This is like a returning to the place we were hurt at. Your friend needed only the beginning of the music ( and I can admit that I can relate to that), and I was really sobbing each time when Jack went out of Aguirre's office and with such a warm smile and encouraging voice introduced himself to Ennis, nodding and provoking Ennis to say his family name too. During that scene I had all his sad life, all his longings and wishes, love and pain in front of me, and I was dead... just like now e.g. :\'( :\'( :\'(

I'm not the only one who has said this, but our tears can easily start with the Focus Features intro, before BBM even starts!

That is so undoubtedly true. I felt a twang of sadness on the first note of the opening, and I started mewing and wiping my eyes during the first scene when Jack checks Ennis out boldly and Ennis scuffs his feet and looks down, shy but attracted. I guess it's something that takes a strong love - almost an obsession - of Brokeback Mountain to start crying before the opening is even finished, which I do a lot of.

  I think we Brokies have a higher level of profoundness in these simple things that others would think were merely accidents or space-fillers, like the subtle looks Jack sends Ennis before they even speak or the significance of Jack getting Ennis to talk about his family when the two men are on the mountain. Just MHO.

The "twang of sadness".  I love that phrase.  It captures the feeling perfectly.

I think so too.  And our choices of favorite scenes do tend to lend support to this.  Even had there been a car chase in BBM, I don't think it would land at the top of our lists.

Oh I agree  This whole movie is so awesome so it's hard to say what's scene is the best. The end is sooo sad, I cry everytime when I watch it. When Ennis says "Jack, I swear" it's so unbelievable.

Unbelievable.  Enigmatic.  And most certainly moving.

When I first saw that scene, I was sure that he meant : "Jack, I love you"... and then I found that there is a long and exhausting discussion about it... and I am not so sure. Still, in my mind that is the most simple explanation. Coz even Jack is dead :\'(, Ennis still don't have the courage to say "I love you" to him!

He already knows and accepts that it was/is love, but still, Jack seems so alive in his mind and Ennis still holds to an image of a macho strong man who can only swear something to Jack and not tell him the clear words of love. Makes sense?

It certainly makes sense but I would say my interpretation of Ennis not saying "I love you, Jack" is different. That is something I think over and over. I see Jack not as macho but as grown up "little Jack".  Lonely, scared and not feeling any love or care.
His only "fault" was that he couldn't leave his past behind on time.
In his way he said "I love you, Jack" so many times... sending up a prayer of thanks, showing his weakness (first snow, final confrontation) and revealing his gentleness and hungry for tender love (SNIT, DE).

I believe that Lureen WAS sad about Jack's death, but she was not the person who would express her feelings openly. Even so, she almost cried when she found out that Brokeback mountain is a real place and that Jack loved that place the most in the world. Yet so, that place had nothing to do with her, but with a man whom Jack had been together so many many years ago. It was not easy to her at all!
There's the whole thread about it. If I find it I'll PM you.

As for Jack's death, there's also a thread about it.
But only in few words - in SS there's a sentence " Ennis didn't know for the accident for months"... Was it really the accident or Jack was brutally murdered, it is not 100% clear. I personally don't care as for me it is the same if he died of a so stupid accident or of human hatred - the outcome is the most important for me - my Jack died! That hurts a lot!  :\'( There's no good and justified reason for a 39 year old to die! Especially when it comes to Jack Twist - so full of life and love... :\'(

When I watched BBM first time, Jack's death was a huge shock and I was like "What the heck" cos I didn't know, why and how he died. It's so unfair that he died, like you said, he was so full of life and love.  :\'(
But of course Lureen (is she Loreen or Lureen? I don't remember ) was sad, Jack was after all her husband. Maybe she had cried previously, I don't know. 

Anyway, it was so unfair (like I said earlier) that Jack died.  It doesn't matter how, he just died.

it is Lureen.
During her phone talk with Ennis, her eyes were full of eyes, when Ennis (for the first time in his life - openly) said that he and Jack used to tend sheep on Brokeback mountain. Than she realized and (as Baby Tammy said) she was probably sad coz she didn't believe Jack when he was talking about Brokeback as his favorite place thinking that he was just inventing things. Suddenly she realized that Brokeback is a real place where he was the happiest in his life with someone (not her, but a man - Ennis) and that really shattered her. She almost hang up on Ennis, but not that she hated him - she was just sad and devastated. I felt for her there. But the most of all, I was sorry for Jack!  :\'(

Too many enigmatic scenes and quotes in BBM.  But I agree with you here. It is enigmatic, coz "I swear"can mean a dozen different things in Ennis's mind.

Holyfool, you're talking about a part of FC (final confrontation). It is classic and we know that it's true, as Jack was suffering all his life coz Ennis didn't want to give in and to be with him. Sure, he felt that "quitting" Ennis would be the best thing to do, but he wasn't capable of doing that. Powerful scene indeed!

             - another part that i dig is when twist is in the back of his girl friend's car and he said some thing like " for sure you're fast" or "you don't have breaks" to
               his girl friend while she was removing her clothing on top of him. i wish to remember what exactly he said,  but the whole back seat scene was pretty funny
               especially the look in the guy's eyes: all happy!.

My understanding is that "I wish I knew how to quit you" meant "I wish I knew how to stop love you" :\'( coming not from Jack's heart but from his loneliness and helplessness. Painfully said, painfully received.

Yes, that's true! He wanted a way out from his pain, but his heart locked him to Ennis and he just couldn't let go! He loved Ennis too much.

It was sad - for both of them, but somehow Jack's pain hurts me more. :\'(

I always thought how perfectly AP led us to the ultimate sorrow of losing Jack. Coz many things were shared in the FC, many wounds were open, and we were hoping for some kind of result the next time they met, but they never met again! :\'(

I believe that all the FC, not only Jack's words were a kind of preparation for the final stroke.

For me it was too sad to be the favorite, but it is one of the significant turning points in the movie - in fact the one which is resolving the difficult situation they were into the saddest possible outcome.  :\'(

That line is probably the most famous line in the movie, correct?  Whether or not this painful scene can be described as a "favorite", there is no denying that it is one of the most memorable in the entire movie.
