Shirts question...
« on: Mar 20, 2006, 07:05 PM »
Did i imagine it or was the order of the shirts in Ennis' closet reversed from the way they were in jakes.

The viewing i saw was not a great copy (bootleg here in Nayarit Mexico). So maybe my imgination filled in some dots.

It appeared to me however like Ennis shirt was "held by Jake's Shirt" when at the parents home, but when he took it back for the closing scene that Jack's shirt was "held by Ennis shirt" -- meaning inside the other which i viewed as terribly meaningful.

Anyone notice this?

Thanks

Jeff

yes Jack's shirt covering Ennis' in Jack's room Ennis' shirt covering Jack's.

Heart breaking scene, speaks/shouts heart breaking emotions.

The actual shirts were auctioned off recently on ebay and got over ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS  proceeds going to a childrens charity.

Nope, you saw correctly.  Jack had his shirt hugging Ennis's when the shirts were at his parent's house and Ennis reversed them when the shirts were at his home. His shirt was hugging Jacks.  It was, in my opinion, VERY meaningful and VERY emotional to see. Just one of the many things in this movie that brings me to tears.

I read or heard somewhere that Ang Lee said that reveresing the shirts was Heath's idea.

In an interview I read somewhere in this forum, Dianna Osanna said that it was Heath's idea to reverse the shirts in his trailer.  Isn't that amazing?  Heath cared so much about the part he was playing, he put so much thought and work into it.  It shows you how much he cares about being the best he can be when he's playing a part.  Who would have thought to do what he did with the shirts?  It makes you see how much he understands Ennis and Jack, too.  Like Annie said...Heath understood Ennis better than she did!  Incredible...he should have gotten the OSCAR.
This is the forest primeval.  The murmuring pines and the hemlocks, bearded with moss, and in garments green, indistinct in the twilight...but where are the hearts that beneath it leaped...
