horse, hmm?"
And yes, all the other Ennisisms, the little mumblings. That "Idunno" in bed at the motel, with the smile... Oh, sweet, sweet. Here's one I like: on the very first day, after getting hired, when they're sitting in the bar, Ennis takes out a cigarette and of course he doesn't say, "May I use your lighter please," he holds out his hand kind of, and mumbles something unintelligible, "canI?" or something, and Jack hands him his lighter. (Excuse me, Ennis smokes, he doesn't have his own lighter?)

I find this discussion really interesting in that the movie's Ennis Del Mar says "Huh?" a whole lot; but, the "question" does not even appear in the short story. "Hunh?" is not in the story either. "Hunh?" is "Huh?" pronounced with a French accent.

Well TJ, seeing the discussion is about Ennis saying "huh" a lot, it would be my guess we are discussing the movie and not the book this time. Wouldn't you say that was a logical assumption?
-
Rhetorical question to the movie makers and the script writers: Why did Ennis say "Huh?" so much in the movie?
Was he really supposed that absent minded that he has to be retold something when another person talks to him? Was he supposed to have an adult Attention Deficit disorder (or however you say that)?

That could be an excellent question TJ. But, seeing nobody here wrote the screenplay (to the best of my knowledge) perhaps it would be better to pose the question directly to the screenwriters instead of here. Oh, I am sure there are some who would speculate but I suspect you would prefer a true answer instead of speculation.
Just in case you haven't seen their addresses on the Forum, here they are:

Oh, I did not say that I would write them or even ask them to their faces. Besides, if I were to mail one or more letters, I would have to go buy stamps. I haven't bought any since they raised the postage rates here in the USA. I don't even use the US Postal Service to pay my monthly bills.

Anyway...back on topic.
I've actually come to love all of Ennis's "huh" moments (just one more thing to love...) Lots of folk have little mannerisms or noises that they repeat over and over again and it's quite often endearing - making them unique. The fact that we're talking about it at all shows that it was an effective way of making Ennis unique - presumably added by Heath, since I can't imagine Diana and Larry wrote lots of "huhs" into the screenplay!
I still love the mumbled "ahdunno" in the motel room most though - although I do find myself wanting to scream at him to stop mumbling and tell Jack how he feels ::) ;)
-
And yes, all the other Ennisisms, the little mumblings.
That's brilliant ksxks, I loved it!!! Ennisisms. if you don't mind, I'll ask Cham to add it to the BBM slang dictionary... ;D
-
oh god, I recall there being a topic on imdb about the number of ennis' 'huh's :D I reckon there where more than 20 ( can't remember ). but I agree, it's funny :D and souch a great touch, I mean, so 'in character'- kudos to ledger :D
-
I'm sure Heath picked up the "huh" thing when he was studying his accent for Ennis. Probably when they were all hanging around the locale and people, maybe he heard some guy or guys do that and decided to use it. I love it myself. I love his mumbling, and I never had any trouble understanding. It does seem that the majority of the "huh's" are in stressful situations, so it's like a kind of nervous tic he developed for Ennis?

When you stand with the mouse on the smiley, the caption says "huh" ;D
-
Ennis's "huh"s often seem to me to be semi-aggressive and challenging - he uses them instead of some proper sentence like "What do you mean?" " Or why should I?" or whatever. Ennis isn't one to waste words - I always think of him as hoarding them like a miser, and "Huh" is the least he can get away with. It also has the advantage of catching the other person off-guard - how do they know how to respond?
-
We should make a list of all the "huh"s he says lol. Next time I'm watching the film I'll do one lol! ;D
-
The scene up on BBM right after Jack flicks his belt buckle (and makes that cute little noise), Ennis says: "What's the point of riding a piece of stock for 8 seconds, HUH?"
-

I reckon someone on imdb already made one some time ago....maybe I can try and find it.

It's a toss up which one signifies Ennis more - that one or this:
&*&
Maybe it would be the second one if the caption said "Whut?" instead of "What?" ;)

My last night's viewing, I counted 15 -- but I'm sure that's not definitive. I've never watched the DVD with subtitles on -- do they write out the huh? :c)
-
is it just me, or do Ennis' "huhs" vary depending on how he feels.
So far Ive come across three examples of different sounding "huhs":
1. The confused "huh"- Ennis uses this one when talking to Jack. Best example would be, "But that snow barely struck an hour..huh."
2. The accusatory/mad "huh"- Ennis uses this one again in the company of Mr. Twist. Prime example would be, "You been to Mexico Jack Twist...huh?"
This one sounds a more more deliberate than the first one and spiteful. It also has a lower tone to it.
3. The happy "huh"- A very rare one that Ennis uses with Alma Jr. "My little girl is getting married....huuuh."
This one is definetly longer than the others and has a higher pitch towards the end.
Just thought Id share my thoughs on the wonderful world of Ennis talk!

We should create a little book . . .
101 ways to say . . . HUH
Brought to you by Ennis Del Mar

The above remark by tpe is interesting because I watched an interview with Heath wherein he said that he tried to change Ennis's voice to show the changes that Ennis went through. In the begginning, when Ennis & Jack were together on the mountain, his voice was higher-pitched and had more optimism. As he aged, and became more and more defeated, his voice got lower and lower and more resigned. So maybe his "happy-huh" in response to Jr's getting married meant that he really was happy for her and that he found some joy in his otherwise bleak existence? I certainly hope so!!
-
ahem...my dear pal tpe didnt write that "happy huh" case study.............*coughcoughMEcoughcough*
Wow I totally wrote that study as a joke :P
But it is true, I guess I watch BBM too closely. You just have to listen real closely and you can tell exactly how Ennis is feeling...through his "huhs" <^(

I think I saw the same interview. And I think you are right about his happy huh at the end.
Welcome to EnnisJack.com. Looking forward to mor of your posts.

I think often when Ennis says "Huh?" he just wants affirmation of whatever he said. Like some poeple say "ain't it?" at the end of a statement, or "Right?" It's just a way to see if the person you're talking with is on the same wavelength as you. At other times, I think it means he really is confused about what answer he shouldmake -- the repercussions of his answers. By saying"Huh?" he can buy some time to think or just put the issue under the carpet, so to speak. Then, sometimes, I think it's just Heath's way of being Ennis. It's distinctly Ennis. Nobody else says it, so it helps establish the Ennisness of Ennis.

Twisted Darko, it was an honest mistake by fizzerbass. :)
Some "jokes" have a way of crystalizing a truth. Your comments, although written in a light-hearted spirit, do exactly this.
fizzerbass, thank you for sharing. I found your post insighful. "The Ennisness of Ennis" -- I love that very much. :)

Gave me an excuse to watch it again, anyway - am up to the final scene by the lake and have counted twelve "huh"'s so far, with a variety of apparent meanings. Will finish counting when I watch the rest - I was goin g to look jst at the Ennis scenes but how possible would it be for me to miss the scenes with Jack alone? Im-possible, thta's how possible.
Ennis has a repertoire of little noises - "mm" and " a sort of stifled " thank you " as well.

Yes the thank you after being poured some whiskey is quite stifled...

I love this subject, TD. It's one of the first things I noticed and loved about Ennis in the movie, his "huh's," and I'm glad you pointed out the different intonations, etc.
And here's another almost-"huh." I consider it definitely a "huh," although he actually says it "hmm?" because he's so relaxed and happy. It's in the dozy embrace. "You're sleepin' on your feet like a horse, hmm?"

Oh, I love that muffled "thank you" he does right then. He also does little muffled words of some sort when he asks Jack for his lighter in the bar in Signal in the beginning.
I think these were brilliant touches of Heath's to create this character; and besides his voice coach for this film, I would think he hung out and listened to people in the area, when they were going around Wyoming, yes?

We do need a Dictionary of Ennis.
Muyah? = Could I please use your lighter even though I have my own, because I'm finding myself wanting to have some physical contact with you.
Thunyu = I know what you're doing -- you're trying to get me drunk, and I'm happy to oblige. But don't blame it on me if you get more than you bargained for in your tent tonight.
Huh? (jam hands in pockets and kick the dirt) [Snow barely stuck an hour, huh?] = I am so f**king pissed at having to leave and frustrated at not knowing how to tell you I don't want to leave you because this has been the most special time I've ever had in my life. I'm going to go pout and I'd love it if you would come get me and we could have a little roll in the hay, but I'm so upset because in my whole life I've never felt like this...and I might just have to punch you if you dare try to get close to me again.
I'm not as creative as some here, and I'm sure you can come up with more/better ones. Including all the various huh's.
kathy

My mom use to have a boyfriend who Ennis reminds me off. They both talked a little 'ignorant.' And he used to say 'huh?' ALOT too. This guy was below the average intelligence, though I love Ennis, we know he isn't as well educated as he had liked to have been.
"Yer nineteen, you can do whatever you want now, huh?"-He meant, to say "when i was nineteen, i was wild, crazily horny, and screwing a beautiful man in a tent, smaller than the bathroom. Since I was all goofy, you can be to."

"I've got to work, huh?" - All very well for you with your rich bitch wife and your job in the family firm - all came easy to you, Jack, but I've had sixteen years of doing crap jobs that I could drop to come and see you. I've lived in dumps and lost my wife and kids and you don't seem to have the faintest idea of what I've given up for you. Now I'm older jobs aren't so easy to come by and if I dump this one I may not get another, but you don't have to worry about things like that because you've got good old LD's daiughter's money to rely on. You're bitchin' away about August the way you used to bitch up on Brokeback that first summer.

Wow, this is cool -- I don't even recognize that line! Must be one of those that I've never quite heard what was said.
Does Ennis say this after he'd asked Jack what's the point of rodeoing and Jack says money's the point?

Welshwitch - I just love your decoding !!

Yes.
BTW, i counted at least 15 "huh"s of one sort and another plus all sorts of other half-words and noises. Ennis isn't just reluctant to speak - he also seems to use all these npoises as a sort of alternative language, maybe to prevent himself from having to have too much contact with others but at the same time maintaining enough contact not to appear rude. the more I think about these noises, the more interesting they seem - an Ennis defense mechanism, sort of portcullis.

Interesting indeed. Decoding Ennis.
I can just feel his discomfort in "social" situations, ever since he was a young(er) man, tossed out in the world on his own with few skills and that certain amount of fear, and not being a naturally outgoing guy like Jack is, so he had to learn to do as little as necessary so that people would at least allow him into their world, so he could get work, at least. Somehow he met a girl and got close to her, though. I wonder how that happened. I don't picture him going to church and meeting her that way. And I wonder what jobs he had before Brokeback? Three or four years since he had left high school. Does the SS say?
kathy
kathy
-
The ss says that when the truck broke down he went straight into ranch work, I assume wherever his brother was, and they all stuck together till his sister got married and moved to Casper. According to the ss the brother is still in Signal, which makes it odd that Ennis arrives there in the movie. Actually the ss seems more logical - Ennis would have got a job from someone in Signal if he lived there - then I wonder how he met Alma, who was presumably from riverfton, though that's only what the screenplay says. It's hopeless trying to match up the two - you can't.
As far as the "huh"s go, and the other noises, given that Ennis is pretty socially inept, he may find it simpler and safer to make oises - less chance of saying the wrong thing. He doesn;t actually say anything very extensive or lengthy till he feels more at ease with Jack; the "huh"s often come back when he's worried or angry or ill-at-ease in some way.

Welshwitch - Not to sound sexist, but I have a husband, three brothers, four brothers-in-law, two sons and seventeen nephews. They all have pretty good social skills and more than basic education...and they all grunt and mumble... :8

With all those men in your family you should know that all the grunts and mumbles are our (men's) secret language handed down from man to man over millions of years from the cave men. It is a language very much like Chinese where the same word spoken with a different pitch means something different.
We in the US don't use it all that much any more but our Canadian brothers to the North use it all the time....ay.

We in the US don't use it all that much any more but our Canadian brothers to the North use it all the time....ay.
;D ;D
Ohmygod, LOL. Grunts and mumbles, cave men, Chinese inflections...
But especially: Canadian Ennis = ay?
Hmm...what does Jack do, what comparable thing to Ennis's huh, huh? I don't think he has any verbal tics or what have you. Maybe his posing then. Posing/posturing also a cave man thing?

Well Kathy, I figure that because Jack never had a father to teach him the man language, or a brother for that matter, he never learned it. But he learned to communicate with men in another way...the universal language.

Of course for about as long as men have been communicating with each other by noises, women have been interpreting them and not letting on. :)
Patriot 1's universal language is a nice idea, but how do you ask the nice man on the deli counter for an asparagus quiche and a dozen tiger prawns in it?

I'm late coming to this thread, but it's been interesting to read all the posts.
Decoding Ennis......I love that...although that man is so complex and deep that I doubt anyone will ever be able to. But it's fun trying.
What about the "huh" Ennis mutters during his wait for Jack after 4 years....Alma says "maybe we could get a babysitter, take your friend to the knife and fork"......Ennis, mind most definitely on other matters, can only manage a grunted "huh" in reply, which to me, says "god, Alma, I'd forgotten you were there, I'm so nervous and excited about seeing Jack. There's no damn way I'll be sharing Jack with anyone tonight, least of all you."
-
Patriot 1, ladies don't point and ladies don't grunt!
the grunt to alma before Jack arrives is also a case of there being nothing Ennis can plausibly say, anyway, since the truth isn't an option.

Oh! I thought you were asking how a MAN asks "the nice man on the deli counter for an asparagus quiche and a dozen tiger prawns in it?"
With grunts and pointing. Women can't use man talk.

Actually, I'd been saying "huh" a lot, and had to stop, because without it being in context -- I mean, when you're not talking to a fellow Brokie, it just sounds dumb (or maybe a little like a guy-grunt?). Especially because I try to say it just like Ennis. So I stopped doing that in proper company, like at work.

I have been sitting here racking my brain trying to remember a time when I have heard a woman say, "ay" like the Canadians do and I can not remember ever hearing a woman say that. So, I guess you women should just leave the man talk to us guys...maybe come up with your own language...huh? :8 :8

I say "ay," but that's because I like to imitate different kinds of talking etc.
Anyway, you can be sure we women do have our own language -- it's so good that you guys don't even know we've got it. Almost as obscure as pointing-and-grunting. You think we're really talking about lipstick and Swiffer wet-jets?

LOL Kathy ;D I had a similar problem with saying "Ahdunno" all the time, until my daughter asked how come she got told off for dropping her t's when I kept doing it myself! ::)
Anyway, two huh's that I love are the morning after the storm, when all the sheep are mixed up "what are supposed to do now, huh?", which is like "I told you this would happen if I didn't get back to the sheep, didn't I? You were right I would've got thrown off the horse if I'd tried, and yes,it was a great excuse to have some fun keeping warm in the tent, but I'm still going to let you do all the hard work sorting out the sheep, while I just sit on the horse and shout out orders!" ;)
The other one is the post-divorce scene, "what are you doing here, huh?" where Ennis is trying to play it cool, like Jack turning up on his doorstep happened every day, but his heart must have been jumping all over the place, not only just seeing Jack, but wondering why he was there, was something wrong, and then seeing him get out of the truck smiling from ear to ear, looking so happy and gorgeous Ennnis probably was wanting to plant another reunion kiss on him, but having to restrain himself cause the girls were there, but still couldn't help hugging him and holding him tight <^(...before sending him straight back again, without even a kiss, or a coffee :\'(
-
I quite like the first one - "What if Aguirre finds out, huh?" - Ennis challenging Jack and implying he's wrong, which he doesn't often do. At this point he's also feeling guilty - it's his being thrown that's resulted in "this food situation" and Jack's threat to shoot the sheep.

Too funny, CrimsonSky -- your undunno's. It does sound pretty dumb unless one knows why you're doing it. And we certainly don't want to use Ennis-speak where our children would emulate. :)
And good huh's. I haven't thought about these ones in a while. In fact, I don't know that I've properly heard the one in the post-divorce scene when Jack comes. Oh boy -- must do research with the DVD. Thanks. Oh, but that scene is so poignant. Jack is so happy, but Ennis is held back...and then the sad ending to it. I want to smack Ennis for not having Jack in for at least a little while.

I love just reading quotes from the movie! <^(
So someone please tell me if Ennis said "Huh?" during the "having to come down from Brokeback" scene. You know, where he kicks the ground...
Shelley
-
yep, he said it twice...
first, "that snow barely stuck an hour, huh?"
and then later... "I don't need your money, huh? I ain't in the poorhouse... shit"
;D ;D he can't help it...

I think a lot of people want to smack Ennis for turning Jack away. %(
-
It's also true that Ennis doesn;t say "Huh?" when he's realy angry - eg with the bikers, at Thanksgiving and in the final part of the scene by the lake. When he knows what he wants to say and isn't trying to say as little as possible, it disappears. So maybe it's a conscious way of avoiding speech when he's in control and not deeply emotional?

As much as I adore Jack, and my heart breaks for him in that scene, I can't be too harsh on Ennis there. He didn't know Jack was going to turn up, and it must have made him really panic when he saw him turn up out of the blue, his two separate worlds coming together like that. Also, he only got to see his daughters once a month, I don't know how I would cope if I could only see my daughter once a month, and I wouldn't put any man, not even Jack/Jake before her.It might not have been as simple as just taking the girls back to Alma, maybe she and Monroe had gone away for the weekend, and Ennis had missed the previous month's visit, so he may have worried it would seem to the girls like he wasn't that interested in seeing them, or if Alma was being difficult, that she might use it as an excuse to limit him even more from seeing them. And what excuse could he give her, he could hardly say he couldn't have the girls cause he wanted to spent time with his "fishing buddy".Maybe I'm just seeing it from a parent's pov, but I think the fact his daughters were there goes a long way to explaining why he reacted that way to Jack. And there's no doubt Ennis feels bad about rejecting Jack, the way he says "I'm so sorry, you know I am", and his muted "Jack..." when Jack turns to leave... :\'(
Having said that,he should have asked Jack to get a motel room somewhere and come back when the girls were asleep, or the next day when they went back to Alma, and if that wasn't an option, then arrange to see him the following weekend, or something. At the very least, he should have invited him inside for a coffee (unless he thought Junior would remember he told Alma Jack was from Texas and didn't drink coffee ::)) and something to eat, after driving all that way :(
-
Very good points, Crimsonsky

I always wondered why Jack didn't just drive up to his parents and then come back in a few days when the girls were back with Alma.
-
I suppose we're supposed to see the impetuous nature of Jack's character there; he's dropped everything when he hears about the divorce, and some without checking if it's a good time. then when Ennis makes it clear that it's not, he impetuously turns on his heel and goes away.
In reality he could obviously have gone up to see his parents, which is presumably what he told Lureen he was doing, then come back the next weekend, when Ennis wouldn;t have the girls.
But then there'd have been a whole different movie...
-

But he does say, "...knock the rest of your f**king teeth out, huh?" to the biker. But otherwise, this as you describe it could well be the case. Sometimes, though, I think it's just plain a common language tic, like I say "like" all the time, or "you know." It's a lazy language habit we can tend to get into when younger...and sometimes not get out of later, unless we have to do proper public speaking or business speaking or some such.

I totally agree with you, CrimsonSky. But what I meant was what you said in last paragraph above here -- just that he could at least have had him in like a normal person. Go to the bathroom, have a cup of coffee and food, before turning aroud and driving all that way back. The girls would probably have liked Jack, something a little fun and different, and maybe even flirted with him, as girls can tend to do -- he's so cute, even though "old." :)

*o) but the ide of Jack as old cracks me up. in the divorce scene he was about 31, and at the end pnly 38 or 39, the latter when he died. Sure, you change in the twenty years between the end of your teens and late thirties, but you don't necessarily turn into a grey-haired overweight middle-aged man at that point!
-
Not to feed the already rediculous off topica(new word) ::) but I love the scene when Ennis/Jack meet after the divorce. Yeah, i feel sorry for Jack, but the acting, by both men, is great in that scene. I love it dearly, though it turns out wrong. Its actually one of my top 10 favorite scenes in the movie, i love the way Ennis half-smiles, in a flirty kind of way when looking at Jack. Its so beautiful :d) i would never slap Ennis (unless, well lets not go there)
Jack does look too young in that scene. Ang, are ya blind?
signs of Ang's nearsightedness
1.Ennis is uglied up too much
2.The nice, future car in the driveway in that one scene
3.The wire on Alma Jr. (after reunion scene)
4.Jack/Ennis are cowboys, they aren't suppose to be beautiful! (not that i'm complaining) ;)

I of course only meant Jack would be"old" to young teenage girls. Heck, Ennis and Jack were spring chickens, as far as I'm concerned.

OOT: I do admit that in the after-the-divorce meeting, Ennis appears older than he should be. The toll of the divorce, perhaps?
Back on topic, I do love the "huh" in this scene. And his restrained surprise and initial pleasure of seeing Jack go very well with it.
-
In one of the fanfics I read one of Ennis's daughters , after meeting Jack and accepting her father's relationship actually says " Daddy, your man is a"looker") ...and he is. So much for teenage girls not not knowin good lookin "older " guy when they see them . I personally live with this,so I know.Matter of fact It was my own daughter who clued me in to who these guys were. Her exact words were":Them cowboys look good" SCARY. Anyway Ennis's use of the word Huh? to me is just him speaking as all of us do at times, although he usuasally says it when he gets frustrated and is trying to make a point about something IMO.Bottom line is they're both "lookers" and I'm hooked .
P.S. I love Ennis and even I wanted to slap him in the post-divorce scene.

I am bumping up this thread with the intent of merging this with a new thread with almost the same topic (Ennis's "huhs" and Jack's "alrights"). Let me know if there are any objections to the merge. Thanks!
I will keep the title of the new thread, to include Jack's "alrights". :)
-
I personally have no objection:I missed the thread when you began it,and I haven. t read anything about it more than the other from lightning flat ???
By the way, perhaps it´s a nonsense, but I don´t know if the "huh" and "allrights" are additional remark from the script or from the actors themselves;the same that the enormous amount of cigarettes that both characters/or actors are smoking during all the movie...Excuse me for the stupidity.

Interesting, Thomas, because I had never really been aware that Jack has an "alright" thing. Now I'll have to pay attention.

Yea i didnt realise this was alredy being discussed when i started the new topic.

Love the ennisisms and ennisists, guys!

I also love the ennisisms too. The man is constantly tucking his shirt in! ;D, and in the water walking Jesus scene, as he hands Jack back the whiskey bottle, instead of saying here's the bottle back, he just says hmm! I luv em he's so what my southern parents would call * down home* or in this case, midwest charming.
