Post by: BayCityJohn on Nov 01, 2006, 01:14 PM
You'll Freeze Your Ass Off!
on Sunday,February 25, 2007 in Bay City, Michigan

I'm having a little forum get-together up here
on Oscar Night and everyone is invited.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ta5xJ3RT7jE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ta5xJ3RT7jE)

There will be planned meals and activities starting
on friday and ending with a screening of last years
most honored film, Brokeback Mountain on Sunday.

The movie will be open to the public, but free for
forum members from the ennisjack, bettermost, and davecullen forums.. I'm sponsoring the film at The State
Theatre in Bay City.

The screening will be a 'protest' over last year's Oscar snub, but it's also a celebration.

“Is there anything interesting up there in Heaven”? – Jack Twist

I have a special show planned during the weekend.

On Saturday, February 24, at 5 pm, you are all invited to attend

“The Cowboy Astronomer” at the Delta College Planetarium.
 http://www.delta.edu/planet/

The basic premise of The Cowboy Astronomer is simple: we're in the Western outdoors, listening to star legends and cowboy tales around the campfire. Our cowboy astronomer gives us his perspective of the night sky, and the things he's found out over a lifetime of stargazing. He talks about star colors and temperatures — and we see how blue stars are hotter than red stars by the chili pepper ratings beneath them! We find the Andromeda Galaxy by hitting a first-base foul out of the park of the Great Baseball Diamond In The Sky. Along the way, we learn about young stars and supernovae, and what various cultures called the Pleiades.

We hear two Native American star tales: the Fisher story of the cruel chieftain holding the birds of summer captive, and the Devil's Tower tale of the Seven Indian Maidens and the Bear. We see the Anasazi pictographs of the 1054 supernova, and Sirius rising over Wyoming's Medicine Wheel. The show ends on a thoughtful, philosophical manner, as our cowboy muses about the constellation where he wants to head when he departs this Earth. He decides on Cygnus, for the black hole it contains.

There's never been a program like The Cowboy Astronomer. It's a fresh new perspective in the planetarium medium; a unique, different, and thoroughly entertaining show unlike anything you've seen or heard before. It'll make your audiences laugh, it'll tug at their heart strings — all the while teaching about the universe and humanity's relationship with the stars.

It features the planetarium narrating debut* of nationally-renowned cowboy humorist and poet Baxter Black, known for his commentary on National Public Radio's "Morning Edition," or TV performances on NBC's "Tonight Show", he's a first-rate storyteller and just the sort of person to personify a credible cowboy astronomer.

BAXTER BLACK is America's best-selling cowboy poet, the Poet Laureate of the Lariat. In addition to his many books, including his hardback, Croutons On A Cow Pie, Volume II, Baxter has catalogued his off-center cowboy poetry on at least six different cassette tapes and an Emmy-award-winning home video. With titles such as "#2 Hairball", "Range Fire", "Cowboy Standard Time", "Rudolph's Night Off", and "Why Do The Trees All Lean In Wyoming", Baxter's poems and stories spring from the wonderful world of cowboys and people of the land.

Baxter's talents have been enjoyed by millions -- at banquet and concert appearances; as a commentator on National Public Radio; a nationally syndicated columnist; and on network television as a regular guest on The Tonight Show. People magazine called him "an American original"; the Denver Post referred to him as "Will Rogers' weird grandson".

Raised near Las Cruces, New Mexico, Baxter grew up in and around the livestock business. He became a large-animal veterinarian, dispensing his medicine and practicing his humorous songs and poems on countless cowboys who worked with him on ranches and feedlots around the mountain West. Before long, Baxter was spending as much time entertaining as he was doctoring livestock. Choosing the cleaner of the two options, Baxter hung up his plastic sleeve in 1982 after a 13-year practice, and jumped head-first into show business. He hasn't treated a case of foot rot since.

* Baxter Black is NOT going to be there in person, it is a pre-recorded show.

BayCityJohn, thank you for the invite.  I am not yet sure of my schedule, but things are still open to possibilities.  Perhaps our Michigan/Detroit friends would also consider.  ;)

Are you organizing this?  Are you affiliated with the Planetarium or the college?  I know these are personal questions, so don't answer them if you prefer not to.  I was just curious.  :)

No I'm not with the college or the planetarium but I am organizing and sponsoring this. A lot of people are coming up on friday and saturday and i just thought this would be a fun thing to do.

The planetarium show and the movie on sunday are free for forum members. I will have an official signup sheet soon because I do need to know how many will be attending, especially the planetarium because there is limited seating.

I don't think I'll be there, but just in case I change my mind and Eric twists my arm real hard, I may decide to go and freeze my ass off.  If I do, I may also go to Chicago and Detroit and if you don't mind company, I might like to get a ride to Bay City and back.

I should love to be there but I can't get there, obviously.

However, I love the comment about ensuring we have plenty of time to miss the Oscars ceremony - we should all put it in our diaries now so we know we have something important to ignore.

Come one!  Come all!    :cr)

Oscar Night Theatre Screening of Brokeback Mountain

On Sunday, February 25th, 2007:

Instead of watching the Oscar's this year, WE'VE GOT A BETTER IDEA!

View our trailer for the event here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ta5xJ3RT7jE

All the info you need to know is here:
http://baycityforums.com/BBM/index.html

We are expecting upwards of up to 100 fans or more from around the world attending.  Many folks are arriving Friday night and leaving Monday morning.  Several folks who have acquired some of the wardrobe items or props from the movie will be there in person to display or wear the items.  We will be Dressed Up and Cowboy'd Up.  If you haven't seen BBM on the big screen, then you won't want to miss this opportunity!  This will be one classy evening!

The host hotel is the Bay Valley Hotel, and we have special group rates for the weekend. Other activities are planned for Saturday as well, but mostly this will be a great time to meet your fellow Brokies and celebrate 2005's Best Movie of the Year.  Bring your stories, your personal experiences, and your movie memorabilia with you to share!  You can also just come to the screening on Sunday night too.  Participate as much or as little as you like.  You can find all of the information in the link above.

Here is the official Press Release:
------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- ------
Fans from all over the world will be attending a special screening of the movie "Brokeback Mountain" on Sunday, February 25, 2007 at the State Theatre in Bay City, Michigan. There will be autographed posters and original costumes from the movie on display at the theatre.
This special screening is being sponsored by John Trudell (BayCityJohn) , a member of the internet group "The Ultimate Brokeback Forum." This is a great opportunity to see the film on the big screen, and to meet other passionate fans of great filmmaking.

It has been suggested by a number of fellow fans of the film that the 2007 Oscar telecast not be viewed in favor of watching the film that should have won the Best Picture Oscar, "Brokeback Mountain."   This has already been publicized on "The Ultimate Brokeback Forum," a website established by journalist Dave Cullen, and it boasts over 5,000 subscribers worldwide and contains over a half million individually posted items.  Its address is http://www.davecullen.com/forum/ if you care to check out the size and scope of the site.

You may not know that members of the Forum raised over $25,000 in a matter of a few days in order to place a full-page ad in Daily Variety, March 10, 2006, five days after the Oscar debacle, thanking the creators, cast and crew of "Brokeback Mountain" for transforming the lives of countless people around the world through the magic and power of the best film of 2005 and proceeded to enumerate the many organizations that awarded its top honor to the film.  You may view the ad at this address:  http://davecullen.com/brokebackmountain/img/ad-final.jpg

The placement of this ad received national media attention and is completely unprecedented in the annals of motion picture history that any kind of full-page ad had been placed in Daily Variety after the Oscars for a film that did not win Best Picture.  The ad was placed as a positive expression of support for the film rather than expressing anger at the Academy's surprising decision.

Information on the screening can also be found in the upcoming events section on the State Theatres Official Website:
http://www.statetheatrebaycity.com/

We've also just got listed on the local Convention & Visitor's Bureau website:   &**)

That would be great!

Let me know what you decide. We don't have a train station in Bay City, but there is one in Flint about 45 minutes south of here. We could arrange to have someone meet you at the station.

There is also the possibility that you could meet up with another forum member closer to Cleveland and ride up with them. Personally I would rather see you do that than take a train into Flint.

Yet each man kills the things he loves
By each let this be heard
Some do it with a bitter look
Some with a flattering word
The coward does it with a kiss
The brave man with a sword

Some kill their love when they are young
And some when they are old
Some strangle with the hands of Lust
Some with the hands of Gold
The kindest use a knife, because
The dead so soon grow cold

When Oscar Wilde wrote ‘The Ballad of Reading Gaol’ while imprisoned in Reading Prison for gross indecency in 1897 he could easily have been describing the world of Ennis Del Mar in ‘Brokeback Mountain’. Who hasn’t found themselves looking back at a world that could have been, only to say those saddest of words ‘if only’?

Oscar himself would become the posthumous victim of Lord Alfred Douglas (affectionately known to Wilde as ‘Boise'). Douglas would call Wilde "the greatest force for evil that has appeared in Europe during the last three hundred and fifty years." Unlike Ennis Del Mar’s feelings toward Jack Twist, Douglas would later say that he intensely regretted having met Wilde.

Had Wilde been prescient he probably would have regretted ever having met Douglas. Wilde (with Douglas’ encouragement) brought suit for libel against Douglas’ father who had called him a sodomite. In court Wilde denied that there was any substance to the allegations - and found himself on trial when several young men were brought to the stand to testify otherwise.

Have we come very far from the world Oscar lived in? In 2006 we found the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences wanted to disassociate themselves from the powerful indictment of homophobia that existed in ‘Brokeback Mountain’ - choosing instead to celebrate ‘Crash’ as the best picture of the year - a film which posits that everyone is racist. So instead of celebrating a film which argues for compassion we found the Academy casting its vote with those who would say that bigotry is part of the human condition. This snub came after a season of vile commentary - from reviewers like Gene Shalit, who called the character of Jack Twist a rapist; from Jack Cafferty on CNN who said ‘there aren't too many closet doors that are left closed in this country’ and from Tony Curtis who told Fox News that he hadn’t see it and that John Wayne wouldn’t like it. Surely these views on homosexuality fit right in to the 19th century world of Oscar Wilde.

We find ourselves in 2007 living in a world where a film about homosexuality has never won a ‘best picture’ award. Of course this has been true for a while, ‘The Color Purple’ lost out to ‘Out of Africa’ in 1986 and ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ lost to ‘Forrest Gump’ in 1995. And yet a film about a transvestite serial killer has won (‘Silence of the Lambs’ in 1992) and a film about a schizophrenic man whose homosexual encounters have been conveniently excised from his story has won (‘A Beautiful Mind’ in 2002). Actors and actresses have won for gay roles, of course - Tom Hanks for ‘Philadelphia’ and Philip Seymour Hoffman for ‘Capote’. So to take a broad view the Academy appears to be telling us that if you want to be successful in a gay film you should be dead or obvious - but don’t scare the horses by appearing to be an everyday person, please. Clearly these are views that would make perfect sense to Oscar - thinking like this made him deny his own homosexuality in court.

Gay people and their friends have been fans of the Academy Awards for a long time. It just appears that the feeling isn’t reciprocated. So perhaps it is time for us to kill the thing we loved and move on. We don’t need their Oscar - we have our own. And in his ‘De Profundis’ he says:

“. . . Suffering is one very long moment. We cannot divide it by seasons. We can only record its moods, and chronicle their return. With us time itself does not progress. It revolves. It seems to circle round one centre of pain.”

Can there be any question that he would understand the world of Ennis Del Mar?

Thanks WW, Bay City John could certainly take this to Dave Cullen to notify the attendees from there.

Talking about attendees, it's only Flwrchild and I for now from ennisjack who will go to Bay City, anyone else plize?

Pierre, I am still checking this out with my supervisors.  One of them is a bit reluctant to give permission on that weekend.  I am trying out my charms with my direct supervisor.  ;)

Thanks Pierre.  Normally, this should not be a problem (it is not that far from me, after all).  I will try to talk with him after 5:00 pm today, if I can catch him...

Not good.  I just talked with my supervisor and he does not want to go against his supervisor's wishes.

We left it open-ended, but I think my chances of going are getting smaller... :(

Cr*p!  Don't you have vacation days or floaters?

Yes, I have lots.  But they are requesting that I either accompany them to NY or else deal with the stuff they will be needing from the Chicago end.

Technically, I could insist on a vacation, but it might not be wise.

As I said, it is open-ended.  But I really should be deciding right now...

They really are nice people.  I should not complain too much about them... Still...

Movie Tickets

Everyone at the hotel will receive a ticket when they arrive.

For those people not staying at the hotel, your ticket will be at the theatre under your
forum name.

Planetarium- no tickets needed, but please let me know if you're attending. I want to make sure everyone is there before the show starts. Check the attendee list, and PM me if the # of tickets is wrong.  The show runs about 40 minutes.

Directions to the State Theatre

Please DO NOT USE online map directions once you're in Bay City. One of the main bridges is closed and you may get lost.

From the hotel:

Turn right when leaving the parking lot
Turn right at the stop sign.
Turn left at the light by KFC/Taco Bell
At the second light, turn left on to Euclid Avenue

Continue to the 4th light. You will see the Texan Restaurant on the left.
Turn Right onto Midland St.

There is a curve to the left on Midland Street just before the business district. Stay to the left. Do not go into the business district.
You should be on Vermont St. now.
Follow Vermont St. across the river. Stay in the right lane.
As soon as you cross the bridge you need to turn right at the light on to Washington
The theatre will be 4 blocks down on your right.
It's best to park on Washington Avenue. There is no parking allowed directly in front of the theatre entrance.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From I-75:

Take the M-25 E exit- EXIT 162A- toward DOWNTOWN BAY CITY
At the second light, Euclid Avenue, take a left. (It might be the first light, I'm not sure. You should see a Remax real estate office on the corner)

Continue to the 2nd light, Midland St.
You will see the Texan Restaurant on the left.
Turn Right onto Midland St.

There is a curve to the left on Midland Street just before the business district. Stay to the left. Do not go into the business district.

The marquee is up at the theatre today!

BUT I'm pissed. it's not what I asked for. Someone at the theatre added the word 'nominated' before 'Best Picture'.

I sent this email to the Executive Director:

_________________________________________________________________________

Mike:

Thank you for getting the marquee up this weekend.

BUT it's not right.

The word 'nominated' shouldn't be there and I would like it removed.

When I asked for the marquee to read 'Best Picture', I was not referring in any way to an award given annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

In every piece of marketing I've done for the event, I have included this disclaimer:

This event is neither endorsed by nor affiliated with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

ACADEMY AWARDS®, OSCAR(S)®, OSCAR NIGHT®, and the OSCAR® design mark are the trademarks and service marks, and the OSCAR statuette the copyrighted property, of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The whole point of the event is that the members of the internet forums consider it to be the Best Picture, and that we agree with those who named
"Brokeback Mountain" the Best Picture of 2005:

British Academy of Film & Television Arts
Golden Globe Awards
Golden Satellite Awards
Independent Spirit Awards
Venice Film Festival
Boston Film Critics
Broadcast Film Critics Association
Cinephile Society
Dallas-Fort Worth Film Critics
Florida Film Critics
Internet Entertainment Writers Association
Iowa Film Critics
Las Vegas Film Critics
London Film Critics
Los Angeles Film Critics Association
New York Film Critics Circle
Online Film and Television Association
St. Louis Film Critics
San Francisco Film Critics
Southeastern Film Critics
Utah Film Critics
Vancouver Film Critics

Thank you.

Thanks.

The Academy was wrong, and we were right, and a year on here we are, brought together and kept together by BBM, Best Picture in the judgement of those who recognized its power and truth.

OK Brokies, don't hold your breath :P

Picture wise, I hope your expectations are not too high.  I'm currently uploading some pictures but we miss a lot.

1st.  We got some technical issues with the digital camera and the plan B, my picture phone, turned into a plan P if not even worse.  ::)

2nd.  Neither me or Flwrchild are ready yet to post something that would make sense about the Bay City experience, after two lines I can't make it but cry... and I'm not kiddin'.  Old Brokebak got us good  :-\\

Some personal notes on the fantastic Bay City screening.

As one of the fortunate few who were privileged to be able attend BBM at Bay City last Sunday I thought I would pass on some personal thoughts to those that are interested in the screening. Due to schedule I wasn’t able to participate in any of the weekend events except the movie screening and about 45 minutes of the live musical show prior to the screening.

Some background:
I’d only seen BBM in a theater once (gasp!!). In small town Ohio I “came to” BBM late, first seeing it at home after its release on DVD. Like you all I was swept away. I finally saw it on a big(ger) screen near the end of its US theatrical release in late April 2006 at a multiplex theater in San Francisco. Not a memorable experience as the screen was about the size of two-car garage door! So going to Bay City seemed a good way to finally really see it BIG.

The pre-game show:
The live musical show that I was able to attend was great and seeing so much of the set and costume memorabilia that I’d followed on eBay was fantastic too. Listening to a live performance of Santaolalla’s music was truly wonderful. Especially enchanting to me was the great solo performance of “Riding Horses” with its simple, slow, repeating two-note, Ennis/Jack theme. The feeling and artistry here was magnificent.

The screening:
Nothing can compare to sitting in a dark room with a hundred other devotees watching this film. Knowing that everyone else in the room knows this film by heart and that they are all intensely waiting for their own favorite line(s) was compelling. The silence was palpable, like a religious experience (except for the quiet sobbing). There were several spontaneous bursts of laughter from the audience, at times expected: Jack’s “The hell they are!” (f**k-ups) and Ennis’s “If I’d got lucky that harmonica woulda’ broke in two”, but also the unexpected (to me anyway), Ennis’s perfunctory “Hey” after coming home to Alma from the Siesta Motel got quite a laugh. These lightened the whole mood of the event to a celebratory level.

Technical:
For those expecting to see (or hear) something from the film that you don’t get viewing it on good audiovisual equipment at home I’d have to say don’t worry, you possibly get a better view of the artistry of the film at home. Theaters are by nature compromises in terms of lighting and audio presentation so we didn’t see anything you won’t see at home. (Still no answer to what is said FNIT!!) This film PRINT was interesting, having now watched both Full Frame and Widescreen print versions many times (I’m partial to the full frame mask at home, it makes the central characters bigger) this print seemed to be something of a hybrid. It definitely had mostly Full Frame masking, but it also seemed to have some framing elements of the Widescreen version too. I haven’t had time to explore this with BayCityJohn yet to find out which it was and why. Given the “classic” era of the theater it may be that the Full Frame proportions best matched the screen here.

So there’s my take on the Bay City screening, a fantastic event, kudos to Bay City John for putting such a great party together.
 (:)  (:)  (:)  (:)  (:)

Oh yeah, what happened at the Oscar’s anyway?

It was open to the public and there were at least a couple that wandered in, one of whom I spoke to at some length. I'd be interested to know how many there were as well. This was my 5th theatre experience and the first time seeing it with such a full house, much less all Brokies! An absolutely unique experience, to be sure. :)

We only sold 4 tickets to the public.

One of those was a member of a local gay social group 'Perceptions'. He didn't realize what we had planned. He thought it was just the movie. He's on the staff for that group, and I wish I would have given him more information ahead of time.

The price was a little high for a movie in this area, and the weather definitely kept everyone from coming out.

Part of the problem with selling tickets was my lack of an advertising budget. I was only able to get a few free calendar listings on websites.

I did send a press release to our local newspapers, but they chose to ignore it. They did print a simple listing for the movie, but nothing was said about the displays or the concert. So I really can't blame any of the locals for not wanting to spend ten dollars on just a movie.

We had good exposure in Detroit, but again, the weather ruined that.

This was my first attempt at event planning, and I learned a lot.

Wow!  BayCityJohn, I wasn't there...but I'm so glad you did this!  I didn't realize there would be a host of other activities before the screening Sunday afternoon.  I am very curious about the "live music."  Who played it, on what?

I love the pics, Cham!!  I about cried seeing the theater marquee.  I'm glad you and FlwrChild were able to go.  I love the groups shot.  What a fabulous group.  It must have been wonderful.

And Jackster, thanks for your report -- interesting stuff about the FS/WS thing.

Anyway, BCJ, you did good!  This is cool that it was your first "event planning" -- good experience...and with a most appreciative "public," us.

And Michael -- you introduced yourself on the other thread, but I'll say here, welcome from me, too.

I was on piano, and I also put together some of the MIDI sequences. The sequences were played on my computer through a software synth.

Glenn (brokenokie) from the DC forum was also on piano/synth.

Lenny (bass51) played bass guitar and sang.

Trish (jaysmommy) was the lead singer.

Lenny and Trish are professional musicians and we sounded great.

Set list:

'Opening' from Brokeback Mountain (solo by Lenny)

No One's Gonna Love You Like Me

Moondance

'Camp' from Brokeback Mountain (solo by Lenny)

Unchained Melody

King of the Road (Lenny and Trish, with audience participation)

Crazy

'Camp' from Brokeback Mountain (solo by Lenny)

A Love That Will Never Grow Old

Maker Makes (Glenn on keyboard, sung by Lenny)

and

Wings

Barb (Flwrchild) and I knew a concert was planned before the screening but we were not expecting that concert.  In itself it was worth the drive from Detroit.

When Lenny started to play the BBM opening, my jaw just dropped and my eyes filled with tears.   :-\\

Then Trish sung No One's Gonna Love You Like Me...   :-\\ :\'(

BTW Trish have a beautiful voice and some talent to say the least  ;)
(John, Lenny and Glenn are very talented too)

I held Barb's hand during King of the Road, this song is very meaningful for her and I know she has sometime a hard time to listen to it.  :^^)

Both Barb and I just lost it when Lenny sung the Maker makes   :\'( :\'( :\'( :\'(

We were already a mess and the movie didn't started yet.

And we had the Wings for dessert  :P

I was about to forget...

We watched the movie too.  I'm not about to repeat what I posted so many times about the movie experience.  I cried, she cried, we all cried.  There was some serious sobbing in that theater... not me, Barb told me I was quite discreet for once  ???

It was a blessing however to have my little wolvette sitting next to me, we held each other and cried together.  This is what friends are made for, huh?

Holding a friend and crying with her/him watching Brokeback Mountain is an overwhelming experience.

This is fabulous!!  Do you have a tape or DVD or whatever of this performance available?  It sounds great, also, that you played some other songs -- especially Crazy, Unchained Melody.  I so wish I could have been there...

Cham & Flwrchild!  (And another EJ guy who didn't tell me his screen name- sneaky devil!  ;) )  I am so honored to meet you and have you join us all at the Bay City screening.  I'm sorry we didn't get the chance to talk/chat/connect more.  Wish you guys could've been there for all the weekends activities.  A fun time was sure had, and we are all family, no matter which board you settled on.  Thank you so much for the gifts.  Hah, they lost my luggage on the flight home and all my BBM gifts from the weekend are in there.  :\'(  They *think* they've located it, and it's on it's way, but we'll see.

I hope more EJ'ers will see the pictures and read the stories and get motivated to come to Denver in May.  It's gonna be big!  The biggest one yet.  This will be the one not to miss!  Trust me.  ;)

Lots of pictures and stories from this weekend!

Eric, thank you so much for the links. It was wonderful to meet you. I wish we could've been there for all of the weekend's activities. I love connecting with other Brokies and everyone I met was so nice. I hope the three forums will do more events together. I don't think I can make Denver but I never say never! It sounds like a magical weekend in the making.

John, can't say it enough. Thank you for all the hard work and for including us.

Pierre, thank you for the beautiful post. I knew you'd do it better justice than I ever could.

It's been a good weekend for a very happy Brokie. ^f^

Glenn's friend Robert taped the entire concert on professional video equipment.

I don't know when it will be available. At least of couple of weeks.

I'll post more details later.

I did not expect to almost break even. People were very generous. I've found that to be the case at other events too.

I posted the amounts so anyone else who might want to host an event will have some idea of what's involved.

I appreciate it since we are presently working in organizing the Paris gathering. The theater rental in London was about 400 pounds (800$ US) and we brought our own DVD to be projected.

One last look at the old marquee

This is the last chance for residents of Bay City to get a look at the old marquee that adorns the historic State Theatre in downtown Bay City. It has a date with a wrecking ball later this week.

Once demolished, crews will begin installing a new digital marquee. They will work under cover with the unveiling scheduled for Sept. 11 during the annual Taste & Theatrics event.

''This has been something we needed for a long time,'' said Mike Bacigalupo, executive director of the theater,
