Title: Okay, i just noticed something...
Post by: FulOfSadness on Aug 15, 2006, 01:15 PM
I was just watching the "All rodeo cowboys are all f*** ups" scene, and right after Ennis says "Hell, thats most i've spoken in a year," did anyone noticed that he half-smiles, but then looks away shyly??? Jack does the same thing, and it hit me, that they shared something like that, it was amazing. I'm alittle slow, and i just noticed this, but wow, it made me feel all weird ::)  i didn't notice how sensitive that part of the movie is, so everyone go watch that part, and notice how SHY Ennis gets after sharing a smile, and a look with Jack, its priceless!!!!

Yeah, I'd noticed Ennis's little shy smile before. I notice most all of Ennis's smiles, if I'm being completely honest ::)

I do love the way that Jack's smile develops slowly as Ennis speaks though....like he's just basking in the unexpected gift of Ennis opening up to him.

I've always thought of that scene as the very first sign that Ennis is opening up to Jack; he has just spoken to him about his family -- something you don't do too readily unless you are willing to take a chance on a friendship with the new person.

There is a very old thread here that asks the forum members to identify at what scene they think they detect the first appearance of love.

I should look for it.  It would be an interesting read for those not acquainted with it.

This has always been one of my favorite scenes in the movie. It's the first time the movie shows something more than friendship is developing between the two boys. Ennis really opens up and then they are both a little embarrased about it. I think they are realizing this could be more than a friendship at this point too. It's a beautiful scene! <^(

It is an interesting subject you touch here, FulOfSadness.  The one you pointed out is, of course, a favorite of many.  Just because it was so beautiful...

Along with the fact that you can sense his breathing more ;)

jack is definitely looking at ennis' junk and giving him the 'how you doin'?' look.

it's so weird to see nice little innocent jack being all sexual and fiesty. in that moment, you can tell he really wants to put it on a brother like a pop tart. haha.

go jack go!!

OMG! It is true! I AM too old. I don't even understand English any more!

What is "junk" and what on earth does it mean to "put it on a brother like a pop tart" ??????

I feel like an Egyptologist trying to figure out an ancient language.  :8

Or maybe your English is just too good for modern usages?

:8  I don't know Welshwitch. All I know is I read words that looked like English words but they were put together in a way that left me totally in the dark as far as the meaning of the sentence.

By the way, if you or anyone else can interpret what was said, I will be grateful.

If it makes you feel any better, Patriot, I don't understand it either... of course, I can always pull out the "English is not my mother language" card - I doubt I'll find it in the dictionary, too! but, given the context, I can guess what that means...  ;)

Anyway, back on topic - as much as we like to joke about it, I don't think this moment was about sex. at least I prefer to think it wasn't. Rather, I'd prefer to think about it as a moment when they realize the depth of their friendship, even the depth of their feelings for each other. I'd like to think that Ennis was thinking how comfortable he feels with Jack, how great it is to be able to tell him all these things, and Jack thinking how he enjoys listening to Ennis talking, how much he loves hearing his voice, how wonderful it is to finally have him open up. This scene brings to my mind the part in the ss about both of them being happy to find a companion where none had been expected, and Ennis feeling like he could paw the white out of the moon. it's like a moment of realization - I feel something for this guy, and not necessarily sexual feelings, more like emotions. At least, that's my take on it.

"Ennis's Junk" refers to the lump in his pants if you get what i'm saying ;D Hes checking how 'big' he is down there.  LOL.

I'm, guessing "put it on a brother like a pop tart" Jack wanted to have sex with Ennis badly. ;)

I agree, the scene wasn't about sex, but had that edge to it, that is innuendous (most the kids my age don't know what that means :P ) Its still a great part. Ennis and Jack are basically best freinds that have mad animal sex. :8

That is exactly the feeling I came away with keren_b. I saw nothing sexual in this either. I also saw a friendship growing.

Oh my goodness. The meaning of words are being changed?  I grew up thinking "junk" was old or discarded material or objects or anything regarded as worthless. If you are correct, I would think Ennis' privates were anything but worthless to Jack.   ;D

I still don't get that one. Do kids today wear pop tarts?  They don't have sex with a pop tart I hope!!!!!!
So you are saying if I went to a bar today and said, 'I'd like to put you on like a pop tart' the other person would know I wanted to have sex?  OMG!  I would never have guessed a pop tart was the same as sex.

Pop tarts in the UK are rather repulsive biscuit/cake things filled with jam and junk is either rubbish or drugs ( nuch the same thing IMO).

It seems to me this scene is not about sex at all - it's about gradually coming to know and trust another hiuman being, which neither has much reason to do given the backgrounds they come from. It's that magical time when you're sicovering someone to whom you can talk completely openly, without being ridiculed, someone who will listen and understand, someone to whom you are important, someone you can trust.

And I don;t know about animal sex either - FNIT may be animalistic, but SNIT isn't nor the wrestling scene, the motel, the later shots of them asleep together in tent. In all those they're doing the very things that differentiate us from animals - caring, showing tenderness and gentleness, enjoying closeness, being sensual as well as sexual.

SNIT wasn't animalistic, as it is the most tender moment in movie history!

But, come one, the FNIT, the reunion kiss........The motel sex they must of had after 4 years. They are men with high sex drives, and i don't think that we can ignore that. The SNIT was a moment of certain desperation on Ennis's behalf. He was too lonely, and he wanted some love, rather it be physical or emotional (he got both) Even in the SS Proulx says their 'couplings' never got any less passionate, or 'good'. ;D Thay have animal sex, i know i would if i was either! but yes, there love is delicate, and they want to keep it that way. Also in the SS, Proulx explains that they never talked during sex, they just laughed and grunted (animal like?) there is nothing wrong with animal sex, and there is no reason to think that anyone meant wrong by saying they have 'mad animal sex' :X

The actual expression in the ss is "the brilliant charge" - suggests to me excitement, arousal, enthusiasm, intense pleasure. They are shpwn having sex only once in the movie - the rest is supposition. Kissing, and the passion it indicates in the reunion scene, may be a precursor to sex, but what sort the movie wisely leaves up to the imagination.

Its animalistic, lets just leave it at that ;) It can be passionate and animalistic at the same time. I almost prefer Animalistic, but that might change over time

I don't think there's anything wrong with it, I'm sure they had very passionate sex. I just don't feel comfortable sometimes when people start to find sexual hints in every look and every word they exchange, their relationship was based on so much more than sexual attraction - and I'm saying that without denying that there was sexual attraction, and a very powerful one. in the bottom line, different people can have different takes on the same scene, one can see something sexual in it and the other doesn't, and everybody's entitled to their own opinion. Our impression from one scene or the other is a very subjective thing, you can't say who is right and who is wrong, Even if we asked Heath and Jake and Ang, each one of them could have a different opinion.

YAY - Go Keren!

I totally agree, you said perfectly what I was thinking.  I've read everyone's opinions, and at the end of the day thats what they are - opinions on the same thing, and while it would be wonderful if we all agreed, that doesnt happen all the time.  But I do agree with Keren - there is so much to a lot of the scenes in this film that go beyond simply having a sexual element to them - I think that is one of the reasons I loved it so much, because the friendship built up so convincingly into a sexual relationship, with all the elements of romance and lust and longing tangled up in it.  I never once felt it was forced, or rushed, or used as an excuse to show two men having sex.  Some of the earlier scenes in particular as just so wonderful, because you see the friendship growing, but I certainly don't scrutinise it to see if there is something sexual hidden in it.

For what it's worth, my opinion is that there is a definite chemistry between them from early on, and a sexual attraction on Jack's part, but as for Ennis, I doubt he really knew what was going on, and I doubt he had words in his vocabularly for what he was feeling.  I certainly think that the "thats the most I've spoke in a year" scene was more about a growing chemistry between them, and Ennis recognising it properly for the first time.  He knew something was going on, but wouldnt have known how to articulate it, and probably felt happy and excited that he was able to feel comfortable enough to talk to Jack, but at the same time, didnt know why.  Which is probably why he did that little smile and then went all shy.  His head and heart were probably sending him conflicting messages.  I dont think Ennis was looking at Jack in a sexual way at that point.

Have you seen Closer? Everyone screws each other. Thats all we do :8 LMAO, jk. Yeah, i don't think every little thing is about sex (Thats a hell no!) but i do believe in the incredible innuendos in this movie. ;) There are quite a few IMO. I personally DO NOT think that Jack was 'checking Ennis's junk out'. I think he was just looking him down thinking (who do you think you are!?) remember, Ennis just said Jack was a f*** up, because he was a rodeoer ::) So i think that makes more sense
