I'm gonna agree with hidesert. They can only really eat canned items. I'm thinking that out there with coyotes and stuff, even boxed items would be few and far between. I saw their tripod to hold the food up, but that couldn't have been able to hold much. When I go camping, it's all beans and stew. Then the money comes in. A cheap can of stew is about $2 and a cheap can of beans is about $.50. Which of the two do you thing Aguirre is gonna want to pay for?

P.S.- Beans come in anything but tomato sauce?  :o I'm assuming that BetterMost beans are pork and beans, though.

After reading your post, it makes me wonder - why did they have to eat beans? No other options to pack for them? Perhaps someone can enlighten me on this.

Or is it another metaphor of this movie? 

If it's a metaphor, I haven't figured it out yet. 

There was no refrigeration in camp, so that reduced the number of food items.  Basically it had to either be in a can or a box.  Beans are a cheap source of protein and these guys were working hard and needed a lot of protein every day.  The only other alternative was to shoot some game which they did.  I agree with Cherry Cake that Aguirre probably wanted to keep the costs down so there were likely few items available.  It was just a summer job.

Yeah... beans were the most logical food all around: cheap, easy to pack and cook, good source of energy. Too bad poor Jack got tired of them so quickly. haha. Yummy... beans in a tomato sauce.. That's a 5 star meal right there. haha.

beans are cheap and nutritious, so it is a good choice to keep down cost when keeping the boys from starving (I was thinking if they eat soups everyday that shouldn't be engouh for two young adults )
by the way, the label should be easy to make and may be some of us can make  fake can of "Bettermost Bean" in photoshop of somthing like that

Beans go with all sort of things, I guess, though I can;t say I'd like to live on them, even with the addition of alcohol and potatoes. But you're right, they're cheap and full of protein and don't need any cooking skills.

I  made some labels by printing a pic I saw on ebay. Its not perfect but gets the message across. The message:- we're going camping on Brokeback and when in Rome,- drink a little wiskey, do a little fishin.
