now this might sound dumb, but I have to ask...did anyone else notice Lureen's teeth when she was on the phone at the end with Ennis? Her front teeth had what looked like brown stain on the edges... does anyone one know what this detail might have been for? If this this was planned, then I am amazed at the detailed that went into this scene....

A friend of mine who went with me this evening to see the movie noticed this. He said it was from smoking. She was a smoker and this was one of the details with the aging process for the movie. They're nicotine stains.
-
Well it's part of her character...hair colour, nails and bad teeth...due to smoking I guess!
-
Well, being a smoker, and having a parent who has smoked most of her life, I would concur that those nasty stains are indeed from smoking. It seemed like all they did in this movie is smoke (ok not ALL they did) and Lureen's character always seemed to be under an immense amount of pressure, which meant she probably chain smoked.

did anyone notice it was like they took two clown balloons and made her boobs from them in last phone scene. when she took her bra off with jack in the car her boobs were smallish perky--but in that phone scene it looked like she had grown to a huge saggy size.

I think it was just a way of emphasizing Lureen's character, especially as she got older. The teeth could be coffee-stained, too, in addition to the smoking. I also think Anne's performance has been under-praised. I thought she did a great job with what she had to do.

THANK YOU for starting this thread. I didn't know how to bring it up! So thank you!
YES YES YES, her teeth were stained at the end. It just screams out at me each time I see it. I've even googled all kinds of things to try to see if anyone else has mentioned it, and I couldn't find anything. Such a PERFECT detail in the movie. I love the attention to detail in this movie, and that's a great example.

whew, ok... i thought it was me..hah. I noticed it the first time. Yea, I was impressed with the details liket his...

lureen's breasts were HUGE, both in the car scene and in the phone scene at the end :-)
her teeth were tobacco and coffee-stained.
lastly, there were stray red nail polish marks on her finger, which no one really can explain.
most graphic explanation would be that "she had blood on her hands (jack's)"
-
"Blood on her hands" is an angle I hadn't thought of... Interesting... ::)

I have read somewhere fairly recently an article that cites Lureen's bad teeth in context to something else. I can't remember the article now. :(

context to something else... what?
-
I noticed it too, and smoking would be the natural reason. I also noticed the specks of red nail polish on Lureen's fingernails. I hadn't thought of blood, though....you are all right, the attention to detail and effects for deeper meaning are incredible in this film.

Damnit Jack, you shoulda stayed way from that red hat wearing cowgirl. Her sitting there hanging up on Ennis with tobacco stained teeth and those chipped nails, being cold hearted. Jack deserved better! Jack deserved Ennis. Damn I'd like to knock some sense into that boy.
