I don't know if this has been discussed before but I found it odd that when Jack and Ennis said goodbye and left town after their first summer they were both going in the same direction and Jack never offered Ennis a ride to the highway. Any thoughts?
Welcome ejr. Yes, this topic has been discussed in other threads.
I think the general feeling was that Jack was trying to send signals to Ennis throughout that scene, trying to gauge if Ennis wanted to stay in touch. Ennis did not bite the bait, and so Jack could do nothing but leave.
We must remember that Ennis had refused Jack before. Recall the time when he offered to lend Ennis money. We know how that ended. Of course, Jack probably wanted to lend Ennis money partly to stay in touch with him after that summer. Ennis refused to bite the bait once more. But we know that it was not money that bothered Ennis in that scene. He so desperately wanted to spend more time with Jack up in the Mountain...
In some threads, it had been discussed how things could have ended differently if Jack was able to convince Ennis to take a ride with him -- perhaps made him come along to his visit to his parents...
