4th Tent Scene - *Spoiler*
« on: Feb 13, 2006, 11:15 PM »
BBM has four tent scenes where Ennis and Jack spent times together.

The first and second tent scenes have been discussed extensively in the forum. There are third and fourth

#3 - When Ennis and Jack were sleeping in the tent during the snow storm
#4 - The night before their farewell.

Did anyone notice that Ennis was actually holding Jack while sleeping? I thought it was another subtlety of showing Ennis affection on Jack.

By #3 do you mean the hail storm scene?  I'm pretty sure Ennis is by himself during the snow scene--he's in the pup tent.  Then he rides down and finds Jack breaking camp.

The scene in the tent their last night together is very sweet.

Number 3 -

I thought Ennis and Jack were in the tent together? Another good reason to see it again for the 7th time.

Before I leave,

This was the hail storm scene.  They were together, Ennis wanted to go back to the sheeps.  Storm was so bad, Jack kept Ennis in the tent.  They zipped the tent shut... What did happen after  ???

Right, ethan.  Note too that Ennis holds Jack from the back, just as in the flash back scene  -- because it's too much for him to hold Jack face to face, as Annie P explains it.  Geez.

And ethan, how could one not notice this powerful detail ?? ;D

OK. #3 is not the hail storm.

There should be 5 tent scenes then.

#1 & 2 we knew plus hail storm (#3)

#4 is when Ennis woke up in the tent almost buried in the snow. He went out and jumped around in a blanket.

#5 - last tent scene before their farewell.

For #4 - was Jack in the tent sleeping as well? I have tried to confirm this but have not been able to.

I'm pretty sure Ennis is by himself during the snow scene--he's in the pup tent.  Then he rides down and finds Jack breaking camp.

I thought Jack breaking camp happened much later after the snow melted. Is this not right?

No it was later that day that Ennis woke up in the snow. Aguirre just found his excuse to bring them down is my guess...

Ennis wakes up, we see his face, then the camera pulls back and we see the pup tent surrounded by snow.  Ennis stumbles out and staggers around in the snow.  Then it cuts to that shot of the snow melting into a stream, then we see Jack knocking the tent down as Ennis rides into the main camp.  Remember it now?   ;)

And you're right, there's 5 tent scenes, but Jack isn't in the pup tent in the snow scene.

One thing just came to my mind. The shirt Ennis wears in their last tent scene. It has "patterns" on it. Definitely not Ennis's regular (work) shirt. I believe Ennis wears his best shirt to meet Jack.

What about the tent scene where Ennis has wood in his hand... carving that horse in the rain... was that part of any of the previous scenes?

Thanks for the clarification, camom. Now it makes sense. I was hoping Jack was there with Ennis.  :(

I agree that the two other later tent scenes are important, but because the first two were so amazingly powerful that they have lingered longer in our minds (and hearts!).

3rd tent scene - the snow storm tent scene - too short in my view, although it was obviously indicated that this meant Jack and Ennis would be spending the night together in the tent.  Wanted Jack to say something playful to Ennis like "we'll have to think of a way to keep warm" (or something similar. Any other suggestions?).

4th tent scene - last night together - I LOVE this scene.  The first time I saw the film, that scene really affected me, because it was so beautiful and tender, and once the film ended, I realised how painful and poignant it was because it was the last time they spent close to each other.   :'( :'(

You"re right.  I noticed it ,too. Much flashier than his normal shirts.

Did you notice this when Ennis packs for their first impromptu fishing trip?  Ennis smells his shirt before he packs it.  Has to see if it is clean?  Funny!                                                                                                 -Nancy

Right, ethan.  Note too that Ennis holds Jack from the back, just as in the flash back scene  -- because it's too much for him to hold Jack face to face, as Annie P explains it.  Geez.

I don't think so in this case Jason.  They were sleeping stomach to back because they were spooning.

If they slept back to back one would think they were mad at each other.

It isn't comfortable sleeping face to face either. Hardly any of your bodies touch and you are breathing hot air in each other's faces all night.

As for Annie's explanation of why Ennis held Jack from the rear; that is the only part of her story I can not buy.  If the two boys could lay on top of each other, face to face, and kiss, and we have to assume it happened more than once, why would it be so difficult for Ennis to hug Jack from the front?  Ennis knew Jack he had a penis.  Besides, that was Ennis' normal position; rubbing himself up against Jack's backside.

When I read that part of her story I couldn't believe she was actually expecting me to believe that.

Tell you what...truth is, sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it...

Love is a force of nature.

Ditto!

Considering the descripition of THE KISS when they re-unite after 4 years, still in Annie's short story.  That same kiss Alma witnessed, Ennis initiated it, I suspect Jack was kind of surprised, look at his eyes when he is banged in the wall and being kissed by Ennis.  Look of surprise but (not sure) tears of joy als maybe?

Oh that "reunion" scene is just amazing. Jake Gyllenhaal manages to convey such a complex array of emotions in an instant.
There's joy, passion, but for me it was mainly utter relief that Ennis also felt the same way he did.  Their kiss is strong but slightly apprehensive at first.  Momentarily Jack stops (I think) then looks into Ennis eyes. Then he really goes for it because he can feel Ennis' passion too.

Yeh, I love how Ennis tarts himself up when he's meeting Jack. Notice when he's waiting for Jack to arrive after their first 4 year absence..he's sitting there all ironed up, best shirt (and boots probably), hair all neat and tidy.  This is stating the obvious but I do believe Ennis knows he's got one hunk of a special guy in Jake Twist.
I wish I knew how to quit you
