I saw a posting on imdb that made me wonder.... What was Bobby eating for thanksgiving? Nobody else seem to be eating that. Looks like a bowl of clam chowder or potato soup, maybe even cereal! I found it somewhat odd, as these items are not usually part of a T-day meal.

Yeah, I thought that was strange too. Specially with Jack's stink with the old man about Bobby " ... eating the dinner that his mama spent three hours fixin'." BTW, I loved the look on Lureen's face when Jack let the old man have it! Priceless, I tell you , just priceless!

My gut reaction was that it was cereal with milk, but that makes no sense. It must have been a fish soup or something like that. Yes, it struck me as very odd too. Bobby is the illegitimate child of Lureen before she met Jack. That's why she was in such a hurry to get married to Jake to cover it up ;) Explains the blah looks of Bobby. Hee hee

cheeky, maybe she thought he was too dumb to notice. They both got what they wanted - she gota man to marry her in order to avoid a major problem with "daddy" , Jack go a cushy life.

There is no reason to think that Bobby isn't Jack's son. So, Lureen is the kind to kiss (and more) on the first date, doesn't mean she's a tramp. She turns many guys down at the bar when she's eying Jack. Bobby was a special needs child and maybe, sadly and unfortunately in the 1960's the kind of help he needed was not available. Maybe he just has ADD or DDS or PMS or whatever the latest thing is...

bobby had dyslexia, according to the short story. that could be why he was still not finished his dinner,
and his mom wanted the tv turned off so as not to distract him.

Whatever it is... The poor kid is not right. Jack tells Ennis that he is fifteen and can't even read. Jack blames Lureen for Bobby's condition. It is more appearant in the story than the movie...

Yeah it's in the story more, I think Proulx did that to show Lureen was getting really cold.

From my viewing today, I tried to look what's inside Bobby's bowl -- by its yellowish content, I'm guessing it's macaroni and cheese....(what kids like! :p)

Just saw the movie again.,, kind looks like he is eating potato soup... when Lureen tells him to eat, Bobby says asomething like : 'why we will be eating this stuff for a week" usually that's turkey.... I think Bobby was distracted by the tv that he was eating the soup course of the meal still while the others were ready to get to the turkey.. could be wrong

I think Bobby is eating some kind of fruit salad that has kind of melted. Looks to me kinda like what we called "fruit fluff" or Ambrosia - Fruit with whipped cream or marshmallow fluff stuff. The stuff in Bobby's bowl looks like its mostly peaches. On the table there appears to be a big glass bowl of it near where Jack is sitting (to Bobby's left).

It kinda reminds me of Libby's Fruit Float -- anybody remember that? From the 70's? (that Thanksgiving scene was 1977) It came in a can and consisted of bits of fruit in a sweet creamy/milky sauce. Sounds awful but it wasn't too bad...

It didn't look much like fruit salad to me, but maybe they made it different than my family does. We also eat it after the turkey, though. I also haven't seen this part in over a month, and it was white and chunky. Friot salad is also white and chunky, and eaten at Thanksgiving...

I looked carefully at this scene, I see pineapple chunks and the sour cream 'soup' It's a fruit Ambrosia Some variations use yougert, sherbet, club soda or sour cream and marshallows.. it is really good and there many variations on the recipe. But it's the wooden bowls that tip this off. These are salad bowls that one uses to eat Fruit Ambrosia from. But why he is eating it before the turkey I don't get. It usually is a dessert. Perhaps at the Twist household it is the salad course.
Here's a recipe if you haven't tried it:
Fresh Fruit Ambrosia
1 cn (14-oz) Eagle Brand sweetened condensed milk (not evaporated milk)
1 ct (8-oz) Borden Lite-Line orange yogurt
1/2 c ReaLime lime juice from concentrate
3 Oranges; peeled and sectioned
2 c Fresh pineapple chunks
1 1/2 c Grape halves
1 cn (3. 5-oz) flaked coconut
1 c Campfire miniature marshmallows
1 c Chopped pecans
In bowl, combine all ingredients; mix well. Chill at least 3 hours. Refrigerate leftovers.

Well, when you consider they are about to eat the main course (turkey) you could safely say what is in front of him is the soup course. When you consider that his mother has just brought the soup tureen into the kitchen this makes even more sence.
What kind of soup is it? Sorry, will have to ask the props manager.

That's what I thought at first, but it looks so much more watery than fruit salad. Maybe my family puts less whipped cream in it?

I believe it WAS some type of cream soup or chowder. The reason I say this is because when you see Jack in the kitchen putting gravy around the turkey...Lureen comes into the kitchen from the dining room carrying a soup tureen (spelling?). At first I thought it was a gravy boat, but its too big and has a top...I'm pretty sure its a soup tureen. Donna :)

As others have pointed out, it looks like the fruit salad to me. One thing is for sure that Bobby didn't like it very much. :D

Bobby made a comment that he would be eating that for the next two weeks... I don't think a fruit salad can last that long, unless he likes his food with peach fuzz on it... hee hee

I'm not American... is there any meal which normally is used before turkey in thanks giving day? Or something special for child especially in Texas?
I've also the impression that Bobby eats something of different to his parents as he had some specific food habit or some disease, intolerance? that's pure speculation!!

It must be some kind of soup. I mean, kids like fruit salad. It's just fruit, marshmallows, and whipped cream. I mean what is that, but sugar with nutrients, sugar, and more sugar? I loved fruit salad when I was a kid.

See this big bowl in front of the turkey? That is what Bobby is eating. it is not soup. It is a fruit, whipped cream, maybe marshmallows. There are different ways to make this. It is considered a salad, but yes, it can have a watery consistancy, especially if you let it sit in front of you while distracted by the t.v. Also, the wooden bowl in front of Bobby is exactly what you would eat this from.

The stuff in the bowl in front of the turkey is fruit salad, but it doesn't look like what's in Bobby's bowl. The lumps look much bigger in his bowl. It doesn't look like the same food to me. Besides, the bowl in front of the turkey looks untouched. The little garnish on top hasn't been moved at all and the top is even.

You are right, Cherrycake. As a caterer/chef and lover of that Ambrosia fruit salad, that is what is in Bobbys bowl. Those are definitely pineapple chunks in the liquid. I would expect it to be a soupy consistency in Bobby's bowl if he is taking his time to eat it. It kind of melts into goo. (I love the stuff!)
The bowl is front of the turkey looks untouched because the it hasn't completely melted (also notice the serving spoon on the left as if some already has been dished out. The garnish of berries don't always come out) Maybe Bobby whined to have some of that first! Sounds like something a kid would do, haha.

If he whined to have some first, why isn't he wanting to eat it? Then again, kids can be like that. They are easily distracted.

1 large onion
1 cup powdered milk
Water gathered from a rushing stream (it's okay if clothes have been washed in it recently)
salt, pepper to taste
Boil over fire while drinking whiskey. The soup will taste better the more whiskey you drink.
Serves 2.

I was given a link to this subject thread of discussion in another thread about what Bobby Twist was eating or not eating at thanksgiving.
From how I see that bowl in from of "Bobby," I see a red glass bowl which is the type in which one serves a dessert type food.
All of the lumps in that bowl are the same color, not exactly white but more of an off-white and seem to be the same size, too.
When I saw him using the spoon to stir it around, it was not as thick as the white part fruit salad in the big bowl. It was somewhat soupy.

That looks like an entry from a book I saw several years ago called The Cookbook of Unfortunate Food or something like that, I can't remember the exact title. We gave a copy to one of our friends as a gag gift. Apropos, non? He is still speaking to us, surprisingly enough.
PS. I'm with Patriot, that is a ceramic bowl in front of Bobby.

I thought it was a cermaic bowl, too. I just didn't argue, because everyone was agreeing that it was a wood bowl. I think it's potato soup, though I'm not sure about that recipe. ;D

While it is possible that the movie prop bowl is a ceramic one, I was just going by the way that the dark red (more like maroon in color) bowl looked. I have seen glass bowls with similar raised designs on the surfaces. [I was an art minor in college. Two ceramics classes were offered there. One was by the Industrial Arts Department and in that class, one poured clay slip into plaster molds made by someone else to make pottery/ceramics. The other was in the Art Department and every thing was made by hand with no molds. I did take the (Fine) Arts Department ceramics class.]

I just ran the DVD at 1/2 speed here in regard to what is in Bobby's bowl.
When the Texas Twist Thanksgiving scene opens, Jack is ladling turkey broth on the turkey in the kitchen. Lureen comes in carrying a soup tureen and sets it on the counter. That means the soup course has been served.
So, I say that in the bowl is some kind of creamy soup. So, it is either chunky potato soup/chowder or New England style clam chowder.

Some of us are so poor, disabled and retired that we don't have much of a life outside of the internet. Oh, we do various things without signing off and just get back to the computer during the day. One can do that when one does not have dial-up connections.

Oh, I understand about spending time on the internet, and especially hanging out here. It's the clam chowder part that has me baffled. With the multitude of topics to discuss, I am surprised this one garners this much attention. Just an observation really, no offense intended.

This has become somewhat Off-Topic; but, I have been disabled since 1993 and I have had a computer and been on the internet since 1998. I have had lots of people to tell me that I needed to get a life. I have even had people who claimed that my government pensions came out of their pocket and I was living on the dole. Some even went so far as to claim (when I was on America Online) that since I had posted so many messages on a particular day, I could get a job doing computer work. But, most of those messages were usually only a couple of lines which had to have a lot of proof reading, by the computer and by me, before I hit the "send" button.
Oh, back on topic here, some people do put tiny bits of potato in their clam chowder.

I reckon Bobby ( who's dyslexic, and not much was known about the condition in the 60s) was eating clam chowder with those little round crackers Americans put in soup - I wish I had a packet to crunch right now! ( And the chowder to go with them. ) I assumed the others had had their soup and were on to the main course while Bobby ( whom I always type as Booby - hate him for being the one held close to Jake in that shot of him driving the combine) had been watching TV and not getting on with his meal. Even Lureen couldn't take three hours preparing a turkey ( though I did once meet someone in a Winn Dixie on Christmas Eve who was buying a twenty-pound frozen turkey to eat next day!!! - sorry, writing about American food always statrts me off - don't ever get me on to Red Lobster) I kinda wished they'd finished off with pecan pie so that Jack could chuck it at LD...

and I thought it was an amusing observation - no offence to anyone!! I'm an addict when it comes to this site, and to one or two others as well! It just makes me smile that we are having an in-depth discussion about what a minor character (who only appears on screen for a matter of seconds) has in his bowl, and what material that bowl is made of!
It just shows how far this wonderful film in its entirety has grabbed and held on to our attention!
I did wonder what Bobby was eating but assumed it was soup - of what type I have no idea!!

Hey, danac! This is my first post here, but I'm a rabid BBM fan. I am so glad others wondered what was in that bowl. I thought he was eating Sugar Smacks or some cereal with marshmellows! That kid did seem to have an attitude. I expect he's heard dear sweet grandad (L.D. who I like to call Old Bastard) demean and patronize his dad since he was in the womb. Kid didn't look like he had much respect for either of his parents. I thought he was going to bust out with a string of curse words when Jack turned off the tv. Good for Jack for standing up. I know Jack was growing impatient with everything in his life, Ennis especially, and this was reflected in this scene.

I agree that Jack seemed to be at a boiling point in the scene...it breaks my heart when he puts his hand over his eyes at the table. He seems so unhappy and you know he's thinking of Ennis in that moment.
