I read somewhere on this site that Brokeback Mountain has similarities with 'The Bridges of Madison County' and as I had never read that book or seen the movie, I thought I would read it and decide for myself. I personally didn't find it a patch on Brokeback Mountain or as believable. But there was one thing about it that got me thinking. :s)
When Ennis finally does die, I wonder what arrangements he will make as regards his body? Does anyone think that he might be cremated and finally join Jack? If he did would it be in one place, like the family plot at the Twist ranch or in both places, the Twist ranch and up in Texas? Would he not join Jack at all? Would he have his ashes scattered on Brokeback Mountain?
For me, after thinking about it I think that he would join Jack, and have the shirts cremated with him, (God, I could almost cry thinking about it). :\'(
:\'( I know that he would know that people, his daughters, and others would want to know why, but I think that by then he would do it anyway, whether it meant that people would guess or not. Then the grieving plain wouldn't be so grieving with the two of them together on it. Brokeback wouldn't be the same without Jack on it. Although if he couldn't face people asking why maybe that's where he would go. But then Alma would know why anyway and MIGHT tell the girls. I don't know whether she would or not. (That's a whole different question!)

Rosie, this is a really fascinating (and sad) thread you have started! I would love to think Ennis would make arrangements to be buried or cremated with the two shirts - can't see a way in which he could be interred with Jack's remains unfortunately :\'(, not the way things stood with old Twist. That for me would be next best thing. :)

I meant to say sprinkled! Sorry I didn't make that plain and :t) for pointing it out! Maybe old Mr. Twist might be dead himself, or maybe if Mrs Twist was alive she might agree to it. I suspose it depends on how far from the house the family plot was. I like the thought that that is what he would do, sort of makes me feel better. (Only a VERY LITTLE bit though!).

Me too Rosie. In my heart of hearts i'd love to think of Jack's dad out of the picture and there being a chance for Ennis to be with Jack in the plot or up on Brokeback. Mrs Twist was far more understanding about the whole situation between them both. I guess i can dream ;).
Will say Rosie, this is one subject that had never crossed my mind and i'm so pleased you brought it up, can't wait to read what you and everyone else thinks!

Hey, you know what? I just had another thought. I automatically thought that Jacks' ashes were sprinkled. But what if they weren't. What if the Twists had kept them in the urn, not knowing what to do with them afterall? Ennis could be mingled with Jack and sprinkeld on the mountain together! VERY far fetched I know, I think that I'm getting a bit carried away now !^*()

Get carried away all you want, i think it's a gorgeous thought! I know it means both our boys would be dead :\'(, but at least they would be together, in the place where they fell in love...

Old Twist is just the spiteful sort to wait till Ennis is out of the house and put Jack's ashes in the family plot to make sure he can't get them. Probably ennis would outlive both Twsits - in that case it shouldn;t be impossible for his ashes to be put with Jack's even if that means going to Lightning Flat with them at night when no-one could see. It would all depend on Alma Jr, I should think.
I have a private fantasy of Jack's ashes remianing in the family home till old Twist kicks the bucket then Mrs. Twist giving them to Ennis for him to scatter on the mountain, his own to join them when he dies.

We are. I guess it's the beauty of the film, leaving things so open at the end - we can fantasise all we like, we've not been spoonfed all the answers.

I think any chance of them being joined at the end hinges on Alma Jr. Maybe Ennis could tallkto her about his last wishes or leave her a sealed note or something. I feel she'd honor his wishes. Too sad.

Hey, there are several stories in the fan fiction section that deal with this topic (sorry, I can't remember which ones). The stories were lovely and heartbreaking..

My imagination states that what Mrs. Twist meant when she told Ennis to come back is...Come back for my baby's ashes and I will make sure you (the one he loves and the one who loves him) carry out his wishes. Ennis then has something written up (similiar to Bridges of Madison County) or maybe even confides in Alma Jr, letting her know that his one wish is to give what's left of him to Jack on Brokeback where they shall live in eternity together...
That's my story and i'm stickin to it!!!

This is not unthinkable... I would love for this to be true, and Ennis beeing able to get Jacks ashes, scatter them on Brokeback, then telling his daugter to do the same to his when he dies :)
