maybe but we will never know...

yes we will never know. but isnt that one of the wonderful things of BBM so much is left un open and lets your own personal beleifs fill in the gaps. thats one of the reasons everyone has different opinions on the different bits for different reasons it almost lets you choose what you want to beleive.

*o) ooops we are straying from the question in our last few posts and im trying really hard to get all the rules right.

on seen that i dont like is whole jack coming onto the rodeo clown scene. i hate it infact. but i dont really beleive he was coming onto the clown just being genuinly friendly in my opinion. i wasn't keen on the scene with the male prostitute but at least i felt that jack was not being as much unfaithful to ennis then as just trying to be reminded of ennis.

yer i dont so much dislike the scene as some off the opinions on it when people say he was looking for a relationship beyond frienship with the rodeo clown i cant accept this call me naive but i just couldnt think this. thinking like that would sullie jacks memory for me to me he had a pure soul and couldn't be unfaithful like that, i can accept the prostitute scene because there was no intention of a lasting relationship there he was just in my opinion trying to remember ennis

Or in the rodeo clown scene Jack was trying to forget Ennis, because he believed he wasn't going to see him again then, and life goes on...In the case of the prostitute,it was not a question of being unfaithful or not,but a question of a mere sexual relief. He felt awful for Ennis rejection-and stupid behaviour,IMO- and just need to taking him apart from his mind and from his body, even for a while. But a mere sexual relationship is not being unfaithful,if he knew very well whom he really loved indeed.Love and feelings are stronger than a few fucks,in a high mountain or not... ;D
Ennis’s eyes gone bright with shock, mouth opening then closing again. “Love?” Ennis said finally, voice strangling in his throat.

Jack smiled sad. “Yeah, Ennis. Love.” Leaned forward and kissed Ennis’s temple, whispered, “What’d you think it was, all this time?”

I said in another occasion that one of the scenes I disliked the most it's when they say goodbye after leaving BBM; I've chosen it because it's for me the root of all the tragic posterior happenings in their lives. It's when they really had could take profit of the last time together and they hadn't;when they had could speak more deeply about themselves, their dreams and their fears, and they hadn't either. It's an scene that I find lamentable, because it reflects the lack of a real communication that would be their great problem during all their life.Everything is a lot of shy glances:Ennis looks at Jack from head to toes as if he wanted to have a picture of him in his mind to remember...Jack looks at Ennis with a plea in his eyes,as saying:"Please, don't go,don't leave me...",but he doesn't say anything with words. The coldness in their farewell is almost unbearable and Ennis remark of his marrying Alma soon is an stupid way of hurting Jack-I don't know if conscious or not...-.Nobody runs behind the truck or stops it to say what they really wish; and not doing this in that very moment,it's,for me at least, what makes a real problem in their lives forever.JMO.

The divorce scene and Jack's death.  My heart went out to Jack in the divorce scene. I found myself angry with Ennis though I absolutly adored him in the film. Just coud'nt justify this treatment  of Jack when Ennis had another choice, but that's my rationale. The film is what it was.

Jack dying without ever achieving what he sought was devastating to me. I just was'nt ready. Kept hoping the postcard was a mistake. He gave such life to the film so  I never saw it coming, nither did Ennis. Then Lureen's confirmation to Ennis on the phone.... To this day I am unable to watch it. Heartbreaking and senseless.

I respectfully disagree. He was totally coming onto the rodeo clown. The way it he looked at him was really obvious, and the clown knew it, his whole attitude changed, and he got the heck away from Jack. Then he went and told his friends.

I'm convinced Jack was comin onto the rodeo clown too. This clown (no pun intended) suspected by Jack's smiles and prolonged stares. I don't think many of the men in that culture or in that bar, maintained  much eye to eye contact like this. In any case the clown took his suspicions to his friends. Jack saw this and vacated the premises to avoid further huniliation and  trouble. My take.

I too am convinced.    What made the scene unpleasant is to see him exposed this way and left open to rejection and possible bodily harm...

For me the scene where Ennis goes to Jack’s parents… that face, that cold man of a father in front of suffering Ennis, showing nothing but hatred, and the frighten mother, who was looking at him seeking permission all the time.
The moment Ennis came back downstairs with the two shirts in his hands.
(I held the armrest of my chair until I had white knuckles, I feared the old man will not consent Ennis to take those with him).
If you look the way Ennis is holding the shirts on the other side of his body, as to shield them away from the old man’s eyes, Ennis was holding dear Jack in his hands… at that point I could see Ennis’s hands on the old man’s throat fighting to take that piece of Jack with him, if he did tried anything.
The looks on both their faces, old man’s said “what you have there boy?” and Ennis’s “just try to stop me old man”.
Old man then said, to dig deeper into Ennis’s broken heart, “tell you what, we’ve got a family plot, he is going in it”… only Ennis won this time, because he was leaving with Jack’s declaration of eternal love for him and that was more important than Jack’s remains. Ennis had something real to touch and to hold until the end of days.

In my heart I believe “Jack, I swear” means that when Ennis would die, he and those shirts would be cremated and the ashes scattered on BBM as Jack’s final wish, finally together.

their is a topic about what the jack i swear is meaning that is a good point you should post it there :), and i loved your finally together part so true i just know as soon as ennis dies he will be back with jack ( i know they are not real people but to me they are i think the way they were made flesh and blood must have made them like a person thats why jacks death and all the other saddness in the film was so real they wernt just characters they were real people in my eyes)

The rodeo clown scene unpleasant as it was, showed the world that Jack was up against, but how he himself dealt with it.   He didn't stay in his room a bottle of whiskey and say the heck with it, like being on bucking horse he fell off, and got back on. Jack had no fear of the world, but knew how to maneuver in it.

Sometimes I think Jack would have been a guide in world Ennis was unfamilar and afraid of .

I'd rather this thread be called "What scenes hurt you the most to watch", rather than dislike....I dont dislike ANYTHING about this film, but there are scenes within it that hurt me.

Like the post-divorce scene....even reading it in the screenplay, seen in stark black and white, makes me cry.  That's an incredible talent to have, to be able to convey what is written to the screen, through so few words and actions....Heath and Jake were able to do that with this scene.  Every time I watch it, I want to scream and shout at Ennis "dont send him away!", but he does.   :\'( :\'(  It's heartbreaking to see how Jack goes from being this happy guy, excited about hs future, to being a rejected, empty soul, betrayed by Ennis's words and lack of them, and sent away with his heart broken.  The scene with Jack in the car, crying, with the song "A love that will never grow old" playing upsets me so much.

I'm so angry at Ennis in that scene too - and I'm an Ennis girl.  I know why Ennis sent him away, but I cant forgive him for it.

I totally agree. Its how I saw this scene too.  Jack was definitely coming on to the rodeo clown.  I didnt like that scene either, I felt for Jack so much, it was hard to see him try and pick the guy up, and then to be rejected and humiliated at the same time.

Yes,it's unpleasant to see the humiliation and, above all,the more than possible risks than Jack run by making a pass at the clown. But the reality is that one of Jack's faults was to be a little too bold, too risky, bearing in mind the kind of social environment that surrounded him then. So,if you go for something "dangerous" is easy to crash yourself against the wall, and Jack could have thought this...IMO,and although this can be a little *o) -it'd be better to post it in another thread about Jack ...-,between Ennis excessive fears and paranoia that often paralysed him and Jack sometimes excessive not realisation of this environment and what it could bring to him that often could put him in danger, there could be a middle point-I don't know how you say this,sorry...-.

I completely agree with you again,Chris¡ O0  I'm a Jack girl in my case,so it was easy for me to feel sorry for his(new) dissapointment...I also wanted to shout at Ennis not to let him go away, that he asked him to stay even if they must be with the girls-Man¡ you'll know how to be discreet in your Love's "effusions"¡ I remember to say the first time I saw this scene... ;D -.I could feel what Jack felt in this moment and ,so,I thought, and still think, that they lost a great opportunity to live fully their love just in this scene(the first lost opportunity,IMO,was at the farewell down on the mountain; an scene that I find difficult to see...).
Splendid one,by the way, with Heath's restraint-stupid restraint,I'd say...-and Jake making his best to reflect his deep disappointment and grief by seeing his hopes in getting this "sweet life" rejected one more time¡  Really, great interpretations¡.

It was a lost opportunity - and Ennis had many of those. It was always Ennis disappointing Jack, time and time again.  How Jack was able to keep coming back to him, he must have loved Ennis more than he loved himself to do that.

The scene by the river, when Jack is trying to pursuade Ennis to live the sweet life Jack wanted so badly, is another one that hurts me.  You can see Jack hesitate before he starts to talk - thinking whether he should take the chance and say what he is thinking to Ennis -and then he does, and Ennis knocks him back, again.  And what does Jack do in the face of another disappointment?  He strokes Ennis's face, so sweetly and tenderly.....he cant help it, he loves him.

Yes,this is the first dissapointment Jack had in his wild dreams of a sharing life with the man he loved...or perhaps the second?I mean, after the farewell down the mountain,as I said before.I've always thought that Jack felt easier and almost happier than Ennis, and even wanted to play with the lasso, because he really thought there will be a chance to keep on seeing each other in REAL LIFE after their time in BBM.Ennis knew very well that he couldn't allow himself this, because he was going to marry and because...OMG,NO,DATING WITH A MAN¡ :i  and for this reason he seemed more devastated than Jack-who should be because he was always more open to show feelings...-don't you think so?.
And yes,he really loved Ennis,at the point of understanding his reasons for not living together-even if he felt so hurt...poor Jack¡-and caress him.Because he knew that Ennis also loved him,as a matter of fact He's who said"There ain't no reins on this one"...And Jack's happiness by hearing this was greater than the sadness of being rejected,IMO.

Oh absolutely...I meant to add that to my comment, I know that Ennis loved Jack too, from the way he said "There aint no reins on this one" its clear that Ennis was struggling with his feelings for Jack and what he felt was his "real" life with Alma.

It was all part of their love for each other, and how frustrating it all was.

The 4th of July scene.

I know what you mean.  Not that I dislike Ennis becoming violent.  I assume you dislike it because of the bikers and their crass behavior...
