Why the tent scene at that very moment?
« on: Feb 02, 2006, 02:45 AM »
I would like to speak about this particular scene. I knew that there was sex in Brokeback mountain but I didn't expect it to be so sudden. Moreover I didn't expect it to occur at that very moment, about only 30 minutes after the beginning of the movie. I love this choice  and I like the fact that there is violencein it, but it's not that obvious. How do u explain that??

My guess is that Jack and Ennis didn't expect it to be so sudden either.

I second.  It could not happened any other way.  To have slowed down would have been to cast doubts and hesitations in their minds.

Agree, they were also drunk, very drunk.  This lower inhibitions.

That's the way Annie Proulx wanted it.

I guess the quicker it happened , the less they could deny it!

I really thank you for your answer, you may be right. Ennis and Jack let their instinct control them at that moment, there is no place for reflection. They're almost out of control... But Ennis hesitates a bit before acting, doesn't he?

Yes hesitates saying "what are you doing" if I remember well. Also there is a very special second, when they get up they could turn out to fight (the only physical relations with others men they had before). Choice between two opposits instincts, the love one winning when they hold each other's head.

Though the tent scene appeared about 30 minutes into the film, you need to remember that Jack and Ennis had already been working together several weeks which was enough time to develop thier attraction to each other.

I know but what I mean is that we hardly realize that they [had already been working together several weeks] because there is no real progression in their behaviour before the tent scene. Ang Lee doesn't really point out this attraction before sex occurs.

First I saw the movie I had the some feeling, Ang should have use more time to build up their relationship. After second time viewing the movie. I changed my mind. I believe Ang doesnot want the viewer be confused about their relationship. the Chemistry between them was instinct love not friendship.

I think the first tent scene was to portray a more animalistic lust for each other, whereas the 2nd tent scene shows that the attraction may be more than just lust alone.

The first and second tents contrast each other. If the first scene was based on their attraction and friendship, there would not have the 2nd tent scene. And probably the 2nd tent scene would not have turned to be very romantic.

It is a realistic portrayal.

Ang Lee:
"The first time that Ennis and Jack kind of get together in the tent -- for me I wanted it to be a fight, I wanted it to be a battle,
I pretty much wanted Ennis to be on the verge of just beating Jack up, pretty much the whole time I wanted his fist to be in the air,
because violence was pretty much the only form of expression Ennis had allowed himself, the only way he knew how to express himself.
And so the first time that Jack and Ennis confront each other in that sense I wanted it to be somewhat explosive,
when instincts and passions come into play. I wanted (those passions) to kind of blind him and (for) it to be kind of quick, over and done."

I like very very much that scene...I think it's perfect  :)
