Hello bokano, welcome and thanks for your first post. Can you please elaborate the details?

Can you imagine the post office in Riverton, getting a postcard from each member here addressed to
Ennis Del Mar
General Delivery
Riverton, Wyoming
82501
That is the correct zip code for Riverton by the way.
They'd have a herd! ;D

Hi. ehtan.
Here is my thought. Since BBM will win the best film (It must win, and I am sure it will win! ;) ). journalists and reporters may need some interesting follow-up stories about this film. I plan to find a cheap but interesting way of making a story for them while at the same time showing my thanks to BBM.
I am thinking of sending a postcard to Ennis Del Mar by general delivery to Riverton, Wyoming, just as what Jack had done in the movie. Imagine the scene - postoffice in Riverton are overwhelmed by tons of postcards sent to Ennis Del Mar. It must be very exciting and will be an interesting story for journalists. It only costs me less than 50 cents to get on news coverage. Worth it.
We can say anything on the postcard about our feelings toward this movie. Or we can just copy what Jack had written on the postcard "Freind this letter is long overdue. Coming through on the 24th. Drop me a line say if your there." Are there other better suggestions? (I especially want to say: Uncle Del Mar, congradulations!!! My dad used to say you were his fishing buddy and you can fish very well. Can I go up to Wyoming and learn how to fish from you? I know it is cold there, so I will bring my blue parka with me. Sincerely, Bobby Twist"
And I will expect (although I guess it may be impossible) that Focus are willing to spend some money to send the postcard back to us with "You bet" and Heath Ledger's signature ;D
Thanks Cowboy Cody to provide the address:)

I am from Taiwan and I am struggling with my graduate student life in the US. I am so proud to say I come from the same country as Ang Lee!!!!
-
bokano, thanks for clarifying. I think it is a good idea.
I splited your posts as a new topic for further discussion. Is there still general delivery these days?
-
Ethan - Yes there is. A friend of my Dad's lives in Vermont. You just address the letter to him and put the name of the town...lol
I think sending cards there with the message is a great idea! Esp. What better way to keep it kickin~!
Bokano - Tough time adjusting in the states? I had grad school with a girl from Taiwan, she was really nice. I enjoyed talking with her and learning about Taiwan.
-
Thanks ethan.
It is the link I have found from USPS website: http://www.usps.com/receive/choicesfordelivery/receivemailinotherplaces.htm. I guess general delivery still works today, especially in some rural areas...
-
Thanks, Cody. Perhaps there is a real person in WY named Ennis Del Mar.
Yes, the postal office gets a bunch of undeliverable postcards -- maybe it will turn into a news story. I hope they will not be wasted.
If there are more people interested in doing this, I will organize a GD campaign.
-
Hi, Cowboy Cody,
Thanks for your reply! Yes. Life is super tough here. I am almost like a mute and deaf person here who can only write and speak K-12 level English. But in fact I am a graduate student here!! OMG!!
In this way, I was especially moved by a scene in BBM. which is almost ignored by many audiences. That scene touched my deep heart because it is just my everyday experience.
[Ennis enters the grocery store where Alma works]
Ennis Del Mar: Hey, Monroe. Is Alma here?
Monroe: Uh, yeah, she’s in the condiments aisle.
Ennis Del Mar: The what?
Monroe: Uh - ketchup.
[points]
Ennis Del Mar: Thanks.

unless they throw it in dead letter file or return to sender as undeliverable. computers do the work probably and not people like the old days.

Hi, ethan,
This concern also has come into my mind once. I hope those postcard won't be wasted or just simply be threw away.
I suggest we can use those materials more creatively. For example, we can collect them and organize an exhibition (or exhibitions) of BBM creative postcards. They can also be kept somewhere as records of our participation. Or we can scan them and upload as a gallery collection. (I have seen many creative postcards in this website. But I guess not all people know how to use Photoshop to design pics. So it might be a way for those people to participate).
I am willing to do this.

Do you mean to have one single return address should it become undeliverable?

It is definately one way of doing this. (Maybe we can find someone willing to do this in Childress, Texas? It will be interesting!)
Or maybe we can ask the postoffice there to hold the mail, and find a time to pick it up? (but maybe they will be mad at it)
-
Bokano - You don't have to worry buddy, your english is just fine. And probably much better than some of my students! I wish you great success in grad school!

Hey, Cowboy Cody, thanks for your comfort :-[

Bokano it is a wonderful idea! But, you should be aware it might not work as you think it might. If the United States Post Office follows the law and regulations, they will send your postcard back to you marked, "ADDRESSEE UNKNOWN." And again a but, I like the idea so much I am going to do it. What the heck!
GREAT IDEA!!!

We might make the news! ;D

I doubt they have computers in Riverton, WY. More than likely they have a redneck postmaster. Riverton is a very small town on an Indian reservation.

waiting for reports on newspaper on BBM fans' postcards to Riveton~~

Bokano, this was a super idea.
I don't know how the post office might react. If publicity worked, though, if it made the news and showed how the Academy Awards is completely on another planet, perhaps the post office would even help us !

Wow that's a great idea!! I will definitely be doing this...and I'll get my best friend to do it too, she adores BBM (we went to see it together).

Mine went out today.

Another batch coming from me this week. Will try to get them out by Wednesday! Riverton...Here We Come...or as they use to say in the old days....

Dear Ennis,
This postcard is long overdue. Thanks for being a part of my life. Wishing you the best in Brokeback Mountain. Love. Ethan

Ethan - that is a terrific sentiment. Are you gonna put a return address on it?

Thanks, I didn't put a return address. Any reason why we should?
-
NO. I was hoping that's what you'd say. I don't want them to return it to me. I want them to have to handle it. Might even be a bonus for their tourism in that section of the state of Wyomin' as they call it.

When are you posting yours..coz I would have to post mine a few days before you..I have postcards already..and stamps..I can post mine tomorrow?

I think this is a great idea, and we should all do it.
The Post Office MUST hold any mail that arrives care of General Delivery for 30 days.
They can not arbitrarily make a determination that the person exists or does not exist.
So they will have to hold each of these pieces of mail for at least 30 days from each postmark. So in that sense, it will be as useful to send a couple of cards spread out a week apart, thus continuing this 30 day period.
IF there is a return address the PO MUST return the undelivered mail to the sender, marked as undelivered.
If there is NO return address, the mail will go to the "Dead Letter Office" where typically, enveloped mail, with no visible return address, is opened and searched inside for a possible return address, which if found is used to send the piece of mail back to its original sender. Barring finding an address through this process I am then not sure what happens to that mail, ie, whether it is at that point the mail is destroyed or whether it still must be held for some period of time.
In this vein, often local PO's will have to deal with letters addressed to "Santa Claus", and I believe they have some ruling that allows them to amass and hand-off that sort of mail to a single designated recipient.
So in the end, they may have to collect these nonreturnable pieces of mail, and hand them off to Focus Films, if a newsworthy story gets out over this, and/or Focus Films is made aware of it.
Just some thoughts to consider.
It's a good idea, and I'm gong to send a Post Card a week for several weeks.

If we want news coverage...then I suggest we find out what TV station (s) cover the Riverton area. Then we tell them what we've done. I say TV rather than radio, because a TV affiliate's story might get picked up in bigger markets.
Does anyone else think this might help? If so, I'd be willing to call and find out the TV station's name, address, phone number.

Sounds like a good idea, onebroken,
but I suggest you wait awhile until we can be sure that some, hopefully lots, of postcards have arrived and are being held there in Riverton.
Do not notify too early as if they go check it out and only find a few pieces of mail, it won't be deemed a worthwhile story and they will likely NOT go back to do a follow-up, unless later some other media catches it.
So my advice would be to wait, until say for instance, at least 21 days have gone by since the first cards were mailed out.
The PO has to hold that mail for 30 days.
I know that now is the Oscar buzz, but still I feel as above. Others may feel differently.
By the way, I intend to send at least one post card a week so as to keep extending the 30 day period the PO has to deal with this mail for our Ennis.
Jack in Maine

Jack_ME, onebroken, thanks for your posts.
I would love this postcard movement to get on US television at least. I think you both have good ideas. I have 2 postcards ready, I'll send them 2 weeks apart. ;D

Jack in Maine[/color]
Jack, I think you might be under a misconception here. By you sending a postcard a week it doesn't extend the 30 days for the cards sent previously. If you send a card 1/1/06 and then another on 1/8/06, the second card doesn't extend the 30 days for the first card. It still has a 30 day wait which will end on 2/1/06.
-
mine will go out tomorow as I only saw this today :)

Brothers, Sisters and Friends,
I sure hope you all aren't setting yourself up for another disappointment here. It sure would be great if the news got and aired a story about us sending cards to Ennis and Jack, to say the least. But, I hope you will all remember where these postcards are going. They are going to Riverton, Wyoming.
This is a very conservative State with good, hardworking, Christian conservatives living there. They may not like us trying to make their community "news worthy."
If you will check the gay guides, there are no gay bars in all of Wyoming. There are one or two gay "organizations" in the bigger cities but not much else. Remember also that Matthew Shepard was just brutally killed there a few short years ago in one of their larger cities.
In order for the news to get the story the postmaster of Riverton would have to alert them. The postmaster may not want that kind of publicity for his community.
All I am saying is, don't set yourself up for a let down. If it happens, GREAT! But, don't count too much on it.

Hi Patriot1,
as hard as it is to admit, you may be very right. :-\
But that won't stop me from sending cards. :) Surely people can stop taking themselves so seriously for a while ? An avalanche of cards at Riverton, Wyoming : let them have a chuckle ! go to the bar and have a beer and talk about it ! not be drama queens about everything !
Or are the Wyomingians so utterly heartless ?
-
I'll go ahead and do as Jack_ME suggested.
Everyone else has made good, valid points too.
If nothing comes of it, well, if we can't fix it, we'll have to stand it. :)
Going to the movie tonight. It's already been pulled from other theaters and I guess mine is next.
:'(

well, if it don't make the news, and frankly I don't care if it does than mayby what u are saying is the EXACT reason we should do it...
Oh absolutely we should do it!! I wasn't suggesting otherwise. My cards are already there I am sure.
I just don't want to see my family's hopes dashed yet again.

Patriot, I suppose I wasn't expressing myself clearly, or you've misunderstood me.
I know that a subsequent card won't extend the first piece of mail's 30 days, and that's exactly my point.
If I send one today, 30 days from today it will expire and the PO will have to process it.
If I send one next Tuesday, then 30 days from that date, they'll have to process another piece of mail, etc.
This can go on for as long as we like it too, and unless and until the local PO gets some sort of OK to hand over, or forward ANY SUBSEQUENT mail to a designated recipient who is NOT the addressee.
Therefore if this campaign continued long enough and with enough of a bulk of mail, eventually the PO, with the help of the local media, may be forced to involve Focus Films, etc.. which would likely also then get national media coverage....that's my idea behind a continued staggered postcard campaign.
Jack in Maine
And in reference to waiting 21 days or thereabouts before alerting the local media is simply to give enough time for a certain bulk of cards to arrive before the PO begins to eliminate them.
-
...that's my idea behind a continued staggered postcard campaign.
Jack in Maine
Yes Jack, I did misunderstand you. Sounds like a plan to me...go for it.

May i ask a question. Should we use the postcard that has “ennisjack.com” written on it? or just some random one?
Cos I will have crazy working schedules this month and will stay many different out-port.
Should I use the postcard from different countries? Just go with those that have “ennisjack.com” written on it?
Thanks

donnaread, welcome and thanks for posting. We just started this campaign and don't really know the result. We are hoping to generate some media attention when more people are sending the postcard to Riverton.
For me, it is not only the hope to generate some media attention but also makes me feel better. Hope you will join us.

Good idea, but you are also counting a small town's news media and postal workers to make this a big deal.
My suggestion is that, instead of burdening the small town's postal workers with the workload, we concentrate our efforts and send the cards to Focus Features
(Focus Features
Address: 100 Universal City Plz,
Universal City, CA 91608).
We can address the cards to Lee, Proulx, McMurtry, Linde, Schamus, Ossana, and etc., in addition to Ennis and Jack. They should be very encouraged to see loads and loads of such cards.
Until I can buy the BBM postcard (does anyone know where I can get one?), I will go ahead and send a card with any mountain on it for now.
I have never started such a mail campaign before. Does anyone have the expertise to share with us? Let's do this.

Not sure, but I think you have two different campaigns mixed up.
The date of the 14th is for a listing of all forum members who wanted to add their names to a single mail. (Not sure of the details as I'm not involved in the organizing of that)
This Riverton campaign is about each of us sending a Post Card via General Delivery to Ennis Del Mar, like Jack did after the 4 year separation.
I suggested, and am doing it, sending at least one card a week for several weeks. The PO there has to hold the mail it receives at General Delivery for 30 days. So even though the first cards will pass their 30 day limit, others will be coming in to perpetuate a rolling 30 days.
There was suggestion of someone here, after waiting 21 days from the start of our campaign (my suggestion so it might not be so), and then attempting to alert the Riverton area media about the campaign. By waiting this period of time, we can be more assured there would be some number of cards already there.
I've sent out my second batch. Hope others will send more cards on a weekly basis too.

Jack_ME is correct. The date is for the name and location list which went out on March 15.

This Riverton postcard is a different campaign. Thanks, Jack_ME for clarifying.

Jack_Me, I was the one who suggested trying to get the attention of local media, but I'm not sure if the idea went over well.
Let me know if you still want me too, and if so, when. One thing is that I keep seeing the results of the poll of people who've sent cards to Riverton and it doesn't seem like many did.
-
just to make sure the point got across I sent out 2 of the same postcard to Riverton, one said " be there" the other said " You bet " covering both side of the track
-
Hey all, how's this GD post card campaign going?
As onebroken says, the poll at the top of this thread doesn't show many. 28 I think. Seems we should have generated more than that. I do know that the nature of the poll is such that I could only record sending one. And I"ve sent 3 spaced apart so far. Going to send more too. For the minimal cost....it makes me feel a part of Ennis's life! Which is fun...and if we can get enough of a bunch there, maybe it would get picked up in the media.
Do you want to look into that, onebroken, since it was your idea to contact the media? You can see what the options are for the area.
Maybe we need to get a notice of this PC campaign on the main page, Ethan? I'm surprised that there isn't more interest and energy in this campaign but maybe folks think it's too silly? I sure don't.
Later on, I am going to send one or two post cards WITH a return address.....a friend suggested that to me...saying that it would be a great souvenir of this time and BBM's theater run. He's right. I'll get the PC back with "unknown addressee" or "recipient unknown" or something.
March 1 was the first post in this thread. Assuming a day or so for folks to get started, it is coming onto the three week period. If we've got any kind of critical mass of cards there, and it would be nice to know that...but not sure how we could find out....then the media should be contacted BEFORE the first 30 day period has ended. So definitely before April Fools Day.....and I don't like the association, HOWEVER, that might be the clincher to get the story some attention.
(Meaning while we didn't mean it as just a joke, it might not be a bad thing if that's what gets it some coverage.)
Other opinions? Ideas? Suggestions?

Jack_ME, thanks for posting. Yes we do need to get this campaign going. I would not be too concerned with the poll.
I did mention this campaign to the dave forum and ask them to pass the words. I don't know if this has generated any interest on the other part.
Also, I don't know how "general delivery" would work for members oversea or if the "general delivery" postcards ever get to leave the country.
If others have the ideas, I'd like to hear them. Thanks.

Ethan, Care Of General Delivery is a VALID United States Mail address, so it shouldn't matter at all where the mail is coming from. You can have mail sent to you anywhere in the country via that method. It's an old and still valid means of collecting mail without a residence. As long as the town, state and Zip is on the card.

Thanks, Jack. It is good to know for our members oversea.
Let's keep the postcard rollling.

Beautiful John! It is very appropriate.
Some of my cards sent out on the various campaigns were of Mt. Katahdin, the highest peak here in Maine, and the Northern End of the Appalachain Trail. But no sheep!
Thanks for sharing that picture!

I'll start digging around and see what I can find out about TV. I'll report back and then we can decide how we want to approach them. Ok?
-
Here's some info:
Cheyenne is the state capital and they have a CBS station, KGWN.
Casper is much closer to Riverton. They have an ABC station. Their website has at least 3 cowboys on it along with a poll as to whether Bush should be impeached. http://www.k2tv.com/
Casper also has a CBS station, KGWC.
Riverton has a PBS station, KCWC, but I doubt that would do us any good.
So, do we compose an email? Call?
On a side note:
When I googled Wyoming Map, I was directed to the TEXAS Agricultural Extension Service State Maps Page. ;D
And, the high temp today in Riverton will be 38 degrees F.
Ennis, outside, shivers, teeth chatter uncontrollably.
Jack: "Ennis!"
Ennis: "Wut?"
Jack: "Quit your hammerin' and get over here."

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I sent the ABC station an email just now. I'll follow it up with a fax. I mentioned ennisjack.com and also the fact that BBM will be released on DVD April 4. I asked that if they decided to air the story, that they drop me a brief email telling me they did so that I might pass the information along to national and international fans outside their viewing area.
If they respond, I'll let you know.

You. Are. Just. GREAT!!! W O W !

Thanks Onebroken, for doing this. I wonder how it will go. I sent out another card yesterday. They should have at the least a dozen or so, and hopefully lots more.

Onebroken, did you ever get any response from anyone out Wyoming way?
I've mailed a couple more cards. I wonder how many they did get in all? Being actual official mail, the PO can't just give out information to anyone that asks so we'd really need a media type to "do a story" and then maybe get them to talk about it when it was made clear that it was a promotional campaign.
If you've heard anything let us know please. Thanks,

For me it has been more than 30 days since I sent my cards. Haven't gotten them back. Has anyone else?
-
I sent mine long time ago. But it is non-returnable because I didn't put a return address.

I didn't put a return address on mine either, Patriot1. I did put a return address on the birthday card I sent to Heath, and since it hasn't returned, I presume it was delivered. Now I've got the BBM postcards (again, 1000 thanks, Ethan). Riverton will be hearing from me again !
-
I sent mine out weeks ago but I didn't put a return address on it.

It is time for me to send another one. It will be out tomorrow.

the Post Master in Riverton must think we're crazy ;D! ^*() But I think the point we're trying to make is becoming apparent: these two young men (and they will be forever young in our hearts and souls) are as real to us as any two characters of fiction and/or the screen <^(.
-
This is just such an awesome idea!
I'll be sending a postcard myself tomorrow..all the way from Australia! From the most isolated city in the world..Perth Western Australia...All the way to Wyoming. :c)
