Mg, thank you for sharing your personal journey and am happy for you that you have found your peace. Sounds like you've been there so please help me understand . First of all , did Ennis love Jack? I mean really love him? Or was Ennis pretending or *going along * with something that felt good? Did Jack have to wait 20 years to find out that Ennis was just getting a free ride as far as Jack was concerned? This has crossed my mind and it's so unfair to Jack to be "kept on hold" all those years, If Ennis "did'nt want, and " never even wanted it"  what Jack was offering him , would'nt he owe Jack the common courtesy to just say it. If Ennis could not bring himself to accept his homosexual inclinations should'nt he have not encouraged the relationship by agreeing to meet him up in the mountains, away from  the society he so feared? Jack was following Ennis's rules , where is the justice for Jack in this? OK, Jack was making these choices conciously because he loved Ennis, Ennis had to know this. It was serious for Jack. He wanted and needed Ennis to complete the committment by showing him something solid, permanant, and complete. Just like the morning after FNIT up in the meadow Jack said "me neither" he was saying it in the short term to try to head off spooking Ennis but he had hope for the future that Ennis would see what he saw. SNIT, confirmed Jack's hopes . Always looking out for Ennis's low startle point. Again I ask , if Ennis really felt this way then where is Jack's justice. I gotta leave now I'll be back on later today. See ya.

Wasn't this the underlining problem with them? This "this thing" was always between them,  Ennis unable to accept  "this thing" . . .
My love for this film goes so deep,  it's scary sometimes.   I'm way off topic guys, sorry.

MG: Your tale is very heartfelt and inspiring, thank you for sharing it. I think this is a lot of the reason we're all "here" at this forum one way or another. We're Ennis, we're Jack, or we're some combo of the two. It may be off this topic, but I think it goes straight to the point of the big topic of why there are still men and women feeling, talking, and writing about this film 18 months after it was released.

I think your absolutely right, it is "this thing" called love and how it touches us all. Sometimes in ways we want, sometimes in ways we don't want. To me it is what makes Ennis such a study, he HAS been touched, but he doesn't understand how or why, his history prevents him accepting it, yet he is powerless to stop it. Like a moth drawn to firelight, a "force of nature" that he is unable to control. He sees it as his death, and too late realizes it is actually his life. IMHO

This quote puts Ennis in the "victim mentality * mode. When he refers to himself "I" it comes off as if he has been victimized by Jack. Puts himself in the sympathetic position every time.  It becomes clear when I hear his character saying: "I can lick this"- "I could"-, "I am like this" -, " I come runnin like a dog" -, I don't understand it" ( this may be true, but who does? it's called love) -, " I never wanted it" -, " I don't want it" , I'm like this , "I'm nowhere"  , " I'm nuthin" Well I guess  it's all about Ennis. in this quote cuz what's left after that? "  I hear : You" (Jack) are to blame for my circumstances. " You are responsible for my conflicts". My  situation is all your fault. " I'ts you Jack" Was it? Did he find love? or did he fall unconsious for 20 years?   Ennis fights a battle he cannot win, just does'nt know it and does'nt know how to, but it was right there all along imo ,Jack IS his other half. To hate his homosexuality is to hate Jack . His lover embraces his  sexuality so he could not do that either.  Could'nt live with Jack the way Jack wanted and could'nt live without him either.  Not Good.  He tasks me, but I can't help but love em though. He's such a delicious challenge!

Good observation, aintfoolin.  Ennis was too caught up in his own conflict to see that his actions were also causing a lot of hurt in very different quarters.

Well, I guess he may have known, but felt powerless to do otherwise.  His own inner conflict consumed him, and like a flame, it consumed all those who came in contact with him.

Perhaps Ennis felt short-changed in life in the sense that he could not master himself, no matter how hard he struggled.  He may have thought: why him?

Ainfoolin,

I agree with some of what you've said.   I'm sure as heck no expert in no way shape or form, about how the human mind works, all I can do go by my own life experience, like we all do.

I do have a little problem with the "victim mentality"  I 'm not too sure about that.   IMO, yes I do think Ennis truly was in love with Jack, I have no doubt about his love.   But Ennis was caught between what he was taught to believe and who he was.    Jack was his sanity, his real life, this was scary, this is not how he thought it was to be,  so naturally he would blame Jack, accuse him of making him what he already was, "You made me this way," no Jack didn't make him that way, he was already "that way"  he push it down so far in himself, and he brought it forth willingly in Jack's arms.   The most painful thing Ennis said  in the passage that was left out, "you scratch a few words on a post card and I come running like a dog", I read that and cried, and really cried.  Because you know Ennis lived for those words from Jack,  like him saying to Ennis, "I'm coming for you".

Ennis was already emotionally messed up when he met Jack, but Ennis fell in love, and threw his existence into turmoil,  he was fighting his true-self with the memory of what his father left him.  He punished himself for his feelings, because well daddy,  showed him, taught him, "boys like you" will get the tire iron, he gave his father so much power, he even believe daddy might have had a part in Earl's murder.   If you think your father can kill a man, who was "queer", what do you think he'd do to you.

Jack was perceptive, when Ennis was telling him that story of Rich and Earl, Jack asked, "and you seen this?"  he touched his face, he knew than that this man he fell in love with was in trouble and damaged, Ennis was nine years old again.

Jack wanted Ennis to come to terms with himself, with their love.  Why he stayed so long with Ennis, Jack was in love with Ennis.   And like many of us if you believe you love some long enough,  strong enough, and stay with them it will be ok, but in the end, Jack didn't live long enough to see it.   Ennis was carrying wounds long before Jack, I think Jack just tried his best to heal them with his love.

my very little 2cents.

I do have a problem with it, but in the sense that I believe Ennis deep down didn't believe it either.  You are right to say that he was already that way, and that was really his true enemy, no?

I think he lashed out at Jack in the last meeting out of frustration -- frustration partly with himself, most certainly.  The feeling of being short-changed equates nicely to the feeling that he could have been better had he not been that way.  But in the moment of realizing that Jack recognized this and lashed out at him because of it, he felt totally defenseless: he was being assaulted by his own feelings within and Jack's anger from without.  At that point, Ennis was not himself, so to speak.

Absolutely,  he didn't believe he was that way, that was his pain, but his desires betrayed him.  His inability grasp hold of his life, and progress in any way gave him  the feeling of being short changed.  Your observation of his inner conflict and Jack's anger broke him, beautiful, for indeed that what did happen.

But do you think Ennis knew what desire was but not love,  I think Ennis had no concept of love, so what he felt for Jack was really alien to him.   I couldn't  help think about the end of the film, and he ask Alma, Jr.  when she told him she going to marry, "Does he love you?"  that he was searching for that answer himself.  What he and Jack had was love.

The most hurtful thing is to think that you were short changed in love.

I think he had an incomplete understanding of love.  I do believe that he loved Jack in his own imperfect way, and that he came to an understanding of how deep love really is after Jack's death.  In the end, that understanding was combined with a conviction to be faithful to that love unto death.

But in Jack's eyes it's possibly the saddest,  because his last memory was of Ennis's breakdown, which brought on the memory of the "dozy embrace",  he died not understanding that Ennis really did love him in his "imperfect way".

Jack's love was unwaivering all through the years,  he kept on loving no matter what changes Ennis went through.  Sometimes Jack could be characterized as the one that led Ennis down this path.   Jack was only the light, Jack was human, and braver of the two he accepted his own humanity.

He fought his conflict not within but outwardly.  ridicule, temptation, giving in to his own needs, being fought at every turn by the one, and the life he really wanted, but still loving throughtout it all, he still loved.  Unitil dying on the road he spent most of his life on.

I look at the eyes of your avatar and I see your point.  This was at the moment when he answered "I did once...".  So many years of frustration and resignation show in those eyes...

I just read these two pages of this thread (came from the link in the Newsletter) - I hadn't noticed it before.  Excellent words posted here, and lots that makes me feel so sad.  And the very revealing bit of Ennis dialogue that was in the script but not the movie - that starts me thinking even more...

So many of these threads intertwine, when we're talking about how they were seeing each other, or who really had the power, or here, did they feel "short changed" by how things ended up in their lives, individually and together.  Odd that in those "simpler" times, and realtively "simple" people, compared to our insane lives these days where we know too much because of just the barrage of information...that they were so complicated.  Wel, that's because who they were wasn't accepted at the time.  So in a big huge sense, they were so short-changed by society at the time.  Weren't given the chance to see how they might have worked things out.

There is one aspect of this subject that I relate to, and that was brought up earlier -- about Ennis's simple life and his dead-end jobs, and Jack's relative wealth and an easier life.  This is a significant disparity that I think sometimes we tend to dismiss.  I hav a lot of ideas, but I think this is for another thread.  More later.

That you are fair or wise is vain,
Or strong, or rich, or generous;
You must have also the untaught strain
That sheds beauty on the rose.
There is a melody born of melody,
Which melts the world into a sea.
Toil could never compass it,
Art its height could never hit,
It came never out of wit,
But a music music-born
Well may Jove and Juno scorn.
Thy beauty, if it lack the fire
Which drives me mad with sweet desire,
What boots it? what the soldier's mail,
Unless he conquer and prevail?
What all the goods thy pride which lift,
If thou pine for another's gift?
Alas! that one is born in blight,
Victim of perpetual slight;—
When thou lookest in his face,
Thy heart saith, Brother! go thy ways!
None shall ask thee what thou doest,
Or care a rush for what thou knowest,
Or listen when thou repliest,
Or remember where thou liest,
Or how thy supper is sodden,—
And another is born
To make the sun forgotten.
Surely he carries a talisman
Under his tongue;
Broad are his shoulders, and strong,
And his eye is scornful,
Threatening, and young.
I hold it of little matter,
Whether your jewel be of pure water,
A rose diamond or a white,—
But whether it dazzle me with light.
I care not how you are drest,
In the coar sest, or in the best,
Nor whether your name is base or brave,
Nor tor the fashion of your behavior,—
But whether you charm me,
Bid my bread feed, and my fire warm me,
And dress up nature in your favor.
One thing is forever good,
That one thing is success,—
Dear to the Eumenides,
And to all the heavenly brood.
Who bides at home, nor looks abroad,
Carries the eagles, and masters the sword.

Didn't they lived preemptive lives, they appeased society, by living their lives, in totally different ways, Jack looked at society in the face, and try to accommodate it, taking what was offered and running with it,  only taking time out to satisfy his trueself.  Where as Ennis shunned society, living a minimal life, yet slowly sealing himself in that house he created in his own mind, shuttering the windows, sealing the door,  as if not upsetting the balance with his own true needs.

They courted society in different ways not to upset it, and ruin what they needed the most each other.

It was their idea of compromise, with full knowledge deep in their hearts that there was no such compromise.  Jack in a sense acknowledged this, but Ennis perhaps was never able to do so while Jack lived.  If there is a feeling of being short-changed, it is the feeling of having to live without something they could not live without.  That is at the heart of their despair.

Excellently well said tpe,  as always, I agree too that society short-changed them both. Unfortunatly it's still true in today's society. It is a film of valueable lessons. Never surrender  hopes and dreams to fear when love is alive  Love ALWAYS finds a way if you want it bad enough. Ennis loved Jack, Jack loved Ennis. It's all that really matters.MO

Where was society up in Brokeback?    The battle was always between them, and their perception of society without really stepping off that mountain.  Jack tried to get Ennis off that mountain, Ennis always resisted Jack.   They fought over something that was not really known to them.   They insulated and isolated themselves.

Short changing themselves without really trying to cash in on their love, trying to attempt a life together, how could they even know how it would be?   They never stop fighting with each other and gave it a chance.

Fear in one's mind of anything is the biggest roadblock to happiness.

It is very difficult to go against society at large, and not to conform always carries the risk of being ostracized.  And yet, to conform without true conviction is not just hypocrisy; it is truly short-changing oneself to what one can truly be.  It is tough to balance -- if there is indeed such a balance.  More often than not, there is no room for compromise.

While they were relatively free up on Brokeback, they did recognize the reality down below.  And reality did intrude on their idyl in the form of Aguirre.  In fact, it was Aguirre who put a stop to it.  Nonetheless, it is tru that they felt relatively free up in the mountains, and that was why their love blossomed there in the first place.

And yet, what you said is true: that the conflict was largely within themselves, and it was this inner conflict that was the primary source of their feeling short-changed, IMO.

Ennis tried to pin all the problems on Jack.  So, Jack did try to quit him.  Ennis didn't try to quit Jack, he just kept showing up and blaming Jack.  Jack tried to move on.  Ennis didn't try to move on.  He stayed stuck, never gave Jack up and ran to him..    He loved Jack and needed to tell him so.  On the other hand, Jack needed to 'force his hand..'  oh, there's another mirror.  wow.  Jack forced ennis's physical hand, but not his emotional one.  he should have told Ennis, look, are you ready to give me up, if not we've got to be together and figure out how to do that.  Ennis knew jack loved him too much to ever pull out the ultimatim card.  ennis got his way, but he short changed himself.

I do think the inability of Ennis to go to the next level is one of the principal sources of his own and Jack's misery.  Jack felt that he could not go on without Ennis with him, and with each passing year of unfulfilled hopes, Jack suffered more and more.  But the irony of it all is that Ennis also suffered more and more as time went by. His inability to move on with Jack may be seen in terms of his inability to realize that the potential to change was within him.  This is why I think sometimes that it would have been better had Jack confronted Ennis much earlier.  Perhaps  Ennis's inner inertia could have been overcome...

There's a sense in which they settled into a pattern and into their different roles till perhpas they became too established to break. Maybe if Jack had tried earlier, before their habits were so ingrained, things might have worked out better.

But Ennis never was a visionary, never really had a dream as Jack did.  Ennis working for child support would be ending, short changed or not, settle in their position or not.  If Jack hadn't died, decision would have to be made.  It wasn't ending there, not by a long shot.  Jack pressure would have been relentless, and Ennis never doing well under pressure would had to decide, or lose Jack forever.

But I wonder whether Jack would continue with the pressure...

Both had some reason to feel short-changed, but I agree that Ennis probably didn't think things as much a Jack did.  For Ennis, his feelings of being short-changed probably was more pragmatic -- associated with jobs and the hardships of day-today living as he got older.  For Jack, his feelings of being short-changed dealt more on the emotional level.    There is a huge difference in both these dimensions.
