manila_rocks, There definitely *aren't* palm trees in Canada, where the film was shot. I also am not aware of any US/Canadian beliefs about visions caused by ingesting particular natural substances, except for the fact that certain Native American and ancient Mexican peoples sought out visions by chewing peyote (a cactus whose leaves contain the hallucinogen mescaline), fasting, and walking alone in the desert. But I doubt that these are activities that Ennis and Jack would have participated in.
However, we certainly do see them ingesting other mind-altering substances--whiskey, and later marijuana. The idea of their having visions during intimate contact is an intriguing one . . . .
