Title: did jack have a vision of some sort while being filled up?
Post by: manila_rocks on May 09, 2006, 06:04 PM
It seems to me that a strange look filled the eyes of Jack while he was being filled by ennis.

I am wondering, do others feel Jack may have been experiencing some sort of vision?

In my country, some are prone to visions after consuming a particular drink made from the ground bark (underneath the tree in wet soil only) of a certain type of palm family tree.   Did anyone see Jack have any sort of beverage and are the palm family of trees prevalent in this part of your country?

I am observing on the internet that Texas does have palm trees.

Jack did live in texas so he could have brought something with him I imagine.  I am not saying he was an "addict" of any sort.  It may have just been something he chose to experience from time to time.

I don't think Jack had moved to Texas yet during the early years.

manila_rocks, welcome back.  :)

This is an interesting way of putting it.  I am not sure.  I am not even sure if I see his eyes at that point...

manila_rocks, There definitely *aren't* palm trees in Canada, where the film was shot.  I also am not aware of any US/Canadian beliefs about visions caused by ingesting particular natural substances, except for the fact that certain Native American and ancient Mexican peoples sought out visions by chewing peyote (a cactus whose leaves contain the hallucinogen mescaline), fasting, and walking alone in the desert.  But I doubt that these are activities that Ennis and Jack would have participated in.

However, we certainly do see them ingesting other mind-altering substances--whiskey, and later marijuana.  The idea of their having visions during intimate contact is an intriguing one . . . .

I figured there were not palm trees in Canada.  But,since the seasons are opposite twice a year, I thought perhaps there were palm trees in the South of Canada closer to the equator.

I am aware of this situation from having gone to Australia and New Zealand because the north of those countries is warmer than the south.
