Title: What would you say if you could step into a scene?
Post by: dirtbiker on Nov 15, 2006, 08:01 PM
I got this idea from surfing around....  So what would you say if you could step into a scene?

The two scenes I'd like to step in:

When they were parting ways after the summer of 1963 -  I'd like to say to Ennis to not pass up this opportunity to continue his relationship with Jack.

On their last get-together - I'd ask Ennis to say something to Jack and not sit there like a log, when Jack said he missed him so much, he couldn't hardly stand it.   :\'(

OUCH!

Tough one  :s)  Same for me, I would step in the same scene and kick Ennis *ss until next week to go back to Jack.  Forget the wedding moron, you know who you are in love with.  :-\\ :\'(

I would like to step into the after the divorce scene. When Jack comes to see Ennis, and here is what I would say:

You idiot, tell him to wait until you have brought the girls home. If you send him away now you will loose him.

This would be said to Ennis. Chameau and DB have already tried to convince him to stay with Jack after they get down from Brokeback the first time and clearly that didn't help...

That's the same scene I'd like to step into, Esme and I'd say pretty much the same

You can't turn him away just like that. He's just driven 14 hours to see you because of one call (card) Tell him to stay until you've taken the girls home and then come back and TALK TO HIM.

('Course, I'd also like to step into the SNIT and just say "don't mind me...carry on" ^-^ ;D)

I'd also step into the divorce scene Tell Jack to wait and go inside, then I'd have a long talk with Ennis. Then I'd jump into FNIT. would'nt say nothin though just watch and listen.

I will give a twist and propose 2 scenes in which I will NOT want to step in:

1.  The Reunion Kiss.

2.  The Dozy Embrace.

Any intervention on my part would only mar the moment.

The scene I would most like to intervene is when Ennis leaves Jack in the last meeting.  Frankly, I wouldn't know what to say in order to assuage Jack's bitterness, but I think that ANY form of intervention would have helped a bit -- perhaps even keep them together for the future.

I thnk I'd meet Ennis as he came out of the courtroom after the divorce and say, "Drop everything and go to Texas now - by train if the pickup won't make it."

He could have arranged to meet Jack well away from where he lived and they could have talked without the pressure of Ennis's job and the girls and everyone in Riverton who, Ennis thought, was watching him.

Since we are scene jumping I would definitly jump into the Sene where Jack is attacked by the bashers, armed to the teeth and SAVE JACK"S LIFE. NO DOUBT.

There are so many scenes I'd love to step into.

The first one is just me being silly: I'd love to take Lureen's place and say "What are you waiting for cowboy?  A Matin' call?" and then the scene would pretty much play out like in the movie.  ^-^

I think I'd like to first step into the parting scene from 1963 and jump in front of Jack's truck and tell him to turn around to go get Ennis and I'd tell Ennis to get in that truck and talk to Jack.

Their first camping trip: I'd tell Ennis to pursue that sweet life and like the ghost of Christmas Future I'd warn him that if he keeps turning Jack down, one word is going to haunt him forever- the word yes- that's all you have to say and things will be different for you both.

The divorce scene: I'd tell Jack not to go anywhere; I'd grab Ennis and shake him and tell him that that man just drove 14 hours all full of hope and you are not going to send him away like that. While Ennis drops the girls off I'd tell Jack to stand up for himself and we'd share that knowledge that it wasn't Alma or the girls keeping them apart and then we'd call Ennis out on that.

The confrontation scene: First of all I want to just hug them both. I wouldn't jump in and stop it because they need to get those things out of them. But after the fight was over I'd make each sit on either side of me while I mediated the issues and offered up my opinion and advice and pretty much say that this has gone on long enough, you're both suffering because you want so badly to be together etc etc so we need to reslolve this now. Then I'd warn them that they are not leaving until there is a real resolution and introduce them to my stubbornness.

At the Twist Ranch- I'd like to just smack Papa Twist and maybe unload a few vulgarities on him for what he did to Jack.

Jack's death- First of all I wish I could jump into that scene with a gun and shoot those men and save Jack. But if I was powerless to that and too late in arriving, I'd roll him over, hold his hand and comfort him so he wouldn't be laying there dying alone.  :\'(

If I had to limit myself to just one scene I'd have to pick Jack's death (I have yet to watch that in it's entirety- I can't bear to) but I'd want to be there for him; he deserved better than to not only die like that but to die alone.

Yes, it was at this moment when he probably felt he was all alone.

Brilliant post LJN, you've just about covered everything for me :)

Your first one isn't silly at all, or if it is, I'm silly too (well, I said it didn't I? ::) ) cause I would give just about anything to be in Lureen's place in those scenes <^( Me and a million others, I'm sure ;)  <^(

Oh, heartbreaking, heartbreaking, heartbreaking.   :\'(

I remember reading an excellent fanfic called "Slow Fade" where Jack was dying on the side of the road (although it was leaning towards the accident more than the tire irons), and he was crying about having to die alone, and all he could think about was Ennis...and I'm off crying again.

And as for the stepping into a scene; when they first depart after Brokeback, I would be there yelling "FOR GOD'S SAKE, DON'T WALK AWAY! DON'T LEAVE HIM! JACK, DRIVE BACK! NOOOOO!" and probably make a fool of myself.  But that's what I feel like screaming every time I see that scene; I know that the times were different, homosexuality was a sin in everyone's eyes, the men had obligations to keep and prove families, men with tire irons were always on the prowl etc, but oh...if only Jack had driven back, picked up Ennis from the alleyway and kissed him and held him, and urged him to take the risk...

...eep.  Got a little carried away there.

I remember the first time watching the death scene and I was so shocked , Did'nt expect it,  Did'nt wanna accept it  Still don't wanna. I'd jump into the next scene and me and Ennis would comfort each other. Brings tears everytime. Damn.

We would all do this, together!  Wouldn't it be great?!  Down the road would descend at full speed this big group of crazy fags and fag-hags and FOG's (just using amusing language for the sake of amusement...which was more trouble than it was worth to explain), young and old, all different colors and sizes and languages even -- those guys would run for the hills!

LOL!  :8

The divorce scene for me, too, so much.  Do NOT send Jack off.

And then, the "confrontation" scene:  as Jessi's poem says, "turn that truck around," I'd yell at Ennis.  Don't leave Jack this way.

Oh, this is wonderful, LJN, all of it.  (Boy, I sure I want you on my side!)

LOL -- you being Lureen in that scene.  (Can I come and watch?  Sorry -- crude me.)

Except I could just cry right now, about Jack dying alone...  And don't forget to tell him how much Ennis loves him.

I'd jump into the Siesta Motel room scene as the maid and install little tiny video cameras ALL AROUND THE ROOM.!

I'd be the desk clerk and install little tiny video cameras ALL AROUND THE ROOM.

I'd be the bellboy and install little tin..........Well you get the picture!. So would I.  SMILES.

That said, I'd offer Alma a couple stiff drinks after seeing the kiss. She could use em. Did I say that?......(slinks away in shame).

Hehee! Love it!

I would deliver a swift kick to Aguirre's nether-regions to prevent him from spying on the boys in their own private moment; whenever I see that face emerging from the binoculars I feel seriously annoyed.

I would tell Aguirre to give me the bimoculars and get back to his office, I would keep an eye on the boys and then give Jack the message about his uncle ;)
I'd also step into the scene at the beginning in Aguirre's trailer, and the one with baby Bobby (or the Thanksgiving scene) and tell both Aguirre and LD Newsome to learn some manners and and respect, just because they have money it doesn't give them the right to speak to people like they're something they just scraped off the bottom of their shoe :X

I would love to jump into many scenes, not just one.

I would go way back into the past and shoot the people that killed Earl, just so that Ennis won't be corrupted, and Earl and Rich might have a better shot at life together.  If that's too late, next.

The Brokeback incident was too beautiful to interfere with so I would leave them alone up there.  What I would do is to convince Ennis to ask Jack for a ride after they come down the mountain, or convince Jack to give Ennis a ride and they drove to Lightning Flat instead.  Too late?  Next.

Convince Ennis not to get marry, and convince Jack not to get to know Laureen.  Failed?  Next.

After the divorce scene, convince Ennis not to send Jack away, but wink at him and tell him to wait in cabin till evening.  Then Ennis can have fun with his girls, bring them home to their mother afterward, then spend the rest of the week with Jack.  I agree that Ennis need to be kick in the ar** sometimes to wake him up.

In the final meeting, make Ennis hold Jack after he said,"Sometime I miss you so much, I can hardly stand it".  Then tell them they have to stay together to survive.

In Jack's death scene, I would shoot, stab, or cut-up his attackers thus giving Jack another chance.  Then telling him he's not safe here in Texas anymore and he has to see Ennis.  But if I'm to late in saving him, I would call an ambulance and stay with Jack to make sure he won't drown in his own blood.  If he's dying, I would be there holding his bloody, broken body so he would know someone is with him.

In his scene with Jack's parents, I would create some diversions to get the Twists out of the house so that Ennis could take some of Jack ashes to be scattered in BBM.  If I failed that....

I would hug and cry with Ennis in the final scene.

If I have to choose one, it would be Jack's death scene.  If he's alive, there will always be chances.

I'd like to jump into the scene where Jack is tempted by Randall and tell him that he could confide in me . It's a shame that Jack had no one to confide in , to discuss his thoughts and feelings with. Just a  freind to listen. When Randall propositined him Jack probably immediatly thought of Ennis the one he truly loved and wanted .He had to be questioning himself.

Then I would jump into the scene with LaShawn and ask her who won that "Aggie" game?( If she'd let me talk)

Breathe...Peel....... " Aw hell go on and get your peek on cowboy !"   I thought he would swallow his cigarette he was so ...tempted but afraid he'd give himself away.  SO adorable.

Wonderful choices, aintfoolin.  I would be afraid to step into this scene.  I fear that Jack would realize that I noticed, and I would not like to embarass him at this point -- or make him more cautious.  I would rather encourage him to look, if he were not too self-conscious.

It might be an idea to jump into the Cadillac and frighten Lureen off, then Jack wouldn't marry her and settle in Childress, and might end up back closer to Ennis, and without a wife and family and money he might be more likely to try to get ennis to spend time with him, even if that meant working together till they got enough for a place of their own. Alma? she'd be long gone - I'd either persuade Ennis to break his engagement or turn up at the church and when they ask if there are any reasons why the couple shouldn't marry I'd come up with one.

What they needed was time and no pressure from the existence of wives and families - then things might have developed differently.

Okay, here you go -- I'll volunteer to go hang out with Alma while her Ennis is gone for the summer, and I'll bring her out to the lesbian side, and we'll figure out how she's going to break it to Ennis when he gets back.  We'll probably run away to Berkeley or Boston and leave E and J to their own devices...

Thanks, Mr. T.  Of course, my girlfriend Alma and I could always...well never mind -- I could entertain myself with a whole scenario, but I won't.  In reality, though, she's not my type.  I think Lureen and I could get along...and she wouldn't be such an ice queen, either.

Thanks, Mr. T.  Of course, my girlfriend Alma and I could always...well never mind -- I could entertain myself with a whole scenario, but I won't.  In reality, though, she's not my type.  I think Lureen and I could get along...and she wouldn't be such an ice queen, either.

kathy

So perhaps you can do more by ALSO intervening in the scene where Lureen asks Jack to dance with her.  YOu have an excellent choice -- either you beat her to Jack, or make her take a turn with you on the dance floor.  Either way, you would be a winner!

That has the makings of another topic - if Jack hadn't met Lureen again, after the hat-returning episode, ie if she hadn;t effectively stalked him, because she was there at least partly to look for him, I think, what would have happened? If you could intervene and prevent that meeting, Jack might not have settled in Texas, might have gone back to Wyoming, might have seen Ennis again much earlier.....

I would jump into any scene, grab Jack and Ennis, bring them back to the future with me , walk into the offices of People magazine and tell them : THESE ARE  THE MOST SEXIEST MEN ALIVE TODAY!!!!!!  IT'S A TIE.     I know I'm off topic but Clooney again?

I'm not sure it would've made much difference if Jack hadn't got together with Lureen, Bobby was only 7 months old at the time of the reunion, so assuming Luren got pregnant as a result of what happened in the back of the car (which I think is the general consensus), it would only have been 16 months earlier that Ennis and Jack would've got back together (although every day they were apart was a day too many :( ). And Jack only settled in Texas because Ennis wouldn't settle with him anywhere, if he had, Jack would've been outta Texas quicker than you can say "gone fishing"  ;) If anything, marrying Lureen and having Bobby seems to be the catalyst that made Jack get in touch with Ennis again, so maybe they would never have got back together if he hadn't met Lureen. So personally, I'd keep that scene as it is (it's my favourite scene of Jack without Ennis), unless of course I could change it so it was me in the car with Jack <^(

Very interesting ideas here.  Interesting in the sense that Lureen can be thouigh of as a force that pulled them apart as well as bring them together.

If there was anything that could be done to stop Jack from going to Texas: it may be hring him the summer after Brokeback or offering him money.  I think it was Aguirre's refusal to employ him the next summer that probably pushed him to try rodeoing in Texas.

A catfight?  That's an option.  Anything short of murder to prevent Jack from meeting her.  Don't get me wrong, I like Laureen in her own way.  Just not with Jack.

I would step into the last fight scene and tell Jack that he has'nt lost Ennis forever and that he needed to hear those things. Then I'd try to convince him  to give  Ennis an ultimatum. Give him a week to give up an answer wether or not he was going to continue the relationship or else.    then tell Ennis he was going to go to LF and wait for an anwer to it and to meet him there....... BUT DON'T GO BACK TO TEXAS. I beleive Ennis would have been there. Pronto. Could'nt live without him. 2 cents.

The divorce scene.  I never understood why Ennis sent Jack away since he only had the girls for the weekend & Jack had driven 14 hours to get there.  He was obviously glad to see him by the way they hugged.  I agree with others - that Jack could have holded up in a nearby motel or camp site until the girls left.  Again - attribute that to Ennis' paranoia about others seeing them.

Leaving Brokeback -  c'mon Jack, at least offer a ride!  I would have insisted that at least they go for a beer. $)

A couple of scenes I would like to step into:

1.  Leaving Brokeback (the first separation) - I would tell Jack to turn his truck around and go back to Ennis!

2.  Ennis' wedding - I would beg Ennis not to go thru with it, because he doesn't love Alma.

3.  Last fight - I would want to make them both sit down and really *talk* to each other, get all those feelings out in the open.

4.  Jack's death - If I could not stop the attack, I would at least go to Jack and hold him in my arms so he would not die alone.

I love all your answers.  I think i would jump into the scene after Jack drove the 1200 miles.
"Look," I'd say, "Ennis, don't treat him like that.  He drove all this way because he loves you.  And, you love him too.  You keep using him, it's killing him.  You care more than that.  Do you want him to go to some other man?  Do you want him to die?  No.  There is only one answer and one love for you, so be with him always, no matter what.  Denying your love and serving your fear is not the answer.  Love him.  Make him happy.  Don't abuse him.  You wouldn't like it if he did that to you.  Do you want him to whittle your meetings down to once every four years, or ten?  You'd go crazy... maybe you should, to see how he feels.  Some other guy will come along and love him like you won't... every day!  He sets his life aside for you.  Love him.  You could be so happy.  He is the best of the best."  He'd have to agree to shut me up.

Then I'd say to Jack:  "It's not over.  Let Ennis think about this, you go back to Texas and talk to Lureen about a divorce and a settlement.  Then come back to Riverton and buy that ranch you always wanted.  You'll be halfway home.  All Ennis does is work on ranches anyway, it might as well be yours.  You'll see him everyday until it's finally permanent.  Giving up is not the answer any more than Mexico or some other man.  There is only one answer and one love for you.  No tears, you have a mountain in front of you and you have to think and plan carefully.  Go.  And, good luck... all your dreams are about to come true.  One last hug as star crossed lovers.  Now go."  Ennis follows Jack to his truck.  Jack gets in, starts it, and rests his elbow on the open window.  Ennis puts his hand on Jack's arm like Jack did to him in SNIT and says, "I was never any good without you."  Jack says, "me neither."

Happy Jack drives away.  Ennis is as happy as a worried block of wood can be. It's okay.  He doesn't know what's good for him and it's Jack's life we have to save.

i sound like the fairy godmother.  I think they needed one.

That scene indeed would have been the perfect turning point for them.  If only they did have their fairy godmother there!  They have a slew of fairy godmothers and godfathers here -- we sure know how to make them happy.

Ennis was so paranoid.  Men hung around together all the time in that world -- most men's lives, who worked ranches, etc., were spent in the company of men.  But just that truck driving by made Ennis think the world knew about him and Jack.

Actually I know the feeling, from years ago, knowing I could get shot, so to speak, being with another woman, seeming to not need the company of men, in the wrong place and the wrong time.  He had reason to be cautious, but he took it way too far.  Not his fault, though.  But if Jack had had access to him more often, he could have freed him from some of the paranoia.  Except that Jack wasn't cautious enough.

My friend Robert used to recount how easy it was in the recent past to be paranoid, especially when there was real danger of being exposed or being "picked-on.

Yes, Ennis was perhaps a bit too paranoid, and Jack was a bit too risky.  To achive a happy middle where both would be more relaxed -- that would have made any form of intervention worthwhile...

I would jump in at that scene where Jack drove all those miles too. That was so sad.  I don't think Ennis knew what to do at all and needed to be told.

I would also tell Jack - please be careful at home.  His death was so unnecessary.

I would have told both of them then, find a new place somewhere then...

I have often thought about that scene by the river when they took their first fishing trip.  Ennis refers to "this thing" that grabs them.  If I were Jack I would have wanted to say...

"Ennis you talk about this thing between us.  I don't see it as a thing.  For me it's love. That may be hard for you to hear, but we're out here all alone.  I'm not ashamed to say that you have been the most important person in my heart since we were up at Brokeback.  If you wanna hit me, go ahead.  The first punch didn't change my feelings."

I suppose he was just shy but my GAWD , how modest is that? your up in the mountains ,isolated from the world and everything. Who cares if your words don't come out right. Say SOMETHING!!! Thank goodness Jack was outgoing and actually liked to talk alot. Even bitched to high heaven alot but he made life very interesting up there. It's a long journey from there to SNIT. It seems as if the greatest number of votes went to the after divorce or to the "this thing"scenes(in this last one, with how a pleasure I´d punched Ennis while telling him:Don´t feel afraid of the words or you´ll feel afraid of the feelings, piece of blockhead¡)
But,at the end,all this had happenned when they´ve already separated themselves and spent 4 years far from each other.No.To avoid all this,I talk to Ennis in the time between their separation and his wedding to Alma-not immediately they parted from Brokeback because feeling were too disturbed as to understand things correctly-.I told him that he´d prefer suffer than go through the shame and the danger of living with Jack and that perhaps he´d realised too late that life is too short to spend it living another person life. That he must run to Jack and he already knew what to do...

Yeah the 14 hour drive is the one, I would tell Ennis to go get Jack, say "look you caught me off guard, let's have dinner after I take the girls home"  or some such.  I am not saying even some ground breaking relationship would start but the damned denial on Enni's part would at least be breaking down.

I rather like MPJ's suggestion - there was a three-month ( at least) gap between their parting and Ennis's marriage. Ennis was presumably somewhere round Riverton or in that part of the state and Jack said he was going up to LF to his patrents' place so it would have been relatively easy for them to meet and at least talk, though neither of them at this point was maybe capable of an objective discussion.

I suppose one could also at this point have told Jack not to go to Texas; though he was hardly likely to want to stick around in LF, I've often wondered if he really had to go as far as Texas to go on rodeoing.
Title: Re: What would you say if you could step into a scene?
Post by: babytammy7 on Sep 03, 2007, 12:21 PM
There are so many scenes I'd love to step into.

LJN, CSC and Tpe......

Why are you doing like that? You know, you're just killing me!!! I'm at work, alone in my office, crying rivers to the point I can not breathe....... :\'(  :\'(  :\'(  :\'(

However I don't want to change neither scene, 'cause if the story were different it wouln't be so beautiful, so heartbreaking, so deep, and we all wouldn't be here. They did as much as they could in that wrong place and wrong time they were living. Though all of us had talked to Ennis about living with Jack (divorce scene, confontation scene....)he never had done anything about it because his terrible fears!!! Though they were not married, Ennis' fears would have been stronger than their love, you know that, we all saw that in BBM. Look:As you wish, at the end of the summer of 1963, Jack give Ennis a ride, then they have more time to speak. Jack is brave so he ask Ennis for a life together and then Ennis.......tell his Earl and Rich's story!!!!!!  %&) ;and the same thing at the reunion scene, at the divorce scene, again and again. It doesn't matter how many and hard times we speak to him about losing Jack, about love, about living together.....Ennis only realized, only learned with Jack's death. So Jack's death, so unjust, so horrible, so cruel, was almost necessary, and, as Annie P. said, it was the only way to resolve their problems, their complicated situation, their hurted relationship.
It is hard for me to say that  :\'(  :\'(  :\'(  :\'(

However, if I really had to be to just one scene I would be with Ennis after Jack's death, just in the Jack I swear scene, and I would tell him: Friend, I only want you to know one thing about that trip that hurt you so much;listen, when Jack went to Mexico, he was crying..... :\'(  :\'(  :\'(
That is the only thing I want Ennis to know.....Is the only thing he never knew about his Jack in the film, just the thing is hurting us so much.....Jack was not happy making love with another man in Mexico as Ennis thought perhaps........Omg, Jack's tears.

Sorry for my english. Oh Brokies please don't write posts like those, it is not good for my PBS; I'm so sad now.

Personally i wouldn't step in any scene. I like it the way it is- no matter the sorrow and unspoken words. The true meaning of the story is that people should say everything to each other no matter what the consequences are.
I say this, because i've lost my best mate and lover this way- not talking that much to each other, although he or me called every evening there were times when the conversation just lasted for about 1 min. I think every scene is made to the point of perfection and should remain that way.

Though i really love what you people wrote. Nice choices of scenes  <^( <^(

I´m really sorry for your lose, iamakashiMAN;maybe the problem was not call or not every day,but what you say on every call, the level of comunication you have.If both of you didn´t open to each other,to call every day can be even an obligation, not what you do for pleasure, because you want to.Well,it´s not my bussineess,so excuse me if I´ve been to bold.
The only thing I can tell you if that you´ve got a friend if you want to speak about this;I also know what it means because I lost the love of my life because I couldn´t wait a little more and she couldn´t wait a little less...Here I´m,then, when you want.So long¡.

So true.  The story as is moves us as much as it kills us.  Deep in my heart, I know that you are right.

I am in a silly mood at the moment, so all I can think of is that I'd have jumped into each scene where the women first appear ( Alma, Lureen and Cassie) and shouted "Go away"! until they did.

That's a tough one...

So many scenes I would like to step in...Mainly to ask Ennis what on earth is going through his mind when he let's Jack leave him...or what he thinks about when he says Jack I swear...

So many more. But I wouldn't dare.

They would if a slew of mad Brokies got to them!  I love your image, WW, like a bunch of crows -- we'd scare them away!

We'd sit them down and tell them outrageous tales about things they then knew nothing about.  And then we'd find them other boyfriends and husbands or whatever (I already said I'd whisk Alma away into the land of the lesbians).

In a way iot would be a favor to Cassie to warn her off so that she wouldn't waste emotional energy on someone who was never going to respond as she wanted.

Also perhaps in some scenes jack or ennis could be prompted to say I LOVE YOU as they never did say that to each other. I think it would come easy for jack to say those three little words but i think ennis would have a problem saying it.

sometimes actions speak louder than words  perhaps they didnt feel the need to say it to each other because you know when someone loves you.

I'd step into the scene where Ennis comes to ask for Jack's ashes, distract Sr. Twist so that Mrs. Twist could slip Ennis the ashes. His statement , "We got a family plot and he's goin in it"  let's me know that the ashes/urn  are still somewhere in the house. It was Jack's wish to rest peacfully on BBM, his fav place. He knew that only  Ennis would  find a way to take him there but probably figured he'd need his mother's help to do it. She said " come back and see us again" Maybe if he came back , she would give them to him perhaps upon her husband's death, but, sorry OMT, had I been able to jump into the scene , he would'nt have to wait that long to have Jack rest where he wanted.

I´m not so sure that Ennis would bury Jack´s ashes with the two shirts, because this is  more than a souvenir from a loving person for Ennis;these clothings are a living reminder to him for never denying his true self, his inner feelings,as he had been doing with Jack half his life. The two shirts are an eternel souvenir of their love, but also an eternal lesson for Ennis.

 Lightnin Flat,

I used to think that Ennis would bury the shirts too but, have since changed my mind about it. Apparently Jack left a  last wish to be cremated and have his ashes spread on BBM, a specific place, and apparently had mentioned BB  to Lureen in some form. I also found it strange that the ashes were split like this. Who's idea this was? I don't know  Lureen thought it a pretend place, something Jack just made up, ??? But the shirts?, well I think he meant Ennis to keep them with him. A reminder to Ennis that he was there and always will be. A gift to feel.

Ennis, no doubt would have probably made frequent trips up to BBM after Jack's death partly, to reflect and remember how close he was to Jack or to feel Jack's presence up there, especially on specific anniversary dates like the day he met Jack etc....  But the shirts were his to have and to hold. whenever he wanted.
I think Jack would have wanted this way.  The ashes spread on BBM+theshirts sends  a strong message to Ennis... After all is said and done...Remember me this way. This is only my opinion

In former posts I said that I´d stepped ,not into a scene, but into this time between their separation and Ennis´marriage to give them time to meditate without the emotional charge they were suffering during the first times. But,if it didn´t work,I´d do it when Jack told Ennis:-"The true is sometimes I miss you so much,I can hardly stand it.", and this,as ever, didn´t know what to say in return.I´d tell him that this was the moment to decide to give Jack an opportunity, beyond his fears, because he´s not happy in his marriage with Lureen.Nothing nor nobody else, then,is placed between them already, only themselves.-"Don´t be silly-I´d told-because this man has been waiting for you during too many years as to not give him a hope.Maybe one day you´ll regret it.Or at least, tell him you also miss him because you love him as nobody else before."

Ouch----felt so bad for Ennis at the end---he'd never have another lover, I think, male or female, he was so lost in the past.
To me he was a real person, so I guess I'd have wanted to wait a minute or two after the very last scene, and even knowing it
would be interrupting his grief, knock on the door, say I was in the trailer down the road....and try to be a friend.  Because it
looked like he didn't have any friends, either.
If we're allowed a second choice, I'd have liked to be loaded with money, and stumble into the scene where Jack proposes more,
yet again, and Ennis loses his cooking-ware in the stream, and say  I had a ranch that needed tending and it had a great, modern
cabin, and the pay was good......and maybe let them find a way to live together.
Wouldn't let the movie be what it was, but would have been a way to help out.  Tony.

How sweet, Tony.  Of course you're right and we all know Brokeback Mountain wouldn't be Brokeback Mountain with a happy ending.  But I love your ideas -- to be a friend to Ennis.  Or to give them a place where they could work a ranch together but yet seemingly, to the eyes of the world, just be working there...and then they could ease into things easier.

Thank you for exploring Jack's motivation. I never thought of Jack's intentionally leaving the shirts for Ennis to find. This makes perfect sense! I always wondered about Jack's mom sending Ennis upstairs. It is so clear now that you said it. Jack came out to his mother about Ennis, if not to both his parents. His mom definitely knew about the shirts, and expected Ennis to find them. She nodded slightly in recognition of the shirts, and quickly pulled a paper bag for him, even blocking the father's view while putting them in the bag. I love the little extra caress she put on the shirt just before letting go. Like saying good bye to Jack.  :\'( This is going to make me cry for the first time while writing in the forum.

That last scene in the kitchen is phenomenal! It ties together so many elements, from Jack's childhood (a loving religious mother and a bad-tempered old man) to Jack's relationship to his parents after meeting Ennis, and finally a foreshadow of what will happen with Jack's ashes and Ennis' relationship with Jack's mom.  :\'(

Of course she knew about the shirts. Of course she meant for Ennis to find them. And of course she did it because that's what Jack told her, that if anything happens to him, to take good care of them, and find a way to give them to Ennis! I didn't get Jack at first, but the more I read about him in the forums, the more I love him, as everyone else.  :\'(

What a lovely womand, too! Jack's mother was compassionate for Ennis from the beginning, and yet had to show restraint in front of the old man.  :\'( :\'( :\'( If only the two of them, Ennis and the mother, can spend some private time together. I would love to see Ennis visiting lightening flat after the old passed away. Perhaps he will help run the ranch for Mrs. Twist.

I got to stop now. It's getting too emotional to keep typing.

This has always been a favorite story of my heart, too, that Ennis and Jack's mother could find some comfort with each other...after the old man goes, that is.  I'm sure Ennis would love to help her, and he would love to hear more about Jack from her; and Ennis could tell her a lot about the Jack he knew...  Beautiful thought.

Yes, that would be a great way to end the story in a happy way, to provide closure that many found lacking.

I can see the new ending - Ennis visiting both parents over the years for thanksgiving and christmas. Then as the old man got older, Ennis visits more often, and staying in Jack's room, helping with the chores.

The old man finally accepts Ennis, and by extension, Jack, regretting all the mean thing he used to do, and passed away peaceful, knowing Jack and Ennis would forgive him, telling Ennis to take Jack's ashes to Brokeback.

Ennis and Mrs. Twist live in the ranch for many years. In the evening, Ennis would tell her about the things they used to do sheep herding, the stories that Jack used to tell. She would tell Ennis about Jack's childhood, and the stories he told her about Ennis.

In the end, Mrs Twist passes peacefully in Ennis' arms. In the tradition of Jack, she wants half her ashes to stay in the family plot, and the other to be next to Jack (and Ennis) in Brokeback Mountain.

Ennis was again alone in the ranch, having inherited it from Mrs Twist. He developed it into a resort, for city slickers who want to experience western living. The man who never traveled further than the coffee pot looking for the handle now has the world come knocking on his door.

His ranch became a success, especially after he hired a few good ranch hands. One of them, (fill in your favorite description), over the years, became the love that Ennis missed. They grew old together. And Ennis left the ranch to his new love, with a will to take to Brokeback Mountain his own ashes, as well as Jack and Mrs. Twist's.

The final scene...at the beginning of a sunny day, with sunshine reflecting off the snowy peaks of Brokeback Mountain, and ice chips floating past the tree lined riverbank, and the end of the night's fire dying ember crackling in the morning breeze, a quiet man, surrounded by Ennis' family (his daughters and grandchildren), slowly pour Jack's and Ennis' ashes into the fire. Fade to black...

Excuse me -- you should just go ahead and write this story!  (Do you read any of the fanfic?  I don't recall if you've said you do or not.)  I especially like your treatment of old Mr. Twist -- to change him, not discount him.  To let him come to peace with Jack through Ennis...  That's beautiful.

Thanks, Kathy. That was my first attempt at writing, anything, in a long time. I took a creative writing class in high school. I enjoyed keeping a journal for a few years, but stopped the practice, for some unknown reason. All the discussion in the forum is inspiring, and I just let the characters, as alive and as real as they are in my mind, to follow their own course. I can't imagine Mr. Twist staying mad at Ennis.

I will be sure to look into turning this into a proper screen play format. Maybe someone will turn this into a real filming project for some students. I'd love to see a happy ending. There are so many possibilities, too, I didn't want to stay up too too late writing out the rest of it. For example, the meeting with Ennis' grand children, how he taught them to ride, to hunt. Then when they gathered together for the ashes ceremony, they would all tell stories of how Ennis showed them different parts of the Mountain, where he and Jack visited. As Ennis remembers the past, there would be flash back to the happiest moments in his life. The new love character would be very interesting and complex, to accept Jack as the love of Ennis' life. I see so many possibilities.

Brokeback got me good, that's for damn sure.

 <^( <^(

It's easy to become emotional about this film, it's so powerful, but I love your post! I loved Jack's mom. She was a great understanding lady. Her statement about leaving Jack's room like it was "was he was a boy". Jack is now 39 going on 40. Maybe she meant when Jack was a 19 year old boy. As a loving mother, Jack will always be her little boy, but perhaps Jack told her about his relationship with Ennis in "63" his first visit back to LF after BBM. I feel she definitly knew of her son's affair with Ennis and agreed to be caretaker of the shirts. I think as you said that Jack told her that the shirts were to go to Ennis, if something happned to him.

Jack had so much faith in the man who only went around the coffe pot to find the handle that he just knew that one day Ennis would end up somehow at LF and claim his gift of love with his mother's help. She not only knew , but played a part in the shirts landing in their  rightful owner's hands.

She did invite Ennis back. I like to believe he took her up on the offer. BTW your story ending is wonderful. If it's ever made into a movie , I'll be one of the first in line to see it. Good luck and thanks.

The more I learn about the depth of Jack's love for Ennis, the more tears come whenever one of those moments come.

As for extended ending, we will need to get permission from Annie Proulx and anyone else holding the copyright. I am totally ignorant of this business so was only expressing how I felt. I am glad you like it, too. Can I sit next to you at the premiere? We can share the same box of tissues.  :)

Then again, with a happy ending, maybe we won't need tissues.

Oh we'll definitly need tissues! Knowing how the story ended in BBM, then to have them both redeemed in your screenplay/movie the tears would flow out of sheer joy.
I'd be honored to sit next to you and we as two true Brokies can bawl our eyes out together!  ,,,Jack and Ennis forever. Thanks.

I would be honored to have anything to do with Brokeback Mountain, to be associated with it in any way. I feel privileged to be a part of this forum.

Ennis and Jack forever!!! ;) I guess you like Jack better, so you can wear the black hat.

Quit telling us the details, and write it -- why not write it as a story, not a screenplay format?  I think you need to.  For you, and for us.

You know, you are right. Thanks, Kathy. I never thought of it that way. I think I do need to write it. As a way of visualizing what can be in the future. Just as, the part of Brokeback Mountain after Jack died, took me beyond my own experiences in the past, and lifted me up to a higher plane, perhaps writing this extended ending will lift me even higher.

:^^) Thanks, Kathy, for the kick in the butt to get me to see what I needed. Will you join us (aintfoolin and me) when it gets made into a movie. :)

I join to the others brokies demanding that you can write it as soon as you can . It´s so tender and nice that it could be a good relief for all of us, the best way to make Ennis learn from BBM lessons and the best confirmation that these lessons and the message they leave us can be more positive that we can see at first sight...
But tell me:Although I´m far away from you, will you let me join to all of you in the theatre to cry all together until we can´t stand it?.Thanks.

Thanks everyone, especially lancecowboy2007 for the take on Ennis and Jack's mom.

I had a sense all throughout the scenes in LF that both of them were straining to make a connection, mindful of the presence of Mr. Twist.

If I could enter into this scene, I would probably try to find someway of getting Mr. Twist out of the room.

Yes,I´d do the same in order that Ennis and Mrs. Twist could speak easily, and maybe she could give him Jack´s ashes to carry them to BBM.I really think that she knew everything about him and her son,and showed her very comprehensive and a little accomplice-do you say it so?-with Ennis´feelings. She knew in her inner that both of them were the two persons who had loved Jack the most. And sometimes I´ve wondered, bearing in mind her looks at him,if in his paper bag,he was carrying indeed his lover ashes because Mrs. Twist had put them inside without her husband´s knowledge...

It would've also been interesting to watch the dynamics unfold if Mrs. Twist went up to Jack's room, after Ennis had sufficient time by himself up there.   :\'(

I agree.  This is a beautiful idea.  Now I've not read many "Jack dead" fanfic stories, but I don't think this scenario has been written, and it's so beautiful!  It really, really is.  I think it would be a wonderful experience for you to do it.  And we all want to read it.  It is so full of heart and wisdom and healing...

This was a very important scene to me, too.  I had such strong feelings for Mrs. Twist (and I almost bid on buying her clothes on the ebay auction, but didn't; and almost was going to be her for Halloween, except no one would get it).  But most especially, the moments between her and Ennis were nothing less than electric.  There was so much said between them without words, or with her very few words, and every single moment of their contact with each other.  I just know Ennis when he left had been very moved by his meeting with her, even aside from his finding the shirts.  It would have gone totally differently if Mr. Twist hadn't been there.  And I remember even the first time seeing the movie, being really strongly touched by her saying, you come back and see us...  (Is that what she said?  "see us"?  If she did, I'm sure she didn't mean her and Mr. T.  We could say she meant her and Jack...)

I can cry thinking about this scene right now...

Okay, I guess I have no choice. :) I will write it, however it comes out in short story format or just a narrative, and put it to you all as my way of expressing my gratitude. I can't promise how soon, or how well this story will be. I am no professional, or even amateur, writer. But, knowing all of you are kind and gentle, I feel comfortable attempting it. Stay tuned...

Meanwhile, I read someone said the short story mentioned Jack's abusive childhood. I can see the old man abusing not only Jack, but also Mrs. Twist. She seemed to be constantly afraid of him, of him exploding in anger. Everything she did was trying to not cause confrontation between Ennis and him. She sent Ennis upstairs to avoid Ennis getting too upset at the old man saying Jack changed his tune. She saw how devastated he was. In a way, what the old man did, set Ennis up for the discovery of the shirt, to go from thinking Jack no longer loved him, to knowing with absolute certainty that Jack loved him for twenty years, since that last day on the mountain, and probably before their first night together. To rise from the depth of despair, to the height of being loved by someone you love, yet, forever out of reach.

It's funny, but I think I have reached phase 2 of PBS. I am running out of tears! I cry, I feel sad, but the tears no long come streaming down. Perhaps welling up a little. Last night, perhaps because I was very tired, but I didn't crying in the movie until the very end.

The scene at the end of the summer in '63, when Ennis walked away, after Jack looked into the mirror watching Ennis walked down the road, and Ennis got sick in the stomach, that always broke me down in tears. Last night, I guess the feeling of loneliness that broke Ennis no longer resonated in me as I have found this safe haven.

The scenes in Lightning Flat still got me, though.

You are so right, myprivatejack, that Mrs. Twist knew that she and Ennis are the two people who loved Jack the most. Thank you for more inspiration to my extended ending. I will be sure to add this to it somehow.

I don't think she would dare to defy the old man by sneaking Jack's ashes into the shirt. Even if she had been able to do it, she couldn't psychologically. However, once Ennis become a part of the family, she will find a way for Jack's ashes to be moved to Brokeback. Of that, I have no doubt. As you said, she loved Jack, probably as much as Ennis did.

Thanks for the insight. :^^)

Thank you,Lance, for your nice words to my post¡: :t)  I´m happy that my words can serve somehow to your inspiration.Maybe I´ll be your Muse... :8  I´m so sorry for not being able to explain myself as well as I wanted,or at least,as well as I do in Spanish or Catalan. But feelings are always difficult to express in words;you must HAVE them, not necessarily COMMENT on them...

You are #$#, myprivatejack. And your English is just fine. I would love to learn Spanish or Catalan and be inspired even more. I love listening to Spanish songs, even when I don't understand the lyrics. The passion and love come through without the words. <^(

I agree, don't give your public any headsup details. Just let us savor the thought of this story of yours a little longer.... At least until you get it wrote! Your public awaits.

Okay, Okay, Okay!!!

Not another word from me until I get this online.

I mean about the story.

It'd be cruel and unusual punishment to keep me from the forum. :^^)
