Title: Goofs *spoiler alert*
Post by: dirtbiker on Jan 06, 2006, 01:00 AM
Here are some interesting goofs to look for in your next viewing ;)

Continuity: In the bus station, Ennis is eating apple pie. In one shot, the crust is all gone and he's just eating the apples. In the next shot, half of the slice is back (including all the crust).

Continuity: Ennis puts numbers on his mailbox. In a subsequent scene, the numbers are gone.

Continuity: In the grocery store, when Ennis brings his daughters to Alma so he can rush off to work, one of the little girls knocks over a store display of stacks of peanuts in jars. Many of the jars fall and break all over the floor, but moments later, in a different angle shot, when Alma is apologizing, there are jars neatly lined up on display, far fewer of them broken than there were in the jar-breaking shot.

Continuity: The last time Jack and Ennis meet, Jack has a mustache which disappears and reappears between shots.
(I think this one is an error - isn't this the scene where he flashbacks to the 1st time they were up on the mountain?)

that's interesting, I heard someone else say they saw a microphone in another shot.  I also note
Heath's Australian accent kick in ever so slightly when he talks to Alma when he drops the kids off
at the store.

Well I forgive them, it must be hard when you finish shooting a movie and then have to edit it all
and keepit ALL straight.

You are good, dirtbiker. How many viewings did they take you to notice these?  ;D After 4th viewing, I still miss them.

Just came back from seeing the movie for 2nd time, and I can honestly say that I don't think either of these two continuity errors are correct.  I think the amount of pie appears consistent (although the viewing angle changes), and the mailbox always has the numbers on the one side...most of the views are of the other side facing closer to the trailer.  Just what I saw.

the peanut bottles I did see, and the pie.  The stash and the numbers on the mailbox I didn't see.

So many of us have seen the film more than twice, so we are obviously going to discover little problems with the piece. It is quite a compliment to the film that viewers are paying such close attention to minute details. For instance, Ledger forgivably does wander into his native accent with the the words "got" but especially "church" and "shirt" (When Alms asks for cigarettes when he and Jack are off for their first reunion trip). I look forward to the DVD to see what Ang says about other little problems. When Ennis leaves Jack's parent's home, from within the door closes quickly, but from the outside the doors closes gently and slowly. What a great film...how many films receive this much attention for viewers..I guess we don't want to stop thinking about the film. :)

True the numbers on the mailbox are presumably still there as the subsequent shot s are from the other side.  (wonder what the significance of 17 is), but there are definitely many more unbroken peanut jars still on the shelf than what we saw fall and break.  I'm sure of that.

In the Texas thanksgiving scene I think a crew member is partly visible on the extreme edge of a shot. I'll be looking for this one next time.

A good place to look for bloopers is in reflective items. Sometimes you can see crewmembers or mike booms or  lights in mirrors, windows, or on shiny surfaces. Lord of the Rings had a few of these.

Missed that!  You just cost me another $9.50.  Like, I really needed another excuse to HAVE TO see the movie... again.  Soon, they will just print my name on the back of a seat.

Something I can't quite figure out... In the great reunited scene with the passionate kisses, Alma looks through the screened door and sees them, but, in the many exterior shots of the house I can't see how she would have had the view we are to believe she is having...

Don't get me wrong,  I LOVE this scene, Ennis' rippled grin, Jack's mouth looks like a horse eating a sugar cube out of your hand, the thrashing about, and squeezing, and oh, well, ... anyway...

Comments?

I think she can, am looking at trailer and montage video, and clearly remember the outside structure...remember the swings...and I'm sure she could see...

I so need to see BM at the movies again...I should have gone this morning! >:(

...but, don't you see... We are looking up the stairs at the boys, and the house is on the right and the handrail is on the left.  From Alma's view looking down the stairs, the house would be on the right and the handrail on the left.  It's opposite, is it not?  Maybe not, I'm going from memory and frankly the scenery wasn't of paramount importance at that particular moment.  Let's see it again and try to pay closer attention.

7 times viewing...thanksgiving scene..when the Father-in-law moves to turn the TV off the second time..there is an odd shadow on the right extreme of the screen..its the son's face, or at least the edge of it. Is that what people see? I cannot see any extras. The window does reflect alot of moving around of the characters..I would like to know where the extra is in the scene.

Also, the exterior of their apartment above the Laundromat does work for Alma to see our heroes kissing in the stairwell..the kissing stairwell is immediately behind the swing set....

...but the stairs go in the other direction...  We see behind them another stairway, one that is different from the open riser stair that Ennis comes down.  At the bottom of the stairs is a wall behind the swing set.  I guess I will go to see it again tomorrow. Lucky me, lucky me!!!  and, just so you know I wouldn't suprise me to find that I am crazzzy after all.  Still, something doesn't seen right.  More on this tomorrow...

I was confused at first. When the reunited boys are kissing you can see Ennis's stairwell behind them. You'll  see there are two stairwells..one leading to Ennis's place and another behind the wall behind the swing set...you are lucky to see it again though. I have to wait until Friday!

Yes, you see two stairwells, but when Ennis is coming down the stairs you see the corner of two walls in that location.  Help me with this one!!!  Check it out again and let's hear what you see.

Ok I have watched trailer and logo presentation humpth times and everytime I can see that they are in 2 diff places, and that Alma could really see from where she was. I did a sketch but it's pretty bad...so I'll either create a design one or post my hand made one at some point...I wish you could see what I see.
I always pay attention to details (was trained to do so *another story) and this one I'm sure off: Alma could see Ennis and Jack together...!

It just occurred to me that Alma marries the grocer, Monroe, in the movie.  But, in the short story her husband's name is Bill.  Maybe her marrying the grocer is an elaboration for the movie.  So, I take back what I said about her possibly having had an affair with Monroe while she and Ennis were still married...

Bill Monroe?
she does marry the shop owner in the short story...(to your question about Alma having an affair ? Can you blame her? Not me.)
Maybe they just used the surname to describe him? Just a thought!

Yeah,  Well ...when Ennis (Mr. Man) drops off the kids at the store, he asks, "Monroe, where's Alma?"  He wouldn't call the guy by his last name, I wouldn't think he knew him well enough.  In the short story Alma says, "I'm gonna yell for Bill"

No I wouldn't blame her for having a bit on the side, I'd be happy for her if she found real reciprocated love, but which is it?  Bill or Monroe?  Or maybe she's... well, she doesn't come off that way.

I think they changed the name of Alma's new husband to Monroe.  Monroe sounds better than Bill in my opinion.

Is this a goofup?: Ennis stands outside Aguirre's trailer waiting to get a job. Then this train passes. It looks as though there is a track right in front of him........ but then when Jack comes by his truck/car you can see the train actually going in the side far of the trailer.........and Jack parks his car in front of Aquirre's trailer. So in front of Aguirre's trailer there is actually no Rail track right?

here is the list:  notice the one about the wood chop--i wish i had never read this....i have seen movie a couple or three times since:
Goofs for
Brokeback Mountain (2005)
Crew or equipment visible: When Ennis and his wife are fighting at one point they are passing their daughter back and forth. During this back and forth, her pajama top hikes up a bit and you can see her microphone cord.

Continuity: Jack is chopping wood when Aguirre approaches to give news of his sick uncle. Jack places the next log on the chopping block as he turns to speak to Aguirre. After the conversation is over and Jack turns back to chopping, the log is gone and he replaces the log that was never chopped.

Continuity: When Jack is drinking a beer in the bar with Ennis, there is some type of cork in his bottle. In the next scene, it's not there.

Crew or equipment visible: You can see the microphone wire exposed from underneath Ennis's daughter's pajamas after Ennis briefly holds her and then hands her back to his wife.

I checked the imdb for goofs a few days ago, and still don't pay attention to them when I watch the movie

As for the reunion scene, pay attention at where Ennid And Jack are when they hug. Ennis pushes Jack backwards - meaning that the kiss happens more or less in the same place where Ennis kicks the bin after asking his daugthers if they want a push on the swing. You see a stair behind Ennis and Jack kissing - but that's not the same one leading to the del Mar apartment - it's 90° rotate.  Geee hard to describe in words  :)

Thanks for responding to this one Ethan.  It is driving me stark raving mad!  I know it's not the same one (stair) that goes to their flat but why would there be another?  How many apartments can there be over a laundromat in a small town, and if there are two stairs, why?  One stair could have served both or more units.  Finally,  I know that the landing on the stiars where the boys are *busy* is seen in other scenes and there is no other stair there, just an inside clapboard sided corner.  Here I do again...

OMG, Jim's gone off!

Let me see if I can find some photos to demo.

Oh yes, I can see that.  I just couldn't get iclear that there was another stair behind the wall.  Stairway to heaven ,maybe?

You know, it is just indicative of how people get different things from this movie.  We all see the same sights and hear the same dialog and music, but it has varying meanings and evokes a wide ranging feelings from us.  Then we make it into what we want it to be and stand behind our interpretations.  So thought provoking. So rare.  So rich.

Thanx everyone for the insight and the illustration.

OK, I've got another one for you.  I just noticed this during the last time I saw BBM (5th time).  When Ennis is in his late 30's, he's driving home his daughter Alma Jr. from having met Cassie at the bar.  They're in his old pickup, and they're driving by a slew of houses here and there.  At one point, while the camera is pointing toward Ennis while he's talking, his truck passes by a house with two cars parked in front of a garage.  One of the cars is clearly a late model navy blue Dodge Neon!  Late model as in 2000 or newer!  This is supposed to be no later than 1983!  There were no Dodge Neons around then...Whoops!

Yep! The Texas thanksgiving scene, It was just the some window reflections of Jack and the father-in-law.

from this link:  a list  (aside from alma jr. as a toddler having big blue eyes - grew up to be alma jr. with big brown eyes!  whoops......i noticed that after about 21st time for first time, so don't feel bad ethan,  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0388795/goofs    oh and where did jack and ennis spend the nite after they were told by aguirre that he will see them tomorrow and truck them to the jump off...where did they sleep - ennis couldn't afford a hotel, i do not think?  jack had a 2 seater truck.  so???
Goofs for
Brokeback Mountain (2005)

Crew or equipment visible: When Ennis and his wife are fighting at one point they are passing their daughter back and forth. During this back and forth, her pajama top hikes up a bit and you can see her microphone cord.

Continuity: Jack is chopping wood when Aguirre approaches to give news of his sick uncle. Jack places the next log on the chopping block as he turns to speak to Aguirre. After the conversation is over and Jack turns back to chopping, the log is gone and he replaces the log that was never chopped.

Continuity: The evening Jack and Ennis first both spend the night at camp they are drinking from a bottle of whiskey. That bottle, which is only half full to start, refills itself through out the evening. At the end of the evening both guys are very intoxicated but the bottle is fuller then it was earlier.

Continuity: Ennis helps Jack to start his truck, then improperly closes the hood (you can see it isn't properly latched. Shortly afterward, Jack gets in his truck to drive away and the hood is fully closed.

Continuity: When Jack parks his truck before going to meet Joe Aguirre for the first time he parks it head-in (facing the building.) When he and Ennis come down at the end of the season and start the truck it is facing the other way.

Continuity: When Jack is driving away after the pair's first summer on the mountain, the shape and size of the abrasion on his left cheekbone change in each shot.

Anachronisms: When Cassie dances with Ennis the first time, the jukebox is playing Steve Earle's "The Devil's Right Hand". In the movie it is supposed to be the late 70s, but that song wasn't released until his album Copperhead Road came out in 1988.

Continuity: When Cassie is confronting Ennis at the diner about his disappearance, he is eating the last remains of a piece of pie. When she gets up from the table to leave, we see the plate again and the piece of pie is now intact.

Factual errors: Early in the film (1963 Wyoming) a train is seen crossing the screen without a caboose. Cabooses were required by law on all trains into the 1980s.

maybe this is why they didn't get best make up or best editing award nomination!!!!   ;D

When Alma Jr, made fallen glass jars in shop, a maid parts it finds on the ground, while during the following sequence, the shelf had just 2 or 3 jars missing.

Continuity: The last time Jack and Ennis meet, Jack has a mustache which disappears and reappears between shots.
(I think this one is an error - isn't this the scene where he flashbacks to the 1st time they were up on the mountain?)

In the screenplay, the scene where Jack is getting beaten is from Ennis' point of view. At the  time of the phone call to Lureen, Jack wazs 39 and had a moustache but Ennis envisions the scene with a young un-moustached Jack, the way he probably pictured him in his mind.

I still can't believe Jack was killed although I know there's a good case for it.

Think I discovered another goof brothers, sisters and friends.

In the opening scenes with Jack and Ennis waiting outside the hiring hall, in one scene (Jack shown from crotch to top of head) Jack's sleeves are rolled down and cuffs are snapped closed.  In another shot (full length leaning against truck) the cuff of the sleeves are rolled up snaps open.

OH yeah, this is one thread I'd better try to avoid too :p

I saw 3 goofs in my 3rd viewing, not counting the visible face of Jake's stunt when rodeoing (at my 2nd viewing). Then, I decided to let go and enjoy the show, otherwise it gets very distracting...  :P

Here's another one I think I saw:

When Ennis and Jack have their confrontation on their last camping trip, there is a fly on the right side of Ennis' face when we see the close up of his face that is shot from behind Jack, but when we see Jack's face as shown from behind Ennis' right side in the next shot, the fly is gone. From the angle of the camera shot from behind Ennis, I think the fly would be visible in both those shots.
But when its back to seeing Ennis' face, its there again and then gone again when we see Jack's face.

Hello brothers, sisters and friends,

I have no idea why I didn't notice this before.  It is a huge goof.

Ah Ha!  So you noticed it also.  And it suddenly reappears when he falls down.  The only problem is I didn't see a camera change after it switched to Ennis's view of Jack jumping around.  The bottle was in his left hand when he started jumping around, camera angle change, now his hat is in his left hand.  But, because of no further camera changes i just dismissed it as my not being able to see it because of the hat. I tell you though, if it is still in his hand he must have spilled everthing that was in the bottle the way he was waiving his arms.

well I remember the bottle vanishes at some point then  resurface once he's down, but what the heck, these are some minutes details, as far as Alma Jr.'s eyes being blue when she is a child...  there is truly the possibility that they can change as you grow older, I know I had brown eyes as a child and now they are green, one of my Brother had blue eyes and now they are , one blue and one brown.  Just enjoy the movie and cry your heart out!  I sure do

someone HAS to tell me--why didn't someone airbrush the white goopy stuff that is on ennis' undereye in his last scene with cassie?  that should have never happened.  that is all my eyes can focus on unless I try really hard not to look during that scene (the apple pie scene).

Actually the peeling skin around his eye is pretty realistic for some men who have been out in the weather most of their lives---my first boss had it, and it also peeled around his ears like that too esp. late summer.

I also think that about the whiskey bottle refilling itself----I am thinking they probably cracked more than one bottle open, or brought a couple of opened and a couple sealed, so it may not actually be the same bottle, just the same brand.

Chrissy

That is a blood filled mosquito on Ennis neck, and either his head movements displaced it, or it got filled up and flew away to lay eggs---the other one you see is a different bug---there are several of them flying around the guy's heads you can see them in and around their heads/faces throughout the scene.

The only goof that really got me was the fact that Jack is riding a buckskin gelding----and all through the timeframe on the mountain---both of them keep calling him a mare and or filly.
Sorry guys---that she is really a HE!   So when he first is on it and starts crowhopping some, and he comes up with the "I doubt there's filly that can throw me."   I am cracking up right away.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0388795/goofs Brokeback Mountain (2005) [/b]

Continuity: When Jack parks his truck before going to meet Joe Aguirre for the first time he parks it head-in (facing the building.) When he and Ennis come down at the end of the season and start the truck it is facing the other way.

At the end of the season the truck was parked in a completely dfferent spot than it was when Jack first pulled into the lot. Not only was it facing forward, but it was parked next to a wall. And he was facing the road.

My guess is that the wall was a buidling to the left of Aguirre's trailer when you're facing it. When Jack pulled out, he turned right which would have sent him in the direction that he came from. I assumed the truck was parked in a different place to get it out of the way because they were going to be gone for the summer and Jack had parked the just outside the trailer.

Just because we didn't see them use or move the truck after they left Aguirre's and went to the bar doesn't mean that it stayed in the same place the whole summer.

Next time you go to see the movie, watch when Jack and Ennis are in the bar.  Jack puts an empty bottle to his lips, supposedly drinks from the bottle and then takes the bottle away from his lips and you hear a swishing sound like the beer falling back to the bottom of the bottle.   Only the bottle is empty.  Was when he picked it up.

No, it is not Jack swishing. :-)

When they've spent the summer up there and Jack is going to start his car, he get help from Ennis...I think it is by using start cables... then the motor STARTS... and THEN they say byebye but at that point, the motor is NOT on (as it was in the previous clip).

A friend of me told med about this scene after seeing the movie. Can anyone confirm this "mistake" in the film?

Before their reunion (literally) Jack is not sure where Ennis is so he sends him a postcard via General Delivery.

Ennis sends Jack a post card saying "You bet.

Jack then drives up to Ennis' apartment above the laundromat.

How did Jack know where Ennis lived?  Ennis' post card only had a return address of

Ennis del Mar
Riverton, Wyoming

So how did Jack know he lived above the laundromat?

Continuity: Ennis puts numbers on his mailbox. In a subsequent scene, the numbers are gone.

here is the list:

Continuity: When Jack is drinking a beer in the bar with Ennis, there is some type of cork in his bottle. In the next scene, it's not there.

quote]

This was posted a while ago and tonight when I saw the movie again I noticed it.

It wasn't a cork, it was Ennis' finger sticking up from behind the bottle right over the bottle opening.

He asked around---like he did when Ennis got divorced? Were there not #'s on the return address? Maybe I am thinking of the deceased card.  :'(

Yes, I suppose he could have asked around.  Not smart on Ennis' part if that is true.
Nope, no numbers; take a look.

I don't remember Jack's address being on the postcard he sent to Ennis. Did I miss it?

When Ennis was writing out the "You Bet" postcard I thought it looked like he was copying Jack's address from a piece of paper.

Well chrissy323, you have just discovered another problem. Jack's address was not on the postcard he sent to Ennis. The postcard Jack sent was a picture postcard so the address couldn't have been on the other side.  So, where did Ennis get Jack's address?

(https://ennisjack.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi43.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe359%2FPatriotOne%2FJackPostcardtoEnnis-Reunion.jpg&hash=ad8d40fe7d2b4ca761ca3a0a84bc3806b650769d)

You are exactly correct chrissy323.  Jack's address was written on brown paper.  Where did Ennis get it and why would he write it on brown paper if it was somewhere on Jack's postcard?

On Jack's postcard, there is write "TX Childress", so Ennis find his address on the phone book ? No ? And then write the address on paper.

That "brown piece of paper" looks like an envelope. Maybe Ennis got the address from the postal worker in the Post Office.  Interesting...the whole General Delivery thing is very interesting to me. The world must have seemed a much smaller place then. Great thread here.

There were lots of places that had no mail carrier delivery. Especially in times when places where few and far between and it wouldn't make sense to have someone try to deliver mail on a daily basis.  People used to go "to town" to get their mail from the post office.

That's right bnjmn3 and chrissy323.  From the time Benjamen Franklin and I started the United States Post Office  ;D  you could send me a letter in care of (c/o) General Delivery and I could then go to my local post office and ask for any mail addressed to me at General Delivery and they would give it to me.  I am not sure if they will do that today.

I missed all the other goofs, too involved in the emotions of the movie.  But this one I could not ignore.  It was very distracting.

I can swear that when Alma, Jr. tells her dad about her wedding she says that Jr. will be singing.  This doesn't make sense.  Am I right?  - Nancy

I'm not sure if this is a goof or not but Jack's truck has Texas license plates on it as he drives away after they come down from BBM. The next spring it has a different plate on it. It's blue but I can't see the state. Jack wouldn't have had Texas plates til he went after Aguirre throught him out of the trailor.

I read today on another website that the song that Ennis and Cassie were dancing to, The Devil's Right Hand was not released until 1988 on Steve Earl's album, Copperhead Road.  That scene takes place in the 1970's.

Also according to this website, cabooses were reguired by law on all trains into the 1980's?  There was no caboose on the train in the opening scene in 1963.

Frankly, Scarlett, I don't give a damn!  It was still the best movie I"ve ever seen.                      - Nancy

I have looked and looked and looked at the last two cars of that train.  Sometimes I see two passenger cars and other times I don't.  If they are passenger cars, then a caboose is not needed.

Often in the very rural West with a bunch of local stops of freight and passengers you will have a few freight cars and a few passenger cars on the same train.

But, I guess we will have to wait until the DVD is out for everyone to look at those last two cars.

Haven't seen this one before so I will add it.

Jack and Ennis are wrestling and Jack gives Ennis a bloody nose.  Jack is trying to see what he did and stop the bleeding.

Jack is facing Ennis, camera is behind and to the right of Ennis.  Jack has his right hand behind Ennis's head. Camera angle changes to behind Jack on his left.  Jack's right hand and arm are now in front of Ennis's face trying to stop the blood with his sleeve.

You will probably have to wait for the DVD as it is not one you would remember.

Another goof is in the Jimbo (rodeo clown) scene.

Jack is sitting at the bar. Jimbo comes and sits down.  Jack gets up, picks up his glass of beer with his left hand and while walking toward Jimbo he transfers it to his right hand.

Camera angle changes to face Jimbo, Jack comes into the scene but his beer in back in his left hand.

You are right the whiskey bottle shows up back in Jack's left hand and the hat is back on his head right as he is FALLING DOWN backwards.... So.... the whisky bottle starts in his left hand m disappears while he is 'waving to the girls' with his hat, the the whisky bottle reappears back in his left hand and the hat shows up back on the head See these twso pics

The "goof" about the numbers on the mailbox is wrong, because they are just showing the other side of the mailbox.  And you are right about the "missing mustache" scene, it IS the flashback scene.  The other goofs you mentioned are goofs, but this film is pretty damn close to perfect!

I noticed this watching the DVD yesterday.  Ennis is pulling the mules behind him, when he comes upon the bear.  The horse rears,  Ennis falls off and the mules are running ahead of him.  I've been thinking about this.  I have thought about whether the mules could have gotten around them to get past.  I think this is unlikely.  I think the normal response of the mules would have been to back up away from the rearing horse, falling man and the bear.  Also, the trail looks a little tight here for them to get around.  Maybe, I'm wrong.

Post by: jerasjr on Apr 05, 2006, 10:07 AM
You are talking about two shots, initially a slighlty side on perspective of Ennis and the mules - the other from the bears "point-of-view" - the mules do run away from the bear, the horse and the falling Ennis.

I noticed watching the DVD that the mules' lead lines are tied to the saddle horn on Ennis's horse, so how do they get ahead of the horse?  I really don't care.  Still the best movie I've ever seen.

Someone mentioned earlier here that Alma, Jr.'s eyes are blue as a four year old in the grocery store and they are brown when she is older.  I just noticed that 4 year old Alma is played by Brooklyn Proulx.  I am sure someone must have pointed this out before.  So,  I guess they used a blue eyed Alma, because she was related to Annie Proulx?  Does anyone know how they are related?

I noticed an "almost" goof.  When they have the fight before leaving BBM, after Ennis decks Jack...Heath almost wipes his nose on his LEFT sleeve, but caught himself and wiped it on his RIGHT sleeve, the sleeve that would be down inside Jack's sleeve, when he finds the shirts.     :D

Donna

You are right Donna. He looks down at his left sleeve as if he were getting ready to wipe his nose and then remembers and uses his right sleeve.  Great catch.

Superb! That would have made things awkward later ;D

I can't believe how many little things folk have picked up on here - I never notice these things in movies..

Actually it probably wouldn't have made any difference.  There was already blood on his right sleeve for the shirt scene and besides, there is nothing that says there had to be blood on either sleeve for the shirt scene in the closet.  All Ennis had to do was find the shirts with his inside of Jack's.  Blood or no blood, I still would have burst into tears.   :D

That's a fair point. It doesn't matter whether the shirts were clean or dirty - all that matters is that Jack kept them, and the way he kept them, one inside the other.

From the book:

Quote
The closet was a shallow cavity with a wooden rod braced across, a faded cretonne curtain on a string closing it off from the rest of the room. In the closet hung two pairs of jeans crease-ironed and folded neatly over wire hangers, on the floor a pair of worn packer boots he thought he remembered. At the north end of the closet a tiny jog in the wall made a slight hiding place and here, stiff with long suspension from a nail, hung a shirt. He lifted it off the nail. Jack's old shirt from Brokeback days. The dried blood on the sleeve was his own blood, a gushing nosebleed on the last afternoon on the mountain when Jack, in their contortionistic grappling and wrestling, had slammed Ennis's nose hard with his knee. He had staunched the blood which was everywhere, all over both of them, with his shirtsleeve, but the staunching hadn't held because Ennis had suddenly swung from the deck and laid the ministering angel out in the wild columbine, wings folded.
The shirt seemed heavy until he saw there was another shirt inside it, the sleeves carefully worked down inside Jack's sleeves. It was his own plaid shirt, lost, he'd thought, long ago in some damn laundry, his dirty shirt, the pocket ripped, buttons missing, stolen by Jack and hidden here inside Jack's own shirt, the pair like two skins, one inside the other, two in one. He pressed his face into the fabric and breathed in slowly through his mouth and nose, hoping for the faintest smoke and mountain sage and salty sweet stink of Jack but there was no real scent, only the memory of it, the imagined power of Brokeback Mountain of which nothing was left but what he held in his hands.

Annie Proulx did not tell us on which sleeve of his old Brokeback Mountain worn shirt Ennis first saw blood when he looked in Jack's boyhood closet. But, the drama of how he found it is more important. I do think that if Ennis had not gotten blood from his nosebleed on his shirt, Jack would not have had possession of it. Ennis had changed shirts when they were packing up the camp things and he probably packed his few clothing possessions last. That is why Jack was able to take the shirts; either that, or Jack was the one who bundled up Ennis' belongings for him.

The text does not say that the shirts were on a hanger; they were hanging from a nail. I think that if they had been on a hanger, they might have not been hidden in the kind of closet that Annie Proulx described. It was not a regular constructed closet as one might see in the home of people; the "cretonne curtain" was made of heavy cotton upholstery fabric.

I do like the sniffing of the shirts by Ennis in hopes of recovering the scent which had the memory of activity on BbM and Jack's special odor/aroma. There is something special about the natural smells from a man with whom you were in love. That kind of "stink" isn't really offensive to one's nose.

Well, found another one.

Last day on Brokeback.  Ennis hits Jack. Jack falls to the ground on his right side.  Ennis walks away.  Camera looks down at Jack on the ground.  Problem is, Jack is now on his left side.

Title: BBM Movie Mistakes
Post by: dresden on Jun 04, 2006, 02:17 AM
This site lists mistakes made in movies. It lists 12 for BBM. The ONLY one I noticed watching the film (before reading this article) was the one with the broken peanuts in the store. That one was terribly obvious. OK don't shoot me I'm just the messenger!

Thanks for the link.  The couple of mistakes that bug me are when lines are obviously dubbed later, and the actor's lips aren't moving or are out of sync with the dialogue in the movie.  Three examples:

1.  In FNIT, if you look closely, Ennis' lips don't move when he says "What are you doing?"

2.  The last scene of Ennis and Jack together, when Ennis says his "boys like you"line, his lips are out of sync with the dialogue;

3.  Also, during this last scene, Ennis' lips don't move when he says "I can't stand this anymore, Jack."

Now, I know these are small points, but I'm surprised someone didn't catch them and correct them before the movie's release.

And in th erodeo scene, "Jack's" free arm changes from shot to shot.

But I only notice these things in slo-mo - didn't see most of them, other than the nuts and the mic wire, in the cinema. I guess I've never watched a film so often or with so much attention - wonder if there are as many goofs in other movies?
Title: Interesting Edit Catch...
Post by: Jim_in_Philly on Jun 25, 2006, 09:23 PM
I have a habit of watching good movies over and over til I've internalized pretty much ALL of it.  :) Well, now that I'm getting past the initial emotional grasp of this movie, I noticed something tonight.

In the scene when Ennis is packing up to go up to Brokeback with Jack (the morning after the motel scene)...take a close look at Junior in Alma's arms as Ennis leans in and kisses her (Alma) good-bye. As soon as he walks past the girls, Junior's stomach is exposed and there's a black chord against her skin.

I'm thinking it's a microphone chord that was missed in editing.  Anyone else see it too?  :)

yes, and you will find that in the mistakes and blunders thread...

Fascinating!  I've seen the film countless times and never noticed that cord!  Just goes to show how the eyes and brain are not always alert to every detail; and the visual emphasis of a scene tends to carry the eyes in a planned, particular way so even the director and other onlookers tend not to see mistakes, which, once noticed, appeare as glaring oversights!

Don't know if this was mentioned but when jack and Ennis leave Signal for the summer there are two pickups parked on either side of the street a dark green 1950's International and a lite blue 1962-63 ford with horse trailer on the oppisite side. They are both there in the same spot when Jack drives up the next summer.

Maybe their drivers are just very lazy  ;)

Thanks for pointing that out.

Why you are absolutely correct. The only thing is they are parked a little further up the street. Only explanation I can come up with is that maybe the owners work in one of those buildings.  Good eye!

One of the things that bothers me is that in the sequence where they set up camp, they've built a triangular framework to support the bag of food they hoist up to keep it away from bears. This is clearly shopwn as being near the camp-fire. But I can't see it in the later campsite sequences, and when they more camp it doersn;t reappear - do bears stay on the lower slopes and not come up the mountain? Like coyotes seem to be found only above a certain level?

I've also never figured out why they are shown sawing branches off trees in the same sequence - later they find plenty of wood just by picking up branches that have been blown down. Like the two buckets of water that never appear again - that whole sequence is clearly there to establish their preparations for the camp and the way they have to live/work - but none of it seems to figure again.

Thanks for the welcome. i think it was just shot the  same day

It was shot the same day for sure since they used the same sets but the fact some people working around and parking always in the same spots makes sense, specially in a one horse town like Signal but, I agree it's a goof.

Was this mentioned?   When Ennis and Alma are playing in the snow after sledding down the mountain, Ennis's hat is covering & then not covering his ears between shots.
