Jack and Randall... What do you think

I am curious.  I wonder what people think about Jack and Randall?  Did Jack leave Ennis for Randal?  If he did Why?  What do you think of Jack for leaving Ennis?

Surely this post is in the wrong part of the board?  :-\

But to answer your question, I don't think Jack did leave Ennis for Randall. To be honest, I don't think Jack ever did leave Ennis. I mean, he did to an extent, but his love was always truly for Ennis. I'm not sure lol. I'll come back to it! Lauren x

Based on those comments from Jack's dad, it's possible Jack started thinking of a future with Randall.  Jack may have started losing hope of a future with Ennis.  I don't believe there was any official ending with he and Ennis, otherwise Ennis would have not sent the usual postcard.

I don't think he really left Ennis for Randall. Maybe he decided that he had more of a future with Randall, but I think he would have kept seeing Ennis. He truly loved Ennis, and even if he did decide to be with a man who would live with him and be open with him, he still would have been in love with Ennis. I think if Randall had left his wife and gone off with Jack, he would have eventually left him, when he realized that Jack was in love with Ennis.

Anyway, I don't think that Randall would have gone off to live with Jack either. Jack was looking for something that he probably wouldn't have found with any man at the time.

I also believe if Jack and Randall moved in together it would be short lived.  Jack's love for Ennis was so strong its presence would have prevented these two from becoming a truly connected couple.

I have posted on this in a couple of different ways but here is my take...Jack had reached a point where he had decided to move on.  After twenty years, and with Ennis finally saying "I can't go on like this" Jack made a practical decision (and Randall was available).  I still think though that Ennis was a part of Jacks soul and that if the opportunity presented itself Jack would have been back with Ennis in a heartbeat.

I have waited a long time for someone to mention what Ennis said to Jack at the end but I haven't seen it.  Maybe missed it.

At the reunion scene camp out Ennis says, "If you can't fix it, Jack. . .you gotta stand it." Jack asks, "For how long?"  Ennis replies, "As long as we can ride it.  Ain't no reins on this one."

But then at the end at the last camp out Ennis says, "I can't stand this any more Jack."  Almost as if it were a plea for Jack to do something.  I couldn't figure out what Ennis meant.  Can't stand what?  Can't stand their fighting any more.  This was the second fight they had.  Can't  go on living alone?  Can't go on fearing people suspect he is having an affair with a man?  What was it Ennis couldn't stand any more?  I still have no idea and I have watched the movie over 80 times now.

But, what told me it was the end of their relationship, even before we saw Jack watching Ennis drive away, was the "I can't stand this any more."  It couldn't be fixed, I stood it as long as I could and I can't stand it any more.  Jack realized that, and in my opinion, when he was watching Ennis drive away he thought back to the single most precious and meaningful moment in their relationship.
Annie says in the story, "Later, that dozy embrace solidified in his memory as the single moment of artless, charmed happiness in their separate and difficult lives." . . . "And maybe, he thought, they'd never got much further than that."  Jack knew it could never be any more than that moment and decided for Ennis's and his sake, it had to end.  If you love someone and they are in pain because of that love, you let them go so the pain will stop.
In my opinion.

Where true love is involved that is so much easier said then done. I honestly doubt either Jack or Ennis could have left each other in any way other then the way it happened. One of them had to die and one of them had to live with the result. That is the essence of the story.
There was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe, but nothing could be done about it, and if you can't fix it you've got to stand it.

Ennis, riding against the wind back to the sheep in the treacherous, drunken darken light, thought he'd never had such a good time, felt he could paw the white out of the moon.

I think all Randall was to Jack was sex.  Jack obviously needed it a lot more than Ennis did.  But after 20 years of putting up with what Ennis and Jack did, they were halves of each other and once Alma Jr. got married and settled, and Jenny was taken care of, even if Randall was bunking at the Twist ranch with Jack, and Ennis having appeared on the scene,  Jack would have sent Randall packing in a heartbeat.

why you think that BBBOY, personally i don't think that Jack was meant to die it just happened but i don't think that is fair to say that the other had to live with the results that is not correct to my point of view. Because if love is a force of nature then sooner or later they would have being together that is the sense of the story it goes beyond gender and unites two souls as one. And when two souls are joined no matter how much the life tries to change it they are like the water they find the way to go throught.

About Jack and Randall, well i need to admit it was just sex after seeing the dvd i had to admit Jack was more urged to get laid than Ennis, and Randall was just the replacement for a while but. in case Jack didn't have died i think he would probably had tried to start a relationship with randall probably tried to ignore Ennis postcards but sooner or later that part of him that was still with Ennis would have cried loud making him to return to him. it is said that if you love someone let it go and he will return back. well if you check jack  did that he let Ennis go on the last trip and he came back to him sadly late but he came back and Jack returned always back to Ennis because it was where his soul was otherwise why he wanted to be at brokeback? answer because it was where Ennis and him souls were merged as one for the rest of the Eternity.
There was some open space between what he knew and what he tried to believe, but nothing could be done about it, and if you can't fix it you've got to stand it.

Patriot, Your post made me cry! I never thought of it like that- Ennis pleading with Jack.  Ennis saying "I can't stand this anymore" meant, to me, that he can't stand only getting to be his true self and experiencing that happiness only a few times a year. That the goodbyes get harder. The night before Jack says "Truth is sometimes I miss you so much I can hardly stand it." Maybe that is what Ennis can't stand? Missing Jack so much? Ennis says that after Jack lets loose on him reminding him of how they could have a had a good life together but Ennis didn't want it. And Jack saying "you have no idea how bad it gets". Maybe Ennis can't stand denying Jack that "sweet life" anymore. Perhaps the guilt of denying Jack all of those years because of his own fears and then Jack finally throwing it in his face is what he can't stand.

I do agree with BBBOY that only death would have parted them. Maybe that is the romantic in me. As much as I would like to believe that Jack would be noble enough to set Ennis free, I think their love was too strong for them to part voluntarily.
