Topic: Jack Teasing Ennis

Since watching this film and certain scenes over and over again.I found at the beginning that Jack was teasing Ennis like when Jack is standing in front of his black truck looking at Ennis walks forward then turns back and leans on his truck.Also when Jack is on the horse when there going to for the sheep and he has the horse going around in a circle like in the rodeo and Ennis gives him a strange look.I am not sure though.I like to tease my lover to and she enjoys it,sometimes to much but enjoys it anway.Just sort of wondering,maybe I am wrong but it sure looks like it.

For me it was teasing but also seducing, Jack saw immediately the shyness of Ennis, so instead of talking he leans on his truck and stares at him, trying to catch his attention. I don't know if it's teasing, but I really have the feeling that the shyness of Ennis attracted Jack right away, rightly because Jack is the opposite. And as for the strange look that he gave, for me it's the same thing, he wants the attention and maybe the admiration of Ennis! There's an interesting post of Manhatangirl concerning their behavior the first time they met in Aguirre office : 'In the beginning of the film when both were waiting for Aguirre, without words, I've always wonder why Ennis had that reaction to Jack the first time he sees him. He's timidly look away, shuffling his feet, his hands in his pockets. These two men, were there for a job, only standing out there, most men would speak, may even shake hands, introduce themselves, begin a conversation. Jack sensing Ennis shyness, step away, this moment might have spark some attraction in Jack some way...  Jack was going to have Ennis, the question was when, Ennis felt something, but not sure what, but in his actions on Brokeback it was to please this man'

I agree with you on that maybe it was not teasing as I thought when I was watching them at first.Seducing that makes a lot more sense when I think about it and watch them now.You could see Jack was attracted to Ennis at that point.Did you notice also when Jack was shaving when he looked in the truck mirror.Many men use shaving for teasing also if someone looks at them

I don't think much "teasing" is going on in that early scene when Jack is mounted and his horse keeps going in circles. Maybe he is trying to display his horsemanship to Ennis but somehow I doubt this. The script reads "Jack's on a horse - crowhops." I know almost nothing about horses and horse riding so don't know what "crowhops" implies. Any horse-riding member of this board able to help us out? To me it suggests that Jack hasn't got full control of the horse yet.

Either way, all it elicits from Ennis is a warning to Jack: " that horse looks like it's got a low startle point". However, it's a warning Jack blithely ignores, saying "I doubt there's a filly can throw me." Alas, we learn that this is an empty boast on Jack's part as the filly does later manage to throw him, flattening Jack's harmonica in the process. 

The contrast first established  here and later developed - think of the scene where once more Jack's horse is "crowhopping" before Jack is able to bring it under control and set off for the pup tent above - is between Jack's limited ability with horses and Ennis's quiet professionalism. No horse "crowhops" when Ennis mounts it. Whether leading the mule pack up Brokeback or riding flat out across the upper pasture it almost seems that Ennis and his horse are one. For me, it's always a pleasure to behold.

I have ridden horses and owned them also but never heard this term myself.My sister and brother has owned horses to,they might know this term.

When you were saying Jack is saying theres a filly that can't throw him.I wonder if that goes for Ennis also in a certain way.That Jack can't throw Ennis either.Just a thought when I read this.
