So far, our discussion has largely focused on Ennis and Jack. I would like to start a discussion on the female characters.
In addition to the tragic love between Ennis and Jack, I sympathize Lureen and Alma who appear to be faithful to their marriages and fell in love with their husbands.
What are your thoughts on these two characters?
-
I'm glad that you made this post cause I was thinking about them too.
Lots of people tend to sympathize with Alma, probably because we see her pain onscreen the most. She definitely had a hard time of it for a few years, knowing that Ennis was having an affair (and with a man no less!) and having to take care of her children while her husband was unattentive and a liar must of been terrible. Ultimately, she found her "happy ending" with Monrow, a guy who I think was perfect for her in the end- sensitive and caring, the perfect "dad" type. Although she felt the pain of Ennis' betrayal for years after their marriage was over, as evidenced in the Thanksgiving scene I'm pretty sure that her life became happy with her new husband.
I tend to think of Lureen as the real tragic figure. I mean, here she was a young spirited girl who had just met a lively guy and was falling in love. Over the years, we see her erosion (as we do with Jack. Those two were just two bright people eroding into bitterness). We can see it in the changes in her appearance and her transformation into this cold, hard woman even if they don't spend a lot of screentime with her. I think she got to a point where the damage was irreversible, she didn't meet another man (well, maybe she did after Jack) and lived with one who put absolutely no effort into the marriage. I wonder how she would have turned out if she hadn't met Jack. It just seems like they both eroded into nothing
-
Alma gets all our sympathy, she loved Ennis and was so young when she married him, I can only imagine what she went through. But yes in the end she got what she deserved and needed with Monroe. You wonder with her, if Jack hadn't shown up would her life have been ok with Ennis? Probably, maybe. Jack was Ennis's one shot deal I think with men.
Lureen gets sympathy too but since she is more preditory and the way she acted at the end was so cold. And maybe her initial attraction to Jack was also due to his being a little harder to get since he didn't chase her like I am sure she was used to being a gorgeous rich girl. But if all people who go after the harder to get got hurt most of the population would be. I don't know, I felt that last scene at the dance hall with the rancher and his wife also showed a marriage over, the dig about husbands not dancing with their wives....etc.
I mean do we ever know ourselves let alone those we live with?
-
I don't mean to stray somewhat from the subject. I've seen BBM 3x and recommended it to a colleague/friend "Heather" @ work. Well, she went to see it and came back livid after the weekend and I mean livid! It wasn't because of the homosexuality in the movie. "Heather" and her younger sister are the products of divorce. Her father cheated on her mother after her mother inadvertently caught him in the act. Granted, it was w. another woman. Anyway, "Heather" was devastated by the family breakdown.
When "Heather" saw the movie, she identified w. Alma Jr., her sister as Jenny and her mother as Alma. The movie brought back a lot of emotional pain. She was really mad @ me for some time. After she calmed down, she realized that I was not to blame. I was aware that her parents were divorced, but I was unaware that it was due to adultery. My parents have been married for a long time, so I wasn't sensitive to the pain of children and spouses of divorce.

You have to feel for Alma when she opens the door and sees Jack and Ennis deep into each other with a passion she knows doesn't exist with her and Ennis. Her portrayal of a women being left behind as she closes the door and walks back into the room is outstanding. At the very outset, I believed she loved Ennis, but it soon gave way to nagging (she tried ever ploy to get her way, the kids don't have anyone to play with, she was fearful of the daughters asthma attacks), in truth she just wanted to be in town, tired of the damn lonesome ranches. Funny thing, once she got to town she wasn't satisfied either. She had even staked out the apartment before hand. She forced Ennis into doing work he didn't want to do, wasn't meant to do. When she confronted Ennis later on at the Thanksgiving table, I wanted to smack her.
Lureen on the other hand became the business woman, because Jack wasn't the prototypical business man. Neither wanting to take care of family issues as evidenced by the lack of tackling the school issue for Bobby. I think Lureen loved Jack, but he grew apart from her, for a reason she couldn't perhaps know or understand. If you remember in the scene at the dinning room table, she was dressed more simply, smiled when Jack actually told her old man to sit down you S.O.B. before I knock your ignorant a$$ down. The next time we see her is with Randall and LaShawn, she fried out. Lots of makeup, lots of Jewelry, Lots of hair. It was the Big 80's I realize and Dallas was in full swing, but my gawd. Then at the end, we see glimpses that she still loved Jack, even though she was cold as ice to Ennis.
Frankly, Lureen just shoulda had an affair with LaShawn, she would have been better!
-
Lureen was married to her work more than she was ever married to Jack. You see her in the 'parka' scene, punching numbers and chain smoking, worried about sales and stock. Later on, Jack says to Ennis that he should see her with her eyes getting smaller and smaller as she works out figures on her calculator...She cared more for her business than her relationship with Jack. I think she was the one who caused the downfall of their relationship, not Jack. She seems a little highstrung for his casual ways.

Yes, but HOW did she get that way? This is something I've been wondering about, and one of the great mysteries of the movie to me. She was such a fun girl early on, what happened?
I think this is why Alma will always get more sympathy: we KNOW that Alma knows. So we can understand her heartbreak and bitterness towards Ennis. But we never know what is going on with Jack and Lureen. Does she suspect something? Or is there some other reason for her drastic personality change?
I wish I knew.
-
You wonder with her, if Jack hadn't shown up would her life have been ok with Ennis? Probably, maybe. Jack was Ennis's one shot deal I think with men.
That's a great question. I am not in the camp of Ennis being a run-of-the-mill straight man who just happened to fall in love with Jack Twist. But without Jack it seems pretty unlikely that Ennis would have ever approached understanding what was inside of him. But even without the affair with Jack, would Ennis and Alma have been happy?
We don't ever really get to see Ennis and Alma without the influence of Jack, so it's hard to say what they themselves had. Lots of marriages are unhappy or end in divorce even without infidelity. Ennis wasn't exactly the type to communicate, either. But did Alma want or need that? We see their marriage skid as Ennis is slowly ground down. But how much of that was Jack? How much was poverty and general lack of hope? Would they have been any better of financially were there no Jack Twist? Money problems rank near the top of reasons couples divorce.
Thoughts, anyone?

I could survive being poor, but the nagging would drive me right over the precipice.

From the story:
"A slow corrosion worked between Ennis and Alma, no real trouble, just widening water."
Alma was dissatisfied with the marriage. She wanted the degree of comfort and security that she eventually found with Monroe. Ennis lacked occupational ambition and the ability to satisfy her emotionally. These things just eroded the marriage for her. I think they would have divorced even if there was no Jack.
It's interesting, too, that of the 4, Alma emerges the most intact. She doesn't turn into an iceberg like Lureen, and she is generous enough with Ennis to have him over for Thanksgiving.
At the end of the movie, you find yourself heartbroken for Jack and Ennis. Lureen is to be pitied. Alma, though, is going to be just fine.
Off topic, I think Michelle Williams is absolutely brilliant in the "Jack Nasty" scene at the kitchen sink. She deserves the Oscar just for those few minutes.

Wow...I never thought of that, but you're right. Alma is going to be just fine. In some sort of strange way that almost makes me feel a tiny bit better about the ending. Dont' get me wrong, I love this movie and the ending is exceptionally effective, but it's so very sad. To realize one person (Alma) is going to be okay helps a little bit.

Yeah good point, I mean she has a lovely home, Monroe seems to genuinely care for her.
-
Monroe took care of Alma they way she wanted, but she basically abandoned the girls in the process. Why else would Alma jr. practically beg her father to stay with him, because they were rough on Jr. and Sis.
Anyone think Monroe was a wimp?

I think it's important to remember that Alma Jr and Jenny were both teens by that point with all the angst and parental challenges that go along with that. Also, their original home had been broken up. ALSO, Alma Jr was really more ENNIS Jr by nature. Junior would have preferred to be with the parent that was more like her, and why not? Alma was stuck with the job of being the "bad guy" as the live-in parent. I'd take Junior's declaration that she and Jenny had it rough with a grain of salt.
As for Monroe, he was a milder kinda man than Ennis, certainly less intense and exciting, but he did tend to the responsibility of providing for his family in a more effective way than Ennis did. So no, I didn't think he was a wimp, just a bland and therefore less attractive figure to the audience, because he's a less wild and romantic figure than Ennis. For Alma, though, this was a good thing - she wanted stability and convention more than excitement and stimulation.
In the merger of these 2 families, Ennis was the only one who really lost out, but even he could depend on Junior pretty much forever.
-
Yeah I agree, just cause Jr was complaining doesn't mean home was horrible, just strict like she said (this was early 70's too) Monroe looked boring but decent.
-

Yeah, and I think Alma wanted just exactly what she got. Personally, I'd take an Ennis-type any day as long as he left the business of making a living to ME! Intensity, for me, is the "whole enchilada", and I've given up a lot to have that in partners. But I am not Alma - a young woman with kids. As a mother, she had an obligation to be practical.
-
Maybe I just need to give him another chance.
P.S. I hope Ennis doesn't think he lost anything by passing that marriage up.

No way! Ennis and Alma were totally wrong for one another in so many ways. But you know that poor Ennis will always be alone with his memories, and, at 40, that's just too awful for words....
-
As everyone does, I have much sympathy for Alma. I don't believe she loved Monroe up to the point where we last see her, because if she did I think her feelings toward Ennis would not have been so strong, even if they were negative. I don't think she left him, because of money. I think she left, because he couldn't love her very much if he wouldn't even touch her anymore. That is when she knew Jack won. She married Monroe, so he could provide for her kids. I give her much credit, because despite her contemot for Ennis and what he did to her, she apparently never bad mouthed him as evidence by his kid's love. I"m sure Alma, Jr. just wanted to live with him, because she was the apple of his eye. Alma's attentions had to be divided so many ways and with a new baby in the house, I"m sure Jr. felt short changed. I don't blame Alma for that.
I don't have a lot of sympathy for Lureen. As per the story, she took little interest in her son and his learning disabilities. Anyone, who is more concerned with money and numbers than their own flesh and blood, deserves nothing in my book. She also did not offer her ashes for Ennis to spread, which I think would have been the right thing to do. And if she loved Jack, despite the fact he cheated on her, I think she would have made some effort to get together with someone else who loved him.

Naw, didn't look like a wimp but not a fighting Ennis for sure. I just got the impression he didn't have a clue.
If I would have heard my mate screaming in the kitchen I would have been out of that chair pronto.

No, it certainly isn't with me. I was raised for a good many years by a fine French lady and an English gentleman (grandparents).
I make women today so angry when I hold the door open, open their car door, hold their chair when they sit. But, if they don't like respect, they will just have to learn to live with it.
-
That is wonderful! I try to teach my son those manners. I think there are plenty of women out there, who still LOVE that!!!!!!
By the way I think Monroe stayed where he was, because he knew he was no match to Ennis. I don't really think Ennis would have hurt Alma (physically, I mean), although he threatened her. Do you?

No, I don't think he would have hurt her...except for the bad acting. ::)
"I am going to call for Monroe!" What a laugh!
What was Monroe going to do other than pee his pants?

..OR it might have deteriorated into an electric knife fight ala Star Wars if there was an extra in the kitchen! Engarde!

You really think so? I thought Williams' acting was absolutely shimmering in that scene - thought it was her best!

I thought it was very good also. I forgot to comment on that.

My favourite "Lureen" scene..and one of the most heart breaking one too!

I like very much Lureen.
Of course seing Alma crying, her pain and anger touches me, but when I think of the gap between the young Lureen (passionate, full of life, full of hopes) and Lureen in her last scene (bitter, cold, looking like the shade of herself), I feel that her life was really unfulfilled too. She spend 20 years typing on her calculator... and probably spend all her free-time at the hair dresser. :'(

One thing I noticed -- maybe it will seem petty -- but, for all her glamour and glitz, fancy clothes, jewelry, Daddy with the $$$$... see the picture just above... her nail polish is chipped! To my mind, like I say maybe I'm being petty but, it just demonstrates that Lureen is all show, she forgets the small, fine details. Maybe she just ignores them... As long as she looks rich and pretty at a quick glance, that's enough. Look any further and you find a woman who is unhappy, depressed, lonely. I've always thought that, all the years she and Jack were married, on one level she thought she was In Charge, if you know what I mean... she pursued him, she had the rich daddy who got him a job and all, she probably thought he needed her... and on another level maybe she wasn't so sure, she didn't know his friends and didn't understand his 'fishing trips' and so forth. And then Jack gets killed, maybe she knows why, maybe not. And the phone call from Ennis confirmed her worst fears... that Jack HAD had a life apart from her... in truth, he had never been hers, really, not at all. You see the realization hitting her, the tears welling in her eyes. Her entire marriage had been a facade.

It makes me realize that in a way she's like Ennis : for both of them the most important is the way the society see them. They have to be as they're expected to. In the case of Lureen, to be a good sophisticated and working wife, showing off her whealth. And both Ennis and Lureen aren't happy in their lives, and both become totally involved in their jobs to forget their lack of happiness, puting their family life aside.
To me Lureen's caracter has also a very tragic fate.

It was an incredible performance by Anne and I think you stated exactly what it was all about. Great observation pierralex.
-
Never thought of any similarity bwtween Ennis and Lureen. Interesting observation. In some ways she is very different from Ennis - she is the pursuer, the one in charge, though. It was sad though when she came to realize what all those fishing trips meant. I am surprised that she told Ennis BBM was Jack's favorite place. I wish she would have put more effort into carrying out his wishes, at least before she knew what it meant.
I thought her grief may have caused her to not pay attention to the details - her nails. However, it would have taken a while for her teeth to get that bad.

I am not sure what you mean by this. What is wrong with Lureen's teeth?

I think that's what her teeth looked like before Jack died. That's what cigarettes and coffee do over the years. Her teeth looked like that of any other 39 year old small town Texas lady.
-
Thanks. I kind of forgot - this movie is pre-Crest white strips.
-
I defently agree that Michelle and Ann were good in ther roles..they played the part of two women in a marriage that didn't work out,, where they once thought there would be love and happinesss turned into bitterness and disappointment. Lureen in the begining was happy, and hopefull and full of spirit and by the end of the movie she was bitter and lonely. Her entire marriage was a lie in a sense...her husband found happiness and love with someone else..
Alma was also disappointed with her own loveless marriage as well..she wa also deeply hurt and bitter about her husbands true love for someone else. I think both of the characters were very well played. One of the reasons I like this movie so much is that it didn't hide anything and it showed what a loveless marriage is when two people are trapped. When society didicates that a man and women marry and have children and thats it. It also showed what real true love is, and what real commitment is with the love of Jack and Ennis throughout a 20 year period..the whole movie is just wonderful and heartbreaking

Did anyone other than me think that Lureen went after and married Jack for reasons other than love?
I mean the book tells us Jack was short, heavy in the haunches and had buck teeth. Doesn't sound like something a rodeo queen would be interested in.
It is just possible she went after Jack and got pregnant to spite her father, who she didn't particularly like anyway. Remember her happiness when Jack cut him a new butt at Thanksgiving.
She didn't seem too concerned that Jack was taking off for Wyoming again after all these years, at least not like Alma did.
She didn't really love the kid. She couldn't care less the kid was dyslexic and couldn't read at 15.
She never seemed to be concerned they never had another kid, possibly because there was nothing going on between her and Jack.
It just seems to me that possibly because the movie had attractive actors we are missing something here.
When you look at the marriage there is just something missing that should be there but isn't .
-
I agree, Patriot, with your observations; I do think the film establishes an initial attraction between Jack and Lureen, but of course the relationship sours. It was suggested in another thread that Lureen got accidentally pregnant on that first "date" and thus the marriage.....Lureen, in between the scenes, obviously becomes more disenchanted with the marriage, until, as Jack says, it could be a marriage over the phone!

Very good point Patriot1. I wish there were more clues in the story about her. Of all 4 main characters she gets the least of description for us to go on except for the telephone call in the end.

That is a good point patriot but well i really love that performance of Ann and Michelle!!!
Alma was the woman that you feel symphathy she looks inocent and cute but throught the movie she changes like cowboycody says she naggs ennis to get what she wants which is not fair. and you know i realized somehting monroe was in love for Alma since the begining his eyes say it all.
Lureen, well to me she is spoil brat that just wanted a toy to get she got inlove of the image of Jack the promising rodeo not Jack Twist she was in love of the fame suddenly married she realized it was not what she expected and hide herself on the numbers.

I agree Patriot... I always saw a conflict between Lureen and his father... to marry Jack had been a pretext to go against his father (who didn't liked rodeo cowboy) once again.
Anyway I saw a kind of regret in Lureen tears when she is at the phone with Ennis.... these tears started at moment in which she realize how much love there was between Ennis and his defunct husband...how much, as Alma, she never had been loved.
I consider the proposal to Ennis to bring Jack ashes to BBM as final act of respect for their love.

It's my same thought
