I believe a big part of Ennis died when Jack died.
As you said there is hope- I think Ennis learned to put love and those he loves above everything else.
I don't think he could handle having to live with anymore "What ifs".

There has been discussion prebiously as to whether there is renewed hope for Ennis.  I have come to believe that Jack's death brings him to a full realization of his own love, for whcih there is nothing else in the world to live for in comparison.  But this is the crux of the problem: beyond that love, perhaps there is indeed nothing else to live for.  The glimmer of hope is his daughter, but we get the impression that Ennis is already spiritually and emotionally isolated from the world.

Indeed, he has become his own island in the sea. 

This is why I have come to believe that both of them, in a sense, died when the tire iron came down.

Ennis might have been 'till now, a solitary island in the sea, but however painful it might be for us to realize and to accept, Jack's death has  taught this remote and lonely island to tentatively let a small boat dock upon it's shore (accepting his Alma Jr's wedding invitation to marry the guy, Kurt, who (really) loves her...)  And who knows?  Maybe a 'real' ship will someday land there too...

This is really an interesting topic, Edgard, thanx for starting it. I'm not going to repeat many of the things that have already been posted here, so I'll say that I basically agree with welshwitch.

It's been a long since I last saw the movie and the DVD won't be released in Spain until 7th June, but I promise I'm going to spend all the time I need to pay attention to the thousands of details you have been commenting during these past months. Thank you for all of them
