Mumbled Words!
« on: Feb 02, 2006, 10:25 AM »
I have seen the movie twice at the movie theatre and I have a copy of it on my computer as well, so I have something to share..

The scene where Ennis walks to the tent, the night after their relationship grew into so much more, Ennis walks to the tent where Jack is there laying shirtless, and they kiss.

Did anyone hear the words that they mumble. The first two times I saw the movie I really thought nothing was said but last night when I saw it and when I listened on the copy I have on my computer they do say something to eachother

They kiss, then:

Ennnis:  I'm sorry -- I'm sorry.

Jack: It's alright..

then they lay down together..

Did anyone know that was said? Or not catch it the first time they saw the movie, because I certainly did not.. its like almost a faint whisper... but since I now heard it the scene means so much more to me!!
You and me together
Through the days and nights
I don't worry 'cause
Everything's gonna be all right
People keep talking
They can say what they like
But all I know is everything's gonna be all right..

I also heard that Ennis said "I am sorry" But others have said - nothing was said other than Jack saying "It's all right"

Here is the topic for some discussion.

i believe, in that scene, ennis said 'i'm sorry' TWICE, followed by jack's 'it's alright.'

Jack was always to forgive any slight from Ennis just to be together. God, why couldn't Ennis let himself go to Jack, free and unfettered? I can't fix, I gotta stand it....and I don't want to.

I saw the movie four times and honestly don't remember these lines at this time. I also don't recall them being in the story or script. Could you be confusing them with the last campfire scene before they leave each other for the last time?

Ennis is so tight lipped and low spoken it is difficult sometimes to make out what he is saying.  Could someone help me with the conversation (altercation) between Ennis and Alma in the kitchen where she states her suspicions about Ennis and Jack (Munroe is still at the table carving).  At the end of this scene Ennis rushes out.  I don't have access to a copy of the screenplay. TIA

Jimbo

Hope you don't mind me merging those two...there are many threads around, and I'd rather people did not get lost browsing

I'll have to disagree on the above interpretations, but then again, we might all be wrong.

Why would Ennis say "I'm sorry"? Why would he say anything?  He grunts, once or twice, but this is new territory for him - he's rigid, slow to move, his mouth clamped tight.

I think Jack is saying [it]saright, sallright, it's all right.  Admittedly it sounds like sorry, but I don't think it is.

The script (screenplay, which *may* differ from final dialogue) offers no words from Ennis, only Jack saying "It's all right....it's all right."

There are clearly three utterances in the film, so debate is open. Just my opinion.

You know what?

I had this discussion with some friends, French speaking but fairly good bilinguals, like me.

Ennis, for the most, and Jack strong accents could have get another Oscar nomination:

Best foreign language movie!  ;D

I'm glad I saw it first in a French dubbed version (tough I hate dubbed version) and second, in the English original with French sub-titles (the translation was horrible but it helped a lot)

The first time I saw it at the theater I only heard "s'alright" three times from Jack. Then to make sure, the 2nd time I watched their lips. Ennis' do not move. He doesn't speak nor need to speak. The fact he came to the tent at all speaks volumes. I'm so glad he didn't run away... that could have been a horrible summer.

"On the last afternoon on the mountain, Jack, in their contortionistic grappling and wrestling, slammed Ennis's nose hard with his knee. He had staunched the blood which was everywhere, all over both of them, with his shirtsleeve, but the staunching hadn't held because Ennis had suddenly swung from the deck and laid the ministering angel out in the wild columbine, wings folded."

i second that!!

at first i thought he said "i'm sorry" .. but after 6 viewings and paying great attention.. i'm sure he doesn't say that! he breathes heavily and Jack says "it's alright" two times!

I think we'll have to not count dubbing - from my long experience, it's a free-form art, not a science, and very frequently mis-represents the actual dialogue.  The script has two "it's all right's" from Jack, he may have veered off script to say it three times, Ledger doesn't open his mouth.

I specifically listened for that at tonight's showing. Ennis indeed says "I'm sorry" twice, then Jack rasps out, "It's alright" then pulls Ennis to him. The love between the two is amazing. If you ever had to say your sorry to your boyfriend, partner, or lover, you know exactly what has just transpired between the two. I love my boys.

History's great questions?

Is the world flat or round?

Is it Evolution or Creationism?

Did Ennis say I am sorry or not in the second tent scene???????????

Geez.............
We can't change it. We will have to stand it.

You're the man!

We have been debating this for so long!  Yes last time I saw it, I payed a very special attention, despite water flooding from my eyes, despite the music that got me at the very beggining (reason for flooding), despite the words that were whispered, more and more flooding.

O.k. it's my turn to cry now, Baw!  :'( :'( :'(

But listened specifically at the scene for the same reason...and I didn't hear any "I'm sorry"  No how. No way.
It would have been a more tender scene if it was really clear that he said that.  Seems like the consensus is split on this issue.  We will have to wait for the DVD... or I will have to go see the movie again! teehee

I've replayed that tent scene over and over with the volume cranked to max, and I still can't hear any dialogue. I wish they'd release the DVD, so I could play it with subtitles on.
