I just saw the movie again yesterday, and I could not help notice another haunting detail. I was wondering if anyone out there has also noticed that when Ennis enter's Jack's closet during the visit to Jack's room, you actually see three 'ghostly' finger stains on the door frame as Ennis enters the closet.

It is perhaps a trivial detail that was not planned, but the appearance of the finger markings on the closet door frame brought Jack's presence strongly to the fore in this scene (at least for me.)

Very haunting detail, IMO.

Looking out Jack's window, what is the symbol painted on the barn in Ennis's view?
We can't change it. We will have to stand it.

There was an old car in the bard.  The sing was the spare tire.  At least that is what I saw... I think I saw.

I haven't seen much mentioned about Lureen's splotch of nail polish (only some notes in the "Lureen's teeth" thread). Having read all the comments in the thread "Oprah question: Did Lureen know", I missed the nail polish symbol. It's not only that everybody of the film team had this "Lureen did know for sure" attitude. Ang Lee gave us a subtle, but obvious visual hint of his point of view. Everything in Lureen's home was so perfectly arranged, but: There was this tiny little splotch of nail polish on her finger, in the color red. Certainly not the color of love in this scene, but the color of blood. She did know for sure, that Jack has been killed and had participated, although we'lll never know how. She was part of the system.

Interesting thought.  I did notice the blotch of red nail polish on her finger, but didn't know if there was any significance to it.  Could it mean "blood stain on her hand"?  I don't know either.

It has overtones of Lady Macbeth, who after inciting her husband to murder the king and seeing his blood-covered hands, said !A little water clears us of this dee," but at the end of the play when she sleepwalks is seen still trying to wash a spot of blood from her hand.

My feeling is that Lureen has some idea that Jack's death was murder, though she is a Southern lady in a place where men acted and women were often protected from the knowledge of what they had done. And as has been said, she is part of the system.

Anyone noticed that the clock on the desk in Jack's childhood room. The time stopped at 8:45. It remind me the song" a quarter to nine" it may just a coincidence. I love that song.

The clock: 8:45 - add up the numbers = 17.  Also, Brokeback Mountain = 17 letters   ???

Wonderfull! I love your Macbeth analogy. My feeling is that Lureen made for herself an active decision not to know. That means: She knew it, of course, even the details, but she decided for herself not to know. That's a common way to manipulate yourself. It makes life so much easier.

  • " You and him did'nt go up there to fish"...
I got the feeling that Lureen knew alot more than she let on. This " explaination" from her to Ennis  of Jack's death seemed so rehearsed to me that she could have had it written down in front of her. Jack traveled alot, and I'm sure he could change a tire without killing himself.  She seemed arrogant and fake. The only redeeming value she had was telling Ennis to go to LF where he found the shirts. I'm sure she knew alot more and had "blood" on her hands because of it. And what's up with the "cotton candy" hair?  I never cared for her that much anyway. My take.

I did, and it shows also in the last meeting, when Ennis falls into Jack's arms.
The most difficult scene was the paragraph where, on the mountain, Ennis holds Jack and rocks back and forth, humming, the moment mixed with childhood loss and his refusal to admit he was holding a man.

- Annie Proulx -

From the vibration of the floorboard on which they both stood, Ennis could feel how hard Jack was shaking.

His tatoo looks like a bracelet or a piece of twine tied around his wrist.  If you don't pay close attention, you may think it's just a crease on his wrist.  It's weird that some of the scenes, you don't see it.  I wonder if the digitally remove some, or just block it with make-up.

Good eyes, Twisted.  I didn't notice that one.  I'll watch it again.  Maybe that scene was too moving that I pay more attantion to the boys interactions than anything else.

There is a special kind of makeup especially to cover tatoos.

I guess after three or four takes in a scene as .... friction-intense as the reunion scene, some of the makeup would come off.

Interesting.  I don't know if a character such as Ennis would have sported tattoos.  We have already noted in a previous post the heavily tattood lady who was at the dance floor with Cassi and Ennis during the double date with Alma Jr.  It is not that tattoos are unknown or rare in Ennis's world; rather, I am not sure if it was in keeping with his subdued, unassuming character.
