I have checked through the other topics and I didn't see this one posted.
Not counting Ennis(Heath) and/or Jack(Jake), who was your favorite character (or performance) in Brokeback Mountain and why?
My favorite character was Jack's Mom (sadly, she doesn't even get a name in the short story or the movie). Roberta Maxwell plays Jack's mom in the movie. She's only on screen for a couple minutes and she only has a couple of lines, but I just loved her performance. Her character was so believable I felt like I really knew her.
***note from chameau, I added a poll***
-
That's a tough one!!!!
favourite as in acting?
Jack's mum, followed by, really closely, the sheep...no I'm kidding...Lureen.
Roberta M. for obvious reasons, her acting was superb.
Anne H. because she portrayed Lureen throughout the years, and the more I watch the movie , the more I like her subtle acting...
-
Honestly, I have a soft spot for Lureen or LaShawn. But Cassie comes pretty close, especially as the sexy siren in that first scene with Ennis. I agree with Froggy that Jack's mom is superb, but that scene is so sad that it is hard for me to call it a "favorite". The same would hold true for Alma Jr. And what about Alma in the entire reunion sequence?
Too difficult!
-
This is tough, because all of the characters mentioned so far - Jack's mum, Cassie, Lureen, show flashes of true brilliance, but the one that consistently moves me most would have to be Jack mum. She makes me bawl every single time! :\'(
-
Roberta Maxwell, definitely
-
Yep, Jack's mum (mom for those of you on the other side of the pond!) for me too. She has few lines but she manages to convey so much feeling and compassion with what she does say. I think I like her most because of all the "other" characters, I think she's the one who would have understood the love that the boys shared and would have tried to help them.
After her I'm not sure. Probably anyone apart from John Twist, Randall or LaShawn.
-
I like Lureen!
I love both Anne and her acting!
-
Another one of my favorite characters is Joe Aguirre. I do not like the character of Joe Aguirre but I LOVE Randy Quaid's portrayal of him (cold, blunt, tactful as a trainwreck).
Aguirre's line "unless you can cure pneumonia" is one of my favorite lines in the movie.

Indeed, he portrayed Aguirre wonderfully. I regret his action against Focus Features, but he did do a splendid job.

Although I love Jack's mom, I think Alma is my favorite. When we first meet her, she's just a little girl getting married to a guy she obviouslyl, loves, or thinks she loves. She's an innocent and has the whole world ahead of her and Ennis. The two of them playing in the snow shows her girlishness and innocence, again. Then, we see her washing clothes on an old scrubboard -- damn hard work, but doing it and taking care of two squalling babies, just waiting for Ennis to come home. She takes care of the house with no help, no modern applicances, raises two children, provides home-cooked meals and clean clothes for Ennis, and is there for him intimately, even when she hates his preferred position. She does all this, and gets a job working at the store. That's love and dedication. What did it get her in the long run?
Will any of us ever forget the look on her face when she opens the door and sees Ennis and Jack kissing? This is something so foreign to her world, the shock is enough to keep her quiet about it. She never brought it up to Ennis through another eight years of marriage -- that's how foreign the idea of two men kissing was to her. She didn't know where to begin talking about what she had seen.
So, I think Alma is a sweet, innocent, hard-working, loving wife and mother who didn't deserve what she got.
(Don't get me wrwong. Ennis and Jack's love was all-powerful and all-consuming, but it did hurt Alma.)

I added a poll with 5 names
Alma

Jack's mom
Cassie
Alma Jr.
All women :s)
-
oh my. I have seen see a poll where one person got 100%
Are we all like minded here or what?!

Sorry I messed it up... I said Lureen :)
I love Jack s mum but Lureen got me good..I dunno why but I like her more than the other other women so to speak..And I am sad to say that Randall is kinda growing on me as well... But he wasn't in the poll so...
-
Jack's Mum :\'( :\'( :\'(

I say Jack's mum too. :\'(

I can't help loving a woman with her sarcasm and these spectacular hair

I love the way Lureen's emotional evolution is reflected in her physical appearance, specifically her hair, teeth, nails, clothing.
And the little smirk on her face after Jack layed into her father is priceless.
-
I added a poll with 5 names
Alma
Lureen
Jack's mom
Cassie
Alma Jr.
All women :s)
I can't vote, I like two!
-
What about Randall?
I like the idea of a poll, but like I just said, I like two characters, Lureen and Jack's mum.
-
I'll go out on a limb and vote Lureen. Difficult to chose one, to be sure. Jack's mom is a whole world of feeling...
Yes, perhaps Randall should be considered...
-
I think if there's a poll then it should really include all the "other" characters. Is it possible to have a ranking poll, where folk give their 1-2-3?
-
Gotta be Jack's mommy. She represents every good thing that might've been. But then where would our boys be without Aguirre? He put them on BBM together.Shit this is hard!
-
Dirtbiker, Who are these guys in your icon? I know I'm off topic......but curious.
-

Yeeeees...thats a VERY good point.....
-
no way!! Ennis horse!!
-
That might be luckiest character ;)
-
As much as I love the job Roberta Maxwell did, I'm going to go counter to the prevailing winds and vote Cassie.
Cassie comes on the scene as our story is well along and clearly headed down a dark road, and she represents the last best hope for Ennis and a conventional life. How could Ennis NOT adore Cassie? Simple. His heart belongs only to Jack. The Cassie storyline reveals to us the depth of Ennis feeling for Jack, and it shows us how anyone who gets in the way will eventually end up hurt on the side of the road.
Linda Cardellini plays Cassie with such sparkle and life that I can't help but smile every time I see her pursue Ennis, and again when she talks to Alma Jr in the bar. And more often then not I cry with her in the diner as well.
What's not to love about Cassie? She's not Jack.
-
Love your comment, dalemidex. I'd also like to see a ranking system since I like several of the minor characters. They ALl lend something great to the story -- even those who are hardly mentioned in the short story.
-
Yeah, I like Cassie too - Linda Cardellini did a great job there
(Totally OT but she has to be one of the luckiest actresses around - she got to snog Goran Visnjic regularly in ER and then she gets to do the same with Heath Ledger ::))
-
I do suspect it is not possible to have a wrong answer here. Everyone was superb.
-
i liked alma jr cause i think she was alot like ennis quiet and shy yet very strong
-
well, as you can see in my avatar, it's Alma Jr.
i guess i just love her so much, because i feel a connection to her. she's a "daddy's girl", just like i am and she shared this special bond to ennis... and kate's acting was so great when junior asked ennis if she could stay with him... ::)
-

Thanks! I could probably make a similar case (in different ways) for Mrs. Twist, Lureen, Alma and Alma Jr. And as much as I love the short story, the screenplay is simply incredible in my eyes. I'd be hard pressed to think of anything added in the movie (okay, maybe the 4th of July scene) that isn't a masterful addition or expansion of the original.
-
They're all good. But if I had to choose, it would be Lureen. She has the most complex personality after Ennis and Jack themselves, and Anne Hathaway brings the character to life in an authentic and convincing performance.
-

In the phone call scene in particular, when Lureen tries to hold back so much emotion but can't completely

Yes, that scene in particular had so many layers. I am sure a lot of moviegoers missed a lot of the nuances in that scene. It was her best scene, to be sure. IMO, it matches in underlying emotional power (less dramatic, but more subtle) the Thanksgiving scene between Ennis and Alma.

I agree with you TPE, that was an excellent performance by Anne Hathaway. I saw an interview with Anne Hathaway and she is a very bubbly person (like the earlier Lureen). She really had to stretch herself to play the older Lureen.
-
Lureen was definitely my favorite. She had me with that wink ;)
But I REALLY fell for her when she was on the phone with Ennis. I could just watch that scene over and over again. She obviously has such a combination of emotions here and you can almost read each one of them. Sadness, fear, relief, anger...
I'd always liked Anne Hathaway, my little niece was a fan of the Princess Diaries movies. But she really impressed me in Brokeback - she proved that she's a versatile actress, and I think she's great :)

You are right jesseanne21. Hathawy has mentioned that acting out the role of a very forward young lady (whne Lureen first met Jack) was very difficult for her. But I think she missed out on saying how the older Lureen is probably a greater stretch. There is a hardness in the older Lureen that is not normally seen in Hathaway's characters, no?

Yes, I do think that scene between her and Ennis is one of the finest and most difficult ones in the entire movie. It took me multiple viewings to realize everything that was happening there.
-
Probabaly *o) but it seems to me that all three, Anne Hathaway, Heath Ledger and Jake grew up almost in front of the camera in this movie.

Yes. The growth: it all seemed so real -- in spite of Jake's fake stash...

Maybe OT. I like in particular this exchange:
Lureen: He used to say he wanted his ashes to be scattered on Brokeback Mountain, but I wasn’t sure where that was ……
Ennis: No, ma’am, we herded sheep up on Brokeback one summer … back in ‘63”
Lureen: Well, he said it was his favorite place. I thought he meant to get drunk ….
I love the way she pronounces that "he said it was is favourite place" . This is the moment she gets to know that Jack loved this man way before she met Jack and that his favorite place was really the place where he met this man.

Yes, the way she intoned it -- as if she was nonchalant about it. But it does indicate an older and stronger attachment between Ennis and Jack. Ennis was not the upstart. She was. Realizing this must have sucked the marrow from her bones...
-

Oh, I love that, too. You can just hear it in her voice.... like it's all coming together.
-
Alma jr is the queen of my heart, a little angel with her softly wings how can i not love the Ennis little girl <^(
-

Oh, I love that, too. You can just hear it in her voice.... like it's all coming together.
Still, I believe she is behind the killing of Jack... She or her father...
I just don't like the way she talks on the phone about Jack.
-
Alma Jr.
I always had a feeling that 'she knew', and accepted it. At the end of the movie where she forgets her sweater and Ennis folds it, I thought she left it there on perpose and postcards from Jack would fell out. Which teared me up...
Also she was the only one to come over now and then, non of the other kids did...
So they all knew Ennis was gay, but she was the only one that sort of accepted it.
Which is beautiful: Ennis did not accept it, but she did...
His own daughter...

It could not have been her father, as he was dead at that time. But I agree that the short story does leave open the possibility that Lureen had Jack murdered. See the old thread that asks if Lureen had Jack murdered...
-
I don't think Lureen to be a direct or an indirect homicidal of Jack.
I like very much Jack's mom character! 8)
-
Yes she is a sweet lady (Jack's mom) her eyes show a deep sad in her soul

Very austere. And yet, so warm.
-

Hmmm... sometimes I wonder about that, too. :-\\ But for some reason I can't see her stooping to that level of cruelty. To her son's father.... to the man she lived with for all those years....
-
Damn, i came in here thinking no one would say Jack's mom, but I was proven wrong ;D. She did so well, I can't stop thinking about her eyes, dangerous eyes she has.
-
the first person that came to mind after reading the title of this thread was CASSIE, so I voted for her ( one should act on one's instincts, ain't that right? ;) ), although I absolutelly ADORE both jack's mom and alma jr.- such superb, gentle and tender characters.
why cassie came to mind? I don't know- probably because she is a lot like me, in a way....searhing for love in all the wrong places and wanting it so bad.....and her line 'girls don't fall in love with fun' gets me everytime, that's just so true and I totally felt for her in that scene...in oder words: I understand her.

In a strong sense, she is a most tragic figure in the story. Unlike the wives, she never got it. "I don't get you Ennis del Mar" is a heartbreaking admission of her inadequacy to cope, even though she is armed with great love.
-
Character wise, I like Jack's mom. Besides Ennis, she's the only other person that loves Jack and she seems to understand their relationship well. When she puts her hand on Ennis' shoulder, that meant a lot of understanding and compassion. I also like Alma Jr. because she loves her dad and seems to care about him. You see her rubbing Ennis' shoulder after the Thanksgiving dinner. I think she's a good daughter.
For acting abilities, I think they all shine in the roles they played.
-
I voted for Jack's mum/Mrs Twist. She said it all with subtle glances. She used her eyes to full effect and the gentle push on Ennis' shoulder for him to go too Jack's room.Only on screen for a short time, but enough to make her my fave after the boys.Lovely actress, great perfromance.

I agree with you 1000% Jennis. She was marvelous! Like you said, she was on screen such a short time and had very few words and yet manages to convey to us all her love and understanding for her son AND Ennis, and to get Ennis to go up to Jack's room where she knew what was waiting for him there.
Brilliant actress!!!!!!
I wish I knew if she ever got my letter.

Yeah, I like Cassie too - Linda Cardellini did a great job there
(Totally OT but she has to be one of the luckiest actresses around - she got to snog Goran Visnjic regularly in ER and then she gets to do the same with Heath Ledger ::))
oh, I just saw this post and I feel the urge to brag a bit- Goran is a croatian actor ;D ;D ;D ( finally someone from my country who actually made it ;) ).
and I totally agree- Linda is one lucky woman ;)

Good to brag about it koka. :)
I do think she is a lucky woman in many ways. And she played the role of Cassie wonderfully. The final meeting with Ennis is quite powerful. It was so full of tension. Not as dramatic as the one between Ennis and Alma. But, in some ways, equally powerful.

I totally agree with you on this one my dear Thomas.
the 'girls don't fall in love with fun' scene is just so utterly powerful....I mean, you can totally see it in her eyes, you can SEE that she wants to 'get him' but instead realises she never will.....

I don't know, but I think she genuinly didn't get it. she loved the guy, yeah...but I think the fact that he may be in love with another man never came to mind- or at least she would have never allowed herself to even consider the possibility, even for a moment.

How many hearts were broken in this movie? Seeing Cassie's agony set against the backdrop of everyone else's, I can begin to entertain the idea of a cruel and mischievous God in BBM.
Yes, she connects because we are her.
-
The interesting thing about Cassie is that Alma Jr. warned her and she chose not to listen.
-
Maybe she dismissed Alma Jr - what would a teenager know? And women are eternal optimists - she's evidently very attracted and to quite a considerable degree committed to Ennis and doesn't want to give him up.
-
She did sincerely care for Ennis, no? I guess that's why it hurty her so much. She must have been aching for her love to be reciprocated in a more definitive fashion.

I think that you're both right, she's so wonderful, and after all the anguish, distress and grief that Ennis experienced, it was such a relieve to see Jack's mom, being ,what a real mother should really be... <^(
-
I'm absolutely for Lureen :)
-
I do find the later Lureen quite enigmatic. Her face in her last scene with Ennis hid more than it revealed.
-
I just get Lureen; her actions and reactions. In the beginning the outgoing young woman and later, after all these years of disappointments, this lukewarm and but yet hardworking lady. I think she actually never gave up hoping for a recovered relationship with Jack :)
-

She was so cold and changed in the last scenes. She also seemed very remote. It is amazing when we compare and contrast her earlier and later life.
-

I like Lureen too. I think there's a lot of similarities between her and Jack, and Jack and Ennis, in the way that she's so in love at the beginning, but eventually becomes worn down and bitter when she realises the "happy ever after" she'd hoped for with Jack was never going to happen. She wanted more from Jack than he was able to give, just like Jack did with Ennis. And I also feel that Lureen hoped until the end that she and Jack could make it work, like Jack always hoped for the same with him and Ennis :(
-
The tragedy of Lureen was that she never really knew Jack. This is what makes her such a tragic figure: she seemingly had everything and lost a great deal in the end. She draws forth very complex emotions from each of us. She is to be pitied as much as deserving of our scorn.

What about Monroe? He seems a bit shadowy in the movie, but we seem to get the feeling that he was a patient and quiet man. He is likeable enough, although I don't know if he is a favorite.
A character that has always intrigued me is Lureen's mother. She is totally in the shadows, and we remember her for her hair. And yet, we can think of the life she must have led and would assume that she had always deferred to her husband. But there is so little known about her.
