Patriot1 - I was actually thinking about this yesterday when I was reading the story and screenplay again. I feel that the sorrow in Ennis's voice at this point is because he's realised just how much he loves Jack - yes, he was in love when they left Brokeback, as the gut cramps scene showed, but in the intervening 4 years he's learned to live with it, assuming that he'd never see Jack again ("Didn't think I'd hear from you again - figured you was sore about that punch") But then Jack contacts him, they have their reunion kiss, they've probably (as someone said earlier) just had earth-shattering sex and then they're lying in each others arms as lovers do, with Jack whispering lots of romantic lines to him - and he feels hopeless because he wants so badly to feel this all the time but he knows that it's just not possible.
Seems to me that it's the only time that Ennis lets his guard down and voices real regret that a life with Jack isn't possible - until it's too late, anyway.
I think your spin on this 100% right on. I was watching the scene the other night and felt so deeply the despair Heath was trying to convey. Like almost every scene in the movie it is vital to the whole story.
