I doubt it.

I always think the marriage has been arranged by Alma and Monroe in the way that some parents take over weddings and turn them into what they want them to be. Alma Jr's visit to Ennis seems like an attempt to take her wedding back and include her father, who has done his best to be there for the two girls since the divorce. Whether Ennis would want to walk his daughter down the aisle and whether Alma would go along with it I don't know - i always feel that after the Thanksgiving fight she edited Ennis out of their lives.

Yes, I think Alma edited Ennis out of their lives also. However, this is Alma Jr's wedding. It is what she wants that goes. If she wanted her father to walk her down the isle would Alma and Monroe then say they were not paying for the wedding?

I am going to side with you greenfrog. Ennis, after all, always paid his child support as society expected him to do.

I honestly don't know.  I don't think Alma Jr. would be capable of this, but I suspect that Alma could very well make this happen...

All this calls to mind the reasons I didn;t have a wedding - family members who disliked each other, business friends of my father who had to be asked, all that. I just opted out and had no-one except my parents, god-mother and my mother-in-law to be. Much easier. Alma Jr should have done the same.

But then of course the movie couldn't have had that scene, and that's the point of the whole thing - it's not really meant to be logical in the terms in which we're analyzing it. that said, Alma Jr's cataloguing of who's doing what make sit all sound a fait accompli and leaves Ennis with little option but to say yes to everything or no and look bad.

You may have a point here.  It seems that Ennis has already been left out of most of the planning.  And would Alma Jr. been silent about this crucial detail?  Perhaps she would have thought it obvious that it was Ennis's role to give her away -- but given the circumstances, I would see reason for Alma Jr. NOT to have assumed this.  Since she said nothing explicit, then it could mean that it was a fait accompli...

Or rather than make waves at home - we don't know what her relationship with Monroe was like - perhaps  she let them go ahead then did her own thing by approaching Ennis. she evidently wanted Ennis there - she made quite an effort to ensure that he was.

Incidentally Kurt doesn't seem to be getting much of a look-in.

I don't think Monroe and even Alma would have stood in the way of having Ennis attend if Alma Jr. wanted him there.  There was very little they could do to Alma Jr. at that point.  She was about to have her own life with her husbadn-to-be.

Did Kurt know anything about Ennis?  Hard to say...

I for one just can't see Alma Jnr taking anybody other than Ennis down the aisle with her.

My feelings about this remain mixed.  I would like to think that Ennis gave Alma away, but I can't also escape thinking that Ennis was shut out of the wedding plans...

I reckon when Ennis arrived at the wedding, he'd have been on the edge of things - marginalized, to use a word I dislike. Clearly the plans had been made with no reference to him; even at his own daughter's wedding Ennis was going to be on the oputside looking in, as it were, and as he often is in the story.
