Not all women either - I didn't, because I don't do babies. Hated this scene as far as the implications wer concerned, the awful LD taking over and doing that "He's just like me" stuff and Jack getting shut out by the Newsome clan. I think this is where he starts thinking about Ennis again - yes, before you shout, i know there's no reason to think so, but it seems to me just the point at which it becomes evident that they're never going to accept him.

Jack looked so sad, lonely and lost at the end of that scene  :\'(
[they were] both high school dropout country boys with no prospects, brought up to hard work and privation, both rough-mannered, rough-spoken, inured to the stoic life.

I never liked how Jack's mother put the shirts in a paper bag for Ennis - it was like she was expecting him to take something down from the room that needed wrapped.  In the SS it is never mentioned, I had always supposed that Ennis had hidden them himself to get them out of the house.  I wonder if this scene was put in to show that Jack's mother was a lot more sympathetic to Ennis?   (Sorry if this has been discussed before!)

I totally agree. We know that it was about 8 months(give or take a few) after this that Jack meets up with Ennis again. The feeling that he is left out of the Newsome family was certainly a catalyst for him seeking out Ennis. I think he had to be thinking about Ennis prior to this but maybe he was trying to forget or not contact him. This scene with the baby was maybe a wake up call. "These people don't need or want me here" kind of thing so he decides to look up the one person who did need and want him, Ennis

WyMe,That is exactly what she was expecting. She wanted Ennis to find the shirts.Watch the little push on his shoulder prior to Ennis going up to Jack's room.

I don't believe this is where he starts to think about Ennis again Welshwitch. When he was dancing with Lureen before the marriage you could tell by the look on his face and the words to the music he was thinking of Ennis then.  However, I would agree with you if you had said the bedroom scene was when he started thinking about contacting Ennis again. It was very clear that "the family" did not include Jack and that L.D. was the head of Jack's household.

Hate to do this to you WyMe, but you will have to watch the movie over again. The bag wasn't just waiting there, it was there with other bags. That is where she kept them. Just like my mom when I was little, the bags were kept between the wall and the breadbox. They were easy to grab when you needed one like she did. They were easy to grab when you needed one to put into the trash can.

Sorry to make you watch the movie again. I know how you really hate doing that.  :8

So funny, all our different favorites and not-favorites.  That is one of my favorite scenes, Ennis with Jack's mother, and particularly her getting the bag to put the shirts in.  (Though I did notice a bag was just sitting here handy, and just one -- not like that's where she kept her paper bags, out on the counter.  Boy, if they'd asked all of us to be the continuity observers and such!  Nothing would get past us.

Oh yeah, thank you.  I didn't watch close enough, either. :)  I would think, though, if they had me as a set designer, I would have shown that a woman like her, with such a bare house and everything put away, that the bags would have been in the cupboard below the counter.  :i

Hi patriot - yeah, I see now there are a couple of bags there - too bad I had to watch again!  Still I'm kinda with Kathy here, I think since the house was so spare she would have tidied things like that away?   I love the scene as a whole. The way there seems to be some sympathy for Ennis from Jack's mother. I didn't pick that up from the SS.  It gives you hope that a friendship might develop, which would be some comfort to them both.  I like to think that (especially once John is gone) they might meet to talk about Jack - although I suspect the actual nature of Ennis' and Jack's relationship will not be mentioned, they'll just be "good buddies" even though the truth is known.

Spot on on both counts Patriot1. Jack is definitely thinking of Ennis in the scene you pictured (just as Ennis is thinking of Jack when he's having the "not so lonely now" conversation which is either just before or just after this scene) but I think he's thinking "I miss him, but there's nothing I can do about it". In the scene after Bobby's birth, I agree that he starts to think about getting in touch with Ennis again. I guess by then he's thinking he has nothing to lose - if Ennis rejects him then he can just go back to his unhappy family life but if Ennis feels the same then he'll have at least some escape from the misery of what he's stuck with in Texas.

For me there are two scenes I dislike and can not even watch.

The first is Jack in Mexico. The first time I saw the movie I watched it all the way through but have never seen it again.  I absolutely hate this scene and wish it was never put into the movie.

The second is Jack's death. From viewing one as soon as the man raised the tireiron I knew what was going to happen and almost lost my lunch. I have never seen this scene again, although I don't wish it had not been put into the movie. I think it was necessary.

I hate the tire-iron sequence but it is of course necessary so that we can see what Ennis thinks happened to Jack.

The other is more problematic - it shows Jack driven by desperation, i suppose, and as doing something he might not have done otherwise. It's immedictaely after that toal dashing of his hopes by Ennis, and has left him for the moment with nowhere he wants to go or be. It's honest and like all honest things not neccessarily comfortable, but I think it rings true - I can imagine doing something just as reckless and out of character if I were as bitter and miserable as Jack must be at this moment.

I always get goose pumps when i watch Jack getting murdered. Its too much, IMO. Yes its appopriate and i don't hate the scene itself, but when they show his face in pain, that gets me. Just like the "Well, he said it was his favorite place" >Thats powerful, IMO, i'm almost crying now just thinking about it. :\'(

I actually love both Family thanksgiving scenes. I liked Ennis and Alms confrontation, but i couldn't help but feel so sorry for Ennis when he's like rocking himself back and forth. Alma goes overboard, but she felt powerful with a new life and all. I love that scene ;D

I dislike that scene to, but i don't hate it, because it plays THE WINGS in it, and that song makes me sad.

May I change my mind?   The look on Jack's face as Ennis drives away (for the last time).  Is it anger, frustration or the grim realisation that he is going to split with Ennis and try make a go of it with Randall.  It's so hard to tell because in the film you don't see how they part - what are going to be their last words...

It strikes me as total desolation, as he realises that he's lost everything - his hopes, however unrealistic, for a future with Ennis, his marriage, which he's said is empty, and any hope of any sense that showing Ennis his depest emotions will have some sort of impact on him sufficient to make him change in any way.

I'm not a big fan of the irrigation ditch scene. Don't get me wrong, it's good in the movie... but when I watch the movie now, after seeing it over and over, I just fast forward past it.

I also tend to skip over the divorce court scene and the scene where poor Ennis is being kicked away at on the wet, cold street. Both of those are just too sad for me. They are great in the whole movie, but sometimes I just feel like watching the good times between Jack and Ennis.

I didn't like this scene either.

I must admit though, I love this picture (mainly just for the impact the fireworks have) . . .
