Some priceless moments in the film.
Feel free to add to the list and comment on them.
In approximate chronological order.
1. When Ennis/Ledger is washing himself and Jack/Gyllenhaal gulps, tightens his jaw, and tries SO hard not to look.
2. In the second love scene inside the tent. Jack and Ennis kiss for the first time. They pause in the middle of all this, trying to make it last a bit longer.
3. When Ennis collapses in the alley after parting with Jack, as if his guts are being drawn out by the yard.
4. When Ennis' lips tremble uncontrollably when he reads Jack's first postcard after 4 years of silence.
5. When Ennis first catches a glimpse of Jack getting out of his truck from the window of his home. The face is suffused with a happiness that is close to tears.
6. When the lovers embrace for the first time in 4 years. Ennis pushes Jack against a wall and kisses him. Jack reciprocates by pushing Ennis against a post and kisses him. In both cases, you can tell that they are almost in tears.
7. When Alma sees Ennis and Jack kissing.
8. When Alma cries after Ennis leaves her for a weekend with Jack.
9. The short idyll that begins with Jack saying 'Anything interesting up there in heaven?' You see Ennis lying down looking up to the stars, his face full of contentment and quiet happiness.
10. Jack's face breaking into a radiant smile after seeing Ennis arrive at the camp site. It is a look of pure pleasure -- an intense happiness of being with Ennis.
11. When Jack weeps in his car after being 'rejected' by Ennis after the divorce with Alma.
12. In their last meeting: the tenor of Jack's voice when he says 'Tell you what. The fact is... Sometimes I miss you so much that I can barely stand it.' The still small voice crackles with emotion.
13. Jack: 'All we have...is Brokeback Mountain'. Gyllenhaal's neck veins bulge with grief and passion in this scene.
14. In their last meeting, Ennis turns to Jack after Jack says 'I wish I knew how to quit you.' It clouded with tears and an indescribable pain...indeed, like clouds from a thermal spring. 'Then why don't you? Why don't you let me be. It's because of you Jack that I'm like this. I'm nobody. I'm nowhere.' You see Ennis pressing his thumbs between his eyes in his futile attempt to keep back the tears. When he collapses in Jack's arms, you see his face contorted with pain and sadness. This is the undisputable summit of Ledger's performance in the film.
15. The entire 'Embrace from behind' flashback. Jack resting his head on Ennis' arm. Ennis' hand tracing tender arcs on Jack's collar, as he hums a half-forgotten song. Jack looks at Ennis riding off. There is so much tenderness and love in that look, veiled ever so slightly with a knowing sadness. This scene is Gyllenhaal's most magical performance in the film.
16. Gyllenhaal's last shot in the film. So full of sadness, resignation, but also love.
17. Jack's mother meeting Ennis outside Jack's home. She is 'defeated and resigned.'
18. Jack's mother, placing her arm tenderly on Ennis when she invites him to go to Jack's room.
19. Ennis hugging the shirts in Jack's room, and inhaling on them.
20. Ennis looking out the window with indescribable regret, after Alma Jr. affirms Kurt's love -- a regret for what he cannot have, for what he will never have...
21. Ennis' face burning with tears as he says 'Jack, I swear...'

Yes, I think despite Jack & Ennis' adversities, we all hope (if we haven't already found it) that we would find that special connection with a "soulmate." For that brief period they were together (even though it spanned 20 years) they seemed to be happiest when they were together, despite their heartbreaking confrontations. You so much want them to be happy and together, and to stop hurting the people around them that were affected from the consequence of their societal-pressured bad decisions, :'(

Brokeback Mountain contains numerous scenes that are touched with cinematic enchantment. Almost every scene is like a treasure. The first kiss in the tent is arguably the most passionate scene. (Love the way Ang shot it so the fire in the background danced between their lips) Ennis finding his shirt in Jack’s room is arguably the saddest moment. (It tore me apart)
But the gem... the OMEGA of Brokeback moments is the "Embrace from behind' flashback. Where it's placed in the film, in combination with the haunting music, allows it to evoke an emotional blend of melancholic saddens as well as utter bliss. The scene even feels imbued with all the emotional acuity of beautify realized tone poem. It’s the crucial, most blatant moment to render how much Ennis and Jack love each other and how their indelible bond will forever go unparalleled. A brief moment in their lives where both are fully at peace- their bodies close, gently swaying together in the mountain air. It's an achingly beautiful sequence.

I so agree...though the short story and the movie show/describe this scene differently, in both cases they are very powerful!!!! Watery eyes every time for little froggy me!

I agree!
It seems to me that in a way, it is hard to accuse Ennis of being unfeeling, as his portrayal by Ledger shows a sensitive, caring side in very quiet and unassuming ways.
This is one such portrayal. In his mind, it certainly was not Alma's fault, and he did love his daughters very much. But he knew that Jack was the great love of his life. In a sense, the tears are tears of resignation. He could not fathom how things could end differently -- and there lies the tragedy of Ennis.

when Jack is driving to Ennis' house right after he heard about the divorce. He's singing along in his truck with the careless cheeriness that only someone who is truly happy can have... it only makes it more heartbreaking when he's rejected and the truck drive him for Jack is one with a completely different atmosphere.
When Ennis and Jack first arrive at Aguirre's trailer at the beginning of the movie. Jack decides to take that particular time to shave his sideburns in the car mirror, giving him a perfect view of Ennis (of course, this is only a coincidence ;))

Talking about watery eyes. I love the scene when Ennis told Lureen where the Brokeback Mountain is. You can hear a little noice on her throat and all the sudden her eyes was filled with tears. That is an amazing acting.

Because you can finally see into Ennis's character a little bit more, and see his passion. He truly loved Jack with everything inside him and in this scene it comes out and we begin to sense the overpowering regret felt by him because he didn't listen to his heart. If you read the last paragraph of the short story you can see this a little better. What blows me away is the overwhelming emotion felt by Ennis, and that he would probably give his life for just a few more seconds with Jack. Their love is amazing!!

Hathaway does amazing things with such a small part. The whimpers, or croaks, or whatever it was, when she was talking to Ennis seemed to say that although she was trying to be cold toward the man she knew to be "the other woman," her heart was broken, nonetheless.
And in the Thanksgiving scene where Jack tells his father-in-law to sit down, her smile which she quickly hides, and the glance at Jack which was somewhere between approval and admiration, made me laugh out loud.
Taken together these two scenes demonstrate something missing from the book -- that Lureen truly did love Jack.

For sure, he is ambivalent. I think the prior rodeo clown scene makes him realize he has to repress or be outcast.

I posted this earlier on another post, but I thought it worthwhile to add it to this one too as another priceless moment in the film.
This priceless moment takes place between #3 and #4 when Jack dances with Lureen while the song "I Don't Want to Say Goodbye" plays. In one shot, you see him smiling at Lureen, they do a spin, and in the next shot, you see Jack with his face right beside Lureen looking sadly into the distance, thinking about how much he misses Ennis and wished that he could be holding him instead. Even then, it showed him how much he loved him. That's one of the most potent scenes in the movie. ; ;

There was a connection between Ennis and Jack's mother. They knew they could not verbalize their thougts -- with the very onery and angry Mr. Twist in the room. This moment was extremely emotional for me.

You are not the only one. Roberta Maxwell (Jack's mother) does there an astounding piece of acting.
She deserves an Award nomination. Like the whole cast in BBM, wow, the unspoken language! She is just overwhelming.

Every scene mentioned is priceless and stands out for its own merits. It's why I'm so impressed with this film. The actors convey so much emotion without complicated dialog. As a result the viewer is able understand and FEEL the passion and pain depicted throughout the story. BBM is going to be hard act follow for any film maker who hopes to one day touch the heart of the public.
Personally speaking...it's going to be a long time before I can fully absorb this film's emotional impact and function normally again.
(OMG!! I've got to survive the release of the DVD too! :o)

I think I have to agree. As I sit here listening to All I Need by Radiohead, all I can do is cling to an agreement that this scene transcends and lives somewhere much softer than the surface of earth. <^(

I love the scene after Ennis has already broken up with Cassie, and he's sitting at the table eating, and Cassie comes up and talks to him. Ennis looks so sad, so detached, and lonely, it makes you just want to hug him. And then he says, "I probably wasn't much fun anyway." It's a very "awwwww" moment for me.

The whole scene from the ride to Ennis until he drives home again is so full of hope, Jack really thought Ennis wrote him to ask him to be together.
And when his hope is denied he's so sad...boy that drove a stick trough my heart

And it's more priceless-what can be in a positive or negative sense-because it confirms the lack of a real communication they have always had.In the end of this scene Jack(who has always had a word to say,to share and to make his feelings remarkable)seems to feel himself naked before Ennis in an emotional sense for having made this trip and what it means to him...and he's silent.And,if you realise it,Ennis,the real silent,the close in himself,the man with few words and an intense inner life,wants to start a conversation-perhaps to find a solution for them during these days?-murmuring a shy "Jack...",but his lover runs from him without a word.It's curious this "change" of reactions and attitudes in them...

I think that in one sense, she did shame him in that scene. As you had implied, it is a pendant that reinforces the final confrontation scene with Jack. To a certain extent, Jack and Cassie speak the same message.

The latter part of this 2-part scene is what makes it difficult for me. But watching the movie for the very first time, you are indeed made glad by Jack's optimism as he drives to Ennis's home, and are deeply moved by the rejection.

You're welcome,Anacondaˇ ^f^ Yes,you say "Jack runs off without a word because he only heard the denial,he couldn't listen to anything else...",I guess there's implicit in this phrase that he didn't listen,whatever his feelings were.I also understand Jack here because there was several times in which I felt the same-also for the other person's fears before society and before her own feelings-.But it doesn't mean that I don't believe their lack of communication as one of the main faults they had as a couple.And that Jack,who was always listening to Ennis rejections and denials,for his disgrace,that time made his deceivement greater than his need to know why...

Yes, for Jack (and for me), the DE is perhaps the most priceless scene in the entire movie.

Yes,it's almost heartbreaking the communication based in a deep respect and understanding that is established between these two persons; each one of them know what the other knows but there´s a main point both of them know.That they're the two persons in the world who has loved Jack the most and whom he had loved the most also.Indeed,Thomas,Old Twists presence only serves to increase this silent communication between them,far beyond the words they can't pronounce before him.

Following suit, I find this haunting and bittersweet. A reckoner of sour timing coming to slap me around. She knows, yeah. And then the scenario of Ennis having met her while Jack was alive, enters my mind and kicks my ass. I think the whole chamber of the Twists' is remarkable, and how it sits so robustly planted under that vivid sky enchants me to no end...
I agree, her eyes are priceless.

Yep, makes me wonder had Ennis met Mrs. Twist when Jack was alive , what effect it would've had on Ennis's decision to build a cabin and ranch up with Jack in LF. We'll never know, but Ennis finding her acceptance of he and Jack's love , he was shown everyone does'nt hate , he knew he had found a true friend. Wether that would have been enough? who knows? His eyes and her eyes tell the story of what could've been. I felt like Jack's sprit was in that room all along watching. He was so close,yet so far . It's part of the huge tradgedy of the film. :\'(

We'll never know, but Ennis finding her acceptance of he and Jack's love , he was shown everyone does'nt hate , he knew he had found a true friend. Wether that would have been enough? who knows? His eyes and her eyes tell the story of what could've been. I felt like Jack's sprit was in that room all along watching. He was so close,yet so far . It's part of the huge tradgedy of the film. :\'(
